Never seen anybody master the use of a 24mm lens for headshots the way Joel Grimes does. Really incredible stuff.
yep, fantastic work...
Totally agree. I love that he doesn't let convention get in the way of his vision
Really really incredible
Joel, love you and Amy and can't thank you enough for allowing me to work with you on so many occasions. Thanks to Wescott, the guys were great!
vincent alfonzo jamal.....great work....
Thank You! Joel makes it easy...
vincent alfonzo jamal awesome job Vincent. You killed it!
Well done mate...great job Vincent!
Brilliant stuff Bro🌹
Love how J. Grimes takes the time to explain everything while encouraging you to experiment. Such simple setup.
Joel's work is incredible, and, he's not what a "technical" photographer would be in that he experiments. Lots of photographers are stuck on the science, and do not push the boundaries of creativity.
'Beautiful! Beautiful!' ... Indeed.
Joel is the best portraits photographer out there
And just ... BAM! There it is! Nailed it.
Very nicely done excellent presentation it was great to see a professional who knows what the hell he’s doing
Thank you kindly!
Happiness..
Thanks for the good advice
Shout out to the model who took that direction and ran with it. After Grimes directs him to look off then look back, he does it every time.
Thank you for your videos Joel, truly appreciated 🙏
Glad you like them!
I love watching you step through your thought process as you dial in the portrait. Great shots. Thanks
Love the technique tweaking the 24-70mm lens 👏🏾👏🏾
Omg, I went tehehee, when Vincent smiled. Didn't expect such a big beautiful smile.
Joel, I always learn something every time I view your tutorials. Just goes to show you can teach an old dog new tricks. Share the Light, Bob & Dawn
Joel Grimes is a national treasure.
Excellent model. Character face, eyes and rest...
Thanks for this. We need more tutorials on photographing darker skin tones.👍
The simplicity always catches me off guard. Great video. You're helping a ton of us shoot better images. Thanks again!
Great work. Joel Grimes is so generous!
I Love Joel Grimes. I picked up a camera because of him.
Thank you very much. Appreciate you.
Brilliant! I never would have thought to use a 24mm!
Straight to the point. You're awesome!
I stayed for the patience of the model.
So refreshing to see a video showing a photographer at work producing great images, sad to think many people just view gear vlogger pro's droning on about cameras.
It's kind of sad to see how photographers who just use a camera and simple adjustments get view as "the best photographers" just because they are mainly vloggers. Not saying their photos are bad, but they really don't tell much or require skill. The skill these vlogger photographers posses is entertaining people. The only thing that sucks is seeing instgram full of same meaningless photos, shot at less than 2.0 aperture, orange/yellow skins, and grainy looks
Thank you so much.
You are a genius.
I'm one of those that likes to use an 85mm for portraits but because of you I did some test shots using my 24-105 f4 lens at 24mm. I like what I saw! So now I have another option. Thanks, Joel!
Thanks Joel! Very helpful!
Awesome shots joel
Thank you so much, this video explains and shows exactly what's needed for a dramatic photo 👏🏼

awesome portraits.....vincent fits the dramatic role on the money. i feel like the combo of his confident look and the suit together should be selling for a higher end manufacturer suit company. great work....
wow ... that is a awesome tutorial for just 1-3 light with 24-28mm!
Love this video!
the best 12 min ever!
Joel, you are my inspiration! You were the guy who encouraged me to use a lens shorter than 50mm for portrait work. Outstanding tutorial! When will you come to Hungary with a workshop? When you do, I'm sold instantly.
this was helpful! great job! I am learning😁
Using the 24mm for portraits is very challenging !

I love lighting, awesome video
Very interesting look you got there. I think I'll have to try out some wide angle portraits in studio sometime.
Great video.
Excellent.
Got to duplicate this into a self portrait....... Awesome video tutorial!!!! Thanks
Very instructional to me. Thank you very much. I understand that you like to crop out the top of the head, but my clients don't like that look. Can you show us what his hair looked like up top in the last images of the video?
Anyone else think the thumbnail was the Gigachad meme for a sec?
love
Nice, crazy shots 😀👍🏼
Thanks for watching!!
Nice to see Einsteins getting some respect! Love these units
Excellent tutorial. Can we know what boom arm and stand you used I like the look of it. Looks pro but won't break the bank (I hope) also what kind of strobe are you using. Thanks
Great video
awesome!
Wow. U r really good..
Great video!
wish I could have seen a better view as to see how the side lights were positioned as he was being photographed. I dosee at the end the set up. Just not sure if they were more behind him or directly cross lit.
Really awesome pictures Joel👍🏻. Great Lighting. Can you tell me what song starts at 10:57 ?
May I ask what kind of backdrop that is? Also, how do you address the lens distortion that occurs near the edges shooting that wide?
Love you videos, great job! Can you do the same thing with a light skin model, would love to see the comparison.
Good work... can you please tell me what's the measure of the edge soft boxes .
Is there a chance to get some informations about post production, especially of the first shot. It´s great!
I want to do the same thing with Canon Speedlites
Nice video. Please tell me what Matthews support and arm are you using to support beauty dish.
Sir great information Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Could someone share what the heavy duty rolling stand, as well as attached boom, are? What I've been looking for, thanks.
Why the 24" beauty dish? What would be the effect of a larger or smaller sized dish?
Love the tutorial... but... why on earth did you not use a gimbal to stabilize the camera lol
very nice!
how exactly did you use the softbox? (the defusion fabric and the metal plate?)
What is the light stand and boom arm youre using?
What are the edge lights ?
Anyone have a link tp the texture background thing Joel was talking about?
Could you tell me what brand Vincent's watch is, please? :)
BEFORE THE WARDROBE CHANGE, WHY DIDN'T BOTH HANDS SHOW?
Any photoshop/ editing tutorial or run through? Thnks for the lighting and posing info
Ben, Joel offers complete tutorials on his editing at www.joelgrimesworkshops.com/
Hmmm... so if your subjects are average people that are a little overweight and don't want to look chubby, wouldn't you have to start using a longer focal length?
