The Mini cooper is basically a mini cooper body on a BMW X3 chassis and drive train. Both the Mini and the Hi Lux are all wheel drive/4wdall wheel drive, yep the mini is turbo diesel, Dakar is run every year around the first week in January and goes for 2 weeks or so. In Dakar there are, cars, trucks, motor bikes, side by sides, quads, buggy's, prototypes, SUV's and home built buggy's. Thanks Ian. Seeya Rob

It was way better when they actually ran from Paris to Dakar. I used to stay glued to the TV screen during the rally for those two odd weeks of insane racing. Cars of all kinds, bikes and trucks all raced through Europe and Africa. The vehicles were built to tackle any kind of terrain. The distances of each stage varied from short distance special stages and up to 800-900 km per day. In 1990 the event had a total distance of 11,391 km, including 7,864 km of competitive stages. Now that was a rally!

Totally agree. Since then it became too remote and organizationally suffered from incompetence and doubtful change s of rules. And also they do pretty bad job for press,so there's so little information getting out, that people just don't bother watching 2 minutes (only available) of their favourite class a day...

The car you saw ("Batmobile") is a Mini JCW Buggy, a prototipe made by Xraid, a company specialized on racing vehicles and rally trucks. It was created at first as a prototype buggy by Nasser Al-Attiyah and bought by Xraid to develope from scratch a buggy for Mini, making it kinda the "next gen" of the original Mini (BMW X3 based) also seen on the video. In the main class for cars there's a lot of manufacturers and private teams that build their own vehicles for this races, this is why you see so many different shapes and sounds (those Hilux are music for the ears). This Andalucia Rally is part of the World Rally Raid Championship (also called Cross Country Rally). There's a lot of great footage of the Dakar Rally and is as crazy as awesome, the longest, dangerous, hardest, most grueling but beautyfull event on the calendar. It's so risky that riders and drivers know they have to stop and aid other competitors if needed. It brings competitiveness but also brotherhood to so many (yeah, I kinda love Dakar Rally). It started in 1978 in Africa, in 2009 it moved to South America and since 2020 the event has been held on Saudi Arabia. Here I found a compilation this channel made from fan videos (except chopper's cams), maybe it can give you context of what Dakar Rally is, would love to see your reaction to it. It was originally the "Paris-Dakar Rally" but because of military unrest in various parts of Africa, it was moved to South America and just called the "Dakar Rally". It's pronounced Dack (as in tack) - Kar (as in car). The Mini is the Mini Cooper Estate, all wheel drive. Not sure where it's run these days, as I dropped off watching a little while ago. They also run motorbike and truck classes as well.
Highly recommend watching the truck classes, as these monsters perform just like the cars. As stated earlier, you should watch Aussies answer to the Dakar, the Finke Rally in outback Australia. Keep up the good work Ian...

Iirc Rally, and Rally Dakar, have pretty different standards. Whilst rally still kinda tries and stick to "Make it close to an existing model for sale, but reinforce it and make it safe for the drivers to go crazy"; Rally Dakar is more of an endurance, plus technical event, in which I feel the manufacturers are allowed to show off what they can create. Hence, why they're so much... Beefier and off-roading looking versus normally rally, and you see so many RedBull liveries. They also got different rules and the stages work different than rally. A huge difference that I've noticed, is that in many occasions, they got more open setting stages. In which instead of going through winding roads, they go out on like dunes, open fields, tundras, etc. I'd take a look into it later on to give a better definition, but these are the rough differences between each. Oh, and Dakar allows those huge trucks that you saw in other video, along with dirt bikes. It's brutal man.
Btw, yeah you're right. This takes place in Spain. I highly suggest checking out the Red Bull Kamaz videos to check out more of those trucks.
Also a sad fact: It is speculated that the origin of that trash tendency of Squatted trucks, came from those Baja style trucks that you can see here, in which the nose is higher than the back. In here it's used to respond better to the constant jumps and dips they have to deal with. In the Squatted ones, is to let everyone know you married your cousin.

some of my favorite rally car stuff is watching their pre season testing runs where they know every inch of the road because they've been testing on it for weeks to nail down all the aspects of a new car and they cant be distracted by also learning a "track"... and the way the drive those cars through those roads, because they're so confident, is just next level... for example
    ruclips.net/video/LLRRduTO3XE/видео.html
notice how the "pre load" the steering for landings and such...its just amazing skill. the speeds... I dint he ever lifts off the throttle and yes every inch of that road.
just type " rally testing" and you'll have a nice evening of pure controlled madness,

The original British mini used to thrash all the competition in rallies, back in the day, but because the minis kept winning and things were stacked against the other car manufacturers, the organisers created a new rule about the minimum wheelbase: the new rule excluded all minis from competing and thus the rally championships became more ‘interesting’ for viewers and manufactures (except for Austin, the mini manufacturers).

There are also few more unusual cars based on rather unique brands like Optimus or Century. There are also some cars build based on american trucs like F150.

