    And the clock strikes midnight
    And I'm lying here alone.
    I can't sleep, I hear my heartbeat
Oh, I can't stand the monotone.
And everyday I have paced the floor.
You know it rains a lot inside my heart
But I still ask for more.
But now I know that love can leave a scar.
Come pick me up, I'm going down

Jonathan Wallach I've seen several live appearances of Karen that were pitch perfect. I have heard that without a microphone you could barely hear her because she doesn't sing loud.

The vocalise (oohs) at the end is a tour de force all its own. So much flexibility and control of sustained tone, breath, vibrato and pitch. Maybe you need to be a singer to really appreciate it. I know I couldn't touch it.

i cannot believe she opted to leave this shining gem off the album. the first time i heard it back in '99 when i bought her box set, i fell in love with it instantly. some wonderful photographs you included in this video. thank you! linda's simply the best.

This song is so much better than several songs that made her albums. I read somewhere that she thought she sounded drear, like an old school marm.

Don't you think that charting a single about "goin' down" would have cheapened Linda Ronstadt's image? What are you thinking??? Lucky you're not an A&R man.

Karla Bonoff composed many wonderful songs. Ronstadt covered the best of them. Linda was apparently a perfectionist when recording in the studio. As well as picking the material she would cover. Look at the composers of Linda's recorded material. You'll notice well known artists, stars in their own right. Karla Bonoff, Wendy Waldom, Carole King, James Taylor, J.D. Souther, The Everly Brothers, Jimmy Webb.
