    Hey all, before I get comments saying, “but you said there isn't a greatest arcade racer of all time”, let me clarify:
    Admittedly, I wanted a catchy title for this video, and this was the best one I could come up with. I still stand by what I said in my fanboy video as there are too many different styles and variety for a ‘greatest arcade racer of all time’. Burnout Revenge is certainly my favorite though, and I really hope you all enjoy the video!

    Whenever I see the spectacular-looking cars of Burnout 3 and Revenge, it makes me miss when older games had entirely fictional car designs, like Split/Second and Motorstorm. Using 1:1 replicas of real-life cars but debadging them does not count. We gotta have more of original designs in arcade racing games again.

    My biggest issue with Burnout Revenge is the lack of a single event mode. It makes trying to find a specific event type on a specific track a real pain. Also since the cars aren't broken up into classes like in Burnout 3, it means once you beat the game you are basically stuck only using the top-tier vehicles (Burnout Paradise had the same problem). Burnout Revenge is still an amazing game, but it has a lot of small things I don't like that keeps it from being my favorite.

    • @dragnor6810
      @dragnor6810 2 месяца назад +2

      There is also that insane difficulty spike at the end of the career that makes the experience just painful, combined with the downgrade of the sound design and takedown cams from 3 and the overall jankiness of the game, i personally would consider it better than 3 if it wasn't for all those little things that just make the game less enjoyable

    soundtrack i find is something seriously underrated in games these days and people don't critique it much except fans of the racing genre cause we love a good soundtrack to hype us up while going at break neck speeds. i never played burnout revenge so i don't know the soundtrack but i loved the burnout 3 soundtrack with favorites like: give it up by midtown, broken promises by moments in grace, stay in shadow by finger eleven, breathing by yellowcard, memory by sugarcult, independance day by no motiv and just tonight by jimmy eat world.

    I think I’m one of the few people that like the 360 port, simply because I love all the additional bits after crashing. Also not playing my PS2 copy for years might’ve helped. But I can understand why people don’t like the 360 version. I’m sure we can all agree that Revenge is still an amazing game, no matter what version.

    Turning vehicles into projectiles with traffic checking was a really good idea for the time. It adds a new layer of gameplay while also keeping things fluid so players can still maintain their momentum. Also I love when games go all around the world.
    I prefer that over open world in some cases.

    • @GamerAlexVideos
      @GamerAlexVideos  2 месяца назад +3

      You just can't get that same level of environmental variety when you are restricted to one open world. It's a reason I much prefer close track racers instead, or how Midnight Club has smaller but multiple open world locations.

    • @scottthewaterwarrior
      @scottthewaterwarrior 2 месяца назад +1

      @@GamerAlexVideos The Midnight Club 1/2/3 method was perfect in my book, same with the earlier Driver games. That's not to say a singular open world can't have equal variety, GTA San Andreas, Just Cause 2, and to a lesser extent Burnout Paradise come to mind, but those are very much exceptions to the rule.

    Burnout Revenge is perhaps the most violent, intense racing game I've played thus far. I haven't experienced another one similar to it. Things never stop feeling chaotic, not even in crash mode where you're expected to be more strategic and cautious if you want to maximise your score.
    I really wish there was a single event mode. That's easily the biggest flaw. I'm also sad to have seen how much content was cut, but that doesn't take away from the awesome end result.
    I have played Revenge since the late 2000s and I can't get bored of it.

    I love this game man. I finished it multiple times on PS2, then Xbox 360 and recently PCSX2. This game improves on everything 3 had to offer in my opinion, and that one is considered by many as the goat. Oh, and the 360 version still looks really good imo (ignoring the bloom of course). Still, the definitive way of playing it is definitely PCSX2, right now it works flawlessly from the get go.

