I just watched the video of Tom Petty's *Free Fallin'* It brought back memories of my first year in Budapest in 92/93 when I lived in a one-bedroom apartment in a four-unit house on "Eagle Hill" with a balcony overlooking a modest garden. I would often exercise to that tune and the others on that album. I can recall the smells of that time and the liberation I felt living there in that freshly post-communist world so far away from my uncle's fabric store in Rochester, hospitals and all things American. I was free falling right along with old Tom. So bittersweet to recall, three decades later.
When I was 16, I went on vacation to the US with my parents and we did a helicopter flight through the Grand Canyon. The pilot played this song and managed to time it in such a way that the chorus kicked in at the exact moment we were passing a cliff and the canyon would open up in front of us. It was amazing.
Isn't it awe-inspiring when events line up almost perfectly in life? Your Grand Canyon story is a phenomenal example of that. Sounds like a fantastic experience!
Wow must have been a nice experience. But isn't it too loud in a helicopter to listen to a song? I guess the volume of the song must have been loud also
I was fortunate to meet Tom Petty back in 1990. He was the most nicest sincere man I ever spoken to. He did not have the..I am a rock star attitude..I have posted this on many of Tom's songs..He was just so nice and down to earth. I miss him and I can not stop my tears for him.We LOVE you Tom, ROCK IN PEACE..You are at the room at the top.
Yeah my father took me to see him for the first time when I was 7 years old. I was hooked. Got to meet him a couple of times during his life as I got older. He was so sincere and humble. We played this song at my father's memorial service years ago when he died. Brings back alot of memories

That's as bout as much obsequious treacle as I have ever seen crammed into one paragraph...kudos... er, most greatest kudos.
My Dad bought me my first concert tickets, Tom Petty, and we went and saw him at the Greek theatre together, and Stevie nicks was his special guest. Such a great concert. Now I can’t listen to him without missing my Dad. RIP Dad. Miss you every day.
Man, that’s one great memoir of your dad link to this song. Must have been an awesome day. They do say life is all about making treasured memories. I’m sure your dad’s up there singing this song with Tom, god bless.
I'm 66 years old, I had two reasons to learn English, one aviation and the other this guy, his music changed half of my life, it's a shame I didn't have time to spend it on the live stage, God knows what he's doing
This was my Dads favorite Petty song. He passed away 4 months ago. Tom Petty is my all time favorite, now I listen to this song more than usual. I miss you Dad. Happy Father's Day in heaven
My Dad died on Fathers Day. I had spent 3 days at my sister's house where my Dad was for the last month of his life but I had to get back home. My sister drove me down to the ferryboat and as I was getting out of the car I said "I'll see ya later Dad".... He kinda smiled a little and said "I hope so". It was so sad cuz I knew that I'd never see him again and I think he knew it too. Then they drove away and he passed away the next morning on Fathers Day. Thanx for listening to me
Still shocked about Tom Petty dying which in my opinion was very unexpected. A pure musical genius and legend. RIP Tom Petty, gone but never forgotten!
Don't cry because he is gone, smile because he was here. R.I.P Tom Petty... edit: why tf does this have so many likes. edit 2: not to be that guy but thanks for the likes. nice to see everyone coming together on the replies to the comment, ill try to respond to new replies in the future. the line "gonna leave this world for a while" hits hard. his impact on music is great, his time here was legendary, we were lucky to have shared the same time with him when we did, and we should all be incredibly grateful for it. theres not a day that goes by where i dont think about him and his legacy, and even though hes gone, we can still live that legacy as many times as we want. ill say it again, R.I.P Tom Petty.
Again, we lost one great musican! Not enough tears for this great guy. same age, same generation and now- my dreams are gone! Rest in peace Tom and best regards to all the others friends and musicans in heaven!
ghedi yea me too man .. I was.bailing like a baby ...these artist don't realize how much they help people like you & me that suffer from depression.. it freaking sucks 😞
This is the first song I learned to sing, in the car while my mom was driving listening to the cassette - I sung along to the chorus, as a 3 year old in 89 - "FREEEEE FALLINNNN!". It's my earliest memory and one I will cherish forever. Thanks Mom!
At east there will be a massive concert going on up in heaven: Freddie Mercury, John Bonham, prince, George Michael, George Harrison, John Lennon, David Bowie, Michael Jackson
My ghost friend Kyle’s dad co worker, Lenny, would sing this song at work. He often brought him over when the nanny got sick. He would smile and kick around his legs to the beat. Lenny sadly passed away four years ago from stomach cancer. Kyle’s dad sang this song at his funeral, but burst into tears. He missed his beautiful voice. This was the reason that he cried whenever he heard it now. His dad died this year due to bladder cancer. I think they are now happy in heaven.
This song really holds a special place in my heart. My daughter used to sing this with me in the car when she was little. Just goes to show you how music paints memories in our lives. Thanks Tom Petty. Songs like this shows why you are a legend...
musicmankenn dude that's awesome, me and my daughter have a bunch of songs we love singing together also, started her at 5. And now she is 9 and actually requests these songs on the drive to school every morning , makes me lower it when we get close to school though lol , got forbid her friends may actually hear real musicians right .....
musicmankenn that is super sad. I wish he was still here. My step mom started to cry when she hered what happened! My brother and me would sing a bunch of his songs and we still do
I saw Tom Petty perform with the Heartbreakers three times. I was never disappointed at his concerts. He gave everyone his all every time. He was phenomenal.

