Grid and Dirt 2 made me feel like being at the track for the weekend. They got the ATMOSPHERE right. No matter how shiny the graphics got in modern games, those 2 got what racing was all about and no one was able to replicate.
Same. There was no other racing game that had the same structure quality of team management and overall variety of racing. This is the game that made me get adrenaline rush every time I enter a race. It’s sad because the sequels failed with a lot of qualities that the original grid had.
Race Driver Grid is in my top 5 favorite closed circuit racing game of all time. 1. NFS prostreet 2. Project Gotham Racing 4 3. Race Driver Grid 4. Grid 2 5. Project Gotham Racing 3
I can confidentely say that Race Driver: GRID is the racing game and it will *Never Ever* be something alike. It's strong career structure, neat features, team management, sponsorships, the whole atmosphere, the frenetic soundtrack, Ravenwest's presence and how intense the AI can be even how evident the rubberband is. It's the game that breaks the taboo that closed track racing games CAN be fun It's the definition of how hard racing can be in a videogame. I bet for how incredibly detailed the car damage models were that car makers wasn't very pleased but we just don't plain crash cars just for the sake of it. (but they are incredibly fun) we just learn how these race cars are fragile if you're not carefull enough so it's actually integral part in racing because we all know what actually happens in motorsports irl and not having a similar experience in videogame feels quite limiting for a genre that used to push the boundaries in the past two decades... the absolute thril to keep your car intact throughout the race. Thats one the things that made this franchise standout from Gran Turismo or Forza. As much as I liked few of the sequels like GRID 2 and Legends the first game is simply *undisputed* and it deserves more recognition. Excellent video!
Ravenwest was such a good gameplay dynamic, more racing games need a villain/rivalry dynamic. I love seeing that black livery like "oh it is on". Bully ahead on the first corner and keep them in the mirror. Make that rear bumper a mile wide
Being an arcade racing gamer and massive motosport enthusiast, I tried this game out during the pandemic as I had been told it was fantastic To this day, it's still my favorite game of all time. In my eyes, no other manages to immerse you better in the world of motorsport in such a fun yet simple manner. Despite having beaten it 100%, I still come back to it, desperately trying to have as much fun as I had on my first playthrough
There's a couple maps where if you use the skyline you can put it on like 10 laps and destroy all your opponents by like lap 6/7 I had a blast doing that before things like wrekfest came along
The music has that early 2000s vibe, the physics are all you could ask for, the progression is smooth, event variety makes it fun, spontaneous 24 hours de le mans is a cherry on the top, sponsors, teammates, customization, this game is amazing in executing every aspect just right.
One more thing I'd love to mention is the replay system. Got to get back from the game after a while of Racing Masters and realized how GRID 1's replay looked like an actual movie for every replay. The shots, the vibration, there are sense of speed almost everywhere, and all tied together with the aforementioned godsent of the fast-paced OST. I know, the replay system's not something big to contribute to the entire gameplay, but it's fun once every while to see how you looked like when you raced on the track, and GRID delivered the best one there is. It's hard to find any kind of replay system as great as RD:GRID had, even with later game titles.
this game IS an undeniable masterpiece, literally no other game manages to get close to the feel racedriver: grid gives you, the music is unforgettable, the progression is so good that the only game that beats it is gt4, the physics are great, the races are genuinely fun and interesting and the variety is just wonderful. this game is not perfect, but it definitely gets close. also modding can make the game EVEN better
"The only game that beats it is GT4" Bruh.Did you even play GT4? GT4 progresion is fucking broken and is awful. It can be easily cheesed. It takes like two hours just to get the national B license for a new player.
i pased gt4 up to 99,6% and tried to get all the cars and all version of all cars, i got more than 1250 car i think anly had two left, and one race. but the feeling, the strees, the carrer, the racing feel is way better in grid
This game, together with Need For Speed Most Wanted, Shift 2: Unleashed and DiRT 2, is one of my favorite racing games of all time. What makes these games for me is the intensity, the feeling of speed at all times. You should do a Shift 2 review! It's a great game, it's driving is dangerous and on your face all the time. Great video!
Totally agree, GRID 1, the old NFS's games till Most Wanted and later Shift 1 and 2, and finally DiRT 2 are probable the best race arcades of all time, non other games are like this ones, new NFS's are just trash with brake to drift mechanis that are anoying, the rest of GRID series aren't as good as the firts, and non other of the DiRT games are as enjoyable as the second (that even had one of the best soundtracks of all race games), new games aren't good in general now days, they lost something, but in racing games probably is the worts (even in sim's, since Assetto Corsa there are not real develoment).
