i wish 22kW AC was normal, much cheaper to install than DCFC and if you install 10-15 of them at a supermarket, you're going to be there for a while, i'd be happy with this
I don't think that it's useful at a supermarket. Don't know about your visits but I'm usually out within a half hour, quite often in 15 minutes. That would give me some 10kWh at best. Hardly worth connecting.
22kW (and even 50kW DCFC) are in the weird void where I can't find a useful case for - it's uselessly fast for overnight charging and too slow for every other occasion. Maybe something like visiting a cinema, where one stays 2-3hours but that's a bit too niche to reliably charge a car.
But 22 kW onboard charger are not cheap.
Very true. Tesla with 22kW charger here. At malls I always charge AC....cheaper and I don't have to interrupt shopping to move the car because charging is completed. But the future has to be bidirectional DC only. No point for the car to carry charging equipment and cables.

The 22 kW is really nice here in France. Many little villages have 22 kW chargers, which are good to have as a backup when nothing faster is nearby. Unfortuntely my Id3 doesn't have it :(

@@triplextriplexxx8225 It only takes 11kW AC though, that's the issue. Plugging it into a 22kW AC charger will only deliver 11kW to the iD3.

Finally there is an ID3 real competitor! It's a really smart car. Not a sedan, not an SUV, but good looking and enough roomy without being enormous.

Megane E-Tech at 100% SOC on display will happily continue charging for 15 more minutes and receive additional 3.5 kWh! The 100% SOC display is a bit misleading. And you observed that Nissan Ariya at 100% SOC also kept charging for many minutes.
The Megane definitely gets my EVDesign 2022 award
It looks surprisingly good for a Renault indeed.
I’m pretty convinced that the charging brakes are for the BMS to recalibrate the SOC during the charging process in order to prevent overcharging or stopping the charge before it’s actually 100%.
I think the big 22kW charger could have so much worse efficiency at lower power levels that they've decided to make it so that when the battery is starting to get full and a normal charger would lower its power output to a lower constant level, the charger instead drops all power from time to time instead, to avoid operating in the region of bad efficiency.
There are many other possibities too, though, like a temperature sensor in the type 2 connector and the connector being worn out or dirty and heating up too much.
I do love some 22kW AC charging!

These faulty press cars likely, experienced every driver changing all the settings and going into menus no one would ever look at, turning things off and changing the core settings. Maybe complete a factory reset when you pick up the car, might reduce some of the bugs.
I have only the small screen without google, but from the four cars I have driven so far (Kona, Enyaq, Corsa) the Megane has the best Androids Auto. It starts wireless immediatelly and maps works as if it would be integrated.
How is your experience so far without Google? Did u wish for a google play?

14,8 kWh/100km (or a bit less due to correction) is not in line "Ioniq go home" ;-) My average consuption for whole 2 years is 13,3 in Finland with trips at -20°C

Thank you for the review, Bjørn. I'm so glad you referred to the HK sound system. Car reviewers rarely focus any time on the audio. I ordered the Mégane Launch model because of the HK sound system. Sadly, in the UK we get a very reduced spec for the top model, but it's still a fantastic car and my car was built yesterday so I'm very excited now. Keep up the great work.
If you want premium sound always go for aftermarket solutions. Factory made HK’s not worth for extra money. Bewit Sound Products rocks. Check it out.

I am really happy with my Zoe 22kW and its 22kWh charging. Unfortunately the public chargers are usually 11 or lower here in The Netherlands. Not sure why. With 22kWh chargers I would be able to go for 500km-ish trips from time to time but not with the 7-11 kW ones I usually see in The Netherlands and Belgium
kWh is the battery, kW is the charger. kWh is capacity, like liters, kW is power, like horsepower.

I've already experienced this kind of cut-off several times with my Model 3 during a charge at 11 kW. Problem of unstable voltage on the terminal which made peaks of more than 240V. No problem on other stalls.
You can see here voltage dropping below 380V when cutting off. Should be the reason. 3 phases current must be between 380V and 415V.
But the voltage you see on the screen is DC battery voltage, not AC voltage before on-board charger.
@@bjornnyland On my Model S the grid voltage gets displayed when AC charging. When DC charging 'grid' voltage = batt voltage.
3phase current would be Amps, you mean tension (volts).
22kw should at least be an option. Especially for fleets.
Wish every car has 22kw option, here in Italy almost every AC charging point is 22kw. Not having the charger at home with my ZOE is very usefull to be able to charge to that speed.

looking at 3 different cars at the moment, this, the MG4 and the Citroen e-C4. this is top of the list for me. MG4 misses even basic things like rear interior lights and vents for the kids, and citroen seems so slow. This seems to tick most boxes.
Sadly the biggest screen isn't available in the UK weirdly.
Thank you for your test. I‘m a little bit irritated about your result. Last week I did a 180km trip and back with my E-Tech under similar conditions:
4°C-12°C, Comfort mode, temperature set to 21°C. Most on german autobahn speed set to 120km/h sometimes 130km/h .
Consumption for the 360km was 18,5kWh/100km.
Have you planned your trip with the car navigation including charging stops? Because the E-Tech will then automatically prepare the battery for charging. The result is a much higher consumption….(?)

