This is more than a problem it is a crime. Even if these people became educated and rejected coke - what would they drink? I guess they could boil the river water but I don't know how that would work out.

One thing that needs to be stressed: this isn't just a problem of people drinking lots of soda because they like soda. This is a problem of people drinking soda because, for many, its all they have that's safe. This needs to be viewed as a water problem, not just a soda problem.
A lot of things can be blamed. Having traveled a bit in Mexico and currently traveling around here at the moment I think the main issue is the lack of education in rural areas and the fact that sugar is highly addictive. When you can choose between buying tasteless, boring water and a flavorful soda it's very easy to pick the last option, especially if you have to put in a bigger effort to find water since soda is so easily available. Edit: I just finished the video and the lady at 12:39 is a perfect example of the ignorance that is killing all these people. Also the fact that they drink soft drinks at the funeral of someone who died of diabetes is really sad to see. Edit: I love Mexico, I'm addressing a problem existing in the country, not a problem about the people or culture:) viva Mexico cabrones
@@MarkyTeriyakiShorts point taken; thanks for sharing your experiences. I think the bottom line is that there are multiple factors in play and any approach to address the problem has to include many strategies working together (education strategies, clean water access, and likely others).

One of the most basic and honest things I've ever heard was that a man working with Amish farmers in the field asked one of them if they wanted to try Coca-cola and the farmer was like No way, not because he was Amish, but he went on to pour some of it on the cement walk way and said look where I poured that coke out. Look at it in a couple hours, and a couple hours later the cement began to dissolve and eroded the surface a great deal to a point where it was rough to the touch. Then he asked why would you put that in your body, it literally melts stone. What does it do to your stomach. It doesnt have healing properties, if anything it has extreme toxicity and extremely high acidity
Believe it or not but our stomachs aren't actually made from cement. Coke has a pH of 2.5 (anything below a pH 7 is acidic, the lower the number, the stronger the acid), so it's pretty acidic. But the acid in your stomach has a pH of 1. So it's far more acidic than coke. The acid and sugar will damage your teeth if you're not careful and coke is terrible for you in plenty of other ways, but damaging your stomach by adding a weaker acid to what it is used to is not something you need to worry about. The acid is not the most damaging thing about it.
Technically, Coca-Cola was first marketed as a medicine in the U.S. It was a temperance drink and patent medicine, like an OTC or basically “snake oil”.
Yep. When I was a kid, my grandma always told me that we shouldn't have dark soda like coke and pepsi, only the lighter colored ones like Sprite and Sierra Mist because they were "healthier"

Coca Cola is heavily marketed in México, it's actually kind of interesting when you think about it. Mexicans are very family oriented people and coca cola has brand associations with closeness, sharing and togetherness among family and friends. I'm not saying it's good that Coca Cola is marketed so much there but that Mexican consumer habits and taste align exactly with how Coca Cola markets itself. EDIT: Thanks for all the likes ! 🙏 I'm aware the primary issue is lack of drinking water, if anyone has any ways of donating or maybe even sending packages of bottled water to these communities please let me know in the comments.
Coca-Cola targeted heavily indigenous poor areas because of their lack of accessibility to clean drinking water . Now it’s become pet of their culture with all the heavy marketing.

You have subscribed yourself to the Anti-Coke religion man... I have been in Mexico many times, in the first place the government requires all drink brands to imprint a black octagonal kind of seal that clearly says "excess of sugar" in the bottle or can, in the second place you can buy the no-sugar, there are many other ways to drink drinks that have less or no sugar. To blame Coke for everything is a fanatical "religion". I do not subscribe to it.

@Ryder häh? what the heck, there is literally no difference between sprite or coce. The amount the suger and thats all what is interesting here is the same. only the posphate is less in sprite but that doesnt make a big difference. sprite and coce kill because of the suger thats all
@@tdh7865 muha ha ha again such a "nothing knower" (probably a bad translation of german to english).my friend.. And even if you drink 3 cans of it every day its still healthy. and even if it would not be even healthy, it would have had no relevance whatsoever in comparision to the effect of the extreme amount of sugar in sprite and cola. And that you talk about the addictiveness of coffeine, is the most absurd thing of all. The addictiveness of coffeine is in comparision to any other addictive stuff we know, nearly not existing. Even after 10 yeras of 3 cans of coffee. And even if it would be addictive, what is not the case in any relevant sense of the world ! it is great, because coffeine is eitherway healthy and so it makes you drink healthy drinks more often. (by the way sugar is also 100 times more addictive than coffeine xd) And even if it would be addictive (nearly not the case) and unhealthy (opposite is true), it wouldnt matter in the slightest in comparision to the effects of 11 g suger per 100 ml. to even think about the effects of 8 mg coffeine per 100ml cola as an argument for sprite is better than cola, is laughtable and stunning people today know NOTHING about what they consume their hole day, how is that possible to be so IGNORANT about soft drinks.

