My mother loves watching him because he tells stories like her dad used to. Her favorites were always his stories about sneaking around behind enemy lines and managing to get food and supplies for his unit in WWII.

Once again, my husband stopped to listen on his way through the kitchen. He stayed for the entire story. When done he went out of the room. Came back and said, "Yah, he tells good stories." I'm going to get him addicted to dark, strange and mysterious stories before long. Then he will be "one of us". One of us! One of us!
This took such a strange turn. I honestly thought it was gonna end up Carl was so determined that he created the cure for tuberculosis. Def wasn't thinking necrophilia.

Can you imagine the chills that ran down her spine when she saw her sisters corpse inside that house with nothing but a wooden door between her and a crazy person at the end of a long driveway?
I have no clue as to why the authorities let that guy go free. Even back then, when knowledge of mental health was practically nonexistent, anyone could tell that guy needed to be locked in a loony bin.
@@viennasavage9110 I’m pretty sure the concept of seeing the decaying corpse of a dead relative in a man’s house and that man knows you are related to this corpse will definitely raise a pretty big flag
@@evapo7 The corpse wasn't murdered or anything. And yes, theres a huge red flag there. I just don't think this guy is necessarily dangerous. Just crazy maybe.
The second you said he was in the window ballroom dancing with a girl, I knew exactly how this story was gonna end. Except for the whole building of a starship thing.
not one single upload ever even comes close to disappointing. The quality of the video itself, the quality of the audio, how genuinely involved and passionate he gets about each story...its so engaging and I find myself completely immersed in each story, even if i've heard about it before. So, so well done. Literally the best storyteller on this entire platform.
Absolutely. And don’t forget how unbiased he tells every story! I love hearing his take on stories I’ve already heard and see how other people tend to spin things to fit a certain narrative! Mr Ballen definitely has a unique way to suck the viewer into his content. Love it!!!
This is why I like Mr. Ballen. I knew of this story for the longest time, it's a pretty famous case. However, I never heard about the dreams he had, which played an enormous part in motivating him, nor have I ever heard his insane idea to shoot her corpse into the stratosphere. Even when you're like "oh, well I already know this one". You need to watch it anyways cause you're almost guaranteed to learn even more about what you thought you knew.
I went from horrified to hysterical laughter in the span of seconds when you described his plan to shoot her into the stratosphere. Can you imagine if it had worked? She comes back to life only to slam into the earth at terminal velocity moments later? This guy was definitely on some sort mission, I'll give him that.
I have heard this story before on Ask A Mortician. There is some conjecture that Carl Tanzler consumated their relationship when he had her corpse. Apparently, the police where so shocked at what they found there is no evidence for said consumation. But given Mr. Tanlzer's mental health, it is possible. I live in Florida and I can't even begin to imagine how Mr. Tanzler lived with a corpse. Florida weather is basically the surface of sun or the Coronasphere of the sun all year round. There isn't enough perfume to cover up Eau de decomposition. Just saying....
so this dude's logic was to send her into outer space??? yeah sure whatever that makes a whole lotta freaking sense , so the laws steps in and bust the man then lets the man go free , yeah all this makes sense im laughing at the logic of all this
There was a similar case in Hong Kong where a woman kept her husband's corpse for years, believing that a certain ritual could bring her love one back alive. There was even a movie based on this story. It was creepy yet sad and heart-warming at the same time.
It's really frightening how much his mental health deteriorated after she passed away. It simply goes to show that you need to get help before it's too late.
@@nikolozka1 lol you saying that shows what you know. He had a few thousand on RUclips at first, then posted clips on tiktok which helped him grow his audience
This is one of the most disturbingly dismal & painfully pitiful stories I've ever heard. Unrecognized & untreated mental illness ... simply tragic. Thank you for all your efforts & hard work to share another outstanding story with us!
mm.... I still believe in the unknown, metaphysics and supernatural. Nikola Tesla even said he would be given visions of technological advancements in his mind and would be able to break it apart like it was right in from of him in order to build it and put it together, like it was something sending him this information. The story of Jesus has similar things about being told to journey across Egypt. We'll never really know.
I read this comment before I heard the bulk of the story. I wondered what you might have meant. Did this girl have mental illness? Was this like an Emily Rose story? ( Assuming it was mental illness). This is terrifying. It's understandable that the dream was very troubling. Maybe, giving her an x ray, and doing the best he could was all God wanted for him?
I first heard this story when I was a child and it creeped me out. Still does even as an adult. Just the audacity that Karl would steal Elena's dead body and then desecrate her corpse and keep it in his home for 7 years is beyond disturbing. The case of the Russian doll maker reminds me of this, because he was in the same state of mind as Karl, where he truly believed he did nothing wrong and was saving the children he "turned into dolls". There's gotta be some sort of psychological explanation for the two cases being so similar, because the two men lived for YEARS with corpses they "modified" into dolls basically. It's creepy, but also somewhat intriguing in a way, as to questioning why they did it, because it makes absolutely no rational sense. Karl was also barred from ever visiting Elena's gravesite again, and I believe they had to move it once or twice before he finally died.
Not much of a crime compared to the usual suspects on this channel, because he didn’t really hurt anyone besides possibly emotionally damaging the family members
I would say it's less "audacity" and more "severe mental illness", obviously. He did have some premeditation for the "keeping up appearances" thing, but for all we know, his subconscious manifested that thought process as Alena's idea. He was clearly sick. I feel bad for everyone in this story. I think too many people don't realize how being even a little out-of-touch with reality can have intense consequences. People with this level of mental illness (and even some less evere forms) don't interact with the world or view things the same way a typical, healthy person would. It almost seems like a weird twisting of body dysmorphia in a way. Like he still saw her, and that, combined with his care of her, just makes it bizarre. These cases, they usually have some vague idea what they're doing isn't considering normal or even moral, but everything else that ill overrides that, unfortunately, as what happens with most mental health issues. I'd suggest having a bit more empathy. You CAN feel bad for the family and the "perpetrator", too. Not everyone does things in malice or to hurt others.
Someday, when I’m old, and my grandchildren ask me to tell them a story, I’ll say: “Are you a fan of the strange dark and mysterious?” Then I’ll proceed to introduce them to Mr.Ballen. Thanks for your great stories and your service to our country.

