    Big difference in battery min-max temps, 35C-50C. Cells that are on the edge are cooling better, cells that are sandwiched in the middle does not get any cool air, need to transfer heat to adjacent cells first.

  • @LittleSpot
    @LittleSpot Месяц назад +9

    the battery must be around 100 to 200kg. Air-cooling such a big block of mass... hm... is much more useless, than water cooling (also between the cells). Valdemar did a great job, good work of you booth for developing and testing 👍

    Lessons from late 90s cpu over clocking and cooling coming to mind

  • @thenerd6192
    @thenerd6192 Месяц назад +5

    A CPU has thermal paste, but still uses air to cool the heatsink unless you have a water cooled system. The issues with the Soul seem to be that 1. the pack design doesn’t have good airflow to all cells so you get the big delta, and 2. if the battery fan is on 9 but the HVAC fan is on medium then it will suck in air from the cabin which is warmer. If you could fully seal the connection from HVAC to battery inlet and adjust the emergency box to use the same fan speed as the HVAC outlet you might improve this (and then it might be worth using AC as you’d get closer to 5 degrees at the inlet), but still wouldn’t fix the cell layout/airflow

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  Месяц назад +1

      The heatsink has big surface area which makes cooling better.

    • @thenerd6192
      @thenerd6192 Месяц назад

      @@bjornnyland True; my message was already an essay otherwise I’d had mentioned that. Fitting that amount of surface area into a battery pack that has to fit under a car is hard. I wonder if you could fit a bunch of low-profile CPU coolers in the pack, and whether it’d make a difference.

    This was a good test. It might still be worth having another go to learn more, and you what your learning now.. how about
    • locating and targeting the hottest battery cells
    • venting the air outside when it leaves the battery - might also help with quieter running
    • trying with the Aircon on
    • checking the battery for degradation, even though it's new
    • adding a correction for the CdA air resistance change with the lower outside temperature on the run.
    You could, for instance correct all runs to assume they were at 22°C.

    You should definitely have tried at least one charging session with
    A/C running, just to see what would happen - increased loss from charging vs possible increased cooling.

    The Chinese company making the adapters has recently lowered their 1000 unit price to below £400; however none of the European distributors has lowered their price.
    I have spoken to the people making the CATL battery replacement kits for the Leaf, and sadly, they have no plans for a Soul kit right now; I am hoping that, by the time my battery starts degrading, they will have something on offer (holding steady at 96.8% SOH and 26.1 KWh useable).

    • @sie4431
      @sie4431 Месяц назад +1

      There's not going to be many buyers while the battery is still in good condition so I imagine they'll have a solution when there's enough people who need a replacement. The good news is that those batteries are either going to be cheaper or higher capacity

    • @ianemery2925
      @ianemery2925 Месяц назад

      @@sie4431 I think a lot of people would be interested in a higher capacity battery; mine still reaches or exceeds the original claimed 92 mile range, but that range isnt great and can be frustrating to deal with in the UK, where there are areas with few reliable CHAdeMo charger locations.
      I NEVER rely on a single charger location, due to the risk it is broken or occupied by someone charging to 100% (which has happened); but there are only 2 locations with 2+ chargers between my home and the M4 corridor, 70+ miles away; and both were inaccessible due to road closures, the last time I needed to get to London.
      I had to go 30 miles off route, barely making it to a charger with single digit battery left (detours around the closed roads added 70 miles to the trip overall).

  • @FHB71
    @FHB71 Месяц назад +1

    Exactly, HPC at supermarkets make perfect sense!!! In the beginning there were supermarkets here with 11kW chargers while also having parking time restrictions for the lot. When you go shopping you load a one digit number of kWh. It was just marketing.

    The more tests I'm watching the more i understand that charging faster or driving way faster is not giving a good amount of faster travalling. Even weightreduction like in the i3 is not really doin a big difference (i.m.O.).
    By watching the test, I thought there would be a way bigger time gap to the unmodified run. Maybe the two runs are not 100% compatible but I really thought it would turn out like 30 mins faster or so...really interesting.

    • @supergeek02468
      @supergeek02468 Месяц назад

      The math is whether you can charge faster than you can drive. At 120kph that Soul was using about 30kw of constant power, but only charging at 45-60kw of average speeds. Still faster to drive fast charge fast, but not by much.
      With newer EVs with average charge speeds in the 100-150kw the math really shifts. You’re charging at 5-10x your driving speed, so higher speeds and more charging really shifts your average speed higher. Especially if you’re on unrestricted autobahn or something doing really ludicrous speeds.

    If the battery cooling exhaust is into the trunk, probably taking the floor out of the trunk would help a bit. The Ioniq has the exhaust outside the car, which is a better solution.

  • @SuperEgleh
    @SuperEgleh Месяц назад +1

    wasn't the cooling problem with the kias mainly related to the uneven heat extraction from the modules? increasing the capacity somewhat shouldnt really be expected to help much with that problem, also indicated in the video yesterday where the max temp of the battery did not go down as quickly as the min. liquid cooling and proper metal heat pipes in packs showed up for a reason...

    Battery overheat? I'll note in my "ev trouble" list

    • @swecreations
      @swecreations Месяц назад +9

      Well yes, batteries and their charging speed is often limited by how fast you can cool it down. When you're trying to charge a battery in under 20 minutes you need to have a good cooling system or it will overheat and charging will take longer, so more like 30 minutes.
      The Soul is a 10-year-old car model with an air-cooled battery and therefore this isn't exactly surprising.
      It really isn't much trouble if that happens though, the battery will simply charge slightly slower so that the temperature is maintained at good levels. If you watch the video you'll see that it never got much above 50°C, which isn't exactly hot.