19:50 The first version of the game's menu music is one of my absolute favourite pieces of original video game music, not just for a racing game but for any game in general. Nostalgic bliss.
what i really like from this game is the sponsorship feature and the tv overlay hud man it work just like real motosport racing tv overlay when you're having battle with certain driver it doesn't move your position up or your opponent down until you can confirm the overtake that is detail that i never seen ever again on future racing game i played like every grid game and race driver is the most unique one
For me, GRID feels like Eurosport, Speed Channel, or Motors TV: The Game. Especially since you can actually pick the Speed Channel as a sponsor for your team! As a 3rd-4th grader when the game was still fresh off release, I loved how Speed Channel's motorsports broadcasts genuinely celebrated the world of professional motorsports and made you feel like you were really at the race track. So to play a game like GRID that did that in video game form was an amazing experience for me, especially since DiRT 2 would release in 2009 and do the same thing with its extreme sports aesthetic (which I actually liked; contrary to popular opinion back then). It's somewhat disheartening that none of the sequels were able to capture the magic or immersion of the first game for me, but perhaps it goes to show just how special GRID 1 was.
Despite GRID being the first appearance of the EGO engine, technically the game engine started with DiRT 1. It was originally called Neon before it got changed to the EGO name!
I wanted to mention this, but for clarity sake I decided to stick with GRID as that’s the first time when it was called the EGO engine as it still is today.
can we talk about how banging the soundtrack was tho? The ravenwest 1v1 in the 350z's had the single best OST I've heard in a racing game, and the Silvia drift 1v1 is close second. The menu music is chill and the Le Mans OST is legendary.
I think that the 350Z 1v1 was XLR8, which is also one of my favourites. However, after giving all of them a try, I still have to stick with Razor’s Edge as my #1 GRID OST song.
@@mrxbasthe 350z duel soundtrack is called Vroom, which is a pretty appropriate name. I’ve got the whole soundtrack downloaded to my PC and you bet it’s in any racing game that allows custom music to be added. I’ve also got Car Mechanic Sim 2021 and having the GRID menu music play while working on cars is borderline therapeutic
How campaigh was built in GRID was a masterpiece. I actually immersed myself as one of the drivers, that start from scratch and race his way up, upgrade cars and garage, hire 2nd driver, choose sponsors etc etc etc. And at end of season, Le Mans event ! One of the VERY BEST racing games i have ever played, and i pretty much played almost everything.
Grid is one of the highlights when it comes to racing games. This game is among my all time favourite racing games. Visuals, damage, handling and the progression was very good and i remember causing chaos on Circuit de la Sarthe by braking on the straight and the ai crashed all over the place which ended up with most of the ai struggling to finish the race. The drifting was addicting and racing was fun. The menu theme is damn nostalgic too.
One of the games I'm more than happy to complete multiple times over. Also, the arcade cabinets are very fun (when they work and haven't been tampered with) and definitely are worth the quid that you put in. Yes it's a general arcade 3-4ish stage events (losing ends the session) it definitely is grid and are my go too whenever I go to an amusements that has it.
@mrxbas oh agreed. It's much better suited than standard 4 Lane Outrun 2005 esque game. Only issue. I've still never cracked any leaderboards on them cause I always get stuck on the final race due to the ai just bullshitying me. If you can find one, you must play it. I know there's a fair few dotted around the UK. Not sure about overseas however
When I was a kid I went to Knott's Berry Farm and they had them. Great fun. I remember these grown-ass adults playing, they picked the easiest car and easiest course. I raced against them with the hardest car. They slammed into every wall at full speed and I just took corners normally and won, they asked me how I was so good at it for a kid. Like as if a kid shouldn't know what a racing line is, or what a damn brake pedal is.
@@347SeibaDynasty Outrun not suited as an arcade racing game??? I've played the grid arcade a few times and it's def fun, but even with a working ffb wheel the steering is just way too floaty to work correctly on a wheel, the game being playable on a wheel was very clearly an afterthought...
@@De_kaid Never tried this on arcade but gave a try last year on my ffb wheel (t300) at home. It was jizs bad, car was sliding for most of time. On keyboard however it was great. Even managed driving without TCS and drift events too. Only starting was with wheelspin.
So nice to see so many people commenting their memories of this game. I was Lead Environment Artist / Lead Technical Artist on the first few Dirt and Grid games. They were really fun to make and Grid especially came together so well, we know we were making something pretty special at the time. Thank you for making this video and all the lovely comments. Really made my day reading them :)
Great to hear that even from a developer’s point of view, you knew that GRID was going to be as beloved as it is today! From watching developer insights and some of the images during the credits, the passion and enthusiasm for the game was visible everywhere :) Also, I hope that it wasn’t too shocking to watch this video with my shader preset; although I can appreciate the yellow filter of the 2000s in a way, it’s something I wanted to change to make it look more contemporary and more appealing to viewers who did not grow up with games having this kind of filter, which in my opinion looks a bit out of place nowadays.
@@mrxbas Hahaha, I very much appreciate the removal of the yellow filter :) There was actually a hardware bug on the x360 that meant the gamma curves were off - so lots of the games around suffered from overlay black elements. this was partially the reason why games of that time had a specific, look the "Gears of War brown".
