Linda Ronstadt - The Waiting

- This is a great cover of one of Tom Petty's best songs - more rockier than usual vocals from Linda. This is to be found on her 1995 album ' Feels Like Home ' Elektra Records.
LYRICS
"The Waiting"
Oh baby don't it feel like heaven right now
Don't it feel like something from a dream
Hey I've never known nothing quite like this
Don't it feel like the night might never be again
Baby we know better than to try and pretend
Honey, no one could've ever told me about this
I said yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card
You take it on faith
You take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part
Well yeah you might've chased a couple women around
Oh all it ever got you is down
Yeah then there were those that made me feel good
But never as good as I feel right now
Baby you're the only one that's ever known how
To make me want to live like I want to live now
I said yeah yeah
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith
You take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part
Oh, don't let it kill you babe
Don't let it get to you
Don't let it kill you babe
Don't let it get to you
I'll be your bleeding heart
I'll be your crying fool
Don't let this go too far
Don't let it get to you
[Guitar break]
I said yeah yeah
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith
You take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part
The waiting is the hardest part
[Mandolin break]
It's the hardest part
It's the hardest part

Linda always sang THE SONG, not a single unnecessary note , no vocal histrionics , power without screeching and a respect for the lyric. Simply the best.
Just a beautiful natural voice who sung it the best it could be. Just an amazing beautiful talent showing off how she mastered the art with an original voice to show everyone how it's done. Almost like the exact female version of Tom Petty believe it or not
She just showed everybody how it's done didn't she?
With all my respect to Tom Petty, this one is magic
I heard this for the first time on Tom Petty Radio over the weekend. Had no idea she ever covered this. Thanks David Fricke for making me aware of this version. Tremendous.
At Linda's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , 4 great female vocalist sang her songs and all 4 could NOT equal Linda's Power , Heart and Soul ....
I heard this 3 days ago with friends driving from PA to NY. I thought it was the Chicks. They told me it was Ronstadt. That Blew my mind. Love them both (Ronstadt . Petty) so much. Great music. love
artists! 0
Glad to hear this magnificent version for the 1st time. Golden pipes. The harmonies heavenly.
Ohhhh..! That voice!
I mean jesus shes is perfect so so so gorgeous
She takes my breath away
Still in love with this beautiful soul ❤
Poignant power and heartbreak were Ronstadt's natural vocal gifts. Glad she brought those rare gifts to this Tom Petty tune.
So many great things about this cover. LR’s powerful vocals, a well crafted arrangement, the harmonies….
Love this Linda does this cover best...❤️
She still sounds like she's 18 on this. Just amazing. Probably the greatest pure singer ever.
I overlooked this song originally, but now see it's one of her best ever country-rock vocals : starts at the top and only goes higher...
No one else like Linda - pipes of glory. A songwriter's champion - a musician's best friend. A rare case of sanity and solid soul in a dirty rotten business.
I have a huge huge crush on this women
The greatest chick singer evah? Yeah, I think so. Tender and powerful. Hearing her live was a thrill.
Lauderdale Jones
Couldn't be said any better. She was the Best, I was fortunate to wee her in LA late 70's at the Universal Amphitheater.
Absolutely! From her album, "Mad Love".
@@ChrisBonomi I have never been to one of her concerts, even though she has been my favorite singer for pert near 40 years...
And what a babe
The great Linda Ronstadt. Talent, Beauty, Style and Class. She never received the recognition and praise that she should have for all that she accomplished.
The best cover ever. Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers recorded this in history, but Linda nailed it down!
This woman could sing!
I think I will always be in love with her.
She's the G.OA.T.
I love Tom Petty. I love Linda. The BEST cover ever!
Just an unbelievably great cover. Took the song and made it her own with that performance. All the while showed that she could honor Tom Petty by singing it as good or better than he did and that is what is amazing. Water voice she was awesome
Never heard this cover--fabulous.
_It's even better live._
Something about her. Always was my favorite. Still is.
I saw her in Pittsburgh in the 70's I remember it like it was yesterday. Incredible is the only word that comes to mind.
This is what the lady is about. Stunning! Lovely to hear Tom Petty on harmony. If any song summed Linda Ronstadt up this is it. Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! I had no idea she did this. Love it.
It seems like Linda always stays true to the style and arrangement of the original hit and usually just does it better. Not sure this is any better than Petty, but it's pretty darn good.
This song is goosebumps..
The best singer. Period. Great Tom Petty tune :)) .
excellent! 😎
Wow!!!
We owe this glorious performance to the 30 years in between it and these pictures.
Girl Loved to sing and this shows it. Tom would be proud.
Hello! If you don't like this version you need to listen Tom's version and then come back to this one. Passion! Saw LR at a hotel in Boulder with about 50 other people in '72. The back up band wasn't the Eagles but Rick Roberts was singing back up to her. Fantastic, think about that evening every time I hear her. If you don't know who Rick Roberts is then get a life :)
Pat Kennedy he’s had an impressive career for someone without a well known name!
