@@lilithpluto Yes! And really, a cheese toasty is something that should be a little one dimensional anyway Red wine caramelized onions does sound brilliant tho.
Kush and Ebbers, like all great chefs, have an inner grandma who survived war times by (guerilla) gardening, reusing, stretching ingredients and preserving. That's at the core of a successful kitchen. It is also the reason why I think the guys should get a small lot (like an oversized allotment) in the country and do regular shows from there cooking and preserving what's in season and letting their inner grannies out.
Love how Kush stays totally calm for the salt disaster, quietly giving remedial instructions and going back to his own business. For someone who can be so chaotic and mischievous, he’s an absolute rock when needed.
I said it in a Video some time ago that Kush is a chaotic little gremlin when he wants but when the Normals need him hes their Mentor always helping but with a very sharp tongue.
I don’t think I’ll ever tire of watching Kush cook. His skill level is unbelievable, personality infectious and you can tell he truly loves what he does. I think I might have a man crush on Chef Kush.

Then the last member of the team has to make the dish as well with the information he received and in the end you compare how similar/different the dishes are. Kush "I spent 50p on this bag of flour, then on the weekend i went out with my truffle sniffing dog and manged to forage this black truffle, i found this for free so no cost added"
@@fluiddynamics389 the sourdough starter is fine, Kush could have easily made one from his costed bag of flour. The homegrown herbs probably should have some kind of nominal cost though, I'm shocked they haven't started charging like 10p per herb.
I love the way that when James left we were (rightly) gutted and them Kush just stepped up and is unbelievably good in front of the camera. He’s so good at describing why he is doing things, it’s brilliant.
Ugh!!! 13:50 got me right in the feels! ❤❤❤❤❤❤ A quintessential Sorted moment, you can critique each others' work and still absolutely love each other!
The fact that Kush made 8 of those is brilliant! Sometimes the budget battles go into just making 1 thing with the limit but I like the idea of trying to stretch it to go further to serve more than just one person.
Now I would love an addition to this format where the chef makes a version with the "unlimited" budget ingredients after the competiton portion to show what is possible with the ingredients the "normal" bought.
What blows me away most in these Budget challenges is how much the chefs can do with so little. Kush somehow made 8 Portions of solid looking and most likely good tasting food. Incredible. I will adapt that recipe for myself. My Kids love Grilled Cheese and i often have to stretch my Money thin and now i have the perfect recipe for when the time comes 😊
Sourdough starter from years ago. All i did to whip up this sourdough focaccia is buy some flower 😅 Look i love it, Kush wouldn't have had any money if he wanted any sort of bread pre-made and just some cheddar. The recipe for sourdough focaccia is cheap and easy too. Still a weird sight when that whole bread showed up out of no where for 50p 😂
The only thing Kush didn't do was put his herbs into "The Tupperware of Surprise" first. 😆 (Search the channel for "FISH AND CHIPS BUDGET BATTLE | Chef (£2.50 budget) VS Normal (Unlimited budget)" (8 Aug 2021), for anyone wondering where that line originates)
Maybe limiting things that include only what you can actually buy in a supermarket, yes I know things come from their garden or were made a year ago, but some of us dont even have a garden lol. Also maybe the normals could use the same ingredients the chef uses, but a version more expensive of that item, so for example if the chef is using a very cheap meat, the normal would get the best cut of meat you can get your hands on. Love the video!
Think a "Double" Trouble would be fun to see. Both Chef's got a "Unlimited Budget" but also got to make a "Five" Dollar meal at the same time, Two Normals got to pick out whose is whose alongside getting which one is the "Most expensive" one.
oh, I like this and I'll add a possible twist. It's a two dish meal (like grilled cheese and tomato soup) and the chefs draw straws/spin wheel, whatever, for which will be unlimited and which is 5 pound. Then the taster(s) picks where the money went for each pair of dishes. Could also do with time instead of money. One dish gets 10 min, the other gets 30 min or something.