Easily one of the creepiest stories I have ever heard. Kudos to Mr. Ballen for managing to tell it so well and in such a respectful manner, despite the macabre subject
I literally had no idea that I've heard of this story multiple times before... until the moment you showed the picture of the mausoleum, at which point I said out loud: "OH, IT'S THIS GUY." The fact that you can hide a story I've encountered ad nauseam for that long speaks volumes of the quality of the storytelling you provide on this channel. Simply amazing skill.
The fact that you mentioned a mausoleum makes me certain this is Carl tanzler. I'm only 19 seconds and I hope I'm right edit: two seconds later, I scrolled down the comments and saw the names Carl and Elena. Einstein wants what I have
I accidentally found Mr Ballen and now my entire family gets excited for his weekly posts and even podcasts!! Those podcasts feel so real, I could hear the story as if I was the one there!
Since I watch alot of horror content on RUclips sometimes you cover stories I have already heard about, and yet i still watch them because of how good you are at retelling the story. Your presentation stands out from the rest, keep up the good work
My favourite thing about Mr Ballen is that he's the most relatable person... Like he doesn't know how to do this "life" thing either but he can tell a good story so when he does his advertisements he's 200% honest and yes, relatable
I think that feeling that its like a campfire story which makes Mr Ballen such an amazing storyteller. Not just the detail in his stories, but the ease he can put the listener at make him spectacular... and the dislikes are the Like buttons lawyers.
Incredible story, I can't imagine what she must have thought as she caught a glimpse of her sister through the gap in the door! That would just be so shocking! Great video as usual mate
Honestly, this part doesn't make sense to me...how in the HELL would you recognize a decomposed corpse that you saw for a literal second, maybe even less? There is no way in hell that thing actually looked like her sister.

The most impressive part of the story is how the woman recognized her sister, despite her being completely mummified and looking nothing like her sister anymore lol
I think the family and sister already had a strong suspicion that he had done something with her body, and when the sister got that glimpse of the mummified corpse through the doorway, that was just the confirmation.

