I was 32 years old when this song was released. I'm 70 now and this is still one of my all time favorite videos. It's a masterpiece.
I am 56 and the VIDEO is pure golg. Best one, of cource: Kate Bush, Running up that hill and more
I was young when this video came out, I thought it was creepy
Clockwork orange ass video
But still one of the greatest musicians :)
I was 15 when I saw this at MTV. I had a girl like that. Of cource, not my falt...
Tom Petty embraced the possibilities of the music video in ways not many rock artists would. He was a legend.
The symbols are borrowed.
Idk this video seems right up David Lee Roth’s alley, “gimme a bottle of anything and a glazed donut to go”
1:04
What do u mean? Alice in wonderland is commonplace and Freemasonic imagery is in like every video ever. Not to mention the cannibalism
Alice in wonderland was written about one of my ancestors Alice Liddell. I am Joshua Liddell 😊
Tom Petty is the greatest Mad Hatter ever.
Thanks for your music.
R.I.P. Tom, so sadly missed...
We'll miss you and your songs Tom Petty
so glad I got to see him live. awesome musician, awesome guy.
Love this may be my fave of all
David Castillo R.I.P. Tom Petty
Super jealous of him. He's up there with Bowie and Prince right now. ♡
"I don't feel you anymore...."
The saddest line ever written. 🥺
You tangled my emotions is why.
🙍♂
🎩#ACT
It is.
It’s soul crushing
Heartbreaking in certain circumstances.... but a huge relief in others.
I first watched this on MTV when they actually played Music.
We're ancient
You mean before music was computerized, digitalized, synthesized, sterilized, plagiarized and homogenized? Yeah, good times. Now if I could just keep those darn kids off my lawn. lol
@@tednorton5150 We know how to use rotatory phones
Yes that has indeed been awhile. Good times, fun times.
agree now they have a Bozo trying to be funny
This video was ahead of its time. It looks like an early 90s video but was released in 1985.
My favorite movie is the original Alice in wonderland. Awesome movie.
Holy shit ... you ain't kidding my friend!!
Wow. Now that you mention it, that is crazy!
Only 5 or 6 years before the early 90s
Dang you're singlehandedly saving Palestine by having that as your pfp 😂
MTV played this video damn near non-stop in 1985 when I was an 11 year old kid and it freaked me smooth the hell out. Now, at 48 it’s freakin awesome. Petty is up there with all the greats. Total new appreciation for his artistry.
Same! I'm 48 too, haha!
Something about his voice soothes my soul. 😏
Same here lol, it was mesmerizing. Also 48 btw :)
I absolutely LOVE this video! I’m 46 🤷♀️
It is freakin' awesome that you claim to be 48 years of age when my 2 son's were born in '88 and '89' and they are 33 and 34 years of age, maybe you missed a Decade Just saying! or is it just embellishment to be unnoticed.!!
So much better than anything you'll hear today
this music video scared the shit out of me when I was little... great song
hehe am listening to it now when 33 and am scared shitless
+Michael rushoki :)
+Caitlin Lock :)
Carl Wallin, me too! especially when they ate her like a cake!
I think it scarred an entire generation.
One of the best videos for MTV ever made, IMO,....
remember when it came out. R.I.P TP
RIP music on MTV
*This song is a masterpiece, this video is a masterpiece, and this band is perfect*
Simply AWESOME
I totally agree! Are you like me because you miss Tom Petty, like I do? He was an awesome musician. Peace.
@@darincampbell171 I miss tom petty
@@CalifornianCuttlefish - I do too! I had mad respect for him. Just another legend gone. Peace.
Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) produced it and wrote it together with Tom.
If it was Dave or Tom who introduced the Danelectro Coral Sitar Guitar to the arrangement I don't know but obviously Dave holds a sitar at the beginning of the video.
Still here in 2024, Tom Petty was a legend
Still is my friend.
Me too
I will always love this song.

