We live about 20 miles south in Scripps Ranch, but I previously worked at Cal State San Marcos for 5+years and have seen the area evolve and grow for the better. It's a wonderful place to live, and is convenient to almost anything. The university has become both an educational and cultural hub for the north county, so I anticipate that more good things are in store for San Marcos going forward.

I've lived in San Marcos for 15 years now and I love it for the reasons outlined in this video. I wouldn't be able to afford the house I am living in if I had to buy it today at today's prices.

I was born and raised outside Detroit and due to some life events eventually ended up in San Marcos. From the obvious difference in the weather to the roads and how "nice" and new looking most of the buildings and homes were it was literally like a different country. The local San Diego news was also so much "different". In Detroit every night the local news is highlighted by shootings, robberies and other crime and obviously that doesn't happen nearly as often in San Diego. Plus the abundance of good Mexican food including a local 24 hour spot by where i lived was awesome. Also, it was cool being able to hop on the Sprinter to Oceanside side and then the Coaster to San Diego, Encinitas or wherever. Obviously being so close to the ocean was great as well.
That being said, its soooo much more expensive. I was a back of house leader at a restaurant and door dashed occasionally as well and even as a single guy with no kids money was tight. I spent most of my time living in a rented room that cost as much as a decent one bedroom apt around Detroit...gas was incredible expensive as well as pretty much everything else.
Overall id say its a great place to live IF you can afford it..
