The remaining adults who remained compliant with her actions are equally to blame. This young lady remained dignified and continued to maintain a smile, while waiting for “nothing “. If we as nation tolerate or condone such behavior, what are we teaching the next generation! As a young African American child growing up in the 60's and 70's in the State of Alabama, I can personally attest to almost daily acts of racism by the adults - teachers, principals and some parents. Thank God for family, church and community that believed in me and encouraged me and other African American children.

I was an Asian American girl growing up in the State of Florida in the States. What she experienced is 100% relatable. I was treated horribly by both staff and peers. Even worse, most of my bullies forgot or refused to remember what they did to me. My heart goes out to this little girl and I hope she gets the justice she needs.
If you were an Asian American girl growing up in the State of Florida then you cannot relate at all to something that happened in Ireland which was misreported. The medals were only participation medals. The little black girl AND another child won their competition. The official thought that because both children were due to get winners medals that they wouldn’t be getting the participation medals also. This was a mistake. The matter was rectified afterwards. The official wrote a letter of apology to the child’s family and resigned. As far as I’m aware the other child was white.

That's the part I find so upsetting, personally. All those other girls' parents should have been discussing what happened right after that, and letting it be known to anyone in charge that they all saw it and it is not ok. Since the girls were confused, I don't think they are being actively raised to be racist. But they are teaching them that it's okay to stand by and and say nothing when someone else is, especially if you're uncomfortable. Adults need to teach kids to advocate for others who are being mistreated by modeling that behavior themselves, whether it's racism or bullying. You make it unacceptable.

Not only should the official handing out the medals be sanctioned from all children's sporting events until she herself issues a public apology to the young girl and her family, punitive damages should be sought by the parents from the governing body for attempting to sweep this incident under the rug. I guarantee this public humiliation is not something that will be easily forgotten by this child as Gymnastics Ireland tries to cover up their complicity. Photographers, judges and spectators need a slap in the face as well.
You're right. The damage is done for that little girl, but it doesn't have to define her. The value and meaning she attaches to this discrimination will determine how much. Some meanings could make her stronger/wiser, while others could ruin her life. She probably needs to work with a counselor to ensure it's the former. And, of course, racism is here to stay. The idea that it can ever totally be defeated is a delusion. But it can be lessened. And the way to do that is to address it as it occurs.

"Tangled?" How could the medals become tangled when the judge deliberately stepped past the young girl and moved to the next child , issuing medals until she arrived at the last child? By this time, there should not have been any "tangled medals," and every child should have received one by that time. This innocent child was intentionally past over. In 2023, it is outrageous that incidents such as this continue to plague amateur and professional sporting events. The judges and committees allowing this should be fired from their posts.

This is so sad, but I had a similar thing happen to me in my high school back in Wilson, NC in the USA. Fike High School used to give birthday medals to kids who had birthdays in the summer. Everyone got a medal except me and I wasn’t given a medal because I was Indian. I participated in sports, but was not allowed to participate in pep rallies. I was also passed up for scholarships even though I had good grades. I am glad I don’t live in NC anymore.

Any adult who could intentionally hurt any child does not having any business judging, coaching, or teaching children. I was an Asian American girl growing up in the State of Florida in the States. What she experienced is 100% relatable. I was treated horribly by both staff and peers. Even worse, most of my bullies forgot or refused to remember what they did to me.

If you were an Asian American girl growing up in the State of Florida then you cannot relate at all to something that happened in Ireland which was misreported. The medals were only participation medals. The little black girl AND another child won their competition. The official thought that because both children were due to get winners medals that they wouldn’t be getting the participation medals also. This was a mistake. The matter was rectified afterwards. The official wrote a letter of apology to the child’s family and resigned. As far as I’m aware the other child was white.

Not only should the official handing out the medals be sanctioned from all children's sporting events until she herself issues a public apology to the young girl and her family, punitive damages should be sought by the parents from the governing body for attempting to sweep this incident under the rug. I guarantee this public humiliation is not something that will be easily forgotten by this child as Gymnastics Ireland tries to cover up their complicity. Photographers, judges and spectators need a slap in the face as well.

You're right. The damage is done for that little girl, but it doesn't have to define her. The value and meaning she attaches to this discrimination will determine how much. Some meanings could make her stronger/wiser, while others could ruin her life. She probably needs to work with a counselor to ensure it's the former. And, of course, racism is here to stay. The idea that it can ever totally be defeated is a delusion. But it can be lessened. And the way to do that is to address it as it occurs.
I just want to give this child the biggest hug. Her discipline is masterful beyond her youth 👏🏽

It was a deliberate act with no thought given to consequence. The organization is clearly void of diversity training, to say the least.
The way that little girl shrugged her shoulders and breathed deeply with a smile on her face brought tears to my eyes. She held her composure but I am pretty sure she balled her eyes out at home. "Tangled?" How could the medals become tangled when the judge deliberately stepped past the young girl and moved to the next child , issuing medals until she arrived at the last child? By this time, there should not have been any "tangled medals," and every child should have received one by that time. This innocent child was intentionally past over. In 2023, it is outrageous that incidents such as this continue to plague amateur and professional sporting events. The judges and committees allowing this should be fired from their posts.

The little girls around her had more sense than the adults. They looked confused and concerned. I'm in tears, I know how this feels first hand. It's a ball of pain that takes up residence in the pit of your stomach, for me, it never goes away. I pray the incident inspires this young lady instead of defining her.

Even though this happened a year ago and it’s just now coming to the surface I am absolutely appalled this little girl didn’t deserve to be treated like this. Looking at her beautiful smile as she waited patiently to get her medal when the judge passed over her she was still smiling and I know she probably said to herself when am I going to get my medal, this brought tears to my eyes. There’s no place for racism in this society and the judges needs to be ashamed of themselves.

This is so sad, but I had a similar thing happen to me in my high school back in Wilson, NC in the USA.
Fike High School used to give birthday medals to kids who had birthdays in the summer. Everyone got a medal except me and I wasn’t given a medal because I was Indian.
I participated in sports, but was not allowed to participate in pep rallies.
I was also passed up for scholarships even though I had good grades.
I am glad I don’t live in NC anymore.

There was absolutely no indication in the formal apology indicating that the guilty person was going to be dismissed nor that she was reprimanded.