Me too!!!
He’s really not gone he’s just out there touring somewhere ❤️❤️
My daughter really got into "Through the Looking Glass" (Alice in Wonderland) as a teen. And when she told me she really digs Tom Petty, I asked her if she liked this video. She never heard this song or saw the video at that time. It felt like giving her 10 birthday presents at once when I pulled up this video and showed her. I still can remember the look on her face as she watched this vid for the first time. It's pure magic to discover something you know a loved one will absolutely adore and be able to give it to them in a snap of your fingers. Rare moments like that are what make life wonderful.
+Tom Mullin I love Jello.
+Tom Mullin Sir I hope your daughter isn't addicted to the poppy. Who knows maybe only shrooms)
Privacy Advocate
I might agree with you, if only I knew wtf you were talking about???
Are you suggesting that reading classic literature is a 'gateway drug' that leads to opiate abuse? Books are meant to be read, not burned. Don't fear reading, it's never a waste of time.
+Tom Mullin Lewis Carroll was an infamous opiate abuser, did you actually watch through the looking glass, this wasn't clear to you? If you think a sober mind created such a fantasy clearly about using, I don't know what to say. If he wasn't high he was clearly insane. Let's just say opium was readily available at the time. If this whole nonsense story isn't a poppy dream, then, well he is just insane. Don't ask me how I know, please.
I didn't 'watch' the book. And I was aware of Carroll's opiate use. You implied that my daughter was a potential drug user for reading a book. Don't do that, I don't react well to such childish implications.
Simply one of the best and most haunting songs ever written! RIP Tom.
Agree
Hi I recommend a song called 'Where I Come From' By Robert Nix
I can still remember: nice weather, windows wide open, stereo at 10. What a time!
I recommend face in the snow by opeth
When I think haunting song it's always "here comes the rain again" by the Eurythmics for me!
Always been a fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. RIP Tom Petty
❤😮
"I don't feel you anymore", I always loved that. It perfectly captures the erosion of a relationship so succinctly. You could write a dissertation on why people fall out of love with their significant other, especially when the s.o. has done nothing wrong, but Tom sums it up in 5 words. Wherever the feeling goes, it's gone.
it's about the ma5onic influence in the (music) industry.
if you're talking about that relationship, you're dead on. except heterodyning.
Agreed. I also like ,
“Stop walking down my street, who do you expect to meet”🎉
@jasonB_13 , please don't have children . . .
@@missmaam792 you're about 20 years too late on the sentiment. I am curious what I said that rubbed you the wrong way though.
Because commitment is about honoring your promises, to your partner and your children, even when you don't feel like it.
Feelings are transitory, but children and their need of a mature wise father are not.
Tom Petty as The Mad Hatter is just inspired! One of the best music videos of the 80s, but what am I saying - of all time, really.
RIP the man, just because he won't be coming around here no more doesn't mean we will forget
Nice
J Jack Quinn we i shall forgot
Never he was extraordinary

This is a masterpiece on so many levels
Good music just resonates the soul.

It's become one of my go-to songs when I load up RUclips. He far outranks Johnny Depp's Hatter
I wonder if Stevie Nicks likes this song?
@@brucecolosimo592 Petty wrote it for her to sing, but she loved his rendition so told him to go with it instead. Would be interesting to hear her do it though, sadly we lost Tom along the way.
Love Tom petty music
As an 80s kid whose dad was a musician I grew up on Tom Petty. I still can’t believe he’s gone... but he will never be forgotten. Awesome guy with incredible talent.
OH MY GOD WHAT INSTRUMENT DID YOUR DAD PLAY?
Sad...but glad I had the opportunity to hear his music in the 80's.
Always was

It seemed to me that there was always a Tom Petty/Petty and the Heartbreakers album ready for me--he was the soundtrack to my freaking LIFE. God bless that man.
They really nailed the strange sinister vibe in this video.
It complements the song beautifully. Well acted by all. Cheers Tom Petty

There’s a reason but you better don’t look for it
@@tombstoneblues1023 Exactly :( Adrenoch.... all that we did not even imagine was truly going on with these V.I.P. famous people during the 80es