    With friends we started to play Revenge again recently and we started with the PS2 version that we pretty much completed (we have the 1st F1 car), then we decided to do the game but on 360 and oh boy... the physics differences are hardcore. The game just became harder and sometimes the AI is completely broken, they just drive backward when they're going too fastin races, something that NEVER happened on PS2. This version is just a lot more buggy but still fun tho, kinda like a passable hard mode. I'll say, the best verion to play is probably the PS2 version but on an emulator using HD texture pack that uses the 360 ones, then you kinda have the definitive version of the game.

    Revenge is the ultimate Burnout experience. Period. I would say it's my all time favorite game but I got to give it to Burnout 2. It's much simpler experiece compared to it but it's perfect on what is trying to do. Has the best 'brake to drift' handling and it was the game that really got me on the series.

      Burnout 2 also had manual transmission...
      Burnout Paradise was fine as the vehicles didn't even have real transmissions, but in 3 and Revenge the cars would sometimes fail to shift up for a few seconds drastically reducing your acceleration.

  • @MatthewDiLeva
    @MatthewDiLeva 3 месяца назад

    I enjoyed Revenge a lot when I was a kid, and it still remains my second favorite in the entire series.
    However, Takedown steals the show for me personally with how many more hours I spent on it as well as the insane amount of fun I have in it more than Revenge, especially Road Rage. It’s hard to explain, but I just overall prefer it the most.
    Edit: The vehicles are great in Revenge, but the ones in Takedown feel faster and handle smoother. Their sounds (mostly the Super Series) make the cars sound distinct from one another despite some sounds being reused and tweaked.
    And don’t even get me started on the flawless soundtrack (the one after My Chemical Romance doesn’t count shush), with it making me listen to two artists in particular quite a lot because of it. As someone who grew up with punk rock and heavy metal, Takedown’s soundtrack just sends me to another place.

    hand of blood (bullet for my valentine) (no other song fits this games grungy vibe as well as this and its just so badass when you are smashing traffic off the road)
    Fight (Unwritten Law) (the censored version sounds kinda weird tho id recommend listening to the original)
    Red Flag (Billy Talent)
    All The Rage (Funeral For A Friend)
    All-American Rejects (Top Of The World)

    100% agree with you about the 360 port. On top of the other issues, is the music direction thay really hurts. As you mentioned, it hurts the flow of it a LOT, especially during takedowns. I think Criterion was not satisfied with this as well, as this is not present in the portable games or Paradise.

    I beat Burnout 3 100%. It was a tough challenge, especially the signature takedowns, but I managed it. I wanted to do the same for Revenge, so I got the 360 version and right away, the contrast issues were killing me. The tracks were so hard to see, the shadows were way too dark. It led to many bogus failures in other words.
    Getting vertical takedowns for the challenges was next to impossible. Never mind the physics, it’s far too situational which made the game grindy.
    The straw that broke the camel’s back was the preview lap for White Mountain, the one where you drive the Criterion Racer GT. The PS2 version gives you some leeway for gold time, but the 360 version shortens the time limit making gold very, very difficult. And they did this for no reason. I couldn’t stand it anymore and quit the game for good. Then I see everyone online praising Burnout Revenge and saying it’s better than 3. I used to wonder how anybody can think this, but now it seems they were playing the better version.
    I actually got the PS2 version recently but have yet to give it a try. I’m playing NFS Underground right now, but maybe I’ll play Revenge next. Good video, btw!