Completely agree with what you wrote. I’ve heard this story many times but I was captivated the entire time. Also I’ve never heard the part about the airship or his plans to send her to the stratosphere. And the Hello Fresh spot at the beginning was downright hilarious!!
@@cl7510 Apparently...we all know that bringing her corpse up and into the Stratosphere would not have brought her back...it would have just killed him off with the lack of air and sub cold temperatures...beside a propeller plane could never fly that high...
I looked up German sources on this and it's even more horrifying than you'd think. The whole vision thing aside, which he made up later, he was a conman and necrophile. When he arrived in the US, he pretended to be a doctor and gave himself a more noble sounding name and the title Graf = count/earl. Elena (who was called Helen by her family) was married, but our Doctor Creepy became obsessed with her and started gifting her jewellery and shit. After she died, he visited her mausoleum every day. People in the neighbourhood, who'd gotten used to seeing him there (and no, he wasn't just crying in there, he'd climbed into Helen's resting place to abuse her corpse and slept there), noticed that he stopped showing up after two years and began talking. Helen's sister heard the rumours and, unsettled by them, began investigating aka checking out the mausoleum and notified the police. Meanwhile, the Earl of Insanity was living it up with Helen's remains. He'd played mad scientist after stealing her body in an airplane wreck with coathangers and wires to stabilise her bones, glued hair to her head because she was decomposing fast due to his treatment of her corpse, stuffed her out, bandaged her up like a mummy and made a permanent "tunnel" opening for her vaginal canal to make raping her body easier. I was too busy not throwing my phone out of the window to look further into that part. Anyway, he then took her home. Helen's sister was by then enraged because she'd figured pretty much out what he was up to and drove to his house to confront him because, apparently, the police was too busy doing whatever policemen in the US were doing back then. Burgers, beer and waving flags, I imagine. Doctor Deranged made an surprised Pikachu face and Helen's body was discovered. The mummified remains could be visited by the public for three days and then she was buried at an undisclosed location. Frankenstein couldn't be prosecuted for his mausoleum shenanigans because they had been two years prior and laws are weirder than showing a mummy to the public. He eventually died, allegedly with the mask he'd made of Helen's face in his hands. Highly doubt that one. And that's just some of the stuff I found in a few reports and German write-ups about this. Sad that so much of this video is about the vision nonsense and not about the truly insane shit you can read about this dude. He became so obsessed with a woman that he literally took her once she was unable to tell him _no_ and got off on technicalities. He was found to be sane, by the way, but I'd argue that you have to be some special kind of insane to do ... all of that.
Thanks for adding this, really appreciate this -- came to the comments to see how exactly tf somebody gets away with this, video didnt really explain that or all the other stuff you shared either 🤢

Based on the title of the video (Dead girl comes back to life) I thought that shortly after her apparent death he would find a way to revive her. Then in the story, she died, she was buried, then 7 years passed. Then he was seen dancing with her. That's when I knew this would have a creepy ending and not a happy one.
I've heard the story before, but MrBallen makes it feel brand new. It's a wild ride. You feel a tiny bit of sympathy for Carl because clearly he wasn't in his right mind, but Elena's poor family. I can't even imagine making that kind of discovery. 😬

I believe he was telling the truth about the dream. Or maybe the dream came after he actually met her but it made him think he had the dream his whole life. Either way he "believed" it was his God given duty to save her. Nothing says love like living with your beloved's corpse in the Florida heat!
I remember this story from years ago on Autopsy w/ Dr. Michael Baden. I think after the family got Elena’s body back she was buried in a undisclosed location so he couldn’t find her.He also made another mannequin of her body and died next to it years later. Crazy story. Love your channel!
One of the things not mentioned here about this case, is that the media at the time sympathized with him, and they viewed it as a "romantic" tale. 🤢🤮🤮🤮 That poor girl and her family.
I wonder if constantly seeing Elena in his dreams made him obsessed with her and want to save her but in a way a husband would feel about saving their wife. I think when he saw Elena irl, he realized she was very pretty and became even more invested in her life. I think he wasn't willing to let her go in the most extreme way possible. I hope her family lineage is doing well. I can't imagine how traumatizing that must've been for them.
Do you not sympathize with him? I feel it hard not to. I would hope that I would never be of such a broken mind that I would do something like this but you don't know what darkness your mind would go to. Imagine a loved one, a wife, husband, or a child that you loved more than yourself dying and you know it's your entire life ambition to protect them. What would your mind do? I don't think any of us have the answer and it's easy to look at this man and call him names when in reality he was just very sick and needed mental help and probably time to grieve which he never got, he never left the state of denial. Hard to not feel sorry for him while also feeling sorry for the girls family simultaneously.
I lived in Key West for nearly 30 years. This is by far the creepiest true story I've ever heard concerning that city -- way worse than Robert the Doll. To hear MrB tell it was outstanding! 😁 Made my day!
His journal was made into a book, and it's awful. It's obviously from his point of view, he thought that they loved each other. But he talks about how she was constantly telling him to leave her alone, he was upsetting her family, the family was constantly telling him to leave them all alone. He would get upset when they would go to other doctors, saying he was the only one who could cure her, telling the family they were killing her by not letting him treat her. He was obsessed, and obviously mentally unwell, but also acted horribly against her and the family both. The book is called "The Lost Diary of Count Von Cosel" after a name that he gave himself. It's interesting and disturbing

I wonder was this the story that inspired "last dance with Mary Jane"?
Same. Didn't know about the space part
Whoa, just whoa!
We must meet.
Yeah he's said some stories I heard before too but I always found out more information about them too!
I went from horrified to hysterical laughter in the span of seconds when you described his plan to shoot her into the stratosphere. Can you imagine if it had worked? She comes back to life only to slam into the earth at terminal velocity moments later? This guy was definitely on some sort mission, I'll give him that.
Lmao
I have heard this story before on Ask A Mortician. There is some conjecture that Carl Tanzler consumated their relationship when he had her corpse. Apparently, the police where so shocked at what they found there is no evidence for said consumation. But given Mr. Tanlzer's mental health, it is possible.
I live in Florida and I can't even begin to imagine how Mr. Tanzler lived with a corpse. Florida weather is basically the surface of sun or the Coronasphere of the sun all year round. There isn't enough perfume to cover up Eau de decomposition. Just saying....