After seeing kush help barry through the Saltening i want to see that as a series It starts with one or two dishes in peogress that have a common sort of mistake made Oversalted, overcooked, undercooked, etc etc
Wow. Loved this video. Kush's toastie even seemed achievable as well as affordable. Liked seeing what he did with the ingredients at that price point., while also giving Barry tips on how to recover from over-salting the onions, and providing examples of what he'd have done with a little more money to elevate it. I'd have liked to have seen what Barry could have done without an unlimited budget, so he couldn't just throw everything at it, but then him not getting the time to plan showed in that way. I liked Mike suggesting something pickled for the sandwich to brighten it up, which was a great tip for counteracting the fact. And best of all was Jamie's judging, where he judged Kush's sandwich as one-dimensional for all that it was good, managed to pick out Barry's sandwich, explained how he knew it was Barry's, and then went back for another bite of Barry's sandwich after he'd tasted Kush's. I liked this challenge, it was the perfect blend of cooking knowledge, cooking something achievable, good tips, and fun chaos. I would like to see more low-budget challenges,
It would be cool if the chef in these videos got a moment to talk about what they would have done with unlimited budget, or what they would change in the normals dish to level it up
Not even half way through the video yet & just needed to say, since I (unfortunately), only discovered your channel about a month ago, I am completely hooked! Such great & uplifting content & entertainment can literally watch for hours! Thank you & sending love from South Africa x
This was always my favorite series from ya'll. I liked the change to a blind taste test at the end. I also liked keeping with a really simple dish. To me, that was always the most interesting way to do it.
Oh, this was so good. Made my day and I laughed so hard when Jamie correctly guessed. They all know each other so well. I am jealous ! Well done boys. Thank you for this treat. Hugs. 🤗💜👍
I love this format. I'd love to see more. I'd also like to see a slightly higher budget for the chef while the normal still gets unlimited budget (but no ingredients prepared in advance). Make the normals do the work to craft something amazing given an unlimited budget. Then have the chef make the same meal at a budget price with some cheffy influence.
Work ran late and just got to watch this- omg!!!!!!!! how good do those sandwiches look, I could really go for one or both, right now! Every cheese lover's foodgasm! And also, love how quickly Kush has learnt the art of subtly emphasising the Sorted channel core messages and products- rising food costs, making little go a long way, the bread course. He's a natural in more ways than one- wonderfully encouraging teacher, maverick chef who can break complexities down for the audiences at home and also a sincere spokesman for Sorted without doing any on-the- nose, cheesy (pun intended) plugs. 👍👍👍👍
I am 2mins in and already happy because Kush has picked very similar ingredients to what I would put on my own grilled cheese. Though I go saurkraut and grain mustard instead of the home made pickles and dijon mustard. Delicious way to make a cheese toastie. Way better than without.
This video was great! Love watching Kush or Ben cooking in parallel with a normal, being supportive and offering up solutions & suggestions; as very much a normal myself it feels like I too am getting that apprenticeship. Barry has definitely earned the sous apron, and watching his thought process makes it feel accessible for myself. All of these chef & normal comparison videos are super inspiring - Well done, more of these please! 😁
I love that when Ebbers goes to the herb garden, everyone calls foul and mocks him for it and says he's cheating. Kush does that exact same thing... he's a genius! 😂😂
Thus is a great evolution of the unlimited budget! If I were to add a thing to it, it would be to see what the chef would do with the same unlimited budget (maybe use up the leftovers)?
@goldenghostinc I'm not assuming anything, I'm just pointing out that it wasn't just "free herbs" but other free ingredients. The reality is a pack of seeds might cost £1, even though you're only using one for a plant, a bag of compost as well and then some plant pots as well. It still is am investment of money regardless of how it gets split later
What a sensational video! The comparison between the grilled cheese with a £5 budget and the one with an unlimited budget was super interesting and fun. I loved seeing how different budgets can impact the recipe. Congratulations on the creative analysis and engaging presentation. I'm looking forward to trying the tips from both methods! 🥰🥰☺☺
Herbs, Sour Dough Starter, and let us not forget the Lacto Fermented Jalapenos. I think we finally know where Ben picked up the "If you grow it it's practically free." bit. Answer Kush.
I would suggest whoever gets the unlimited (or higher budget) gets half the time of the low end budget. I do love the chef vs normal formats. Maybe a guest chef or guest normal to mix it up. Ya'll know each others cooking styles too well.
Can we have a show about the things that the chefs and the normals make weekly as food prep. I was intrigued when Kush mentioned his weekly sourdough focaccia. Thanks.
