  • Feeling overwhelmed by a giant mess or junk pile? Got stuff everywhere you need to organise and clean? ADHD makes it hard to focus, be productive and keep the house clean and clutter free. Executive functioning challenges mean we can have whole spare rooms or lounge areas full of mess that feels so huge, we don’t know where to start. This can cause problems in relationships, cause feelings of shame and even lead to social isolation.
Watch this video to learn why we have giant messes in our home, how to get rid of them and how to avoid making more mess. Get practical tips you can use right away!

Thanks, the doorway hit home for me. I'm really starting to see ADHD traits in myself.

„More of a fire hazard“ really hit hard. Not only have I been diagnosed with ADHD, I am also a volunteer firefighter. The amount of flammable materials (clothes, papers, cardboard boxes, more clothes, oh hey, I was looking for that the other day, wtf, what is that and where the hell did this come from etc.) stacked three feet high in places would qualify my apartment as a hoarder’s home when looked at through the eyes of a first responder. If I think about having to enter my place the way I would enter a burning apartment, I get serious case of „Hell naw, this is going to be SUCH a royal pain in the neck“. In such places, it is SO easy to trip and fall and trigger an avalanche of junk that might even bury you. Luckily there is no actual trash, food residue or other biological materials in those doom piles of mine and therefore it thankfully lacks the unique smell you have in many hoarder’s homes. But there is so much dust…
Strangely, if I am presented with a system that is well organized and where everything is labeled and has a place where it lives (just like you have on a fire engine), I can work extremely well in that system. It’s just that I don’t have a real system of my own that I can live in. This also has to do with some degree of self respect, the ability to focus (or lack thereof) and squirrel brain. Working on that, though. I am fighting my doom piles one 15 minute interval at a time. And I keep finding things that I thought I had lost and purchased new again. So yay, bonus spares, I guess…..

It's great you can look at it with that unique perspective! I have worked with a couple of clinical level hoarders in the past where the home was far from fire safe, which is why I mentioned it. 15 minute intervals are great, and yay for bonus spares! Thank you for watching, and for the incredible work I'm sure you do as a firefighter and volunteer.

Thank you so much for making this video! I grew up with my mom taking care of everything for me. Into adulthood, I had such a hard time completing tasks and staying organized. I laughed at so many things in this video because THIS IS ME!! I thought it was cool how several of those ideas, I had to learn and teach myself to do things that way, like breaking big tasks up into smaller ones, using music to keep me on task, and staying in one area until it’s done (well, mostly done). 😆 One of my favorite tricks is to look at a counter or table or desk and say, I’m going to put 5 things where they belong, and then just do that. Then do 5 more. Or not, just do what I can. I’ve realized I’m not good at making decisions because they’re so final sometimes. I’m learning from videos like this, so thank you again for all your tips!! 🙂

I wanted to declutter my closet three weeks ago. Guess who's had a giant pile of clothes on the floor for the past 2 weeks and 6,5 days 😬

I used to do that with my pantry :( Hopefully if you make it into smaller piles, it will be easier to tackle!

Great question!!! Possibly it does, if you have a tendency to then get distracted cooking or taking snacks to the lounge!
