Hey all, originally this video was a much more in depth retrospective like my previous ones. However, I just didn’t like how the original script was coming out. So, I decided to focus on the decline of the series instead. Let me know if you liked this change to a mini retrospective, or if you would have preferred a more indepth one! I also want to give a shoutout to @icaro9554 for the brand new intro! You can check out his work at his Twitter: twitter.com/icarogabriel17
Something that I will always love about the GRID series is how the races felt more alive and unexpected. For instance the AI would sometimes crash out, have tire & engine blowouts, and even battle each other which made the races all the more thrilling. However it is quite a shame to see how over the years, each game could bring something new but fail to deliver the same experience as Race Driver: GRID. Great video Alex, love the outro too!
I literally had a driver blow his engine in front of me in grid legends. I was able to avoid it in a nick of time due to the smoke blocking my vision for a a few seconds. I also witnessed Seneca having two engine failures in a row in one championship with Yume tanaka and I was like why is their reliability so bad. I literally carried the team to the top not long ago
@@flameburstgt6503Wow, that sounds crazy. In my case, I see engine blowouts from Ravenwest sometimes which surprises me since they’re supposed to be the main threat lol
@@Stormviation i also remembered during one of the touring car heritage races that two GTRs made contact at Oktuma and spun at the same time, one to the left, one to the right. i managed to go through the gap and get 3rd place before chasing the leaders
Being someone who loves sim racing, but has neither the time to accurately learn tracks, nor the money to invest in a nice racing setup, GRID always hit the sweet spot of fun but "realistic" handling for me. Very sad to see it's gone!
I guess this is where the niche can be but it won't be enough for them to continue the franchise as it won't make money. I'm looking out for this sweet spot in a racing game and i'm glad i found your comment as this could be what i'm looking for. No matter how much money is invested in a sim racing setup, it will never be like irl driving because senses like g-forces can only be felt irl (Lewis Hamilton hates simulation training lol). With that, I thought it'd be better to lean on a more arcade side in games instead of pushing for realism.
And structure. It's crazy that the sequels didn't have the team management or endurance racing that made that first GRID game so unique. The first GRID for me felt like Speed Channel, Motors TV, or Eurosport: The Game. I....don't quite know what the sequels are supposed to be, but they do look more unfinished for me.
Yeah as someone who's not into serious sims or arcade racers I really enjoyed Race Driver Grid. I enjoyed the team management, livery customization with sponsors, it added RPG element. The game felt Cinematic, like you're roleplaying in "Days of Thunder" especially with the cockpit view. When I heard Grid 2 didn't have Cockpit view I lost interest and never went back to the series. Looking at Grid Legends they added those glow guides and boosters... that makes it too arcady for me than the more balanced feel of the original Grid.
Nothing is more satisfying than seeing your ai opponents crashing and making the same mistakes as you, it makes the gaming experience that much more immersive unlike most games that have perfect ai opponents.
The thing I think most people don't understand is that GRID wasn't just called GRID it was called Race Driver: GRID GRID: Autosport was not an out-of-the-blue rise in simulation handling for the game, it was basically trying to become ToCa 4.
GRID 1 is my favorite, but GRID 2 is a close second. I enjoy all of them except 2019, so the seemingly popular view that only GRID 1 is good is so polarizing to me.
couldn't agree more. but I actually much prefer Grid 2 than the original Grid, for 2 related reason: suicidal AI & damage modelling. both make me less interested to finish Grid career mode. and Grid 2 is still the only one in the series that I have completed the career mode 🎉.
@@markisaki979 not really, if you just play through the carreer mode you earn a lot, I only had to grind for stage upgrades which was a little annoying bc it's based on miles driven
@@MaxRamos8 The payouts for a race is at most one seventh of what you would earn in an equivalent race in GRID 2019. And most of the time, even if your car does meet the mileage requirements, you either still wouldn't be able to afford all the upgrades, or you'd be bled dry unless you've purchased a discount upgrade, which should have been unlocked with a driver level increase.
I think another problem GRID faced along with Dirt was Codemasters tendency to delist the games meaning players could not enjoy what might have been their preferred game and it took away appeal from fans who were on tighter budgets and couldn't afford 80$ games.
not that it helps the fact that having real life cars meaning it's basically doomed to delisting at some point, but still having such a short timeframe meaning piracy/emulation is the only way you could play these games same as Forza games before the last two Horizons, which I'm surprised H4 still sold on digital platforms considering the predecessors we're being delisted after 5 years
@@adlibbed2138 Truthfully, I think the only reason Horizon 4 is still being supported is because Horizon 5 simply hasn't taken off anywhere near as much as Microsoft hoped. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the game is being supported.
They could no longer capture the grid 1 scene because the main heads behind the development of the game left codemasters, after their departure they created the studio playground games, which has been under the development of forza horizon ever since. Also those people were under the development of the toca race driver series, colin mcrae dirt 1 and colin mcrae dirt 2, and also maybe that's the reason why the environment and scene of forza horizon 1 is very similar to the environment of dirt 2
I like grid, I like that the A.I crash here and there and the A.I can be aggressive causing them to also make mistakes. This game helped me get into racing games.
