What a beautiful rendition of one of the greatest songs from the 1960s. I love the original version from Roger Mcguinn and the Byrds but Petty completely captures the spirit of the song. This is an undiscovered gem.

Petty truly appreciated McGuinn's genius and did himself credit showing he wasn't simply "into himself" but wanted others to honor the music he loved himself.
Sometimes correcting others IS appropriate - thank you for making sure Roger McGuinn's name doesn't die before the man himself. Even Tom Petty has publicly corrected people about Roger McGuinn (in front of Roger, on camera)
My favorite singer and band, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. This is an awesome tribute to a young man who died too soon. Tom Petty does it better that anyone. I love this song, and I'm glad that Tom Petty left us this one to remember him by, along with the rest of his many recordings that will never be equalled.
Tom does a great job on this Dylan/McGuinn song. Tom was such a fan of The Byrds. He covered "So You Want To Be A Rock n' Roll Star" & "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better." To many both covers are better than the originals.On Chris Hillman's latest album he covers Tom's song "Wildflowers." Petty & some of the Heartbreakers also accompany Hillman on the album, which was recorded at Tom Petty' s recording studio. It is hard not having Tom Petty around anymore. But we still have his music.✌
Sorry Joseph but there is no better version of than "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better." than Gene Clark. Petty was note for perfect copy of the B yrds version.

I stated that many people feel that Petty's cover of this Byrd tune is better than the original. I am not one of them. Actually this Gene Clark song is my favorite Byrd tune. I place it in my all time Top 10 list of songs. Again, sorry for misleading you & I thank you for defending this underrated song.🤗✌

Its quieter; the song is a yearning prayer of remembrance for a deceased friend...Petty's version is "jaunty", comparatively. (Benmont's playing is beautiful, though.) The X-factor in the Byrds version...Clarence White's guitar. He played beautifully! What a loss for the music world when he died...tragic.