Tom Petty was such a cool dude. I miss him!😢
Mr. Petty is proof that being easy going is the coolest way to be.
Yes,and such a great singer.
Cheers mudafukaz
Tom isn't always easy going he has a dark side to him. Did you know he was a gravedigger prior to being a musician because at that time it was the only other job that let him wear his hair long? Get a haircut? Ha over my dead body he said.
@Jeffrey Blake Her malfunction is attention seeking and she is no lady.
@AndreaLuise Ca. I only liked the song didn't like the video
Damn these old 80s videos bring back so many memories of a simpler time wasting a hot summer day watching MTV , (when they played music videos) just for the chance they may play a video from your favorite band. And all the great songs and vids of the 80s you would see and take for granted. What a great time to grow up !
i thought this was 90's
Mmmmmm..... 1985. Gen X claims Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Well take the Traveling Wilburys while we're at it
*R.I.P Tom...you're legend is still alive...*

It's important to know when a relationship has run its course. That's the meaning I get from this song.
Yeah. Been on both sides.
😐
Yeah, I really see that now
I KNOW I REALLY AM A DRAIN ON PEOPLE, WHO WEAR OUT,, ALL THE LIES, THAT ARE TOLD THAT ONLY MAKE THEM LOOK GOOD, ON THE SURFACE, SOONER OR LATER, I JUST WONT, LET THEM, BELIEVE THAT I HAVE DOUBTS IN THEIR TELLINGS TO ME, EVEN THOUGH I AM UNCERTAIN, I CHOOSE TO SHOW TRUST, AND THEN THEY BEGIN,, TO STOP LYING.. UNTIL THE LIES THEY HAD TO TELL, ARE REVEALED, AND THATS WHEN, YOU FORGIVE THEM.
@ComfyCat818 it actually is. It was written by Stevie Nicks about Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics

It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. RIP Tom Petty man this day sucks...
It’s weird missing someone you never meet, miss you Tom 😢
It's because the world has lost some of it's majesty and genius. It's heart breaking to know that in a relatively short time we will have lost all of our maestros of melody. No, it isn't weird, because artist like Tom Petty reached and touched the world, and left it better in passing.

I was born in the late 80s--around that time, I heard a lot of his music without knowing who he was--but really liked it. When I was in college, I was finally able to piece together that a lot of songs I heard in the 90s while growing up as a kid did indeed belong to Tom Petty. When my father told me today that he died, I thought he was kidding at first because he mentioned it WAY too casually and this was a death NOBODY was expecting at all. RIP, Tom.

If I may be so bold, I think that this video is pure genius on more levels than I can count. I can't imagine the time it took 2 recreate ANY part of Alice in Wonderland for a music video when technology and money for an almost unknown artistic genre was not the norm. Even the first 15 seconds of the song, as simple and straightforward as it is ROCKS. No gimmicks. Mr. Petty was at the top of his game. And even now although he may not be with us, I bet he still is.
Um, it's FREEMASONARY. Did you not see the black and white EVERYWHERE??? SATANIC. AND CANNIBALISM.

I agree with the first part, it is a great song. But definitely not ahead of anything anyone else was doing. Aka Talking Heads, David Bowie, New Order, DEVO, and XTC just to name a few that sounded like this before this song came out.

Oh and the beyond progressive songs and videos of Peter Gabriel..."Sledge Hammer" for one!
You forgot Prince. In '85 he had "Raspberry Beret". That sounded VERY Progressive and Otherworldly.
Still can’t wrap my head around him being gone… he’s just out there touring somewhere ❤️❤️❤️❤️
When I watched the Tom Petty four hour documentary on Netflix ( a must as it's worth the four hours) I was shocked that this was a Stevie Nicks song. She couldn't figure out all the lyrics for it. So she took it to Petty, as they worked together on several songs like Stop Dragging my Heart Around and Insider. Tom loved it and said sorry Stevie, I'm taking the song. LOL. He finished the lyrics and It's a great thing as we got this gem.
Stevie is a gem too
Ha, that makes total sense - sounds just like a Nicks song.
I thought she inspired it by saying this to him. But George Harrison wrote it?
@@magdalenabarys996 George Harrison didn't write it. Stevie Nicks and Dave Stewart were making the music. Stevie was writing lyrics for it and Stewart had already written part of the music for it. The drum part with the "don't come around here no more". Stevie just couldn't figure out the rest of the lyrics for how the song should go. At that point she turned to Tom and asked him to finish writing it. The rest is history.
I don't see no 4 hour Petty documentary on Netflix. Give the name and year of release please.
Rest in peace, Tom. Thank you for the music.