Bought this game on PS3 on the release day and utterly fell in love with it immediately. To this day, I still play it once or twice a year on PC because it's just too good to get bored of it... Definitely in my top 3 favorite racing games I played and maybe in an overall top 10
Maaaan, I'm so grateful that you made this video. I love racing games, and I love Grid 1 and 2 even more. The physics are far from great, making it hard to come back from more realistic racing games, but the sound, the visuals, the atmosphere, the unlimited challenges, the constant fight with Ravenwest... I simply love these masterpieces, and nowadays they run very well on Intel Integrated graphics (intel sponsored these games). You are wrong about one thing: The Audi is not the only way to win the LeMans series. First I hated that every seson ends with the LeMans races, but I practised and grew skills. I won the highest class with the cheapest LMP1 car (Lola?) and also with a used Audi. It was a challenge in most categories, but after some hours of practice I could beat some of the higher class cars with a lower class one. I still don't like the LeMans part, but the whole game (Especially the 1st one) are the true diamonds of racing games. Great content, keep on doing such! Cheers from Hungary ;)
Hey, do you know how to get the game to run on widescreen 1080p? I used to love this game on my ps3 but recently got a pc and this was one of the first games I bought for it
@@georgehitchen702 what program or emulator are you using to run it? You gotta try the emulators video settings. For example I play Gran Turismo 3 on PCSX2 and I adjust the settings on PCSX2 directly.
Still remember the time where my car gave way and crashed, and when i tried recovering, every other opponent crashed into me and not even flashbacks could save me. I just silently turned my xbox off and just processed what i witnessed when that happened. Fun times.
This game and Dirt 2 were my first played with a steering wheel. To this day I remember the sharp, proper force feedback Grid gave me. every jump, kerb, slip. All this with an old Driving Force GT. Good all times.
I played it at around 2012 and I absolutely loved it, I played it again from start to finish about a year ago but now that I now that there's a mod that enhances the career, I'm gonna have to play it again!
Just the chill main menu music and being greeted with your own name makes it worth it. but then you cant stop playing it because its such a great racer and it looks phenomenal on xbox 360 still to this day. its amazing!
I started out with Simon Doherty as my team member in this game. He was pretty bad at first, had accidents all the time. But he got significantly better the more I played, to the point where I finish first and he's in second in every race. There's even been a few Le Mans races where we'd be in a lower class but still ahead of other classes together. Not to mention he's got a couple quips in the race and it makes him feel like an actual person. I've grown quite attached to him as my second driver since then, it makes me not want to ever replace him lol. I don't know if I'm the only one who feels that way in this game.
This game is by far my favorite racing game. The arcade physics. The drifting with the Asian guy talking to hype you up. The 24hr La Mans. The sponsors giving you bonuses. This game deserves a come back because it was already perfect.
I think it's very similar to how Most Wanted's cop chatter provides a source of very useful (and sometimes vital) information. It's a very well-made and fleshed out mechanic in GRID.
GRID 1 was unbelievably good for that time, that menu music sure brings back awesome vibes. Edit: Dude, you included the NFSW ambient aswell? Now the retro vibes are complete, WTH Edit2: okay i mean i got to say i was heavily into GRID back in the day, day in day out, all the night i played it with a friend from the other side of the world, i dont know how many hours i have put into this, thousands! but seeing this, hearing this and remembering all of this, even if it was personally not a good time almost makes me tear up. They just don't make games like this anymore.
It's simply a masterpiece. The handling feels bizarre and really weird when you first start playing but as soon as you get dialed in its just a total joy! The detail in the games is totally missing in current gen games
I loved the GRID Arcade cabinet, it was the one reason that kept me traveling 1-2hrs to the nearest playdium (corporate arcade). I would buy the 1-2hr pass and just sit there race after race with friends. Sure it didnt have many choices but it was still good fun.
in my life There is no game as good or as good as Grid and Drit 2. They still hold a special place in my heart. The more you use the view in the cabin. It's even more awesome.
Race driver GRID was a game so good, so influential and important to me and my childhood that when I eventually sorted out my own PC and got my own steam account (as I'd play on my father's account and play games like this) I looked to buy it and couldn't and ended up going as far as to buy a steam key for it 🤣. I even bought GRID Motorsport and played the hell out of that but nothing truly captured racing in the way this game did. I went on to do simracing in project cars 2 and win league races in assetto Corsa but I've never had as much fun as I had on this game. Love the video man this absolutely made my day! 👍
To answer your question from near the end of the video: I played it on release, and I played it recently. On release I bought the physical version for PC (which I still have laying around), and somewhere later down the line I bought the game once more on Steam (which allows me to play it on my Steam Deck, which is a fantastic way to experience the game).
Neat! I also first got to play this as a teenager through a physical copy and bought GRID Reloaded a few years later for console (to experience the DLC cars back then), but now it's trivial to get the complete (and arguably best) experience through PC and some (incredibly easy to install) mods.