This is one of the most disturbingly dismal & painfully pitiful stories I've ever heard. Unrecognized & untreated mental illness ... simply tragic. Thank you for all your efforts & hard work to share another outstanding story with us!

Nikola Tesla even said he would be given visions of technological advancements in his mind and would be able to break it apart like it was right in from of him in order to build it and put it together, like it was something sending him this information. The story of Jesus has similar things about being told to journey across Egypt. We'll never really know.
Oh and to make it all worse he has “relations” with her postmortem 🥴🤮

Wait, we have to know more about this doll maker story. It sounds even worse than Carl's.
Not much of a crime compared to the usual suspects on this channel, because he didn’t really hurt anyone besides possibly emotionally damaging the family members
That doll case makes me sick
Not everyone does things in malice or to hurt others.
it's the lies they told themselves

Burgers, beer and waving flags is still what the neglect and ignore, nonsense in blue do to this day!
Thanks for adding this, really appreciate this -- came to the comments to see how exactly tf somebody gets away with this, video didnt really explain that or all the other stuff you shared either 🤢

Although I've heard this case before, it's never been told so well.

Okay, Ballen… This is one of those rare times where I totally was caught off guard when a story took a crazy turn! Great job!
Ask A Mortician did a whole bit about it and that's how I learned more about this story. It's a great take.
Grow up kid
Wow! I was not expecting that ending! I was thinking this was gonna be one of those buried alive stories, or pronounced dead but then wake up at the funeral kinda thing. Carl really went off the deep end 😬.
Mr.Ballen you always know how to keep us coming back for more, thanks for all the Dark, Strange and Mysterious stories, I love em! 🤗😉 Have a great weekend!!! See ya next Friday.
@@ordinarynocturne That’s what I was thinking when he said the sister saw Elena sitting in the chair 😬 Then Mr.Ballen told us the Elaborate moves he had gone through to make her as human as possible 😯 Creepy AF!! I did feel bad for Carl though, just a lil bit cause of the whole dream and everything, but let’s face it Carl was Cray Cray 😜.
@@alfredvickers4054 Yeah Carl went a lil over board with the whole trying to save her life, instead he turned her into a Smelly, wax puppet. I feel sorry for her family having to go through all of that again. Crazy ending for sure!
I was thinking the same thing! He became so obsessed over that “vision” it eventually destroyed mentally. I kinda feel bad for the guy. Crazy, but he meant well.
Don’t know how going through these hard times would be without the dark, strange, and mysterious. Thank you for your service and for the amazing content.
I feel ya! Stories about the strange, dark, and mysterious delivered in story format is really the highlight of my day.
Mr. Ballen reminds me of that one uncle who comes around on the holidays with all the great stories. Love this channel!
Exactly! I commented that it’s like having my late brother to listen to again. What a good guy.
@@glauvie I get it. It's like having my late dad here again. Any time we went on long drives we'd talk about this kind of stuff. Both of us had our own personal experiences to talk about too. we had both witnessed some very strange stuff. In fact for the week before he unexpectedly passed he was having some very unusual experiences and telling me about them because he had had the same ones years before and I remember he told me about them way back then when I was young. I went from "awwww" when hearing about how Carl was trying to help, to "ohhh my God" by the end of the video 😂😂 Carl took that dream to a WHOLE 'NOTHER LEVEL,I really don't think that's what that lady meant 🤦🏿♀️😩😳😳
Great video, love the podcasts too @MrBallen
Necrophilia
You’d think he’d get another dream where the lady would appear and say, “Cut it out, weirdo. That’s not what I meant.”
The dream of Carl was obviously a story he made up retrospectively (either consciously or unconsciously) to justify what he was doing.
I dont know man... life is crazy, most people do lie ect , but stuff does exist...
I believe he was telling the truth about the dream. Or maybe the dream came after he actually met her but it made him think he had the dream his whole life. Either way he "believed" it was his God given duty to save her.

Yep, Autopsy w/ Dr Michael Baden, late 1980’s-early 1990’s, HBO. It may b archived or on streaming service.
@@anitaevans5361 He's become nothing more than a celeb ME who'll tell you what you want to hear if the price is right. Kind of a sad character.
😂 wtf
@@ShiftyShifts that's what I thought. Such Desperation.

Also (for me), the way the books and teachers portrayed historical figures took away their humanity and made it hard for me to identify with them.
