Sometimes less is more and that's exactly what photographer Gavin Hoey explores when he creates a small slot of light for a portrait shoot.
Gavin takes the DIY budget approach to creating a slot of light, recycling a cardboard tube to control the light. In the video he'll show you how to create a slot of light and then three different ways it can be used and extended into a thin beam to create some eye catching portraits.

Awesome! I was doing pet portraits and was getting a nice natural effect via sun and window and have been trying to figure out how to create this effect for times when it just can’t be done naturally. Perfect!

Pretty cool DIY hack. I've been saving some empty Pringles chips tubes to do something pretty similar. A video series of similar DIY options would be interesting to see as well.
Thanks Gavin.

Again - I learned so much :) I'm totally new to colour filters and more new than I shud be about "Invention" you've just exploded my notions with regard use of my snoot :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Gavin, you are a great presenter and I have learnt a lot watching your videos. Kindly let me know how I can get razor sharp portraits in places such as a restaurant or a wedding hall with a simple speed light and without any other gear.
Always a pleasure Gavin... Bravo!

I LOVE THIS> SOOOO HELPFUL> Thank you so very much for this tutorial. I am trying it this Friday on a model
Gavin, you are a master promotor! What ever Adorama is paying you, it is not enough, LOL.
You touched on and used just about all the accessories for the great eVOLV 200 strobe - plus added in a couple of your own DIY tips. Great job.
Best wishes to you and Sam for 2018!
This is so cool! I bought this beginner's lighting kit...and the lights with their umbrella reflector things are wide... Should be an interesting challenge to make slivers of light with some tape!
Excellent information provided in an easy to understand format. I always enjoy your instructional videos; this is certainly one of your best. Great resource for all low-key shooters. Thanks!
I did the original snoot to illuminate a bottle label. I also used 2 layers of tracing paper, one one overlapping the tape by about 5mm and one about 3mm to feather the light slightly. It worked better with the 5mm closest to the light as I got a slightly weird line the other way round. I also tried cutting out a circle of cardboard with a square hole in it that didn’t work right at all, there’ll be some scientific reason I don’t understand for this. Great video as always, thank you and now I know why my barn doors didn’t work.
Great teacher always inspirational, Thanks again Gavin
gavin is a great teacher
Excellent… you always make it look so easy
Excellent Gavin. Really creative.

Great work mate.
Thank you for this video! I was trying to get the thin beam of light look recently and it didn’t work out with whatever modifier I used so im really glad about your helpful tip
Wauw, a whole new world opened to me ;-) thanks
I'd call this exploring creativity! Loved it! 🤗
What if you combined the barn doors with the included grid? Think that would get you a cleaner beam of light?
Merry christmas Gavin. Thanks for the very inspirational and educative video !
Ive uses so many of your ideas....love ya!
Like this video. It gave me some good tips. Awesome pictures by the way.
This was a good one Gavin keep em coming.
I like all the Gavin Hoey videos, they have been very helpful. One question I have is when he is shooting are the Studio lights really turned on while using the flash? I always thought to turn off the studio lights and let the flash do all the work.
I love this.
Thank you good stuff.👌🏾
Very informative, Sir. Thanks
An excellent informative video once again Gavin please keep
up the good work.
FANTASTIC !
Absolutely incredible! Thanks for sharing!
How does the output not affected by the lights in room? All the shots are amazing!
Love Gavin's tutorials, very helpful and fun but wondering where to get the concrete type backdrop?
breath taking portraits Gavin Thank you... you're genius ;)
I love this. I am going try this using PVC tubing which I can slide inside of another larger PVC tubing (schedule 40) in the near future. In this way, it will be more adjustable on the fly.