@@mrxbas Excuse me, "GRID Reloaded"? First time I have heard of this. But yeah, back when GRID came out, PC gamers pretty much got the stick when it came to DLCs. Other examples I know of where Burnout Paradise and NFS Hot Pursuit. In both cases, PC players didn't get the DLCs.
Fun fact, a huge part of why the arcade but insanely precise physics worked so well was because the developers used dynamic wind force while braking, the car received a massive frontal downforce by faking braking with strong frontal "wind", this avoided massive issues with tire friction model slipping, brake locks and so on and was in part why it feels so good to drive cars in that game.
About the driver errors and car crashes. I played this game online until they shut down the servers, and this was the best online experience i've had in any racing game. There is nothing like having to dodge 10 crashed cars through a smoke screen because a single troll went wrong direction and crashed head on into the race leader, leaving hundreds of pieces of debris on the tracks. And it wont vanish, so you will have to dodge it every lap. This game was amazing, i doubt the modern developers will have the iq to replicate it or even understand why it was so good.
@@aaaagamedev3524 Exactly in the same vein why there won't be another GTA4, Far cry 2 or Battlefield Bad company 2 etc. Those games along with GRID even to this day are amazing and pure fun. Lots of big name companies now lack the IQ or soul to even create those games again. Even Todd Howard with his amazing creations of morrowind and oblivion etc making braindead content now... we were 100% spoiled man with amazing content back then.
Bought this game at launch, and to this day i haven't forgotten it. Every once in awhile i still boot this game up to play an open wheel tiny F1 race in the san fran circuit and switch to dashboard display. One of the first to introduce the rewind feature, especially important when you either mess up or the intrusive thoughts kick in. As you expand, you get a racing buddy. I think i ended up hiring Nathan McKane, and racing felt a little different and better, knowing you had a solid AI buddy that could score a podium finish with you and that you weren't alone in having to 1st place everything like other games. It captured some realism sorely needed in this genre and at the same time recaptured my love of racing games that i got when playing Top Gear, the Rave/Ridge/Rage Racer series and later the Gran Turismo series. Especially the rewind feature, holy shit, I wish I had that on the A Spec II endurance races back in the day.
Grid was awsome ; i remember that one race with extreme high end cars where i was runing 2nd after a shunt at the start line on some city course; and the leader wouldnt give up an inch... was riding his bumper all along the race but could out brake it and had less acceleration that it ... that is ; untils the last corner on the last lap ; when he downshifted ; his engine blew up with an amazing smoke puff ( me not understanding right away ... moving out the way , on the inside ; as fast as possible while hard on the brakes ) and him lokcing up the wheels and spining out into the outside barrier of the corner .... EPIC moment of racing from that game ; i dont think i ever had something that close as a race yet with such a twist that made me enjoy the sim more than the race itself. what a race it was. that being said ; i also remember how bad the online races could get ; and real fast.....
i loved grid 1 back in the day there was nothing quiet like it. your video made me want to replay it with the xtra mod so thanks for that. ive watched your GT4 With Only CHEAP Used Cars too and your GT4 4 With Only Road-legal Cars video too and damn ur editing improved dramaticly so keep it up 👍
As a devoted racing fan (i'm huge sucker for gran turismo style games, but also overall track racing games) i consider GRID to be one of the pivotal titles for racing games, and pretty much a starting point for a new sub-genre. Grid combined track base of it's predecesor (and games like Gran Turismo, GTR 2) and mixed with agressive AI and crashes straight out of hardcore arcade game. This new brand of track based racing games that takes from both sims and arcades was so unique and brand new, that EA made NFS Shift as a direct response (sub series that i like EVEN more). And overall GRID set new standards for adrenaline felt in racing game. On top of that the artstyle was pure magic so it feels timeless and still beautifull. And as i mentioned before i like Shift and Shift 2 even more - with a bit more complex driving model, and cockpit view so immersive that you won't use any other.
One of my most favourite games of all time, played through it at least 3 times. Even though I installed it a few years after the game was released, I was blown away by how good its arcade or simcade side was done. Also totally agree - soundtrack just perfect.
I remember playing this on my PS3 when I was like 11 or so. I remember doing the drift mode and it was so satisfying and i felt like i was actually good at it. It was the first time i really, really enjoyed drifting in a video game.
Ooooohhhhhhhhh you just made me extremely happy with including the safehouse music from NFS World in this video Too many people have either not heard of or forgotten it in the dust, but it's still plenty alive with the community servers
Some of the codmasters devs worked on forza horizon. I thought that game was magical. Great music. Great selection of cars. Then they added The Eliminator and ruined the map. Grid, Dirt 2, and horizon on 360 ruled all. Now I'm just chasing the dragon.
I still have my PS3 and I only picked up this game a few years ago, it’s a great game indeed especially considering it’s from 2008! It also has Jeroen Bleekemolen in it who is my boss as I work at his karting centre in Amsterdam 😂 That kinda makes it even cooler haha
Damn, finally someone who appreciates GRID for the music, I personally think it's the series' strongest aspect, and Ian really outdid himself recently for Legends' soundtrack, especially the GRID 1's remixes in the Ravenwest DLC. If I could listen to only one song for the rest of my life, it would definitely be Razor's Edge
I actually had a listen to the GRID Legends "Reloaded" songs (in other words, remixed GRID 1 songs) from Ian Livingstone and although they are quite different in pacing, they're indeed still quite nice!