The fermented pickled jalapenos would probably cost £10 by themselves -- counted as 'free' because they came from a previous review video, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't no-budget. With that it's about £2 per sandwich, before counting free herbs and sourdough.
Here we gooo best part(s) of the week😊 And after watching turns out to be one of the most interesting experiments! Mad props to Jamie for his analysis! "Normal" my ass!
Definitely like to see more of the challenges in line with the older chef on a budget vs normal without. I think those were really interesting videos from the James era and also ones which were really good in getting some good discussion about where to put your money when trying to improve as home cooks/expand horizons. The one thing I would say with those is that if you're going to do that approach, then I think you need to be very clear and consistent both in terms of the rules (i.e. how many portions both people need to create), and indeed what the scoring criteria is at the end (i.e. whether it's just a clear 'tastes better' approach or whether its a 'worth the cost/technique vs spend' dynamic). Equally, I think there does need to be a bit of an upper limit for the more expensive option because it's more fun to watch the normals really push themselves to get the best out of ingredients as opposed to just chucking everything at the solution and ending up spending £100+ on four portions just for the sake of it.
It would quite nice to get a grilled cheese right now, from either Kush or Barry. I bet, both of them would be delicious, but probably a bit different. In a dream world, Sorted home delivery would be perfect ;-). And yep, I am being silly, because I feel like it, and because tommorow is a holiday here in Switzerland (our national day).
i would have loved it if one of them had just said F it and went a good white bread - Italian bread - a good salty butter, and a couple slices of American cheese . just plain and simple - i have seen so many chiefs make supper fancy grilled cheese and get roasted by more senior chiefs roast them for going too far and ruining a classic sandwich.
Kush's ingredients had quite a few caveats that would not apply or be readily available to most 'normal' home cooks on a limited budget. Its 'free' or 'costs' nothing because he made it x amount of time ago seems not entirely in the spirit, I would have loved to see how Kush would have tackled this without things like a home made sour dough starter he had etc!
Sour dough starter is made from flour and water and wild yeast. They will live forever if properly cared for. He paid for the flour for the bread. Water, salt, pepper, and oil are always 'free' in these - so what exactly do you want him to pay for? 1/4 of flour used in the starter? He'd just reduce the flour in the focaccia. Ben has used allotment herbs and produce for 14 years. This is the jalapenos and herbs are home grown. They may not be entirely free, but per seed they practically are - plus he made eight sammies and not just one.
Right, but then he did also make 8 of them, technically bringing the total per sandwich down to around 63p. I do agree it's a little bit of an Ebbers move, though.
First off amazing as always.... the Kush full Ebbers moment was great. As a thought to another vid I dont know if you have ever done this but give one person unlimited time and another person a crazy time constraint for a dish that takes prep time. Seeing one side use all the different steps to get something amazing out and another person trying to hack their way threw it would be fun. As a twist have the chefs cook and the normals guess.
I'd love to see the boys do this format but rather than a limited budget, the chefs have to cook a dish with some dietary requirements that mean they have to pivot from standard recipes. I reckon it would be fun to watch and i'd learn heaps!
One of the things that always gets me about these is all the "free" ingredients. Oil is not free. Herbs are not free. Most people didn't grow and ferment peppers last year. Just up the budget and don't say that all these other things are free when you have to buy them too.
You buy a herb once and keep it alive for years, use it hundreds of times. It comes up to a cost of like 0.00001 pence per use. It's basically free, although not literally free. Criticizing considering oil or salt as a free ingredient is a more valid point, but it also would make for a boring video if Kush had to use his £5 on a £5 bottle of oil...
@@user-hn9oy9jt6w Literally 0.00001% of the population has lactose fermented peppers at home for free. Keeping plants alive and healthy indefinitely takes nutrients and soil and is not free. Make focaccia in an oven is not just "flour" and is not free. this is an asinine take.
I've loved watching the growth of the normals, though I daresay they have surpassed many that call themselves chefs. Good thing your chefs are true masters of their craft.
Because I commented when I was a bit disappointed, it's only fair that I comment now that I'm completely happy: a few weeks ago, I mentioned that Kush sometimes sounded a bit arrogant, which didn't really match the vibe. Well, lately he has been soooo much more fun to watch!! It's so nice to hear his knowledge coming in to help the guys - and us, because these are mistakes we would all make.. Still funny, still entertaining but soooo much nicer and a better fit! 🥰 Well done! Such a pleasure to watch!