I'm glad someone finally brings this up, I felt like I was the only one who cared about this franchise. Frankly Codemasters frustrate me because it feels like they do not understand the genius behind their first entry. To this day, no matter how I try to force myself to play the sequels, I still end up having more fun on the original thanks to its immersive career and atmosphere and fantastic handling and physics model.
I know what you mean about the atmosphere. That menu music “Vintage Warmer” was so chill that sometimes I would leave the game on in the background even if I wasn’t playing and hearing it in the demo is a huge part of what got me to buy the game.
The major downfall that they made is not to put cockpit view in the sequel, the other mistake is they refuse to add Nordschleife track with reason and i quote "we better put several new track rather than add 1 long track" probable like that. That's 2 is a deal breaker for me and I think for a lot of people too. And shame that they're game also cannot be modded.
RaceDriver:Grid - Almost perfect game. I have some issues with it ("unicorns" in multiplayer, weird car behaviour in collisions, easy economy making team management unnecessary way too soon, lack of lower performing cars and somewhat weird behaviour after breaking traction of rear wheels). Definitely my favourite in the series, especially with mods adding cut/platform exclusive content. Regular drift cars on togue feels so great, it's weird it wasn't included in the base game. Grid 2 - All issues of first Grid remained while most of strengths were weakened/removed completely. Still had a lot of fun with it, especially online with friends but it was clean downgrade with a lot of issues. Upgrades were horrible and destroyed multuplayer ballance completely. Grid Autosport - I really like it, however it was a missed opportunity. Lack of innovation, boring presentation, handling model that lacked "personality" of one from the first game or depth of other simcades/sims on the market, released on old gen consoles with almost no marketing way too soon after launch of Grid 2. If it was given additional time in the oven, it might turned out great, as general idea behind it was (IMO) the right one. Grid [2019] - Dissapointment on all fronts. Peaky tire model, awful too stiff suspension, some cars were slower on straights than their IRL counterparts, werid selection of cars for certain classes, lackluster and unnececssary tuning/setup options, lack of content, style, dumbed down damage model etc. Grid Legends - I admit I was positively surprised by this one. It improved on all 2019's issues (except for suspension and tuning/upgrades) while not adding new ones. However dumbed down damage model, somewhat weird, twitchy behaviour of some cars, weird car choices (like why do you need 2 classes with both retro and current muscle cars instead of separating them etc.) If we ever get another Grid game, it should return to the roots of the series and be return to "RaceDriver" name. It should have a lot of effort put into delivering "show". More advanced damage model, a lot of smoke/sparks and debris, softer suspension making weight transfer more visible and "dance" around the suspension (like in original 3 Grid games/PGR series), exagerated slipstream to help in bunching cars together, smaller but more thought out car list on launch (Cars in the same class should be more related to each other and separated from different classes. If any DLC in the future adds new classes, it should provide at least 1 "free" car for said class to avoid splitting multiplayer playerbase and provide "demo" for people interesting for said DLC). Car list should be focused on racing classes that provide close wheel to wheel action first, so mostly touring cars and stock cars (also returning to RaceDriver/TOCA series' roots). It would be great to see codemasters use their expertise with loose surface handling models by including rallycross/baja events (similar to racing events from original CMR:Dirt). P.S. Whatever they do next, they should continue their emphasis on making AI fun. Little bit more aggression would be appreciated, as well as improving their behaviour during random failures. Tire/engine blowouts would be much better if their chances were related to current state of the car (mostly damage and maybe added maintance system in team management) and could happen to the player. Also AI mistakes should be rewritten - they should include much more "smaller" mistakes like locking up, going off track but only slightly, catching little slides etc. (maybe with pressure mechanic making AI "tired" the longer fight for a place takes place). The spins should be changed completely, as currently (in all games they were included) they happen in really weird places and in really unbelievable ways, most of time break the immersion instead of adding to it.
Very well done! I love the Grid series. I missed out on the original Grid but I do have Grid 2 and Grid Legends. I just picked up Grid Autosport for mobile to use with my GameSir G8 control pad and that is the best racer on mobile. Sad that the series may not keep going but I appreciate the games we got.
I will say it's a shame. They actually brought in Fernando Alonzo to help with 2019. But I'll say. It's worth it to buy legends just for ramping an f1 car around the RB ring
I thought the first GRID hit the sweet spot between arcade and simulation. So confident was that game that it had both a mode where you could not touch the competing vehicle as well as demolition derby. It took a long time to get used to the drift handling of the sequel as well as its progression system. Autosport seemingly overcorrected in this area, removing all semblance of a plot and returning to grippier handling. I appreciate the production values that went into 2019 and especially Legends, but are still both missing the 'IT' factor that the first GRID does. It's hard to have car manufacturers let you damage their vehicles the way the first one did and the racing genre is just different from when the first game came out. Still, I hope EA/Codemasters continues the series.