@@mrxbas I think the ingame versions of GRID 1's songs were sped up by about 9-10% because the official OST for GRID 1 has them matching the pace of Legends' versions so maybe when Ian was remaking them for Legends he just used the original intended pacing
Great video! I have always loved the grid series. I feel like grid 2019 feels a lot like grid 1, and drives perfectly. I also love grid 2, even though I hate the dusty camera effect they added. Whole series is amazing
This is one of my favorite racing game of all time. I remember the excitement when grid 2 was announced and the subsequent disappointment with all its sequels. I replayed it recently and racing through the docks still as fun as it was back then
Damn, good memories. I played this game a lot. One satisfying thing that I haven't seen too many games doing is keeping track how many miles you've driven the car and also when you were purchasing 2nd hand ones it would say how many they've got on the clock, directly affecting its performance the more used cars were. Extremely fun gameplay and graphics for the time as well. Heck, I would have absolutely no problem with the details of the game even now in 2023.
It blew me away when it came out. The awesome replay of the race you just won was almost always too good to pass. Racedriver Grid was far ahead of its time. I loved you're video about it. Keep it up.
This is the best racing game that i ve tried... it has a very immersive career mode, and was very fun to drive... many games are passed, many careers was completed, but this remains the best one...
I absolutely loved playing GRID! In fact, I played it at the arcades before I bought it on Steam. Before the cabinets were moved elsewhere, I believe I held the lap records for Washington, San Francisco, Milan, Long Beach and Nurburgring.
I was having so much fun driving with the assists off, but at some point it became borderline impossible to make turns with the fastest cars while the competition was doing it with no effort. So it kind put me off from as the assists make the game not as fun.
This game really shot my hopes up so high for the future of racing games when I was a kid. its pretty upsetting that this was in many ways the peak time of the genre
I have always said that Grid is the best racing game ever.. Its attention de details is beyond imagination! I played it on release on PC! Then 6 years later, I replayed it on PS3 and the immersion was still the same. I am counting on playing it again soon! It has the right content, game depth and purpose without all the BS of current market. Thank you for this video!
Idk where in the Netherlands you live, but in Tilburg, there's an arcade called "the gaming factory" where they have the GRID arcade cabinet. You also just pay a flat entrance fee instead of on a per game basis. They also have a lot of other cool racing game cabinets if you're interested.
TL:DR -- At the time, and still to this day, GRID is respected as the best arcade racer in recent times. I'm still playing this right now. I have all the GRID games and played all of them through in full. Code Masters are the kings of racing games. This video covers all the amazing things that make GRID a fan favourite among racers, even if they prefer sim racing. Progression, model physics, integrated storyline, the feel of extreme speed, multiple racing disciplines, and a low-key lore that was expanded upon in GRID Legends, makes this franchise a must have for any fan of racing games. I enjoyed ToCA and Dirt. ToCA and Cart World Series (Sony Interactive) were my two first racing games on the PS1 when I first got the console. At that moment, racing games became my favourite genre of gaming, hands down. I enjoy everything Code Masters and this to me was their crowning glory franchise. Some will say Dirt, others may say their F1 series. Sim is fine, but sim-cade or straight arcade is where the fun is. Thrash cars into a corner, trade paint with opponents and drive flat out with no fear is what makes this franchise top. Thank you for showcasing such an amazing game. With GT Sport and 7, Forza Horizon and Motorsport out there, sim has become the new hype. It's always nice to just dial back and just blasting around a track at full throttle for sheer fun.
this was my only ps3 game for almlst 2 years, because hacking a ps3 wasn't in the sight of a 10yr old child (me) i didn't knew any english, I've been playing for months without even knowing that thetr was a campaign, and it took months for me to beat the game GRID is still my favorite racing game, drifting is amazing, the car destruction and sound design is still amazing to this day, the soundtrack is memorable, even tough it isn't playing the whole time i still remember it all of those years later it's weird for me to say this but i have an emotional attachment to this racing game, all of the later entries are still good games but the 1st GRID still gets a place in my heart
It looks great. Not sure why some people prefer it darker blue. I'd mod the my team menu so that 'change name' was last on the menu, and 'Sponsor' was first. You can wreck a car instantly and be out of the race. Love it
Back in 2008 or so, I remember going to a massive local lan party (about 200+ computers on site) and watching this game being played on a massive projector at max graphics on one of the Europe tracks (the one that you go through the city) with all the reflections and HDR-like features. Blew my mind, back then I had a mid-end Geforce 8600GT and it was just barely enough to run Crysis at medium graphics... but this game ran amazingly good on my right, so we spent hours and hours racing through LAN multiplayer. The sense of speed and camera blur from the cockpit blur never stopped amazing me. You guys have to understand that at this time, the most advanced graphics were at NFS Carbon (Bump mapping on the roads with proper texturing), and then this came out, looking fresh and being the first "proper next gen" racer for that console generation.
