This is the best mastering tutorial I've ever made for you guys, but I forgot to mention one thing in the video, always remember that the threshold on the first compressor is a good place to look if you're hearing too much or too little compression!
Anyway, I hope this helps!

I forgot to mention one thing in the video, always remember that the threshold on the first compressor is a good place to look if you're hearing too much or too little compression! I got lucky when I opened the preset!
I have to say I’m very impressed by this meter!
I tried some of the settings and was blown away at the volume it added to my track while keeping it out of the red. Really helped me improve my song!!! Thank again!
Being able to look over your shoulder & hear the explanation at the same time is ridiculously helpful! THANK YOU, LEWIN!
Lewin, I followed these steps (& the song sounds better!) BUT, in order to get the RMS between -10/
-11, I see a bit of clipping on my Master Volume Slider that’s set at unity. What might be the problem?
Great to hear someone who doesn’t smash his mixes to high heaven. I miss the days when commercial music actually used the dynamic range available from digital distribution media like CDs and downloads
Thanks so much Lewin, you're a star! So clearly demonstrated, as always.
Thanks so much dude, this helped me a lot I had a couple of parts that were higher than everything and I was like ok Ill just do some automation and at that time you said just go back to the mix and fix any parts that need to be fixed, thanks for this tutorial and for your time.
Thanks I always come back to this video to make sure and do everything correct, blessings!
Thank you, very helpful. Nice chorus, too.
Many thanks! I've some cooking vids on my channel and looking to use gband for voiceovers. This will help.
Awesome information! Thanks for sharing :)
Excellent, so helpful Lewin, thank you!
Allan Gildea you are very welcome!! Thanks for watching!
Incredibly helpful.
Thank you for your help. Much appreciated. Cheers!
In MVMETER2, you only adjust the left knob, which automatically controls the right channel due to the chain icon being on. This allows the relative volumes to remain in sync. However, is there any benefit to toggling the chain icon OFF and manually adjusting the right channel independently in order to best match them independently as best as possible to the -1.5db and -10db during each step? We wonder if this merely puts them in more of a mono mode, or actually evens out the sound better for stereo...or maybe even worse. Not sure!
Good catch and good question. For me I'd say that it's better to go back into your mix and find out where the imbalance is. Rather than trying to fix it with this.
However of you were trying to even out an uneven stereo recording this would be a good tool for that.
Thanks soooo much, such a helpful video!
This is dxpe. Real informative
Hi Lewin, Is it preferable to Master within the project or to export it to a separate project just for the mastering stage? I've always exported and mastered separately but is there any advantage to doing so? Awesome video btw. Really useful.
Go to the channel page and just search “Mastering” you should find a video that I made about that topic. Thanks for watching!
Hi Lewin! Thank you, so useful! I am just wondering how did you calibrate the vu meter. I can see it is already set to -18dbFS but you pull it down a bit more? How can you tell how much shall be this reduction? Any special formula?
Super cool my dear friend..
Hi Why do you take a small chunk at the 200 range? You mention this is something you always do. Thanks so much, another great video
Good question, because in most cases that area is causing a lot of muddiness in a mix. It's not "always", but often for sure!
Hi Lewin, I found this helpful and informative but I have a question about a strange issue that came up. My final mix sounds good on my monitors, but once exported to iTunes it was insanely loud, and on earbuds a distorted mess. (This has never happened to me before.) I've been lowering the volume on the Master Track to try to deal with this, but I was wondering if you know why this might have happened, and what solutions there might be.
hey!! a bit off subject, but, i have a guitar solo i want to have very wide! but, i can't figure out how to do that! HELP!! i so appreciate your videos, they've taught me a lot about Garageband! thank you!
is RMS the same as DB? im wondering if the youlean meter is a better/equivalent plugin nowadays since this is from 2018?
Thanks for all the info!
How would this work if you were to export the mix and master it in a new project?
Would you use this preset differently if you were mastering multiple songs for an EP or full album? Or is this preset just for mastering a Single?
GREAT QUESTION!! You can use it for either an full album or a single!
Hi Lewin! You have a couple other useful videos about the issue of getting the proper signal strength in GB and I'm wondering about the possibility of using this meter not just for mastering but also for reference when tracking? Would this meter's "Peak Standard" preset be useful in that regard?
Great video, however I have one question. At what level should the master volume (upper right corner) be set when exporting. It seems I could go through all these steps but my export could still be too low, too loud, or distorted if the master volume is not set correctly. This seems to be a key step missing from an otherwise awesome video. Am I missing something? Thanks.
Great stuff! Im curious why you start your EQ with a preset knowing in advance that you're going to change it. Are you saving the changes? Downloading now!
