I absolutely love this song. This is definitely my favorite version. Nothing better than Mike playing on a Rickenbacker 12 string and Tom and Stan singing together.
Absolutely. I remember reading an article about the Wilburies, back in the day. As I recall, Tom was a bit star struck, and felt kind of like the junior member. Okay, Harrison, Orbison, Dylan. I kind of get it. At one point, Tom talked about having just laid down vocals on a track, and then someone (George, I think) said “hey, let’s see what it sounds like if Roy sings it.” Tom said he was thinking, “aw, no, man, please don’t do this to me!” I remember reading that and thinking, okay, Orbison, sure. And I love that Tom was a modest, down to earth guy. But I wished I could have told him that he didn’t need to feel like he didn’t belong there, or that his voice wasn’t as good. And I wish he could see the outpouring of love that has been expressed since his untimely passing. I hope that, in his own modest way, he was still able to sense that he was one of the true greats. Because he was.

This truly brings back memories for me. In the interview process for my first 1st job out of college during the final meeting with the hiring manager he seriously asked me the cliche question if you could have a beer with anyone living or dead who would it be. My answer was Tom Petty. He asked if he was my favorite artist.