I feel like the Nemesis system could work like the Grudges & Alliances system in EA's Nascar games. If you drive cleanly and shared draft, they will be allies and would willingly allow you to pass by. If you drive really aggressively, however, they would pay you back. With EA now having Codies under their umbrella, I wonder what stops them to reuse this system.
I actually enjoyed grid legends a lot more than other recent grid games.Yeah it's not like race driver grid but i think it's pretty close.Unfortunately Grid legends won't save the franchise.
@@purwantiallan5089 GRID Legends killed the idea I made of Nathan McKane, portraying him as a trash person. I dont want to hear about this. It doesnt exists to me.
I am sad to hear that the GRID is getting shelved. It's true that later entry feels like a bit lacking, but my favorite one is still the GRID Autosport. I feel like that game responsible for enhancing my gaming racecraft big time. The original one gave me so much fun with all the unique mechanics and racing disciplines, I'd like to play it again though.
What I miss most from the first game that never made it into the sequels was the action style shaky camera when watching replays. That was so effective, like watching James Bond or Bourne Identity car chases. I would've appreciated it if they had included it even as an option during replays.
The physics were the first mistake. The only bad thing about Racedriver GRID was that yellow philer in everything. And the short list of cars with very unballanced setups. Audi R10 beats anything, Corvette C5's overpowered if you buy it new, Dodge Viper is Dodge Viper, etc etc... But the main issue that caused the decline was the physics model. The second was the lack of a first person camera. It returned but the interior detail was atrocious. As was everything else. Codemasters failed to capitalise on what made the original great - Physics, gameplay, damage model, team management.
The first GRID was so much fun. The speed, the chaotic crashes, building a team. It was without a doubt the best in the series. Shame they couldn't top it
I have raced them since the first one, my favourite online racer just to have fun. Theres plenty of people playing Legends online, a select few still drive around in autosport, and grid2 and 2019 are basically dead. But now that EA bought Codemasters the future of the series is definitely in doubt.
The first GRiD game had the best story mode in the entire racing game genre. ... what, it's just "raise money to fund your own team, then beat all competitions with it"? Yes, but anything more complex than that will utterly fail because you can't interrupt the gameplay for a cutscene without it ending up annoying.
Really nice video well put together. I'm a big fan of Grid 1. Music, Lobby, menus in 3D with audio FX, Camera movement, car damage, trailer. Balance between Energy and chillness, easy of playing. This game is a freaking masterpiece. I'm so mad when it come to modern games, they rely on HD graphics to sell the games, but the games have no soul, nothing behind the facade.
There's the Mercedes-Benz 190E in the original GRID, before Electronic Arts purchased Codemasters including the GRID franchise. Then we later saw the same car appear in NFS Unbound.
As a gamer that his first racing game was Grid there are a lot of great things about the original. I played autosport , 2 and 2019 and i got to say that they feel just like another simcade racing game. GRID felt like something different from the physics the effect for instance: if you jump over a kerb the whole camera would shake from bottom to top. Plus the new entries don't have a lot of gameplay from the original (touge lemans even drifting). In the end GRID is maybe my favourite racing game and better than the other installments because of the whole atmosphere, the soundtrack, gameplay, features and replayability. If you ask me you want to revive the series? Release GRID remastered with just better graphics it's the best move at the moment. I love the series and im sad to see it dying but i hope it gets revived someday with an installment that is as good as if not better than GRID.
I played upto Grid 2. Don’t know if I ever played Grid Autosport but the first Grid and Second have a special place in my heart. I never could finish the game as a kid but I had ton of memories with it.
for the race experience i like grid legend the dynamic music make the race feel dramatic , for the immersion i like grid 2/autosport because the first person animation is good you can see the driver hand crossing when crashing and the camera shake is intense at first person camera
Love the new intro, I never had the pleasure of playing these games but I always had a positive impression of it from playthroughs Ive seen. It pains me to see such a once beloved title fade away.
Autosport, for me, is the best racing game period. It has a driving feel I've not found in any other. Such a shame it got overlooked. Racing minis around brands hatch will be with me until I die
It feels much more simulation than arcade unlike the original hence why people didn't like it as much, but i personally enjoyed that with setups and racing lines being more crucial than in the other games
Highly underrated game. So many good memories playing GRID. Still playing the game and after Game Pass delisted the game I bought the physical disk. Never ever to be forgotten.
Seems like the original RACE DRIVER GRID, even in 2023 still managed to recapture all of the epicness especially the very advanced damage modelling that all the sequels from GRID series failed to follow.
I've finished playing Grid 2 career a couple of months ago. My complaint on the game is not just the physics, but having more focus on road cars and street tracks compared to the rest of the franchise, let alone Grid 1. I would have liked Legends but the things that let me down were the inconsistent AI behavior and difficulty and the IMO mediocre track selection (you may have seen my comment in one of the posts in the Grid subreddit about a month ago)
I love this series so much. Grid 1, 2, and 2019 are just such chill games to throw on for a casual race. They require the perfect amount of skill without being stressful.