A song about leaving a woman you love cause of how much she helped you and changed you for the better but made you realize you ain’t ready yet. Iconic song.
The saddest thing is that I don’t have a chance to listen to him Live 😔😔. The happiest thing is that we are blessed to enjoy his unique art and legacy. I love Tom Petty 💚❤️

To everyone one out there. It's a truly wonderful to have artists like TP and the ones we've lost recently from the 80s. But they gave us something we can all cherish forever. There music will always live on. So enjoy every moment you have on this Earth, cause there's no guarantee for anyone tomorrow. And remember the world Meets no one half way, if you want it go get it and never let anyone tell you that can't do something. RIP Tommy P
This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. She’s always in our heart.
As a Brit growing up in the 90s, this is one of the songs that made me obsessed with America and the general concept of the middle American idyll and the American dream.
That's strange because when you watch carefully, the video is critical towards the bully-like approach in the relationships. The song is great but it does not really praise America.
It reminds me of skateboarding and punk rock, growing up in the 90's. Obviously, this music is not punk, but the guy skating on the ramp looks exactly like my friend's older brother back then. Except he had a green mohawk and listened to The Cramps.
Damn. I'll never forget, ten years ago, when I played "Free Fallin'" on my cd boombox for 24 hours straight in my college dorm after a brutal 6 hours of back-to-back final exams in physics, physical chemistry and advanced calculus as I lay in bed, in and out of sleep the entire day. Thanks for the incomparable music, Tom Petty; the Pearly Gates await.
Here to pay my condolences. RIP Tom Petty. Thank you for your contributions to the world.

Sara -- he had a heart attack on Monday morning 2nd Oct.; his wife found him unconscious, and that night he died in the hospital. He was 66. :'-(
I just watched the video of Tom Petty's *Free Fallin'* It brought back memories of my first year in Budapest in 92/93 when I lived in a one-bedroom apartment in a four-unit house on "Eagle Hill" with a balcony overlooking a modest garden.
That's awesome
Isn't it awe-inspiring when events line up almost perfectly in life? Your Grand Canyon story is a phenomenal example of that. Sounds like a fantastic experience!
Sitting in a helicopter and hear something about "free falling"? 🤔 Hm, I don't know.
Wow must have been a nice experience. But isn't it too loud in a helicopter to listen to a song? I guess the volume of the song must have been loud also
What a legend!
I was fortunate to meet Tom Petty back in 1990. He was the most nicest
sincere man I ever spoken to. He did not have the..I am a rock star
attitude..I have posted this on many of Tom's songs..He was just so nice
and down to earth. I miss him and I can not stop my tears for him.We
LOVE you Tom, ROCK IN PEACE..You are at the room at the top.
Wait did Tom petty died?