@@WapajeaWalksOnWater fresh water is not freely available to everyone. many counties struggle with unsafe tap water, and those in poverty can struggle to keep their water running at all. Even some major cities struggle to provide clean drinking water, forcing people to either turn to bottled water if they can take the cost or finding alternatives. soda is remarkably cheaper than water, to say nothing of how addicting sugar can be. nobody chooses to be impoverished, or chooses to have limited options as to what they can buy depending on how much money they have, or what is immediately available to them. They can only choose how they survive with what little they have, even then they don't have many options.
That may be the case, but it doesnt seem the issue. Coke also produces bottled water, and bottled water has the same logistics issues as getting all that Coke into those cities. This part of the culture. I live in the US and when I visit one of my aunts, the first things she offers me is a Coke, I instead ask her for water and EACH time she seems surpriced I prefer water. She has been living in the US for more than 40 year and says she find that offering water to be too little as if coke is a better option. When we sit to eat a meal, I am the only one drinking water, I want to model the right behavior. Yes, she is diabetic.
Yes. And she has full access to clean water. The issue is soda is addictive. I remember drinking it all day as a child - I haven’t had it in ages till never drink it again
It's so sad, I'm from San Cristóbal and the video manage to explain the situation here with precision. I know many people who are diabetics but they simply don't care about their health and continue drinking Coca-Cola. Then they wonder why "all of a sudden" they're in the hospital.
Here on Brazil is the same thing. I remember one of my sister's birthday party with more than 25 people, my cousin was judged a lot for drinking water instead of coke. When I traveled to Rio to see some relatives, this time I was the one judged. They offered me soda on each and every meal I declined. It was a shock to them. They asked my a lot of questions regarding it and continue offering me anyway.
Growing up with Mexican parents soda was something that was always in my household I grew up only drinking coke sprite etc I would drink up to 3-4 cans a day and would never ever drink water imagine how bad that was for me being a kid.. up until I had my son at 20 I promised myself I would stop the addiction for him to show him a better life and here I am today 4 years (my sons age) without having a drink of soda and my body finally feels good I don’t get any back pain or headaches anymore I only drink water now but I did it for him bc I can’t be a hypocrite not wanting him to drink sodas and me showing him different. This is really interesting, the government actually recognizes our problem with sugar drinks and high sodium snacks like Doritos and Lay's. Mexico's government actually tried a "strategy" of putting "sellos" (those little black hexagons you can see in the products shown) that have "excess sugar" "excess calories" "excess sodium" etc. written in them to try and slow down the sells of these products or motivate the industry into looking for healthier recipes. And we have yet to investigate if it's really working. But the big problem here is that in communities where access to education, food security and even fresh water are never fulfilled you can not ask a 35 y.o artisan man who can't read, let alone understand the concepts of sodium, sugar and calories, to look into better options, he will go for what he knows and what he can afford and thats the biggest difficulty in tackling a lot, if not most, of México's biggest and most dangerous problems:( I think our government should turn its focus to these gigantic companies and hold them accountable for what they're doing, but they're too powerful and rich to ever have consequences to their actions.