50 people, 500, or 5,000‐ same power and passion. She said she didn't like performing in arenas so I bet she enjoyed the intimate venue as much as you! Savor that memory!
Wonderful. Came here from Sirius Bakersfield channel
Ronstadt brings some super fine vocals and all her heart to this terrific Tom Petty tune. Linda was going to do "American Girl" with The Heartbreakers but alas it didn't happen. Goodbye from this world Mr. Petty.
Did not know Linda was going to do that. Do you know when this was supposed to have happened ?
Inexplicable How this woman is both, the hottest most unobtainable chick and like your best friend at the Same time. Just absolutely precious
Linda, linda, linda. Pin-up gal with killer pipes. Very very special creature.
What a voice.
What a Doll!
WOW! This tune was made for Linda.
She sang at my high school in 1971 with the Eagles. Luv her
Where?
Wow! someone mentioned this cover to me and OMG. I love it.
What a cutie. I'm 62 and have listen to her from the beginning.
+Brian Lauer Different Drum... a long time ago.
Barefoot cutie she was
Steven Orsolini whatever turns you on
Most beautiful woman Ever
Amazing.
Chills! Never knew! So great!
What passion!!! Linda R always makes me feel like what it is to be a man. That is, I would move heaven & earth to be with her, or die trying.
Felt that way since Different Drum, brother!
@@pfdrtom Yes, to be with Her, it's written on our DNA, it flows in our blood.
I know exactly what you mean.
HOW....HOW did I miss this all these years?!?!? What an amazing cover! This actually made me a little emotional. :D
all the bells and whistles, voice , looks and a perky personality !!!
Jaysus she is a treasure. What a troubadour of songwriters' art. oxoxo
Lovely Linda, the cover Queen of RnR.
Linda could sing ANYTHING❤❤
I never dreamed in my life that I could hear this song be sung so great by anyone else than Tom Petty. Holy cow! I've never realized how awesome Linda is until she takes Tom Petty's song from Tom Petty lol. Just kidding but dang talk about doppelganger
Great vocalist. Best version of a Tom Petty tune evah!
stevie, free fallin
This is awesome. Love me some linda ronstadt, another unbelievable cover of Toms music is Blackberry Smokes cover of "you got lucky". It"ll melt you!
Listen to Eddy Vetter do it
It's not a Tom Petty tune. Jackson Brown wrote the tune. Both Tom's and Linda's versions are great!
You are 100% incorrect. Tom Petty wrote this an had no co-writers. There are many video interviews of him talking about how he wrote it! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Waiting_(song)
Wow. She really attacks those vocals. Somehow I feel that she is an underrated chick rock singer. I think she was such a belter when she wanted to and then adds that low tone and growl. So hot.
Linda just needed the right rock band and the right material and she coulda been a real rocker. She has the feel for it. And the ability.
I’ve always loved Linda. This is a great cover of the Late, Great Tom Petty!
Love her! Nobody makes me feel like the way she sings right through no cute all the way.
Une de mes chansons favorites de Linda. Sa voix est très dynamique, expressive, fascinante. Bravo. (H)🇭🇺
Still breakin' my heart!
That voice. Sometimes your just "Born with it"
This has me grinning, love it.
Just found this. This rocks!
She could make any song her own , R I P Mr. Petty
EXCELLENT.😃😃😃 I CAN Finally Understand ALL The WORLD'S THANK YOU LINDA😎😎😎
Great cover!
I love Linda and the way she sings. But Tom Petty is one of my absolute favorites, and this is one of Tom's best. So respectfully, I will have to put this behind his.
Linda-a cutie .
Just brilliant
bestlegts on planet ladiies...
The BEST cover of this Tom Petty song, period. Of course, it is done by THE best! Love Linda!!
Yes it certainly is the hardest part. great job.
RIP Tom
Still a great cover.
I had a crush on this woman for much of my young life. It was as much for her voice as it was for her beauty.
Her cover is superior to the original and you can't tell me otherwise
Sadly I never got to see her live , Neil many times I'm glad to say. What a great concert that must have been for you. Sure it wasn't that long ago , you must have been about ten !!
The It Girl!
Thank you for all the great pix! I was not aware of this track! But I can hear Tom’s
“R’s” in the chorus doing harmony! Nobody else pronounces R as good as Tom! Bless his heaRt!❤️❤️❤️
cool. tom petty is my favorite- nice to hear a unique cover like this
What a voice, great song! and great pictures , big thumbs up dear Sue,
Gus ☼
The greatest songs are the ones that evoke the same feelings as the original version regardless of who performs them. For me "The Waiting" is Tom Petty's greatest song. It encompasses everything Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers was about. No matter who performs it and when it is performed, it will always remind us of Tom and The Heartbreakers.
Beautiful
YESSSSSSS
She's the best - I'm a big Tom Petty fan and love the song . Linda 's is an excellent cover. Thanks Gus , have a good week. x
That photo montage sure brought back some memories. Thank you! :)
Wow wow I never knew this existed till I listen to it on Tom Petty radio like the other person said I had no idea that this even existed. What a powerful great singer any genre she tackled she nailed and I love Tom Petty's music and hearing her great voice sing it is great thank you for making this known Tom Petty radio

My favorite female vocalist... You must listen to her sing Adios...
Don't let it get to you.......
Glad you like it Mary - I know you are a fan of Linda.
awesome!
She’s an amazing woman.
Great Song! You have always been a good performer in the arts . You perfected this on a scale of 10. I can here tom in the back round vocals as you are singing. I think Tom , would have have been proud that you perfected so well.
I missed this one back then. Beautiful better than Tom!
