Having even the most basic understanding of compression has made such a difference!!
I was not aware of these; super helpful. This helps me to understand the whole concept of loudness as it is standardized across the media. I encountered digital distortion in the past, and was frustrated - now I know why!
Very useful. I already knew about the recording level and the -6 dB peak target for the static mix but learned to use the gain in the limiter on the master track for the -9 to -12 dB RMS at the end.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Colin! I had no notion of the three essential volumes other than the use of MV Meter on my master track during mixing. Now, I can dial in my sound even more effectively, and the short lesson on using a limiter is gold to me also. I have never quite grasped how to use one until tonight. Thanks again, man, notes are taken, valuable lessons learned from this video that I can put into practice this weekend! Cheers!
Gosh Colin. You are such a blessing to me. I do know of this Mvmeter and its settings, but watching this video made me realise my error done when I had mixed and mastered my recent song! I had failed to set the Mvmeter to RMS Standard on the Master track. However, the song sounds nice, but I have gone into the project and redoing it. I trust this teaching of yours will stick to my heart when doing new songs. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.Thank you.😀
Hey Colin, your channel has been a huge help in my recording adventures! I have two questions: when using the RMS meter, should you use it and adjust the limiter accordingly in the project you’re mixing before exporting, or should you use it after you’ve exported the song and brought it into a new project for mastering? I’ve noticed that when I use the RMS meter and bring the level up to about -12db while in the original project, the mix always seems louder after I export/import the stereo file to master, and the master meter in the upper right corner definetly goes into the red when the stereo file is played. My second question: should the master track meter that’s used while mixing and upper right hand meter be going into the red at all? They always do even after setting levels appropriately when using the VU, Peak, and RMS meters. Thanks for any help!
@@TheBandGuide i‘m very new to garageband and a lousy guitarplayer, but it‘s very interesting. I just downloaded the checklist from the description, some day that will come in handy i hope. But after watching your videos i already discovered a lot. Until now imostly used garageband to learn guitar without annoying my neighbours. I‘ll try some black metall’ish stuff as my first goal. Can you explain in a video how to export a finished song so it can be listened over the phone or stereo like with itunes or so? In case you haven‘t done a video about that already
Great info cheers... but curious why you use the GB Limiter plugin Gain to boost the Master output at the end, however you use the inbuilt TBPro VU meter gain dial to boost/reduce other tracks you've tweaked previously. What's the difference please? When and why do you use one over the other. Thanks again for great GB info vids - cheers, Mark
Great question! Checking RMS in mastering is pretty standard! In the way I'm showing it here it's kind of post-mixing, pre-mastering. Basically just bringing up the volume of my mix to take it to listen on other speakers to see how it's sounding compared to other tracks on other systems.
Seems lika a good advice. What version fo you use? I got an M1 Mac and the non GPU version crached. Also, I don't get how the input level are set. Created a new project, removed all plugins and eq-setings on my instrumet track and master track. Had my external soundcard gain set to 0 but the levels on garageband was going red. I then lowered channel fader -5db and i set the output gain on the ampmodeler to -5db. Its confusing - what are the level meters on the channel showing? Input or output?
I’m diving into this as a rookie engineer. I used to have people help me mix my music. I have to pause and rewind a lot and I am taking notes and downloading the walkthrough. I am currently working on my next single and feel like I should redo it now that I have the my meter plug in. Any other plug ins you suggest right off the bat? I am sure you have a video on acoustic songs but if you could tell me which one would be best for me to start at as a rookie I would appreciate it. Thank you!

Hi Thank you so much for this info!! 🙏 I have a question, I downloaded the mvMeter2 but my meter only had factory preset “init” manual. How can I get the peak standard preset or RMS Standard? Edit: I just found it through the left and right arrows! Thank you for all the info! 🌟
Hey Colin. Good tips on use of the mvMeter2. One area that I seek clarification is the volume boost of the master in RMS standard for external listening. You have used a limiter plug in to raise the volume which I have not tried at this point before. I use the -/+ button at the bottom of the Meter. Does it do the same thing or not?
for my download options for my Mac, it gives me two options GPU (OpenGL/Metal GFX card required) and no GPU (GUI rendered by CPU). Which one do I choose?
Great video with a concise presentation of the important references for a well-recorded and mixed tune. I am curious as to the relevance/importance/outcome of increasing or decreasing the gain control on the mvMeter2 itself. Does this only affect the meter output readings or is there an outcome on the actual track being monitored for recording in the VU standard mode? I ask because I tweaked it and don't really understand its affect. Thanks for posting!
Great question, Cliff! The gain control on the mvmeter2 allows you to adjust the volume of the track before the meter reading. It is actually adjust the volume of the track itself which can be super helpful to gain stage- if necessary. I've done a video on gain staging if you haven't seen it already!
@@TheBandGuide Thanks for your reply, Colin. I'm just starting another recording project and jumped right into using mvmeter2 from the very beginning. Really helpful.