@@bjornnyland Strange….yesterday I drove from my hometown to Stuttgart and back: 217km, bad topology, 3-9degrees, car went down from 100-29%, so again average consumption of 18kWh/100km. In german Megane-forum members are telling similar experiences.

Back in the day, when subs were only available via aftermarket 3rd party audio gear install, the sub was always in the trunk (or rear hatch). Still is the case today for the most part.
When charging with 22 kW charger the voltage was just above 380 V instead of nominal 400V in three phase system. When charging power went down in the video the supply voltage dropped below 380. So there might be somekind undervoltage protection in onboard charger which cuts charging in 380 volts.
The voltage displayed was DC battery voltage.
Why the sudden lost of charge?

Range is a bit disappointing for me. At motorway speeds around 125km/h I have less than 300km. Since I often have 350km days this doesn’t quite do. I stay with my idea I need a car that offers at least 600km WLTP.
Very competitive price in the UK. The top spec launch model is £40,995 vs £48,490 of the Tesla Model 3 SR. Certainly merits a test drive 🤔
Compared to SR it is cool but towing capacity weird 500kg limit...

In the UK we don't get the full size info screen, (such a shame, its all squashed into such a small area, makes it unreadable) this combined with the front wheel drive, the lack of zip in anything other than sport mode, too many fricking stalks on / around the steering wheel (what's with that?) and the lack of Vehicle to load, made me pass on the Renault Megane E-Tech. It does however look a stunning design in the flesh.

Driven the Zoe at workplace and i abosultely hate these stalks. Especially volume, and its way to mute just could be a dealbreaker to buy that car for me - maybe that would be acceptable 20-30 years ago

So maybe it actually has heat pump!
car scanner doesn't report the wrong state of charge, the car doesn't show the real state of charge in the dash.
For example, in my Zoe, Car Scanner and ABRP show the same state of charge. If I got 13% in car scanner, the SoC on the dash would be 10%. If my car shows 98% SoC, Car Scanner and ABRP both show 95% state of charge.
Renault seems to do some trickery with the state of charge to keep it more linear for the user.

Question though: i just startded using car scanner like you do on the Megane. But it struck me that in some cars it is possible to see individual cell voltages (like the Toyota BZQWERTY4X 😉), and battery temperature, etc.
I was disappointed not to be able to show that on the megane. Am I missing something?
Now it shows SOH, battery temperature, cell voltages (in All Sensors).
This is weird. Efficiency seemed better than an e-Niro at lower speeds, but much worse than an e-Niro at motorway speed.
@d t I think you can get much higher consumption with EVERY EV at an average speed of 46km/h…. that says nothing about efficiency. I can drive constantly 50km/h on a flat highway with my Megane and consumption is clearly below 10kWh/100km

What car scanner did you use?
A bit late coming in here- does the Megane have the "Always on" 12v function that Zoe has by pressing the start button with foot off the brake? stops the screen and ancillaries going to sleep while stopped at a charger.
Honestly, if you were stopped for a bite to eat and hit the washroom, stretch your legs, do a few emails and texts then 1 hour would get you 20-ish kilowatt hours. Good for a top up charge but not for a bulk charge

Hello, in Romania, Renault Megane E-tech 40 kwh is sold with 7.4 kwh AC charging, without the possibility of ordering a fast DC charging. It seems to me that this 40 kwh model will not be sold, it is used for advertising with a low starting price

Normally electric cars are not able to heat or cool during AC charging. I this case the car AC/DC converter (charger) stops charging for a few moments in order to put some heat in the cabin. It is not a common behavior.

Not correct.
Almost all EV have options to run ac/heating/cooling during AC charging.
I regulary program my Ioniq electric to be warm in the cold mornings- it Must be connected to AC charger to be able to preheat cabin.
La Mégane E-Tech is the only European electric car that interests me.
I like to know the miles per kWh, would I be right in saying that Bjorn covered 338km and used 60kWh's in this challenge. If so, that would mean 225 miles and 3.75 miles per kWh. Would that be right?
Multiply the wh/km by 1.6 then divide 1000 by that number to give you the mi/kWh
From corrected mph and mi/kWh of this test run, I made it:
48mph_ 17°C_ 5.9mi/kWh
56mph_ 21°C_ 5.5mi/kWh