Grid 2 "Brake to drift" - You drift reglardles. I got it from reseller on steam and tried it out on G29. This is probably the most Confused game I ever played. It has Semi-SIm feel yet you can't even change major car settings, you can't change basicly nothing about handling, tires. gears, no upgrades. You get a car and here you go. Drive it! Many cars would be great if I could change the gear-ratio from long to short. This makes the game very frustrating because it is a semi-sim and even if you like the car you wont use on some tracks because you know the gear ratio on it is bad for that track.
I feel like it’s the damage models. Really, think about it. What Autosport had going for it., was that it, at times, had Burnout levels of Crashes wilst still pursuing that simulation feel, with on track racing, Penalty systems and mecanical damage system after a a collision. This created a game that us simulation game fans could enjoy, but still have it feel like a holleywood interpretation. Them moving away from the damage systems they had I think killed the franchise. Kids who love arcade games all of a sudden didn’t have great crashes anymore. And the people that loved racing sims didn’t get their popcorn-time game anymore. I know it has to do with licensensing. But to hell with it. When I play a racing sim. It has to be an actual sim. When I crash into wall at the speed of 200 kmph, I want my car to turn into a pancake and my tires flying in the distance. Some of these so called sims like GT and forza, you actually just continue driving with some scratches. That is something, for a sim I just cannot accept. I know you’re not supposed to crash your car left and right. But not having the fear of collision actually eliminates risk a real life race would have. For sure you’ll lose some seconds braking late and bumper kissing the car in front of you. It might cost you a position or 2. But realism for me is actually have the risk of not finishing at all because of that one error. And that is something I felt Grid autosport nailed. Albeit not optimal. It was for sure heading in the right direction with that one. Then they decided to eliminate that 1 thing that made Grid stand out from the rest of the pack. And in doing so eliminating the reason to buy this game over any other Sim-like game out there with better licenses.
I couldn't have said it better my dude. The main reason I didn't like the GRID and Grid Legends is the awful crash physics. I love Grid Autosport, why you ask? I turn my entire hud off (which I get 2% more XP) and when I do a nasty crash I always ask it with radio (increase of immersion) and hearing what parts did I damage makes me feel connected to that race. Sometimes the radio guy says "try not to damage your left side anymore it's pretty banged up" or somethings like that, I love hearing that because now I have 1 more goal it's to escape from crashes and actually finishing the race. Damn... I'm gonna miss this feeling so much, I am gonna miss Grid...
I recently picked up GRID Legends since it was free with PS+. One thing I definetely enjoyed was the story, which, Although may not be what others would have hoped for (especially people who followed tbe series since TOCA Race Driver), still managed to catch my attention. That, and the soundtrack made me feel like I was actually putting up a fight against fate itself with each mission. Although I barely got through on Expert Difficulty, I'd definetely try and go another round on Legend
IMO, all they needed to do was take Race Driver Grid, update and expand the car and track list (Dubai's under construction buildings were still being constructed in Legends, 3 games after it's debut ind Grid 2) add new features and events, update the graphics, and they would've had a well received game. Or just make 2 and Autosports' multiplayer careers be the single player career. Having 2 separate careers for each game was unnecessary.
I think what made me fall in love with the RC: Grid was the world and atmosphere, the looks of the cars, the tracks and time of days they would mess around with. The soundtrack after and during the races was such an amazing touch too, like for 14 year old me, seeing the damage models and how visceral it looked and felt compared to my previous racer, Gran Turismo, made me feel so much more immersed than i had ever been. I adored this game, and to be so disappointed by what was a clear downgrade in all aspects by sequels, i just couldnt believe that somehow, codemasters just couldnt revisit the atmosphere that started the franchise.
Imo, the direction this series took after the first installment just made no sense. All they had to do, was follow and stay faithful to the recipe of the first Grid, expand the team management system, keep that beloved physic and damage model, and add more contents. But nope, they just lost track of what fans loved about the series and broke everything.
I have been a Codemasters fan since i played F1 sim on the C64. The original GRID game was their pinnacle in racing games. You felt connected to the car, it had weight and grip and speed. The newer iterations all seem lightweight as regards the handling, with strange physics, more akin to driving a hovercraft than car.
Grid 2 was the only one I played, but it was the last racing game I've completely finished since then. I loved the drifting and the presentation was really good too!
I remember playing Grid 2 and not jelling with it at all and moved on from the series. Then the next gen of consoles came out and I had no idea autosport even released. It was only years later on the cloud streaming service PlayStation Now that I discovered it.
The Grid series is like a rollercoaster for me. Part 1 was the highlight, part 2 was a steep downhill ride, Autosport was much better again, then in 2019 things went downhill again and I really enjoyed legends again. Even though it's nowhere near as good as the first game.
Grid understands everything imo. wer're not mario kart, we're not punitive as a realistic game, lets just make it fun. Racing game devs forget how to make racing and time attack fun, and grid, made good stuff imo, a quite short, but funny as well. a bit like TDU2 or RallySport challenge 2.