Toca Race Drive 3 still to this day is the greatest track racer ever made. All racers look the part, the car may drive the part but none of them have AI that actually races and feels more human than Toca Race Driver 3. If you have the AI in TRD3 set lower than 108% your not racing with the AI, your just hoping to win! 😁
I remembered this was in my Steam library the other day. I've been on a bit of a racing kick recently but haven't wanted to go head first into the games that are more like racing sims yet. I'm more of an arcade and AG guy, so this actually looks like a great transitional game towards something like Forza MS or Gran Turismo. Last time I tried playing GT I was 13 and I don't think I was really able to appreciate it yet.
Damn this hit the spot. I remember having so much fun with this game, but pulling out my hair with the Formula events xD. Still, GRID has a special place in my heart among a few other games that I really appreciate to have been able to play.
Loved this game. For a “arcade” game I still love the handling of it compared to much more serious games today. The way the cars bounce over curbs and lose traction of individual wheels combined with the extreme damage model really made them feel real in a way I don’t think even Codemasters have gotten right since.
I haven't played too many 7th gen or newer racing games, but Grid 1 and Dirt 3 have to be a couple of my favorite physics/handling models I've played on. I think the ideal solution for most racing games would be to simulate weight/mass, inertia/bumps, and suspension geometry *extremely* accurately, engine/transmission *mostly* accurately, have a relatively *arbitrary/simple (but functional) tire model,* have a *mostly accurate aero* model that *changes midair so that cars jump/land straight* and you have a touch of midair control, then make all the *chassis infinitely/perfectly stiff* so that's not a factor that messes with handling. This way, the correct things are simulated so that setup and power/weight ratios matter, while the devs can dial in unrealistically high grip to make things easier/faster/more fun, and at the same time, jumping a car isn't a possible death sentence since you won't typically land on your roof/side/nose/tail unless you hit an angled ramp or otherwise REALLY force it to happen.
This game was pretty damn good. Still holds up to this day. I remember a few things differently, however, or it may be my rust. When I first played it - no DLC or anything - I'd gap the A.I. pretty easily even in Extreme. Just put a C5.R Corvette on my hands and I'll dominate, and I played with the keyboard. Today, I am using that Xtra mod and let's just say Normal difficulty feels like Extreme. Not to mention I am stuck at Mount Panorama in the V8 Supercar series because the A.I. does not require braking while I do. And is not just rubber banding, it's slingshooting.
Grid and Dirt 2 made me feel like being at the track for the weekend. They got the ATMOSPHERE right. No matter how shiny the graphics got in modern games, those 2 got what racing was all about and no one was able to replicate.
They had the best crashes too
I played these as an 8 year old, the nostalgia is unreal.
Yes that's very true.
Grid and DiRT2 also have amazing race replays, I always liked to watch them
Yes!! Peak Codemasters. Shame about the dead matchmaking and saving in Dirt2 but I still fire it up and jam when I want to have *fun*
you forgot to add the "final lap" music when it goes balls to the wall hardcore
Absolutely. All musics in GRID 2008 are amazing to listen.
This was and still is, my favourite racing game of all time. 👍
1. NFS prostreet
2. Project Gotham Racing 4
3. Race Driver Grid
4. Grid 2
5. Project Gotham Racing 3
@@elimejia5749No wreckfest?
@@CLOYO well I haven't played it yet. But I'm in the middle of playing flatout ultimate carnage
Agreed but Most Wanted have special place in my heart.
Thanks!
Ravenwest was such a good gameplay dynamic, more racing games need a villain/rivalry dynamic. I love seeing that black livery like "oh it is on". Bully ahead on the first corner and keep them in the mirror. Make that rear bumper a mile wide
@RaspberryMeatsicle have you tried Gravel?
@P_D-px6iv I've heard great things, gotta check it out soon:)
@@P_D-px6ivGravel is like a mix of Motorstorm plus GRID I.
Being an arcade racing gamer and massive motosport enthusiast, I tried this game out during the pandemic as I had been told it was fantastic
To this day, it's still my favorite game of all time.
Plandemic*
@@artemperesada3454the grand final 1 on 1 battle against Ryan McKane also is very intense especially on EXTREME level.
I instantly clicked with this game when i got it on the 360.
Fluid and responsive feel. The music always got your heart pumping.
The more you listen to this game's soundtrack, the more you realize how incredible it is!
I also really like the PS1 and PS2 Gran Turismo replay modes; they've been a very consistent source for some great pictures :)
Used these especially to look around how great the damage system was and in every fatal crash trying to find where the whell gone :)
this game IS an undeniable masterpiece, literally no other game manages to get close to the feel racedriver: grid gives you, the music is unforgettable, the progression is so good that the only game that beats it is gt4, the physics are great, the races are genuinely fun and interesting and the variety is just wonderful. this game is not perfect, but it definitely gets close.
also modding can make the game EVEN better
"The only game that beats it is GT4"
Bruh.Did you even play GT4?
