As a pastry chef from Sweden, I did not expect my Sunday evening being a rollercoaster from curiosity to anxiety to feeling overwhelmingly impressed in fifteen minutes. I would never ever put sugar paste on a Princess Cake - marzipan works just as well for modelling the rose - but other than that: great job guys!
GrebbChannel no, the order is actually correct. The sponge on top is to make it easier to cover the dome of cream in the marzipan. Usually the sponge layers are the same thickness though. And you take the top layer, baked side up - jam - bottom layer, baked side down - custard - cream - the middle layer (so you can't see the baked edge near the marzipan) - "crumb coat" of marzipan - marzipan. Thanks to putting the baked/caramelised edges closer to the jam, it gets the impression of not being baked at all. Loved this, my mum is from Sweden and I got a prinsesstårta for my 18th birthday. It is delicious and one of my favourite cakes. I remember when they did this on bake off and my mum got annoyed because most swedes know how hard it is to make and so do the sensible thing and buy one from a bakery. Fun fact: This cake was invented by Jenny Åkerström for the daughters of Prince Carl of Sweden and is named in their honour as they loved it so much.
As a Swede who is a keen baker and worked at a bakery where I saw my boss pump these out at a rate of one each 8 min, I have to say I’m pretty impressed! I mean they aren’t perfect but for a first time they are really not bad. Homemade marzipan is a real Pain to work with and it’s very easy to use too much dye. If I was served one of these homemade cakes at a party I’d be impressed.

Sweet *and* savory for maximum chaos!
Can I just mention how horrified I am at "savoury" trifle.
What is this???? The thanksgiving friends episode where Rachel makes the wrong trifle? I love it!!!!!! That is undoubtedly what will happen. There will be a layer of Shepherd's Pie in therr for sure!
This reminds me of the lovely technical from Great British Bake off.
I vote for Jamie. Even though Barry's sponge was thinner and looked closer to the actual cake
I agree on this one being a draw. Both did different things better or worse and I like that. I also have never preferred Jamie's decorations before so I totally see where Ebbers is coming from here. I think they both did amazingly well and I really want to see James and Ebbers do a cake battle next. It's only fair and it might soothe Jamie and Barry's souls (or, you know, egos) a bit.
Ebbers: "Who made the best Princess Cake?"
Me: "The person who baked the one you had at the start."
I'm just gonna say I like it better when you let them work together on these challenges. Love to see their teamwork, panicked as it is.
As a Swede, this was fantastic. Next up; Have the Chefs do it!
Jamie and Barry being made to do recipes from the bake off technical challenges is my favorite current thing ever
Just an fyi, classic princess cakes dont have jam. Opera cakes do though but they also have pink instead of green marzipan.
Wat?? Everytime ive bought a princess cake it has had jan?
@David Håkansson that's incorrect. Jam in princess cakes are a modern twist. Classically they do not have jam. So no, they in fact do not always have jam.
@@Zara2010gSm didnt say you cant buy them with jam in lol i said jam in princess cakes arent CLASSIC. Meaning jam in them are a modern twist. So if all the ones you've bought has had jam in them then you've only eaten ones with a modern twist and not the classic ones that do not contain jam
Also the third cake layer is a modern invention for lazy pastry chefs and bakery’s to get a smoother top. The original did the dome with only cream...
I have to agree with James. Barry's cake looks pretty good and his fondant rose is beautiful.
The inevitable moment James moves his hands over his mouth to stop himself from saying anything.
I share James amazement at the judging. I always thought these normals are very advanced after all these years, but this challenge really made them feel like normals again! I was so sure this was going to end up like the mille feuille but gosh the boys really pulled through in the end! I'm impressed with both!
As they both look like pretty swamp princesses, it's a draw from me as well 😂😂
I've watched so much sorted in the past 6 months that "crack your eggs, bake" is now hilarious to me
Yeess!! I'm one of the ones who have asked for this for years. It's my favourite desert ever!
🙌👏👌
Too bad about the result then 😂
I am (an American) in Sweden right now..and find the idea that Brits love Swedish Princess Cake fascinating in itself. And it looks so complicated. But...now I want to try making this. I hope I do half as good as the two normals. I am impressed!
I feel like Ben and James swapped personalities during the bake! Ben being snarky af and James offering helpful criticism.
This was so good because a lot of people are just convinced they aren't good cooks so they stop even trying. This shows the value of just giving it a go.
I agree, it's a tie. Congrats!
The face Jamie makes when he sees what’s under the cloche is hilarious, an immediate change from happy to absolute devo 😂
As a Swede this makes me so happy, prinsesstårta is the best cake ever!
I feel like I wanna go to Sweden just to taste some prinsesstårta.
Gott men överskattad tkr jag
You know what I appreciate about this? The fact that, while they did mess up their recipe, they DID both ended up with a wonderful end result. Just because not everything does not go your way does not mean that the end result will be a failiure.
PETITION TO SEE ‘Judgemental James’ as a Children’s Book aimed at fussy eaters. Someone in the comments on the previous video volunteered to do the Illustration and another person wrote a few lines.
i think this is the closest version of technical challenge on great british bake off but for normals that is out there. Love it.
I have always wanted to eat one of these!
Tea and Liquor I had it in Stockholm last autumn. It was everything I dreamed of and then some!!! I only like marzipan with Princess Cake and British Christmas Cake/ Loaf.
Here they are the perfect goto cake, have atleast 2-3 of em every year :D
'You made that perfectly clear, yes.' Love when Jamie sasses the chefs
I feel sorry for Ben some days, he seems like a dad who has to scold his kids on some of these and he just does not want to XD
But in all seriousness well done and im glad i clicked Subscribe back in 2018
I’ve never seen Barry take a challenge *this* seriously, I love it!