Good question! Because it already had the Q set to a narrow path in a few spots, it just makes it a little easier.
I downloaded mvmeter2 from the site, but it's not showing in my plugins dropdown...
Restart your computer and it will be there!
I did everything you showed in this Video and it is great, but the Song is way to quiet, what do i do ?
So I Used your link to download the mvMeter2. And the install was successful. However, I can't seem to locate it in the garage band plugins list. Could I be missing a step? Waiting for your reply.
Restart you computer
Thanks! That did the trick. Sometimes I just wake up stupid. LOL!
so when you're using the MV meter, does this still mean that you cannot let the garageband master meter go into the red even if everything is fine in the MV meters?
Question? I find that I’d like to try a compressor plugin outside of GarageBand to install, do you recommend any? Thank you for his info by the way. This is the first outside component I have installed and it was a cinch!! Very helpful meter!!!
Adrian Just get the Slate Digital everything bundle. It is extremely affordable and opens up a ton of possibilities inside of GarageBand.
GaragebandandBeyond Great info. Any free ones you know of? I just checked out the bundle on sale and on my budget I’ll be waiting a while to be able to get this, like till summer. Not that it’s expensive just not doable.
Thank you so much! I have a question: after following your presets (with tweaks of course), the final master volume goes into red - is this okay for exporting?
Yes that is fine. You might want to check out the 2018 and version of this video. On my channel page search for "Mastering 2018", it should pop up.
hey man, i put a PRESET on my master track from the menu where they have different ones to pick from and I want to return the Master track to NO preset just like when I first opened it. but I cant undo because I have made to many UNDO moves to go back that far. Is there a way it can be reset? thanks.
You just have to go in and individually change them to "No Plugin" Then they will all go away. Just like you would any other plugin in any other channel.
At that point you can SAVE that empty Mastering channel as a preset so you can go back to it whenever you want.
so I downloaded the MVMeter - twice - and I still can't find it. I've got the manual. the library plugin folders that the installer says they'll be installed in are empty. I've sent and email to TB ProAudio, but thought I'd check here to see if anyone has any ideas.
Restart your computer and it will be there
@@GaragebandandBeyond Duh.... Ive forgotten that before.
Love the tutorial, and your song btw. I have tried to install the plugin and it doesn't show up. I have watched several youtubes on how to install plugins and I have followed the instructions to a tee but when they get to clicking on the i icon beside the master/track buttons it's not there. I have audio tools turned on in preferences as well. Any ideas??
Eric Rose Have you restarted your computer since installing the plug-in? That should fix it if you haven’t.
@@GaragebandandBeyond I had tried restarting, that didn't work, then I deleted some files that should have forced GB to rescan the plugins, that didn't work either. So in frustration I turned the machine off and let both of us cool down lol. Once I started it up again it was there! As you can tell I'm a total newbie with GB. I used Calkwalk on a PC for years. Love your videos!
@@GaragebandandBeyond Oh and one more thing, thanks for the quick reply!
@@GaragebandandBeyond That's weird my initial reply didn't appear. Oh well. That's defines my day so far lol. Once I turned the machine off and back on again, after we both cooled down lol, it appeared. Thanks once again for the help!
Eric Rose oh good I’m glad you got it working!
I have that “clean my Mac” program and do recommend it for keeping things tidy on the system side of things. You might check it out.
Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Sweet. Question: I lost a couple of mixes on my mac. Is there a way to recover those?
Only if you have a backup drive.
How to install mvMeter2 into GarageBand !!! Thanks
Is the installer that comes with it, then restart your computer and it will then appear in your plug-ins list.
Where's the link
In the more info area of the video
Should the gain plug-in be at the top of the list..?
No! Follow the order just as you see it.
@@GaragebandandBeyond ok thanks!
I notice you have seven slots for plugins on your master and I only have five. Is there a way to add to the number of plugins? I'm running GB10.3.2
YES! If you put the cursor in BETWEEN the plugins, or on top or below the row, you will see a small white line appear, click on it and you will be able to open more plugins!
Great! Thanks! @@GaragebandandBeyond
@@GaragebandandBeyond It’s the small things… Answered my question too, thanks!
I installed it, but I'm unable to find it in my plug-in's list. Is there some way to pull it in there or something?
CelesteDafeu Did you restart your computer after you installed it?
@@GaragebandandBeyond No I didn't I restarted Garageband. Thanks for the heads up!!!
I have the same problem at first! Let me know if that works for you!
@@GaragebandandBeyond Thanks sooooooo much. It totally worked. I love your channel. I'm in the midst of trying to master Garageband before upgrading to logic...again....smh