    Meh. I gave Revenge a try a while back on the PS2, and I didn’t really enjoy my time with it.
    For one, I found it to be a little too easy to either spin out your car when attempting to drift, or get blindsided by incoming traffic coming around the corner with no way to escape.
    I get that the crashes are a major part of Burnout’s gameplay identity, but I feel like every game past Point of Impact (at least prior to Dominator and Paradise) was trying way too hard to make it a core experience of the gameplay, and often at the expense of making the basic driving feel satisfying.
    Speaking of crashes…another thing I wasn’t a fan of was how the Crash Mode is executed.
    For starters, instead of the simple “hold down the Gas to build up steam for the car’s launch” mechanic they had in the previous two games, they ditched it for what it is essentially a Golf or Bowling-style launch meter, where you double tap the Gas button at the right time to launch at maximum speed. I don’t get why this change was made, and I wish they hadn’t made it.
    More importantly though, there’s no way to control the camera either before or during a Crash Mode event. The most you get is a single flyover of the level before it snaps back to your car. And from that point on, it is glued to the back of the car at all times. This makes it really difficult to strategize and come up with the most effective way to rack up that Cost to State tally.
    (This issue becomes exponentially more frustrating when you get to more complicated junctions with multiple tiered roadways that outright require you to make your car jump between said roadways to ensure you rack up the best possible score.)
    Lastly, I also wasn’t the biggest fan of how they chose to implement Crashbreaker into the standard races.
    The cars having a Crashbreaker Force Rating that is the sole determinant of how effective using the Crashbreaker is for any given vehicle (and often making any cars that aren’t the Special Class cars obsolete to a certain extent) feels…for a lack of a better word…like an unnecessary complication. (And one that later titles like Dominator would simplify for the better.) On top of that, the devs also decided that some of the standard race events (particularly in the early hours) should just not let you use Crashbreaker, which to me feels frustrating.
    I get that they probably wanted us to prove we were capable of handling its destructive power *before* giving it to us, but it just ends up making the early hours more frustrating to get through.
    Moreover, it introduces yet another unnecessary complication that the game really doesn’t need or benefit from; by the time the player gets the Crashbreaker in the standard races, they’re likely already halfway through the game and will likely not have enough time to really learn how to maximize the Crashbreaker’s destructive potential, assuming they don’t just choose to ignore it altogether out of habit.
    With all of these complaints put together…I consider Revenge to be a mixed bag; a game with a lot of neat mechanics and a very appealing aesthetic that *can* be fun, but is often heavily bogged down by a handful of questionable design decisions, and a somewhat butchered execution that makes enjoying the whole package a difficult and often frustrating affair.

    everything from the e3 trailer to the game itself was stellar

    traffic checking is also to me what made it the best burnout in the franchise and it was really disheartening to see it reduced to only trucks in burnout paradise as i think it made burnout unique as traffic checking is something no other arcade racer really has and its why i dont really enjoy any burnout that isnt revenge besides burnout paradise

    I have to disagree with the sound design part, specifically for Burnout Revenge X360 version. Tbh the engine sound system is a complete downgrade to me, like why would Criterion just thought of it and approved by EA to just reuse Black Box NFS Engine sound files, specifically the gins sounds. They're all sounds the same (V10, V8) no matter which cars you chose. They don't really fit whatsoever compared to PS2, Xbox version. They also did the same mistake for Burnout Paradise too but I won't criticise for it any further. Only the improvements they did for X360 version is you've already mentioned: HQ Car models and textures.

    People may have 3 as their part of the greatest favorite, but for me Revenge is still take a spot, it has almost anything to make it "a real car carnage" Badass car design, gritty atmosphere and graphics (yeah screw for over yellow piss filtering in Xbox 360 version), banger soundtrack (Helicopter, Dance - Dance, Apply Some Pleasure is my top 3 of Revenge soundtrack), and of course the best features of all of the entire game a "Traffic Checking" where you can hit any civilian cars without wrecked as long as you don't do that in Head On position or hitting a bigger cars like Busses and "Crash breaker" if you being pissed with anything that make you hit and crashed lol just watch out for your nitrous lost if you missed the target
    One thing that made Burnout franchise has their own charm is a Impact Time sound effects when you crashing by hold the R1 button (RT button on Xbox) to slow down the crashing, where these games becoming a dark Horor games showing you a harrowing reality of car crashing (of course the whole Burnout series was inspired by Thril Drive) firstly introduce in Burnout 3 and it of course returned in revenge and guess what, the impact time is even darker and creepier compared to 3 considering the gritty atmosphere of the game as well

      The whole Burnout series was made by Criterion dude why you wondering that, it's just has a different publisher, the first two games published by Acclaim Entertainment, 3 to Paradise published by EA like we know now