GT4 progresion is fucking broken and is awful.
It can be easily cheesed.
It takes like two hours just to get the national B license for a new player.
i pased gt4 up to 99,6% and tried to get all the cars and all version of all cars, i got more than 1250 car i think anly had two left, and one race.
but the feeling, the strees, the carrer, the racing feel is way better in grid
One of the best Codemasters games ever
I can certainly agree on that!
@@AlexBehemotCoco Hayashi also a massive fan of these Arcade Racing games.
19:50 The first version of the game's menu music is one of my absolute favourite pieces of original video game music, not just for a racing game but for any game in general. Nostalgic bliss.
i could have sworn this was a gran turismo soundtrack.
@@michaelavriecause its fuckin jazzy smooth n good
what i really like from this game is the sponsorship feature and the tv overlay hud man it work just like real motosport racing tv overlay when you're having battle with certain driver it doesn't move your position up or your opponent down until you can confirm the overtake that is detail that i never seen ever again on future racing game i played like every grid game and race driver is the most unique one
After seeing this i wish i have bought this game on Steam before it got delisted. Instead of paying resellers an exuberant amount of money for it
Just pirate it
Just pirate it. There is no way stopping you to play it if it got delisted
You can still get the key for it, I was able to do that a couple of years ago
Its on a certain site that holds lots of old media
You can probably find cd keys on places like G2A
Despite GRID being the first appearance of the EGO engine, technically the game engine started with DiRT 1.
I never understood the praise for the career mode. To me, it just feels like busy work. Fun busy work but I was never that immersed.
I really want to find one, as this game is _perfect_ for an arcade cabinet!
The destruction derbys were so fucking good. Used to play them for hours.
From watching developer insights and some of the images during the credits, the passion and enthusiasm for the game was visible everywhere :)
Also, I hope that it wasn’t too shocking to watch this video with my shader preset; although I can appreciate the yellow filter of the 2000s in a way, it’s something I wanted to change to make it look more contemporary and more appealing to viewers who did not grow up with games having this kind of filter, which in my opinion looks a bit out of place nowadays.
GRID (2008) is a classic. I mainly play racing sims, but man I had boat loads of fun in that game. One of the best racing games of all time.
One of the greatest racing games ever made. This video motivated me to try and play it again on my pc.
Fun times.
Grid race driver gave me so many memories and I finished the game
My dream Grid game is the progression and career of Grid 1, the handling physics of Autosport, and the vibe of Grid 2.
This game and Dirt 2 were my first played with a steering wheel. To this day I remember the sharp, proper force feedback Grid gave me. every jump, kerb, slip. All this with an old Driving Force GT. Good all times.
everything just *pops* the more 01 or 360 game videos i see, so much vibrant color!
This story fits exactly with my final remark for the game. It feels like the game can create these memorable moments so effortlessly!
Wojach is missing out to put Ryan Cooper as the real final boss
This game is by far my favorite racing game. The arcade physics. The drifting with the Asian guy talking to hype you up. The 24hr La Mans. The sponsors giving you bonuses. This game deserves a come back because it was already perfect.
The commentary was insanely good for the time. Especially the legendary line:
"Someone just spun out. I think it's Yuigi Imamura!
I think it's very similar to how Most Wanted's cop chatter provides a source of very useful (and sometimes vital) information. It's a very well-made and fleshed out mechanic in GRID.
So many great lines delivered so well. “Couple drivers connected behind you… nasty.”
GRID 1 was unbelievably good for that time, that menu music sure brings back awesome vibes.
Edit: Dude, you included the NFSW ambient aswell? Now the retro vibes are complete, WTH
Edit2: okay i mean i got to say i was heavily into GRID back in the day, day in day out, all the night i played it with a friend from the other side of the world, i dont know how many hours i have put into this, thousands! but seeing this, hearing this and remembering all of this, even if it was personally not a good time almost makes me tear up. They just don't make games like this anymore.
The NEFW music is something I will never forget and fits well with these kind of videos too!
It's simply a masterpiece. The handling feels bizarre and really weird when you first start playing but as soon as you get dialed in its just a total joy!
The detail in the games is totally missing in current gen games
What a game! The funniest part of the damage is San Francisco when you get suspension damage down the hills 😂
Thanks, safe to say that this game (alongside Gran Turismo) also got me into more serious sims!
Grid was and still is my favourite racing game. For some reason they hit the sweet spot with everything there
Fun fact, Ian Livingstone also composed some tracks for FM4 and FH5
Considering his musical expertise and diversity, it doesn’t surprise me at all!
@@DatWut Yep, GRID Reloaded was essentially GRID with the latest patch and all DLC; as far as I know, however, it was only released for consoles.