Rip Tom.. this comment is everything..
I’m sure your dad’s up there singing this song with Tom, god bless.
rest in peace to yo Dad!
God Bless you for keeping him alive in your heart. You will see him again.

@@tiagomoraisilva I'm 23 and I know how great the song is
I'm 66 years old, I had two reasons to learn English, one aviation and the other this guy, his music changed half of my life, it's a shame I didn't have time to spend it on the live stage, God knows what he's doing
He's dead, so God does know
Cantava muito 😢
He died at the same age you are now
That is so good to hear!
He's a guardian angel for millions. His music is his legacy which gives us strength and joy.
These lyrics take on a different meaning now, RIP Tom...

@@leahdivine5071 very much so, it just played on the radio on my ride home, now I'm here listening.
Thanx for listening to me
Hi👋
Still shocked about Tom Petty dying which in my opinion was very unexpected. A pure musical genius and legend. RIP Tom Petty, gone but never forgotten!

Here in 2021, listening like he is still here. Because legends never die.

Some of the best music ever produced, long live Tom Petty.
What a lovely comment !!!!!
Wasn't the biggest fan of his, but he has a song or two in the soundtrack of my life

Here because Tom was the bomb, never mind the lockdown.
His music has not aged at all.
And it never will...
They call it classic for a reason 😄
Good night, Tom. You were special.
The Heartbreakers broke our hearts. But, he'll still be live in them!
He was one of the most personal artist i ve ever heard
He isn't dead yet that report was false but, he is very bad shape.
Supposedly he's still hanging on. Please don't rush to say ppl are dead. It's rather cruel.
If he is ok then that is awesome news! But what I am saying isn't cruel. it is a reaction to multiple news outlets.
GOD invited Tom into HIS Heavenly Palace so we could have GODLY music to fill our ears.
Again, we lost one great musican! Not enough tears for this great guy. same age, same generation and now- my dreams are gone! Rest in peace Tom and best regards to all the others friends and musicans in heaven!
don't worry, everybody learns to fly :')
I can't believe it😓😓😓😓

Hi Matt, How you doing
If you live in Los Angelos for sure

Yeah, definitely too young; I actually thought Tom Petty was older. Death sucks.
tbh the dude was 66 and looked like 50...death always sucks but he was 66
I don't think 66 is what it used to be; i feel age 80 is the tipping point nowadays.
HE IS STILL ALIVE

This is the first song I learned to sing, in the car while my mom was driving listening to the cassette - I sung along to the chorus, as a 3 year old in 89 - "FREEEEE FALLINNNN!". It's my earliest memory and one I will cherish forever. Thanks Mom!

My bad..... Just realized my mistake. I knew that, I meant George Harrison. Brain fart. XD
RIP Tom. What a terribly awful day it's been. :(
The shooting in Las Vegas....With over 58 killed and over 500 something wounded. And now Tom passes away? F*ck this day.

To everyone one out there. It's a truly wonderful to have artists like TP and the ones we've lost recently from the 80s. But they gave us something we can all cherish forever. Nothing better than a good song to get rid of sadness
This song makes me sad. It gives me Hiraeth, which is something that cannot be translated.
So bloody true

As a Brit growing up in the 90s, this is one of the songs that made me obsessed with America and the general concept of the middle American idyll and the American dream.
accomify Awesome 😎
It makes me reminisce about the malls here in The Valley back when I was a kid in the 90s.
I'll bet it was great back then, whats it like today?
That's strange because when you watch carefully, the video is critical towards the bully-like approach in the relationships. The song is great but it does not really praise America.
It reminds me of skateboarding and punk rock, growing up in the 90's. Obviously, this music is not punk, but the guy skating on the ramp looks exactly like my friend's older brother back then. Except he had a green mohawk and listened to The Cramps.
After all these years I still miss Tom Petty. May God bless him.