Played Grid 1 a lot when it came out and was a huge fan of codemasters. But with grid 2, they switched to dynamically generated tracks which defeats the purpose of racing and trying to get good. Killed the franchise for me 😢
You said it. Between dynamic tracks, ditching the cockpit view, switching to racing for “fans” instead of money and lacking the atmosphere of the original even in basic presentation (that original menu track “Vintage Warmer” was so good) it really didn’t feel like it was a sequel to the original at all.
The simplification of the flashback system was what killed it for me in GRID 2, and its where i dropped the series. i loved the original flashback system because it felt like you were a racing driver who was considering every corner, and constantly thinking about the race. that crash you had? it never happened, it was just something your driver COULD have done. the ability to rewind to ANY moment was also great, because you could play it safe and go all the way back, but you also had the option to risk it and see what would happen if you made just one TINY change instead. GRID 2 feels boring because its just an undo button for when you slam into the wall, and there's no fine control of where you rewind to. Also, the lap penalty system sucks for me because i loved going into a corner way too fast, taking a shortcut and just sliding into the side of someone to brake.
Man they done it once... just do it the same again... Give me a Team to Manage, give me Sponsorships, bring back eBay Cars, let me drive the 24h race as the season finale. Bring back the Damage Model and let me race the different regions again... I know Videogame Development is hard but man, it can't be that hard!
Personally I can understand why people mainly praise the first game because it’s definitely the best game in the series but at the same time I do think that Grid 2 is overlooked and under appreciated. Despite it being a slight departure from the first game and the previous ToCA series it still nailed the most important part of a Grid/ToCA game for me and that’s actually being immersed in the world of professional motorsports while still being accessible for those who want that kind of experience without having to play a full blown racing sim
GRID 2 is a weird one for me because despite having that motorsport aesthetic, the handling and physics feel so disconnected from it. Like, you have drift handling from something like Burnout/NFS, with physics that feel like the light cars from FlatOut 2... So, it's hard for me to feel 'immersed' when everything about controlling the car does NOT feel like any track racer or GRID game I've played.
@@GamerAlexVideos It’s funny because the fact that it’s a track racer that plays nothing like a typical track racer is half the reason why I’ve come to like the game more and more over the years. But yeah, I do understand how the handling model can take someone out of the experience. I was very much in that same boat for years but then one day I randomly replayed the game and something just clicked with me. Edit: There is a mod that removes the drift physics from the game and makes the them feel like a slightly more forgiving version of Autosport’s physics. I would recommend playing the game with that mod at least once
I hate to say it but Race Driver Grid has the best damage model featured on licensed vehicles and it will stay like that for the eternity I'm not even kidding, car companies are so fucked up that I'm pretty sure nothing will change with restrictions, it will get even worse
@@GamerAlexVideos I guess I'm not playing it then. I'm never installing anything with Denuvo. Maybe the piracy community will come to my help tho I'm not expecting anything soon.
Codemasters seemed to forget how to make good racing games, the same thing happened to the DiRT series. It's a shame, as Grid 2008 and DiRT 2 & 3 were some of my all time favourite racing games.
First experience racing against other people was with Grid (autosport I think) Racing while people where chatting on the radio about me in some language I couldn’t understand. Not so positive when you are new to something. Went to pc after that. Grid and TOCA (DTM) where the first racing games.
Good video. I've never actually played Grid 1, as I think it's not for sale anymore (like Dirt 3 and earlier) but I did enjoy some of my time with Grid 2, until the drift physics annoyed me. Maybe it's a good idea to make similar videos on the fall of Dirt and in parallel, the fall of ProjectCARS?
I heavily agree with this. It reminds me of the NFS Shift games where it carried those gritty and dark atmospheric vibes. I would love for any racing game to do something similar, especially with GRID in case they make another game.
the thing i dont like about this franchise is they removed all older games from steam. with nfs titles you can still buy them from origin without license issues.
I started into the series with TOCA Racedriver 3 or DTM Racedriver 3 how it was called here in Germany. I always loved the game and all the sequals. I don't really know why, but Autosport was my absolute favourite of the GRID games and I will play it again and again and again. #LikeNoOther
I 100%-d GRD (2019) recently (excluding some 'Do 500 X' career milestones), and good god this game is FANTASTIC! Stunning visuals, excellent career, great car list, and brilliant engaging (and actually fun to drive) physics & handling, I never expected it to be THAT good. Tbh it even feels better than Legends which always felt to me a bit off, and when compared to GRID (2019) Grid Legends is just... boring, and dull with its lackluster car physics, and somewhat bland chase camera. Despite GL is obviously a better looking game visually, I still prefer the more gritty stylized look of GRID (2019).