Politics and corruption. This problem will never be solved by governments. It will only be solved from the grass roots up. Secularly evangelize the word of a healthy diet, mostly whole plants, and work to ensure plenty of clean water is available. We know how to eliminate diabetes. Let’s do it.
I had a patient come in the hospital with high blood sugar. When we asked him if he had anything to drink today, he said just a 2 liter soda, but it was diet. I used to work in restaurants and Americans drink diet soda like water. I don’t think they understand that diet soda still causes insulin resistance and diabetes.
yep, i had to kick diet energy drinks too, especially when i found out i was drinking splenda. artificial sweetener and sugar might as well be the same thing, but the the splenda is way worse.
i used to have a teacher who is apparently from USA for native english speaker needs at my school. When i visit her house i saw several big bottle of coca cola or zero diet coca cola in her fridge and its outside. I was a teenager back at that time in 2000s and it makes me wonder of how US people cant living without coca cola.
Coming from Mexico, I heard so many people mention how coca cola has so many healing properties when in reality people have just become addicted to Coca Cola on a daily basis since childhood. An example of this beliefs is when eating foods high in fats or cooked with lots of oil such as a mexican dish called "mole", they say that Coke helps digest the food in a more smoother way. This type of traditions or beliefs create really bad eating habits that sadly are already engraved in many Mexican families.
Fat don't make you fat, curbs, starch and sugar does, the worse fats which are toxic are seed oils vegetables oil, people fry there foods in, its trans-fat and hydrogenated
Well it’s basically soda so it does make you feel lighter. That doesn’t mean it isn’t harmful though, and then it’s not like ppl only consume it after eating mole
So let me get this straight… the son’s blood sugar level was 273 which absolutely shocked me as someone who has lived with people managing diabetes….but his mother’s blood sugar level was 336!? Good Lord and she’s just chillin like nothing

And could eat anything without ever gaining an ounce on their washboard stomach. But there was hunger, and insecurity about where to live, how to make money, and where to find love.

Thanks for sharing this.

The coca 🌿 is what's doing it 😆...pretty sure Mexican version is more coca then u.s. by small%
The dog with the Coke bottle took me out 😂😂😂😂😂
Every time I visit family in Mexico they make sure there’s Coke on the table, it’s such a problem they started putting warning labels on chips and drinks, like on cigarettes
I also went to visit family after multiple houses and 3 days later I couldn’t drink more coke. My stomach was turning. 🤢
This is what I hate about visiting Mexico, it’s easier to get coke than fresh water. You know the place is fucked when you can drink coke for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
I love how my mom and grandma simply said stuff like fastfood, coke and snacks give you cancer to scared me from eating them when I was younger. As kids you might dislike it but as adults you'll appreciate it
And it’s the truth! Smart women!
This is trueee! Because sugar activates cancer cells and free radicals, these things eat on sugary sweet things. In order to prevent it- just have balance intake of sugar per day :)
Smart choice ♡
@@sunshinekim3810 i know. My point is that my mom and grandma always said things give you cancer if they wanted me to avoid them. They told me nail polish gives cancer, too 😀

