I would agree american anyway but not British, but hands down the heartbreakers were one of the tightest bands ever even though this is solo album and not the heartbreakers but still killer
I've been thinking a lot, but now I can definitely say this is his best song, even considering The Heartbreakers albums. Tom Petty is the songwriter par excellence when it comes to make a masterpiece out of a simple song.
@@lorrainevismara5415 It's what shapez73 says. Tom goes straight to the soul of things, to the stuff we are really made of, and the shock of that can get to you so quickly, cut through the defenses, touch you where you're tender, the place you usually have to hide, so you flinch a little, you tear up. It's a natural thing. It's you. It's the heart coming into the light and blinking. Damn I miss him. So now there's that, too.
I echo your sentiments. I exist only to make others happy. Thats a good thing.....but who will make me smile in return. Behind these bright sparkly eyes and wide toothy smile....this girls all alone. ~Sigh TP has been my go to for over 20 years. 🌹❤️
My daughter Molly when she was asked as a kindergarten graduate what she wanted to be when she grew up, ie : nurse, vet, athlete, etc, she grabbed the mic from the teacher, and said I wanna be Tom Petty's wife ! The crowd went wild, her father, my ex husband had a fit, she's in her 30's now, married to a Tom Petty appreciatio like the rest of us 🎩💘🎸
This song was playing on my car radio while making the drive to the hospital where my Mama lay (when I got the call at almost midnight that my Mother passed away)… She may’ve been just a face in the crowd, but since then, and before, I’ve never witnessed a funeral with as many ppl from all walks of life that Mom touched, helped, encouraged, and was their friend?! She is, and will always be my hero, miss her soooo much, and I thank God for blessing me, and my 6 brothers & sisters with such a wonderful Mother…❤️ ❤️Love you Mom💋🕊
Difficult times in high school, I remember being on the bus looking out the window listening to Tom Petty music. His music helped me through tough times.
Exact same for me. And he legit got me into playing music at 15/16, 31 now and still play. I said “he knows how I feel, like crap. He’s not just some superstar… he’s a real-life loser who knows how hard the journey can be.” I say that in an affectionate way.
@@ElronHumpperdink Funny, as when I found TP in the 80's, in my school in Oz, he was seen as a bit of a loser, much like me. I loved him instantly the moment I heard him. It's been that way since. I was lucky enough to see him in London 2017 and it was damn good.
I know nobody will ever see this but, I have two daughters that are 24 and 18 and love his vocals and story telling music. Im sure God above is making him sing to the angels.
There's definitely something wrong with a person who doesn't love Tom Petty and his unique and awesome voice .......I really miss him and wish he would not have had to leave us .....
Thank you Tom Petty for being part of the soundtrack to my life during happy times and sad. You were more than a face in the crowd. RIP and you're missed greatly.
Interesting. For me it represents that point in time where it's neither day or the evening, but somewhere in between- when everything is bathed in gold light and the shadows are long.
I'd be honored if some Petty fans would take a listen to my acoustic performance (keyboard & vocal) of INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN on my YT channel in tribute to one of TP's many profound and enduring compositions. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace.
American people consider Tom Petty a national treasure. This is good. This is fair. I can only add that the legacy of this man extend well beyond the USA borders. He sings about universal values, emotions and life situations. Thank you Tom for your music
Anybody still paying attention to the comments Tom Petty amongst others got me through a tough time in 2008 and it's odd listen to music which got me through a tough time and it was just that, at that time but I didn't realize our government was f****** with us as bad as they are now so now its time to stand up how about you?
Always been a big fan of Tom petty. I was amazed yesterday to hear his song played on the new GTA 6 trailer. Had to go back and play the album it came from. I forgot about this complete hidden gem. Grew up with my dad listening to this. He's no longer with us any more just like Tom. This hauntingly beautiful song actually made me cry.
My big sister and I saw Tom so many times free at the bandshell in G'ville. I lost her to COVID19 in 2021. I was in shock when Tom died and now again. How many do we have to lose?
I was just saying the same thing to a coworker recently. Been listening to Petty since I was a kid. I'm 43 now and Tom's music has been a part of every stage of my life and I appreciate the songs on a deeper level as time goes by. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one. Thanks for sharing.
I’m 21 years old and Tom Petty has always been related, in my mind, to my dad. Alongside the Travelling Willburys and George Harrison, it’s what he always used to play on the car when going on our yearly summer trip. It’s one of those things you remember from a kid that you’ll always remember. I always get very emotional when listening to him, makes me miss those days so much. My dad is still alive, but I already know that Tom’s music will accompany me for the rest of my life.
You should ask your dad about what that song meant back then. Maybe he didn’t know because you were better off than we were but when I started working in Pennsylvania in the 80s unemployment was about 25%. You can see that influence in the song very similar to Billy Joel Allentown song and Bruce Springsteen songs people like them and Tom Petty meant a lot to us and little dying towns like Pottstown Pennsylvania back then. I wish I could’ve told him that 💚
so real no one what's you to break free when you do you become the talk of the town that is what this song is really about you no it when you live it ✌️
all powerful songs by tom petty
Petty Perfection
He was a Genius with the Simply of his Heart
This song gives me goosebumps. Beautifully haunting
Tom ripping out hearts with this one.
Normally I wouldn’t say this but don’t you dare sing along. Sometimes in life you just have to let Tom sing to you.
Oh my..... what a beautiful statement, I never could sing along to this song, my tears were and still are so heavy. 🎩💘🎸
BRAVO.
Never get tired or this song
Thank you so much, Tom. May God bless and keep you forever.
This has got to be my favorite Tom Petty song
It's my favorite too
Mee too. hands Down.
One of TP&H best songs ever. Wait, all of their songs are awesome
So beautiful to read comments from people who love Tom. Thanks
Very good statement!
❤❤
The greatest American songwriter. Nobody else comes close. Rest in peace Tom
FYI sir Mr. Petty's favorite songwriter was Ray Davies of The Kinks.
"Greatest American songwriter" is a debateable but he was pretty damn good and up there with the very best.
Queda Jeff lyne
Been having this debate too. Tom Petty is the best Americana sorry. Orbison, Fogerty, Eagles(Dude does not abide) close second?
I would agree american anyway but not British, but hands down the heartbreakers were one of the tightest bands ever even though this is solo album and not the heartbreakers but still killer
I love crying to this song
Amazing song!
Don´t know how many songs he wrote, but I assume many. Having not a single bad one of which I know is an accomplishment.
❤❤❤one of my favorites

It’s pretty simple; you don’t like Tom Petty, I don’t like you. 👌
😂😂😂
Understandable ❤

Ist echt so wie kan man in nicht lieben ❤❤

This is a gem. You rarely hear it played, but it always knocks me down. Miss you Tom. Always there in some form.

Simple cords, simple changes, simple progression... an uncluttered and uncomplicated masterpiece... Way to go, Tom Petty..and Jeff Lynn
Jeff Lynn of elo had some influence in this album at that time
@@cosmo411 Jeff Lynne co-wrote this song and co-produced this album.
Same reason I love the song Square One.

A great song on its own but Jeff Lynne’s production, the crash cymbals, acoustic guitar texture, etc… makes it sublime.
Lynne as producer + Petty as songster were an incredible combo