Race Driver GRID was by far the best of the series, especially the online aspect. There was a great online community who played it constantly.....then they decided to shut the server down. That was the start of the decline. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
@@JFVideos960 Videos of Legends don't look that good to me. The people tend to say that Grid 1 was the best Grid, but my guess is that Autosport (2014) will be the best Grid for people who like motorsport games like Forza. To me, the FM games have too large a braking distance. That is why I would prefer Autosport in terms of physics. Autosport has too low a chase view and blurred cockpit views though. You will be getting a more arcadey type game, so don't expect a Forza clone. I use -10 steering linearity for gamepads (steering wheel: weight 100% & steering linearity 0).
@@jakes0075 Grid 1 looks pretty good actually but it’s not BC so my only 2 options are 2 and Autosport. I’m not getting 2019 as that one seems like the worst one looking at it and reading the comments. 2 also seems too arcady, so I’m leaning towards Autosport. Could you give me some quick info about the game?
@@JFVideos960 I'm probably not the right person to give you more advice. I only tested the game enough to get the right settings for it and to know that the physics are good enough with certain cars. The wiki page can probably tell you more. I got the PC version very long ago because there are fixes for some things that I didn't like. The DLC with the BTCC tracks seemed a good add-on. Grid 2 seemed more like a Need for Speed game.
Very well made video man! I'm gonna start doing videos like this sometime but I just need more editing experience first and maybe a better PC. Another thing I want to say is I started playing Grid: Legends a couple days ago and I actually had a lot of fun. There are some issues with the game but It's a good game (not a great game). I especially love the track design for most of the original tracks, but the curb physics in the game are so annoying tbh. Cars shouldn't spin that easily riding curbs :/
Never played GRID 1 and 2 and straight to GRID Autosport on both mobile and Nintendo Switch and I personally liked it to be honest, also bought GRID Legends cause seeing the GRID (2019) is more of prone to drift than grip. Overall I life GRID, but only on specific GRID racing games.
I wish grid autosport had an actual campaign with cars to buy/unlock, felt rather pointless, also having tire wear/damage and no pit stops is just absurd.
I just miss a racing game that is a step down from complete sim racing. Forza Motorsport was very nice but I was on the PS platform back then enjoying GT6. I made the complete switch to PC in 2015 and a similar Gran Turismo experience is needed on PC. ACC, IRacing and Rfactor are too steep of a learning curve to fully commit to with my spare time available.
Pt 2.... Grid 2 2013. WTH!?!?!?!? AT LAST!!!!! After a 5 year hiatus we got news of this game incoming, it all LOOKED good and ended up very popular ~5 million sales, scoring 83% avg. For fans of the original game this was tragically bad, instead of a game requiring real world racecraft and a grip style for racing, this was a drift to win racer yet, paradoxically, the drifting was like tea-trays on ice with only point to point drift tracks with staggered launches, so, no chance of tandem drifting and the scoring system utterly destroyed. Result? The original "Gridders" abandoned it and again the forums ended up a battleground of love/hate for the game. The Grid "identity crisis" was born...
I play Race driver Grid, Grid 2, and Grid Autosport on a PS3 and love all three, but for different reasons. Race driver Gird is absolutely brutal! It throw it all at you and is great fun, frustrating and exciting. It is a true video game, one where you have to adapt to survive. Grid 2 is much the same but a little more kind on the track and still needs you to be "in the game". Autosport is a little more kind, and has more structure to gaming progress. All have great graphics, though Race driver has a yellow tone commonly called a piss filter that CodeMasters dropped for the other two games, thankfully. I was a Gran Turismo player for years, starting with the first on a the original Playstation, I loved GT4, but after many years they have lost their appeal somewhat. They now seem boring and a little sedate though I still plat GT5 and GT6 occesionally, but for true fun on the road Grid in it's three PS3 version is where I turn for instant fun and excitement.
I would see the games with "TOCA" title back, Cuz it was very better when the title was TOCA, after first game from rebranded Series "GRID" the games werent the same... and also I like the last game from series, for fact have a better cars, tracks veriety, opitons, modes and etc... My opinion.
RACE DRIVER GRID, 15 years on, still legendary.
Short and sweet always wins 💙
Something that I will always love about the GRID series is how the races felt more alive and unexpected. For instance the AI would sometimes crash out, have tire & engine blowouts, and even battle each other which made the races all the more thrilling. However it is quite a shame to see how over the years, each game could bring something new but fail to deliver the same experience as Race Driver: GRID. Great video Alex, love the outro too!
The random crashes always catch me off guard, and it definitely makes it so much more exciting even when you know they are 'scripted' lol.
@@GamerAlexVideos Exactly my thoughts lol
As a diehard Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, GRID 1 from 2008 still legendary even 15 years on.
I am similar to you. I like realistic games but I hate having to learn a track/car for hours. That's why I always liked grid, gran turismo, etc
The overall grit in Race Driver Grid cannot be unmatched. It had so much personality that the sequels failed to recapture.