Granny was right all along!
Also crazy to think that alcohol is like literal poison to us, yet it's still socially acceptable to drink.
Like cigs vs Marijuana
Yep. And some people rather smoke and drink than get a vaccine that is widely recommended by the medical community, too. The logic of some people…
Yes! And the prb with drinking is that whenever u go out with friends as a non drinker they see u as an alien and try to force it on you.
Such a sick mentality
@@Lbyt21 exactly! I mean it's not like Big Pharma is interested in profits at all
And in Mexico even children can buy alcohol! I bought a bottle of tequila there when I was 12! Crazy
My buddy who operates a forklift..stated you can feel the forklift work harder when lifting a pallet of regular coke then when lifting a pallet of diet coke. SUGAR
My mom is an indigenous Tzotzil, she born near the regions that appear in the documentary, I been there, and us as family are always shocked by the excessive consumption of this beverage, it’s sad seeing people dying, due to the lack of information and misconceptions around this kind of topic.
I would be great if you put Spanish subtitles, so more people could understand this great work.
Thank you, from Mexico.
Just turn on the closed captions in Spanish.
It was good to hear Tzotzil being spoken in this video. I traveled through the area in the 70s and loved listening to the indigenous languages.
Jaja
@@HAL-zw1vy y no faltaba el mexicano imbecil que venía a reírse . Bravo! Por eso el país está jodido, por gente como tú 😉
They wont read basic common sense. They never gonna watch this video, at all
Everyone is dehydrated from lack of water. Soda IS NOT a substitute.
Diabetic idiots not thinking about themselves.
And they only use the water for coke so wth.
I was a grocery store clerk who helped with carts/trolleys 🛒 soda made me sick in the heat, it’s drains you
@@sneedmando186 ive worked with my hands also and soda has never crossed my mind as my choice for working in the 100° sun its powerade at most but always has triple the amount in water
It is for them , and I say that because as a kid growing up in such community it’s in every little corner store together with chips there is no fruit and all other Drinks sold are as bad because they are made by Coca Cola as well or came a same sugar shit
@jizzle dizzle doesn't matter. Do you know how many grams are in US coca cola 20 ounce? Over 35 grams of sugar. literally a quarter of the bottle is sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
Stop drinking soda daily, asap
I'm from Oaxaca, a state next to Chiapas and we have the same problem here. My dad lost his best friend so young because of Coca Cola. His kidneys just didn't work anymore and died at his 20's. My family and I avoid soda, we don't like it and we know how dangerous is for us. This is a problem and poor communities are the most vulnerable. (Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico). So sad.
if they are poor they shouldn't have the money to buy it
@@manuelcosta2789 mexicans will always find a way. a lot of people’s mentality is “i may not have enough money to buy proper food, but i will always have money to pay for cable t.v.” and it’s the same with coke. i personally know people who can’t afford good, healthy food because of poverty, but they *always* have enough money for a 2.5 litres coke.
Biani, you and your family are smart to not drink Cola so much. What is awful to me is the lack of clean drinking water. Even the poorest areas should have access to clean water and education about how to properly handle sewage waste. For water to be as expensive or more than soda is crazy to me…
@@manuelcosta2789 The problem is that its ridiculously cheap, even for soda. In my village (Central Tlacolula sector) our freshwater isn't fit for human consumption because a Canadian mining corporation polluted the water to shit, our local river is still blackened because of it, which is why we only get to use it for cleaning or other things, we have companies coming here and selling us drinking water because its the only source we have. And that's what the Oaxaca government considers a "prosperous" Municipality, there are some places like Juchatengo and Sola de Vega where the water is literally shit and they're so isolated the only regular drinks on hand most of the time is Coke. Also most of these companies have drained the freshwater supplies from the few towns that have them and sell them at a ridiculous mark-up as water bottles.
My husband is from oaxaca his dad used to drink every day lived to be 99 but he was. A poor coffe bean farmer so he worked.it off
Thank you for your work and commitment.
That poor elderly man, drinking coke to heal from diabetes. He’s being robbed and deceived!! 😔
@@SunnySingh-pq8rm not funny
@@treydafinneser2318 sorry I am going to delete
Right, the poor elderly man thinks his been healed, where do you get this stuff? there's water all over Mexico, that not every tiny town water stores also, even alkaline water, Mexico is 15 place for death from Covid, the U.S. is number 1, a lot more process garbage in the U.S. and higher rates of diabetes then in Mexico
Goodness! 😔
In 189os they marketed cigarettes for asthma. In 1950s Dr. were advertising Camel cigarettes for big Pharma. Nothing they put before us is to benefit us. The elect race continues to trust the elite race because people believe their people must have the same skin as them.
It's not just the Coke. It's the sweet bread, tres leche cakes and the other high fructose snacks.
Exactly!!! Mexican's and Asian' countries likes to eat bread's and drink Soda's they like sweet's,and cheap's.
Education and self control should be taught NOT like the U.S. but sadly no one cares. Even if you do care large corporations have their way to your heart...attack.
Agree. Basically its about the amount of carbohydrates especially monohydrates form that input to our body compare to energy output.
Diabetes.
They know its bad but they still drink it
I’m always amazed when I visit family in Mexico. They drink any kind of soda for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They’re pretty affluent too; by no means are they poor or uneducated.
The water quality is bad.
They do it here in the States as well…
@@ratherbfishing455 only from the sink idiot here in Mexico the middle classes drink coca for some status bullshit if you go to a house they often buy a big bottle of coca just for courtesy even if they dont drink it often
Sugar is addictive, I remember visiting a friend at her house and she gave me a can of coke. Her baby who was barely learning to walk was sitting nearby, I opened the can, took a sip and placed it on the side table. As soon as the baby saw that he got up and raced towards the can of coke and grabbed it lmao! I had to pry it from his tiny hands and he screamed as if he was being murdered.
@@MT-rr1og What? For some status? I'm a Mexican and I have never seen or thought of it like that xD
Growing up poor in Michoacan, Mexico,
Even with limited resources, the one thing that never missed was the Coca Cola.
Every summer we would travel to Mexico when I was young. To an isolated/secluded town with dirt roads and out houses. The essentials would come in trucks like gas, fresh meats, gallon water and of course the brand new coke trucks.
Yep. Latterly go to my hometown 7 hours it takes to get ther and then go to another town that is 2 hours away from my hometown that’s small and still see coke.
