    Ever since Luca de Meo took over, Renault Group seems to have real direction and purpose, something they haven't had for a long time. Great to see.

    • @cannygrowabeard
      @cannygrowabeard 2 года назад +3

      Yeah, It might be PR BS but that tale that they showed De Meo this car in two styles, a basic one and a premium one (as this car looks today), he said, just make the premium styling the default. I’d imagine there was a similar bold direction at Cupra.

    • @DonDixit
      @DonDixit 2 года назад +4

      De Meo became Renault chief after the brand had become heavily impacted by Ghosn Gate. Luckily for him PSA's (now STLA) CEO Carlos Tavares gave him (and other makers such as a German competitor) a blueprint how to overcome a crisis i.e. a loss making operation. De Meo's Renovolution (ouch) Strategy really copies PSA's. And that's good.

      @@DonDixit I think Carlos Ghosn is the reason this car exists. He was talking and developing EVs as early as Tesla cars. Way before VW and PSA. This learning and experience is now visible here.

      @@poxer1 Yep Ghosn was integral to the quality of this generation with the early introduction of the Twizy, the Zoe and the Leaf providing tons of data and learning towards what we see today, which in the case of the Megane and the Ariya is really nice visually and it sounds like they're pretty trick too

    A wonderful review by a superb motoring journalist who has taken all the essence of a car, and distilled it into what makes it great! Well done.
    I've ordered a top-spec Uk Iconic (with that essential heat pump). It was a straight choice between the Renault and the Tesla Model 3 (forget the id3/MG4......no contest!
    The 'sterile', boring and poorly made Tesla is now looking so dated, and the tech is so 'yesterday'.
    And on the 0-60 time.......the claim of 7.5 seconds, is actually 6.9 (the same as a Mini Cooper S)......how typically French, downplaying it. Unlike the over-exaggerating Italians 😂 .
    A brilliant touch going to the experts for the tech, Google, constantly updated.......well done Renault!

    EV envy! You Europeans have soooo many to choose from now. I think this Megane is a real contender among the other brands in this price range and class. In some way, I like it better than the sister Ariya, but I'd have to actually see and drive them in person to draw a definitive conclusion. I do agree about the need to make EVs efficient, which is why I'm not yet sold on vehicles like the Hummer EV, the F-150 Lightning, the Rivian -despite their amazing features.

    Interesting review and not a bad looking car.
    It's really interesting and unusual that the efficiency and range in coldish conditions wasn't that far from the quoted WLTP range.
    I'm afraid WLTP is a pet hate of mine as to be honest unlike this car, most cars will never, ever, ever get anywhere near the quoted WLTP range.
    I think it's time manufacturers were more honest and transparent about their cars efficiency ratings but they are probably terrified of how bad it will make them look against cars like the Megane e-Tech. But, if all manufacturers did this they would all look bad so who cares but at least Jo public would have a better understanding of of what they were buying?

    • @jonathantaylor1998
      @jonathantaylor1998 2 года назад

      It certainly is frustrating...
      But, in fairness, it's absolutely no different for EVs as it is for ICE cars - you only 'notice' it more in an EV because of the range-remaining reading on the dash.
      For example, my wife's Yaris Hybrid 'officially' does over 80mpg...
      We've had it for 5 years now and THE best we've ever got out of it has been 60.7mpg...! 😳

    Have now seen 3 reviews of this, the big issue is not the efficiency, range or technical capabilities: it’s the back seating! All of the 3 reviewers have described the bad squab , flat seat, very minimal legroom. Why didn’t Renault reduce the load bay by a few litres to enhance the rear seat space, and Give more supportive seating ? It’s a deal breaker if you have relatives all above 6 foot!

Most batteries are the same and much fast charging will have a price after some years.

Really looks to be very competitive if you can live with the space limitations. The new Nissan/Renault EV platform bodes well for future models which I guess will include the next generation Leaf.

    Very interested in this car. But I fear it will be too expensive. £35,000 - that's bound to be the 40Kwh version. Let's be real, no-one spending that kind of money is remotely interested in that version. The range is just too small (186miles, but real world probably sub 130). ID3 and Cupra Born have bigger ranges for the money (although still falls short in my book). As does Kia E-Niro/Niro EV, as does Hyundia Kona, as does MG ZS EV. The new Smart #1 looks to be a nice car too, similar price point too apparently and yes a bigger range. It's not got a huge boot, but its bigger than some in this price range. I really hope it's cheaper than I suspect, but I really think to get the 60Kwh with most of the toys you'll be £40,000+ and then you're in EV6 and Ionic 5 territory.

    I went out this weekend determined to buy an EV. No particular make in mind, 35k to spend. After 2 days and many dealerships, I gave up. They are either unobtainable until 2023, boring to look at (nearly all E SUVs look the same), too expensive or have some design flaw.
    This looks nice, but it will be too expensive and not available for ages.
    Stick with my diesel pickup another year.

      If you're looking for a non-SUV, but still practical EV - which, as far as I know can be had this year - then have you looked at the MG5 Estate?
      Great value for the range on offer, plus a 7 year warranty.
      Admittedly, looks a bit like a 1990s Passat Estate - not, in itself, an un-attractive car - but there's a more svelte facelifted one due out later in the year.

  • @RBcymru
    @RBcymru 2 года назад

    It all depends what speed you were doing and for how long as well as if the car was driven from cold and air con heating / cooling was on. An EV is efficient after the car has warmed up or cooled the interior as you notice the % of battery drop by 2 to 3% very quickly. No one in the UK has done a back to back test against the Cupra Born and Telsa model 3. A roads at 50 or 60, motorways at 70 and city driving at 30 for 100 miles on all three roads. Doing this in winter would be useful.
    This would give cost compared to value for money and REAL world range and efficiency with NO pre-heating the interior.

    A VW dealer told me that they have a 12 month wait on the id3 so the Megan could clean up. The MG4 and the GWM ora could be budget alternatives when they finally arrive. 2023 should bring a battery astra into the mix looking forward to non SUV's. Owning an SUV cured me of that affliction. An efficient hatchback is the sweet spot for me.

    I think the review makes very bold claims on efficiency based on very little. There have been a number of French reviews based on longer drives and longer time periods that haven’t been very impressive. Although these were also in winter.
    There needs to be far more testing before anyone can shout about how good the efficiency is, ‘near wltp in winter’ is very very unlikely!!

    Best thing of its type/size on the market just now it seems. And I swore blind back in 2003 I would never, ever buy another Renault..based on my experience with the UK dealer's response to a problem on my new Megane of the day, along with the advice of my local AA man who I came to know quite well - 5 times in 6 months.
    Given the years that have passed, along with Renault's vast improvement and the fact that Renault dealers seem to be very different in Ireland where I now live...I'd buy this (I never thought I'd say that) over any of the alternatives who have suddenly been left quite a bit behind. Amazing to think too that the informed opinion is that VW should look to Renault for how to build a quality interior on their ev's; they don't have to be 'flimsy and poor' - not my words but those of friends who have id3's. Things move on very quickly. EV's still too expensive though, no matter how good.