@@kpegc despite being successors they kinda went backwards gameplay wise or tried to change something that didn't need it
Grid 2 was awesome
Yeah as someone who's not into serious sims or arcade racers I really enjoyed Race Driver Grid. I enjoyed the team management, livery customization with sponsors, it added RPG element. The game felt Cinematic, like you're roleplaying in "Days of Thunder" especially with the cockpit view. When I heard Grid 2 didn't have Cockpit view I lost interest and never went back to the series. Looking at Grid Legends they added those glow guides and boosters... that makes it too arcady for me than the more balanced feel of the original Grid.
@@abmong you are not very easily pleased. Just jump on a game and see it for what it is
the immersion made GRID different, the soundtrack on final championship races, cheering crowds, random accidents
Yep. The soundtrack that goes intense on the final hours of 24 HRS OF LE MANS.
Nothing is more satisfying than seeing your ai opponents crashing and making the same mistakes as you, it makes the gaming experience that much more immersive unlike most games that have perfect ai opponents.
The thing I think most people don't understand is that
GRID wasn't just called GRID
it was called Race Driver: GRID
GRID: Autosport was not an out-of-the-blue rise in simulation handling for the game, it was basically trying to become ToCa 4.
I rate GRID 2019 higher than GRID Legends. The economy is so broken in Legends it's not funny. And at least GRID 2019 had qualifying.
@@markisaki979 How os the economy broken?
@@markisaki979 not really, if you just play through the carreer mode you earn a lot, I only had to grind for stage upgrades which was a little annoying bc it's based on miles driven
@@MaxRamos8 The payouts for a race is at most one seventh of what you would earn in an equivalent race in GRID 2019. And most of the time, even if your car does meet the mileage requirements, you either still wouldn't be able to afford all the upgrades, or you'd be bled dry unless you've purchased a discount upgrade, which should have been unlocked with a driver level increase.
Demolition derby on GRID was special. So many great times and memories
I think another problem GRID faced along with Dirt was Codemasters tendency to delist the games meaning players could not enjoy what might have been their preferred game and it took away appeal from fans who were on tighter budgets and couldn't afford 80$ games.
not that it helps the fact that having real life cars meaning it's basically doomed to delisting at some point, but still having such a short timeframe meaning piracy/emulation is the only way you could play these games
same as Forza games before the last two Horizons, which I'm surprised H4 still sold on digital platforms considering the predecessors we're being delisted after 5 years

@@kpegc Horizon 4 was meant to be a longer lasting game, so i assume they invested more in its licenses than in the previous entries
@@lRedKill3ragree.
That explains why horizon 1 has great vibes and awesome handling cars
I like grid, I like that the A.I crash here and there and the A.I can be aggressive causing them to also make mistakes. This game helped me get into racing games.
AI mistakes in GRID 2008 is way more advanced. Than even PROJECT CARS 3 and GT7.
No doubt.
However dumbed down damage model, somewhat weird, twitchy behaviour of some cars, weird car choices (like why do you need 2 classes with both retro and current muscle cars instead of separating them etc.)
If we ever get another Grid game, it should return to the roots of the series and be return to "RaceDriver" name.
I picked GRID 1 and Autosport despite many say Autosport is the one that killed GRID franchise.
The physics were horrible imo, I much prefer grid legends
It seems like you are saying that Grid Legends is worth giving a try. What is your opinion on Dirt 5?
Seemingly EA & Codies are teamed up together to ruin their own great games.
God I love Grid Autosport. Easily one of the best racing games I've ever played.
Coco Hayashi also still has Grid Autosport and GRID 2008 on her backlog.
They shouldn't have drop "Race Driver" from the name. Game lost its mojo right after this.
I think if they released a Race Driver: Grid Remastered that fixed the colour grading, and physics handling, most fans would be happy
I actually enjoyed grid legends a lot more than other recent grid games.Yeah it's not like race driver grid but i think it's pretty close.Unfortunately Grid legends won't save the franchise.
The game had character, because not every AI driver was the same, and they made human mistakes too, which were unpredictable unscripted crashes.
GRID LEGENDS seemingly the only game that had characters.
Coco Hayashi, me, ShioPomu (Ayumu & Shioriko) all loved Grid Autosport too!
Why do devs do such stupid mistakes?
The original Grid had always been my favorite, and while Legends has its issues, it's now my new favorite.
For me my favourites always GRID 1, Autosport, and Legends (despite it is tied as the WORST GRID game along with GRID 2019).
Shame they couldn't top it
Agree. I also ever formed "Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Racing Team" on GRID 2008! 👍
Very good retrospective, you nailed my feelings with the franchise up until Grid Autosport. (By the way, that new intro goes hard)
Coco Hayashi personally prefer 2008 RACE DRIVER GRID and 2014's Grid Autosport. The last GRID game for 7th gen ports.
A new, sleek and seemless Intro, great videostructure (as always) and that ending though! It really feels like you're stepping up your game Alex!
Yep. Seems like the intro of this is already legends
I am so glad people remember Race Driver Grid
i remember liking Grid it was accelerated & fast but it had a relaxin' vibe & graphics.
There's the Mercedes-Benz 190E in the original GRID, before Electronic Arts purchased Codemasters including the GRID franchise. Then we later saw the same car appear in NFS Unbound.
