I bought Damm the Torpedoes when I was 15 and played it constantly.I then bought Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and You Gonna Get it and every week checked out the record store for the next album. I still have them all on vinyl and feel a little like my old man with his Elvis records. I get old but Music is timeless. Rock on!
Same here but I was only 11 when Torpeados came out and I bought it. When hard promises came out and I went to buy it I was 50 cents short, so I bought the 45 of The Waiting, with an odd song called "Night Watchmen" on the B side. Almost 56, and though it does' kind of suck getting old I wouldn't change it, because I'm very thankful I grew up in that era of block parties and tackle football in the rain, and where (for the most part) kid's appreciated what they had much more than they do today.
"A Woman In Love" (But It's Not Me) is without doubt one of my very favorite Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers songs of all time. They perform it beautifully live here. In fact, the band is so tight it sounds almost like the record. What I love so much about this composition is the way that the vocals, music and lyrics fit together perfectly to convey the feeling of... yes... HEARTBREAK. It's something everyone has experienced. I was young and going through a break-up with an even younger girlfriend right around the time this album came out. "A Woman In Love" (But It's Not Me) resonated so strongly with me that I never forgot the lyrics. When Tom sings the line: "She used to be the kinda woman, you have and you hold, She could understand a problem, she let the little things go..." It's not just a fond description of his former lover. The quivering sound of Tom's voice also demonstrates the absolute shock he feels that THIS WOMAN chose to leave him for another man. If you're actually IN this situation, the effect is devastating.
Tom had such an honest and straightforward way of telling a story. That’s what make his songs so relatable. The lyrics are simple but the delivery fills in all the blanks. One of a kind.
100% Agree. Songs of my young life-up through my daughters, her surprising me at her Wedding, the Song we danced to: “Last Dance w/Mary Jane” which she wanted to hear every morning driving to daycare @ 5 years old. Much like the Cool Guy scalpin concert tickets in Fast Times @ Ridgemont High ! K O O L …

@@notpub The US festival was that 1982 or 83. I forget very close to the stage and saratoga NY maybe 86 87. I had a great series of slides from the US Festival that got water damaged I look and see if there is anything left.
Holy hell! I love that song, one of their most cinematic in scope, and that was an incredibly tight and astonishing performance of it. A lot is rightly said about Tom, but this is one that points up just how incredible the Heartbreakers always were.
A few years after this song was released I found myself in this situation where I loved somebody who couldn't love me back and another good man loved me but I couldn't see him for what he was. This song encapsulates it perfectly. It's haunting, it's tragic and it is beautiful.
I think most of us have one or more stories like that. Luckily, the second time it happened, I made the right decision. 45 years later and we're still together.
Man, he had a tight band. The wailing on Mike's guitar , he made his guitar talk, much like Clapton. Also love Stan on drums. I like a drummer that doesn't go crazy with fills , just emotional and passionate . That is Stan. Tom's entire band knew exactly the right blend in live performance . it was never over - or under done. Tom truly had genius- level people around him
Saw them do this tune during the Hard Promises tour of 1981. It was a huge hit back then. It was definitely one of the premier songs of that tour. Thanks for those memories to Tom and the rest of the Heartbreakers 💘.
I miss Tom. I saw about 30 of his concerts (California, New York (Beacon, MSG, Jones Beach). Despite his success, he was always the most humble individual. RIP.
I just thank God that I grew up listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers! Rest in peace Tom Petty you deserve it! And thanks for all the great memories! ❤️🙏❤️🎶🌍✌️💯🤔😇❤🤲
At 4:20 that closeup of Tom and Howie is so haunting these days. Two of the best gone painfully much too soon. One of my two favorite bands of all time.
The more I watch TP vids, the more I believe that he really was a poet and musical genius. Not sure who you would even compare him to, maybe Jackson Browne, and I like JB but he's not even in the same building as Tom. RIP and thanks for the music!
I still am not over Tomas Earl not being here. Over a year. Every day, his music still touches me, helps me stay alive. He has always known me in my mind because he wrote what I needed to hear at that time in my life. I keep thinking wondering how is Benmont, Mike?? I know they're playing, etc but man, never one time did I think Tom Petty would not be here. I can't leg go.
Man did Tom have a way with writing tunes but damn did benmont not steal the show every time… what a banging riff totally driven by the keys *chefs kiss*
Stan Lynch was such a big part of the original Heartbreakers pounding those great drum beats and singing that great back up. It was a shame When he & Tom split ways.
@@Boatdockmlh1 He was HILARIOUS... loved the bio .. arranging groupies on the bus; going off with Tom's hero Bob Dylan in Las Vegas to watch Frank Sinatra; he was also a fucking shit disturber and Benmont Tench when drinking which was still going on during Full Moon Fever which was the real reason I believe it was nominally a solo album was and is not to be trusted frankly no matter how much I respect his musical genius. Does that sound horrible? Well it's all about personalities and it didn't work out and the Heartbreakers went on to do other music and this music was possible live yes a lot because of Stan Lynch's explosive drumming which enabled Tom when he was young to let loose. ..... AMEN!!! My FINE and SEXY STAN ❤️ One 😍 BADASS DRUMMER and a Great Voice too!!! ❤️ Sincerely Darlene an American Girl who has a thing for drummers ❤️❤️❤️
I miss the fuck out of him. I remember when you got lucky came out when I was in high school. The little boom box he picks up in the video on MTV I had one identical & I loved that tune. He is the same to me as Elvis & Freddie Mercury, not replaceable.

I’ve always imagined this song as the bookend to one of my other favorites by TPATH, Here Comes My Girl. So many rock tunes about women and relationships, but TP takes it to such a higher level with his songwriting and bittersweet
My wifes favorite singer, Tom Petty everything! Huge collections! Im pretty sure she would have left me for Tom Petty if given the chance so when Tom passed on, she was devistated of course. . . But I was even more devistated than she was because thats they day I knew I was stuck with her the rest of my life. . . .
I have to say Benmont Tench's intro was incredible; aside from that what was it about Tom Petty that would make people soar to the clouds and then want to commit suicide? My late husband whom I miss more than words can express was not an emotionally demonstrative man but this music affected him like nothing else, and I can say the same.
She's a woman in love And he's gonna break her heart to pieces She don't want to know She's a woman in love, she can't let go Time after time, night after night She would look up at me and say she was lonely I don't understand the world today I don't understand what she needed I gave her everything, she threw it all away on nothin' She's a woman in love She's a woman in love And he's gonna break her heart to pieces She don't want to see She's a woman in love, but it's not me

Such a tender song, Tom shows his vulnerability and humility.... so much of what is missing in today’s music.
My favorite Petty song, literally takes me back to 1980.
In the dictionary there should be a picture of Tom Petty next to the word cool. Awesome songs, great songwriter. You are truly missed.
I can't help it. Tom Petty in an interview which I have to situate defined the word cool as 'fear wearing black'. WOW.

Such a loss to the music industry and America! He was definately one of the finest humans.

Such a great song. Love hearing Mike Campbell cut loose at the end
Tom Pretty is, in my opinion the greatest song writer and the Heartbreakers is the best band.
I was at this concert very close to the front best show I've seen. the band was otherworldly to all those musicians a heart felt thank you

Oh how I love watching these live videos! I’m so fortunate that I got to see Tom Petty live a few times. He was the real deal!!!
This song, IMHO, was so simple, but the way he sings it - he makes it deep.❤️ Miss you Tom Petty!🙏

this is early tom. looks so young. he's one that I'll miss 'till I'm gone my own self.