Hey there, loving all your racing content reactions. Dakar compares best to your Baja1000 event, since it's inception many different classes have been dominant/most entertaining just like Baja has many different participating classes. I love the jacked up Beetles :)
    Some tidbits and background:
Dakar used to be a "you can't break it if you tried" stamp of approval on anything crossing the finish line. In the 80s and 90s, it was dominated by manufacturers making road going vehicles do the impossible. In case you like that sort of story, have a look at the story of the GT-R engine (rb26) powered Nissan Patrol, which won over every other class multiple times.
After rally becoming as famous as it did, manufacturers applied their wallets&engineers to build these prototypes (the low, squatting vehicles comparable to baja trucks), where there were basically no regulations except driver safety. 30 inches of travel and huge tires but somewhat hampered by reliability if your engine relies too much on power adders such as forced induction or sheer size, which makes oil circulation and cooling more difficult.
Arguably the most dramatic/insane class of racing of the competition sadly wasn't in the video. In short: the *actual* trucks are insane. No, I don't mean the Hilux, which is cool and has the nicest engine note in the competition with it's high revving, low displacement V8 from the Lexus LC500. These are actual 8 Ton trucks with pretty impressive ground clearance, modified to run over any terrain at +60ish miles per hour. That's just completely bonkers. Imagine a combination of monster/trophy truck with the drivers sitting right over the front axle at a height of maybe 6-8 feet. Inspite of their vehicle's height, their center of gravity is so insanely low they can take immense speed into turns where you'd be convinced they'd flip over. Also, the 3 (!) Ppl in the cabin sit side by side like you would on some old bench seat.
Last bit: Porsche used to go rallying in the 80s with rwd set up 911s, which now dominate retro 2wd rally events since their powered wheels have a lot of weight on them bc of the 911's engine placement. Porsche built a twin turbo, air-cooled, AWD version for the Dakar rally which became the 959, arguably Porsche's first ever supercar. A supercar Bill Gates bought 2 of, so he could crash test one and make the other road legal in the US. It's comparable to a ferrari F40 with 20 inches of ground clearance, massive tires and a 500hp aircooled engine in the 80s, dude. Still blows my mind. Anyway, I mentioned in a previous video how much I'd like for you to react to the famous Nordschleife. It's a 13 mile track with enormous elevation changes, 170 turns and great scenery. Also, it's probably the most demanding track ever, and you can drive your daily on it for little money :) keep the car content coming greetings from Germany

the black car with Red Bull logos have some elements that reminds me of the old Renault "Megane" Buggy Schlesser, back when the "Dakar Rally" actually was from Paris to Dakar and not on some random track in a totally different continent.
but the Buggy Schlesser was made by Race Car Dynamics located in San Diego California, could be that this too have been made there.

These rallyes are pretty badass... I love anything offroad...
The Toyota Hilux was using the 350 supercharged V8 with all wheel drive, the Mini was an inline 6 cylinder turbo diesel all wheel drive... the stadium trucks, and I believe, the prototypes were all using the 350 supercharged engines with rear wheel drive...
The actual Dakar rallye consists of dirt bikes, quads, SxSs, buggies, cars, production trucks, stadium trucks, prototypes, and semi trucks...
The closest thing we have to Dakar rallye in America is the Baja 500 and the Baja 1000... we also have US rallyes here, but they are not as televised as the international rallyes, except for the Pikes Peak hill climb... Pikes Peak in something to behold, the car there are insane, ranging from formula one style cars to semi trucks... an amazing event for sure...
So, what makes rallye so awesome? Well, a great rallye driver once said, "a circuit track driver sees one turn 100 times, a rallye driver sees 100 turns ONE time"... that's what makes rallye so intense...

The current Dakar champ, Nasser Al-Attiyah's Toyota Hilux is manufactured in South Africa by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing. It's a beast! The Hilux DKR T1+ is powered by twin-turbopetrol 3,5-litre V6 unit which delivers 298 kW and 660 N.m of torque to the 4×4 system via a Sadev six-speed Sequential Shift gearbox supported by a front, centre and rear limited slip differential and a ceramic 215 mm twin-plate clutch. Fuel is fed through to the powertrain via a 540-litre FT. A lot of the Dakar vehicles is 2 wheel drive which has its benefits in certain terrains. The Dakar is restricted to 110 mph but these vehicles can easily cruise much faster. PS: there is also a distinct difference between Desert Racing (Dakar) specs and Rally racings specs (WRC)...you'll have to Google.

Check out some old Dakar Rally footage (back when it was actually called the Paris-Dakar rally), they were tearing across the Sahara. It was an awesome event when I was growing up. I kinda lost interest when the Dakar name became meaningless; the rally actually used to finish in Dakar.

The Toyotas were clearly identified and the Mini as well.
The misterious machine, no fenders, exposing her suspension, goes well beyond my limited knowledge.
And that section of the Rally was in Andaluzia, Spain. -- Portugal is not that arid.

If I'm not mistaken the engines have to be what the manufacturer makes on a production basis for the vehicle or version of the vehicle, so as far as I know the mini will have BMW parts as it's the same company, I think the Hilux has either a 4litre V6, or a 3.5 turbo diesel . .. they change depending on class and just if they wanna run a petrol or diesel engine. . . . Dakar is definitely a must watch each year, always good value!

The Andalucía Rally, which is in Spain, is part of the World Cross-Country Championship . That Hilux is made by a company in Belgium called Overdrive, and the Mini (BMW) is made by a company called X-Raid that is based in Germany. Overdrive and X-raid are the official manufacturer of those respective brands. Both cars have tubular space frame chassis, sequencial gearboxes and four wheel drive systems. The Toyota has a naturally aspirated 5.0 Toyota V8 and the Mini has a 3.0 straight six TurboDiesel engine from BMW, that weirder car is also a Mini but only two wheel drive. The only think in common that this cars have if the production model is the wind screen and the badges, the rest of the body is all made of kevlar, carbon fibre and fibre glass.
By the way, check out Baja Portalegre 500 and the 24 hours of Fronteira in Portugal (is a 24 hour race off road)! Greatest off road races in the world (after Rally Dakar ! 💪 🇵🇹