GRID autosport will always be my favourite. Its soundtrack is beautiful, I loved the professional tone to it
As a gamer that his first racing game was Grid there are a lot of great things about the original.
Agree.
Agree. Due to usual microtransactions from Codies and EA.
As an OG ToCA series fan the move to Grid's arcade style was the downfall.
I remember they had a GRID arcade machine at my 8th grade dance i played the HELL outta it😂😂😂
I feel like it’s the damage models.
Realistic crash physics in Race Driver Grid is a blessed and cursed at the same time.
As a diehard fan of Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, i also love GRID series since 2003 basically.
It was only years later on the cloud streaming service PlayStation Now that I discovered it.
many years later, GRID 2008 still stands as the best simcade racer for me. Such a shame the new games couldn't capture the same depth as this one :/.
The Grid series is like a rollercoaster for me. Part 1 was the highlight, part 2 was a steep downhill ride, Autosport was much better again, then in 2019 things went downhill again and I really enjoyed legends again. Even though it's nowhere near as good as the first game.
Very good history lesson. Thanks. I will consider finding a copy.
The only down point of the first game is the ultra sensitive damage model. Just by touching the opponent's car you can blow up your windows.
I play the original Racedriver: Grid to this day. I have never loved any other racing game quite like this one.
TOCA Race Driver 3 (and Colin 04) are still my favorite Codemasters games and in my opinion these are overall their best games.
I hate to say it but Race Driver Grid has the best damage model featured on licensed vehicles and it will stay like that for the eternity
I'm not even kidding, car companies are so fucked up that I'm pretty sure nothing will change with restrictions, it will get even worse
IMO: Grid 2008 100%, Grid Autosport 95%, Grid 2019 85%, Grid 2 70%. Haven't played Legends yet, waiting for Denuvo to be removed.
Sadly I don't think Denuvo will ever be removed from the game. EA rarely ever seems to do that
@@GamerAlexVideos I guess I'm not playing it then.
I have a soft spot in my heart for grid 2 it was so much fun playing that game as a kid will always love it
First experience racing against other people was with Grid (autosport I think)
Racing while people where chatting on the radio about me in some language I couldn’t understand.
Not so positive when you are new to something.
Went to pc after that.
Grid and TOCA (DTM) where the first racing games.
Back in the day when Codemasters wasn't afraid of showing realistic damage on cars.
Good video. I've never actually played Grid 1, as I think it's not for sale anymore (like Dirt 3 and earlier) but I did enjoy some of my time with Grid 2, until the drift physics annoyed me.
Maybe it's a good idea to make similar videos on the fall of Dirt and in parallel, the fall of ProjectCARS?
grid legends just needs a revamp with the damage graphics like a grid legends 2 with updated stories and career play
hashtag bring back mature and dark tones to racing games
Grid legends was so unlucky of releasing when gt7 and elden ring released , plus forza being a hit at the same time
I 100%-d GRD (2019) recently (excluding some 'Do 500 X' career milestones), and good god this game is FANTASTIC!
I also played Grid Legends. I even got the 488 GTE.
Race Driver GRID was by far the best of the series, especially the online aspect. There was a great online community who played it constantly.....then they decided to shut the server down. That was the start of the decline. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I've played the 2008, 2019, and i just bought the Grid Legends (PS4).
Loved the 2008 to bits.
I hope you enjoy Legends!
For me, Autosport was a good step forward. Shame they decided to return to the cheesy arcade model for the reboot.
I like Autosport. Would you recommend Grid Legends??
@@jakes0075Hey, I’m looking to get into Grid and I didn’t like Legends all that much. I’m a big Forza guy and I was wondering if Autosport is good
@@JFVideos960 Videos of Legends don't look that good to me.
GRID officially died in 2019 when Codemasters became more preoccupied with appearing as ''diverse & inclusive'' than making a competent simcade racer.
I liked several of those, Grid Autosport being my favorite.
I wish grid autosport had an actual campaign with cars to buy/unlock, felt rather pointless, also having tire wear/damage and no pit stops is just absurd.
this video shows how much importante good preview for youtube algorithms
I just now realized Grid legends exists, thought 2019 was last game.
I Like TOCA 3 PS1
and
GRID 2
In this series
I just miss a racing game that is a step down from complete sim racing. Forza Motorsport was very nice but I was on the PS platform back then enjoying GT6. I made the complete switch to PC in 2015 and a similar Gran Turismo experience is needed on PC. ACC, IRacing and Rfactor are too steep of a learning curve to fully commit to with my spare time available.
Maybe you can buy a key for FM7 for PC? They stopped selling it, but key sellers still sell them. I believe you can’t buy DLC, though.
If only night city track from GRID2 not scrapped and able to race car on any track it will be better
I would see the games with "TOCA" title back, Cuz it was very better when the title was TOCA, after first game from rebranded Series "GRID" the games werent the same... and also I like the last game from series, for fact have a better cars, tracks veriety, opitons, modes and etc...
My opinion.