Thx :) this app is amazing for the kw value in charge , the missing value on the app could be the temp of the battery ( for see if conditioning of the battery before rapid charging is working ) and the famous % percentage of life remaining like we could have on a iphone batt or other, thx

I have been driving Megane E-tech now 8200 km and I like it a lot. Precise steering and suspension, Google is awsome and efficiency ok. 22 kw ac very useful for us. The worst thing with Megane is the trunk opening button on the tailgate, and yes, it sounds ridiculous to say so, but it really sucks. And winter has not started, it may become even worse with all the ice and snow all over the button.
The auto steer issues are very telling that Nissan really doesn’t want to share tech with Renault and why they are revisiting their deal. If i remember Bjorn said pro pilot in the Ariya was very good
I'd take couple more reviews before I make that assumption. I've driven 2020 and up cars from VW, Renault, BMW, Toyota, Audi, Nissan and Tesla - adaptive cruise control and lane assist has been the best for Tesla and Renault. I also tried Renault Megane ETech for an hour and had no problems in engaging asisst.
My experience of course is anecdotal but with it I encourage to look at more reviews before coming to conclusion.
@@MartinzW I know its a big sticking point in The Nissan Renault negotiations. Nissan DOES NOT want tech sharing because Renault is trying to get a partnership with Geely and will be freely sharing it’s tech findings with them. Their agreement already seems loose because Pro-Pilot is a pretty rock solid driving system that doesn’t try to favor one line or the other (my experience is with new and older Nissans with pro-pilot 2017-2023 models) seeing it hug that outside turn lane so hard is easily fixable with software but that is still pretty worrying, especially if you are using it where it wouldn’t be safe to be close to the outside lane such as back roads. At least in the US some of the mountain roads don’t have any railing and are very close to cliffs/ drops that lead to rivers

What is the situation in your countries?
In Poland I ordered a Megane in June and I’m still waiting for the car to be manufactured. I got a call from the dealership in October telling me I will receive the car faster if I agree to modify my order to 7,4 kW OBC. Naturally, I declined, 22 kW can save your ass sometimes! It seems Renault has a pretty big backlog with existing orders, that’s why new 22 kW OBC orders are frozen.

Why is the towing capacity so baaad...
I think Bjorn is making the classic mistake of believing the figures shown on the dash.
In my ICE car, the indicated fuel consumption is at least 5% optimistic compared to calculated (actual) fuel consumption.
The correct way to calculate consumption is to note the kms travelled divided by the actual kw then used when charging up afterward, to the same state of charge as when the test begán.
Manufacturer instrument consumption readings are fantasies, like WLTP and NEDC claims.
I think for easier testing, running from 80% to 20% using the OBD to determine the charge might be useful, as this gives useful range with a buffer at the bottom end, in case the charger you planned for is kaput.
DONT BELIEVE MAMUFACTURER'S CLAIMS, because that's all they are. Claims.
Seems like a generally good car, but rear end style has been ahead of practicality. The boot depth will make lifting anything moderately heavy out a back breaker.
2 things I'd like to see on all modern cars.
A completely flat floor when back seats are dropped and a sliding rear seat. Especially important on smaller cars
Nope. You made the classic mistake of looking at manufacturer spec only. In real world, there are heat losses.
@@bjornnyland Hi, Bjorn, maybe I am misunderstanding you, but in your tests, you seem to refer to consumption, using the consumption displayed on the instrument panel.
In my ICE car, these are incorrect, being optimistic by at least 5%.
So i calculate my consumption by comparing the amount of fuel used (from a calibrated diesel pump in the service station) to the distance traveled using that amount of fuel. Which gives the true consumption.
To properly give a consumption figure, you should divide the kms travelled by the amount required to restore the battery to the charge level it was at before the test started.
So if you start at 80%, refill the battery to 80% after the test, and consumption is kms travelled divided by total kws used to recharge back to 80%.
This will include the charging losses which occur and which a driver will have to pay for.
When you drive, the car only shows the actual on the road consumption, and if my car is anything to go by, the indicated fuel consumption is NOT the same as the CALCULATED fuel consumption.
Having said all that, i enjoy your tests, and your enthusiasm. What the tests do do, is give a good comparison, in actual on the road conditions, of consumption between different cars, even if the figures can't be totally trusted if you are only relying on the instrument readings, which are most likely massaged by the manufacturers to make their car look good.
As i say, my cars instrument readings are at least 5% optimistic. To give the instruments a better chance of coming closer to the real world calculated consumption over a decent period of time, I once didn't zero the fuel consumption gauge for 6 months and 10,000kms.
It was still 5% optimistic after that length of time.
For single fuel tank fills, it was worse than that.
So, all I'm saying is don't believe the gauges in the car, and include all the energy put into the car from the charging station ( which I'm sure is calibrated, by law) and use that figure along with the GPS distance reading you use to calculate the true consumption.
