    Thanks again Colin! Another amazingly straight forward video that builds on previous lessons :D This has been really helpful as the most confounding and discouraging aspect of recording sound for me was the volume being too low outside of whatever device or program I was recording with. Having even the most basic understanding of compression has made such a difference!!

    I was not aware of these; super helpful. This helps me to understand the whole concept of loudness as it is standardized across the media. I encountered digital distortion in the past, and was frustrated - now I know why!

    Thank you, thank you, thank you, Colin! I had no notion of the three essential volumes other than the use of MV Meter on my master track during mixing. Now, I can dial in my sound even more effectively, and the short lesson on using a limiter is gold to me also. I have never quite grasped how to use one until tonight. Thanks again, man, notes are taken, valuable lessons learned from this video that I can put into practice this weekend! Cheers!

    Hey Colin, your channel has been a huge help in my recording adventures!
    I have two questions: when using the RMS meter, should you use it and adjust the limiter accordingly in the project you’re mixing before exporting, or should you use it after you’ve exported the song and brought it into a new project for mastering? I’ve noticed that when I use the RMS meter and bring the level up to about -12db while in the original project, the mix always seems louder after I export/import the stereo file to master, and the master meter in the upper right corner definetly goes into the red when the stereo file is played.
    My second question: should the master track meter that’s used while mixing and upper right hand meter be going into the red at all? They always do even after setting levels appropriately when using the VU, Peak, and RMS meters. Thanks for any help!

    Great info cheers... but curious why you use the GB Limiter plugin Gain to boost the Master output at the end, however you use the inbuilt TBPro VU meter gain dial to boost/reduce other tracks you've tweaked previously. What's the difference please? When and why do you use one over the other. Thanks again for great GB info vids - cheers, Mark

    Great video! My question is this: When you do the RMS standard part, is it during the mastering stage or still mixing?

    • @TheBandGuide
      @TheBandGuide  2 года назад +3

      Great question! Checking RMS in mastering is pretty standard! In the way I'm showing it here it's kind of post-mixing, pre-mastering. Basically just bringing up the volume of my mix to take it to listen on other speakers to see how it's sounding compared to other tracks on other systems.

    Seems lika a good advice. What version fo you use? I got an M1 Mac and the non GPU version crached. Also, I don't get how the input level are set. Created a new project, removed all plugins and eq-setings on my instrumet track and master track. Had my external soundcard gain set to 0 but the levels on garageband was going red. I then lowered channel fader -5db and i set the output gain on the ampmodeler to -5db. Its confusing - what are the level meters on the channel showing? Input or output?

    Hey Colin. Good tips on use of the mvMeter2. One area that I seek clarification is the volume boost of the master in RMS standard for external listening. You have used a limiter plug in to raise the volume which I have not tried at this point before. I use the -/+ button at the bottom of the Meter. Does it do the same thing or not?

    • @TheBandGuide

    Great video with a concise presentation of the important references for a well-recorded and mixed tune. I am curious as to the relevance/importance/outcome of increasing or decreasing the gain control on the mvMeter2 itself. Does this only affect the meter output readings or is there an outcome on the actual track being monitored for recording in the VU standard mode? I ask because I tweaked it and don't really understand its affect. Thanks for posting!

    • @TheBandGuide
      @TheBandGuide  2 года назад +1

      Great question, Cliff! The gain control on the mvmeter2 allows you to adjust the volume of the track before the meter reading. It is actually adjust the volume of the track itself which can be super helpful to gain stage- if necessary. I've done a video on gain staging if you haven't seen it already!

    • @TheBandGuide
      @TheBandGuide  2 года назад

  • @scottbullard3479
    @scottbullard3479 2 года назад

    • @TheBandGuide
      @TheBandGuide  2 года назад +1

      They are technically looking at slightly different things! LUFS in Youlean are factoring in how loud sound is perceived based on the frequency response where as RMS is purely volume. Both are commonly used in mastering and sometimes RMS can work better/be easier to read depending on the track!

      Great question! You're exactly right- there isn't a "right" order. A good starting point is EQ into compression, but it all depends on the source. Think through it conceptually before you start and then don't be afraid to move stuff around.
      One steadfast rule for me is that I always place my guitar amp designer as if it were the real world- so there is no EQ or compression BEFORE the amp because I want it to be like I am running my guitar directly into the amp. Do you ever process your MIDI as almost like an amp recording and then bounce it so you ha e a sound wave that's as if recorded from a mic? I've been trying to do this so it's uncompressed, no EQ but has some reverb, echo, saturation etc etc. Then once I bounce this I can see the new wave form in garageband and have more of an idea of what compression is required. I havent yet got to the point I can hear what's needed.
