My son is an international model, and has also worked in Japan, Korea, and China. He said that most of the girl's were from Russia & Ukraine and they were young & barely spoke any English. All the models, both male & female, would share a tiny, cramped apartment, and if you didn't get booked for enough jobs, they would send you home! They would also charge them all rent each month. If you didn't work enough, they would bill them, so not only would these girls get sent home, they didn't return with any money!

I am polish and also was send to Japan when I was 17 because of the “baby face” I met mostly Eastern European girls in Asia. I advice young girls to be careful, as many men are taking advantage of them but I think that’s universal.

Could you tell us how much money you made? And would you do it again if you were 17?

    • @weronikas1307
      @weronikas1307 4 года назад +474

Max Mustermann . The agency pays ahead for the flight and apartment and then after some time we had to pay back from what we have earned, overall the money isn’t too bad if you get enough jobs. Yes, I would definitely do it again, I was very glad to have been send to Japan and Korea, as I have been interested in the culture before and it was a very special experience . However I would have been more cautious of the exploitation and also looked after my health more. The biggest problem though is that many times agencies lie about the real age of models, so that underage girls can attend adult parties etc. Yes indeed, there are some great universities but I wanted to take this opportunity before attending one.

this is sad. the reason why Chinese agencies hire Siberian girls is because they are the only European-looking girls that will agree to work for such a low salary. I bet people do not see many differences between a pretty Russian girl and a pretty German girl. Cheap labor - this is what they are looking for in Siberia.

There's a interesting documentary of russian girls living in more isolated poorer places with not many job opportunities or proper education opportunities, so often times they also decide joining agencies and going to a casting with the support of their parents and participate in contests where the winners get to fly to china as well and they also mentioned many girls fail to really make a living out of themself there and end up in debts and even doing escort service to be able to make it through. I think this documentary is sort of not really talking about that, but it's a real thing and it should definitely be highlighted on.

They even intervened in getting her copies of her paid work for her portfolio. Ended up in debt after three months. She left with no money from the contract and they did not ask for the difference. It was hard getting a true and accurate ledger of her earnings and work. The records they kept were very haphazard and did not match my daughters daytime which had all her castings and work by date listed in it. Me too, i used to be a model when I was young but I quit. The reason why I quit is because there were many dumb girls. I’m Japanese and I live in Tokyo, and whenever I go to auditions they make us write a profile on a piece of paper and so many girls around me asking how to write kanji, which means Japanese character, those kanjis that girls were asking each other were really an easy kanji that I’ve learned in primary school. It’s like Americans asking others how to spell an easy English spelling. So I thought I can’t continue working with those dummy girls.

For anyone who doesn't know the industry, just blabbing and assuming the Chinese are the wrongful party:
Remember, it is the Russian agency that the girls belong to. And it is the Russian agency who slaves the girls. If they treat the girls like subjects, and do not demand more of the Chinese fashion hosts, there is no reason for Chinese hosts to offer to pay more.
As a model, my benefits are protected through my agency. If the agency scams me, it is simply absurd to cry for help to whoever host the fashion show. It is the Russian agencies fault that they did not start from the girls' benefit.
I feel like that some people just like to trash and say it is the Chinese's industry that is the problem. But the truth is that most models who start out were not that glamorous as you would imagine. It is the same for us in Europe, as well as the ones in America. It is normal that you live in a small apartment and rush to every audition from dawn to dark. It is not just the Russian models in China.

To me, it's so interesting that everyone is freaking out about this, because the European agencies work the exact same way. You have to pay back your debt, which you made through travelling, building your portfolio etc., before you start earning money. This is just how it's done. This is actually a very accurate representation of modelling as I've experienced it. You live in a tiny flat with lots of girls, you run from casting to casting with all these beautiful girls, hardly ever get any work, and no one speaks your language. These girls at least have other Russian girls around them - in European cities you'll have girls of all different places (Ukrainian, Russian, Sudanian (is that how you spell it?), Polish, Dutch) live together and it's very difficult to communicate with each other. Any way, it just surprises me that people are so shocked, because this is not just Russia/Shanghai, this is Europe, and probably America.

They were probably in situations very similar to the girls in this documentary, and to have someone who clearly doesn't need to work, just come in as the runway messiah, and be gifted everything on a silver platter, when they have to pour their blood, sweat, and tears into just for some scraps. It must feel like a punch to the stomach, and to that add the fact that they're all basically high school age girls under immense amounts of pressure... Gosh, life's so unfair.

The agencies abroad should also pay for the models' travels and accommodation. And these models should get their salary in full without any debt to their russian agency. That's the legit agency! But if you are milking your models empty for their hard earned money then their agency in russia is a human trafficker!

      - And you clearly don't know how a legitimate modeling agency works.. Do you think 'Ford Models Europe', or 'Chic Model Management' have their models paying for their own airfares, or having to pay back the cost of flights and accommodation via a loan? No, these agencies take a 10-30% cut of the models' fee that is paid by the fashion label that wants them on the catwalk/magazine. The model incurs no cost other than any extra food or alcohol (or room upgrade) he/she wants to/from/during the event. It is not unusual for a well known model to charge $10,000USD for an appearance at a fashion gig, with even the unknown models still being priced (by the agency) at $2,000-$5,000USD per event (not including the cost of transport and accommodation, which the fashion label pays, NOT the model or the agency)

I would be absolutely terrified to let my 15 yr old daughter leave home to model. Only starvation at home could possibly induce me to allow it. Not poverty, starvation.

I would *never* let any daughter (or son!) of mine do this. It just seems too risky. Most modelling careers end the moment the model hits their mid-20s or (at the latest) early 30s. Then they'll be unemployed and will have to find something else.

@@roove1537 its false and its just a common misconception. A model who are in a great shape can stay until 38,39 maybe. Look at angels of victoria secrets, most are in their 30 and they are still modeling. No surprising, they are gorgeous .Its not like you look like an old grandma at 30. Is still young. Do you really think that they send back models at age of 26 😂? Its too young

but you would let her get married and have babies, right? because going through child birth is peanuts compared to getting your picture taken by a bunch of foreigners. SMH

I'm American working in China for a chinese company. I can say in all honestly my salary is the same as it would be in the US. I am also college educated so that helps. The reason I work here instead of the US is many reasons but for one, cost of living is cheaper in China.

I’m so fortunate to live in the United States but I do remember women like this and young girls walking around and trying to rope people into this and my mom would always say “that’s just human trafficking stay away from those people” mommas always right! Like no such thing as being discovered in a Walmart etc 💀💀 I feel so bad for these poor girls!

I was discovered randomly but was kicked out fast immediately bc I didn’t meet their expectations that’s why they didn’t want to give me exposure but without exposure you are useless bc the agency wants you to brings them profit. Got nothing off it but a ruined self esteem :/