Probably the greatest game i've ever played
Even Todd Howard with his amazing creations of morrowind and oblivion etc making braindead content now... we were 100% spoiled man with amazing content back then.
ofc we want a vid on the music alone
its a no brainer question
I still play this game often, it doesn’t get old, like a fine one. This is my favorite racing game ever made.
Only issue with tue cockpit view is that your driver is staring at the speedometer and not out the windshield
That's something I also kinda noticed, although I feel like that was partially done to show off all the details they've added :)
i loved grid 1 back in the day there was nothing quiet like it. your video made me want to replay it with the xtra mod so thanks for that. ive watched your GT4 With Only CHEAP Used Cars too and your GT4 4 With Only Road-legal Cars video too and damn ur editing improved dramaticly so keep it up 👍
As a devoted racing fan (i'm huge sucker for gran turismo style games, but also overall track racing games) i consider GRID to be one of the pivotal titles for racing games, and pretty much a starting point for a new sub-genre.
Ooooohhhhhhhhh you just made me extremely happy with including the safehouse music from NFS World in this video
Too many people have either not heard of or forgotten it in the dust, but it's still plenty alive with the community servers
Love the fact that you've used bonus cars in your footages. DLC cars add more variety to the carlist.
Fuck it, man. What I'd give for racing games to be like this now-a-days.
Some of the codmasters devs worked on forza horizon. I thought that game was magical. Great music. Great selection of cars. Then they added The Eliminator and ruined the map. Grid, Dirt 2, and horizon on 360 ruled all. Now I'm just chasing the dragon.
the algorithm has chosen you dude, great video!
OG Grid was amazing i was blown away by it when it came out and playing online was also fun especially the drifting
Racing games tend to hold up better cuz the main stay is driving skill and graphics aren't necessarily important
I still have my PS3 and I only picked up this game a few years ago, it’s a great game indeed especially considering it’s from 2008! It also has Jeroen Bleekemolen in it who is my boss as I work at his karting centre in Amsterdam 😂 That kinda makes it even cooler haha
It actually has the full Spyker Squadron team in the game!
I just installed it on PC and at 4k ultra still looks so nice. Crazy because it's more than 15 year old now.
I should really find one of those arcades once…
One of my favorite racing games 🤩
Same here!
I was having so much fun driving with the assists off, but at some point it became borderline impossible to make turns with the fastest cars while the competition was doing it with no effort. So it kind put me off from as the assists make the game not as fun.
I was glad I eventually found out that the assists caused the unbearable understeer on some cars as it almost made me stop with the playthrough.
Man, I really enjoyed this game. Wish it was on PS4 but still a great racing game. Got you so immersed into it
Nice to see you doing so well! I used to play phantom forces with you back in 2016-17, was a member of your EpiCentre clan. Keep it going bro!
Grid was the first racing game I completed 100 percent. Took me ages to complete the last race.
Just tried this game for the first time, and my first impression on this... it's a great game.
YES! do make a video about GRID's music since each track goes balls to the wall hardcore at the final lap
I love Grid 2. The feeling of the game, the vibe and atmosphere weren't replicated in any other racing game I've played. Not even Grid Autosport.
Especially considering that Grid 2 was one of the very first dubbed games I've played (in my language)
Really sad that there's nothing like Race Driver Grid anymore, not even its sequels can compare.
Grid and Dirt 2 was prime time Codemasters
Amazing memories with this game and my friends then. Time goes too fast. Enjoy every moment
this was my only ps3 game for almlst 2 years, because hacking a ps3 wasn't in the sight of a 10yr old child (me)
i didn't knew any english, I've been playing for months without even knowing that thetr was a campaign, and it took months for me to beat the game
GRID is still my favorite racing game, drifting is amazing, the car destruction and sound design is still amazing to this day, the soundtrack is memorable, even tough it isn't playing the whole time i still remember it all of those years later
it's weird for me to say this but i have an emotional attachment to this racing game, all of the later entries are still good games but the 1st GRID still gets a place in my heart
It looks great. Not sure why some people prefer it darker blue. I'd mod the my team menu so that 'change name' was last on the menu, and 'Sponsor' was first. You can wreck a car instantly and be out of the race. Love it
such a well made review/ throwback!
29:50 ray kriger is the one of the Kings in 07 nfs
He's trash to be a king tbh.
I loved playing this game with my bro. Second video of yours I'm watching, and it's again about a fav game of mine, subscription earned! :D
From a full simrace career experience to a drift any car you want even racing them: The series
Damn this hit the spot. I remember having so much fun with this game, but pulling out my hair with the Formula events xD. Still, GRID has a special place in my heart among a few other games that I really appreciate to have been able to play.
This and Hot Pursuit 2010 are my favorite racing games of that gen. Sadly they don't make games like this anymore :(
The first F1 race, before you have your own car. Whatever they have playing feels like pure adrenaline.
As a Nijigasaki fan, GRID 1 from 2008 still is the best game in the entire GRID series thanks to its intensity of the gameplay in every single race.
