Question: Why the hell didn't this get any airplay back in the day? This song rocks! Question: Why the hell doesn't this song get any airplay on classic rock stations today???

One reason: In 1981, Petty said that out of “terrible guilt” he offered to give Nicks another song instead of Insider, and played her a few castoffs from that year’s Hard Promises sessions. She jumped at Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around, which Petty co-wrote with guitarist Mike Campbell. “That’s why I wanted you to write a song,” Nicks said. “It’s rock’n’roll, that’s what you do.” Petty thought he was giving her the song, not the recording. “We’d already cut it as a Heartbreakers song, with Tom singing the whole thing,” Tench says. “At the same time, Jimmy Iovine was dating Stevie, though he was keeping it clandestine. And I think Jimmy thought the song could be a hit for her.” The song’s irresistible swampy groove, punctuated by Campbell’s searing guitar stabs and Tench’s Booker T-like organ fills brought out a sassy repartee between the two singers, even if the duet was concocted in the studio by Iovine. Petty’s initial reaction was not enthusiastic: “He plays me Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around, the same track, with her singing,” Petty said in Runnin’ Down A Dream. “I go: ‘Jimmy, you just took the song…’ His comeback was like: ‘This is gonna buy you a house.’ But it pissed me off because it came out at the same time as our single [A Woman In Love], and I think ours suffered."
An absolute rock masterpiece. The soaring chorus that ends with "its not me" and that aching vocal - I can't think of many other songs of unrequited love that compare. RIP Tom - you were a legend. What a horrible Monday.

Not my favorite TP song (Refugee is), but my favorite video. I believe the cinematographer here also worked on The Police's "Every Breath You Take". Both videos were shot in the same place.
I was a medical resident resident writing up an admission in the emergency room late one night in 1989 or 1990... somebody had a TV on behind the desk ... maybe it was on MTV? ... anyway this video was playing. My girlfriend had just dumped me... I'll never forget this.

+Dan J True. Those eyes speak volumes, all by themselves.
Rip
Not my favorite TP song (Refugee is), but my favorite video. I believe the cinematographer here also worked on The Police's "Every Breath You Take". Both videos were shot in the same place.
I love the shifty /timed camera work.
I was a medical resident resident writing up an admission in the emergency room late one night in 1989 or 1990... somebody had a TV on behind the desk ... maybe it was on MTV? ... anyway this video was playing. My girlfriend had just dumped me... I'll never forget this.
when i first heard this song on vinyl, back in the 11th grade. i knew this would always be my alltime favorite from tom petty, and it still is, damn i love this song.
First of all cool name 😉 and I never heard this song on vinyl but on moms cassette and this is a song I can play over and over again 😊
+david banner Yup, Tom Petty's best song. Refugee is a close second.
Does it calm your raging beast inside? :)
It does!
Love this song. So true
This is one of those songs that's always been good, but once you really live through some heartache it really becomes something else/ takes on a whole new meaning. Tom petty...fu kin genius man.
I agree.this song used to rend me open
Yeah
I'll add like 12 thumbs up!!
Yep. Lived through this about 15 years ago. This was one of the songs that got me through the breakup of my marriage.
Rest easy Tom. Thank you for sharing your incredible gift of music.
Grief is the price you pay for love.
My favorite TP song!!🎧
I could listen to this song for hours
I cry because of 1 year without him, the angels in Heaven sing because of 1 year with him.
I think Tom stole.this song right out of all of his fans hearts .
It's 2022. And I swear to Jesus this particular video is just very avant-garde and its own way. I didn't watch MTV when I was younger. I have no interest at all. But now I'm old and ancient as dirt. And really enjoying this old stuff.
Thank you..i will always play your music! ..RIP .💙💙
Best Tom Petty song ever. One of the great ones. I miss the classics. Songs today just don't mean as much as the songs from the 70s and 80s.
God I love this song. One of the absolute greatest bands ever!
I had just come back from America to Sydney ,Australia and reunited with my Australian boyfriend. One night at dinner while listening to music... I asked him to play this song and he took it real personal...wow🧨🧨🧨🧨
Don't think about it...You can go Crazy!!! Tom Petty was a god!!!
This is the best tom petty song ever it just takes me back it touches my soul and damn he was such a gorgeous fella!! That guitar sounds so awesome !
😢😮
I was 21 in 1980 and this was and still is my favorite Petty song. Takes me right back like it was yesterday, a different world and for the better.
ChatGPT1111 Yeah they say that we have progressed since then I'm not so sure about that.
My favorite TP & TH song!!!
R.i.p. gorgeous Tom ❤️❤️❤️
Heartbreaking song, I always wondered if it was personal
I'm living this song now, Tom...still relevant after all these years...the mark of timelessness and genius in music!
He died much too young, such a great artist...he was very popular...but still...I think he was underrated...RIP Tom
My God...This was over 40 years ago?? Seems like yesterday.
Yeah . I was 17..life sure moves
Such a sad beautiful ballad....with a twist of edgy background guitar and drums. I love this song.
Went in 2014 , DTE music theater. My wife's 50th birthday, paid $400 fot 7th row. Best money spent ever. Miss you, Tom
I can feel his lyrics so so much.
This man was an astounding poet, put you right there in that moment that many of us have lived.
When he says ''but it's not me'' , damn it cuts right into the heart and soul. God bless you Tom Petty may you rest in peace.
I read an article not long ago where Tom said that Dylan called him a poet - he said, "It's like someone telling you you're an archer and you know you don't even own a bow!"! Damn, he didn't even know his own genius. I miss him, too. Ironic - the only true heartbreaker.
And the tone in the way he sings it with a slight hurt yet accepting of the reality of it , Tom was a genius .
I thought that I knew style of "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" but after 2:21 I don't know who is this band really are! So cool and 80s! Thank you Tom Petty for this song!
I refuse to believe he is gone
"...but it's not me...." ....story of my life...