I can understand the herbs... but the sour dough starter rides a gray line of cheating to me... Bread is an important part and getting that free feels like a big advantage no matter what side you are on.
Simplest grilled cheese that I make and love: sourdough or wheat bread, grilled in butter, with provolone and tomato slices. Perfection. I'd love to see more of these! Maybe with soup, as well?
Finally, a food channel makes actual grilled cheese sandwiches. Almost all others try to fancy it up by adding meat to it, and as soon as you add meat, it is a melt instead of a grilled cheese.
You can see Kush dying inside a little when Jamie says his toastie is one dimensional. I bet he's thinking "I smoked some herbs for this, you peasant!"

I would have used white bread, American cheese and butter. For £5 I could have made 16 delicious full size proper grilled cheese sandwiches.
@@Alexand3ry Didn't he say it was something he made for a video a while back? If so, markedly less than £10. Or I might've misheard.
@Finwolven He said they were made like a year ago. So id definitely say it counts as "free"
I love how even though it is a “competition” Kush is still being super helpful!
GRilled cheese and caramelized onion are a perfect pairing because of french onion soup!
Kush is such a great teacher. Never miss a moment to give a lesson, never make them feel bad about a mistake.
Here we gooo best part(s) of the week😊
And after watching turns out to be one of the most interesting experiments!
Love kush immediately problem solving the salt incident 😄
I loved this format! I hope we get to see more like it :)
Sorted home delivery would be the dream!
Wow…Kush as always fabulous technique…….great job both fellows
i would have loved it if one of them had just said F it and went a good white bread - Italian bread - a good salty butter, and a couple slices of American cheese . just plain and simple - i have seen so many chiefs make supper fancy grilled cheese and get roasted by more senior chiefs roast them for going too far and ruining a classic sandwich.
Yeah, because that would make such an interesting video if they just did white bread and American cheese...
that's pretty much what jamie did in their ultimate grilled cheese battle years ago
Just to let you know, I've learned a tremendous amount from your show, kush is an excellent teacher.
So Kush can get away with the pickles and the herbs "for free", but Ebbers gets heat for it every time
I'd love to see the boys do this format but rather than a limited budget, the chefs have to cook a dish with some dietary requirements that mean they have to pivot from standard recipes.
I 100% agree. A lot of people don't even have the space to grow things like that. Perhaps one or two Herbs in a Windows sill at most
You buy a herb once and keep it alive for years, use it hundreds of times.
43 seconds. Get in!!!!
We want to see Bobotie from South Africa 🇿🇦 🙏 Ben will love it, it has bay leaves in it.
I love South Africa and I am a huge fan of Bobotie. However, the Bobotie recipe I would like to see, should be vegetarian. Sorry.
This is an amazing twist on the little budget, unlimited budget videos. ❤
Grilled cheese!!! One of the best sandwiches ever!
Sooooo good 🤤
I think Jamie hit it spot on, when all of us normal try to think chefy, we think higher end first and optimize with what you have already, last.
Given the way Kush stocked his kitchen when given £100, I expect him to do very well.
Edit: I was right. I _need_ that sandwich, Kush!
yes yes more of these episodes! loved the vibe of this one :D
So happy to see the return of this format, just not sure if the blindfold element works - bring it back as it was as a chef V chef !!
Loved this format boys!! Make more for sure!
Kush is doing an Ebbers budget where lots of stuff are free.
they are only herbs loads of people keep fresh herbs or if not 95% of people have dry herbs they are a store cupboard ingredient
As of typing this we are in Fall, so it's the best time for a Chef vs Normal, High vs Low budget Chili battle.
Must be a different definition for grilled cheese over the pond.
You know America didn't invent the "grilled cheese" don't you!? But yeah, different places do it different ways. 😁 "Vive la différence"
So happy Kush is such a regular, he's so good!! ❤❤❤
Honestly, I'd rather you just had a £10 budget with all the ingredients priced in, rather than a £5 budget with half the stuff being "free".
Especially herbs. Most people don't have a herb garden. And fresh herbs are expensive.
Oil would take up 80% of the budget if it was bought where I am 😂 I think this way is more practical
Youll get over it
Should make an asmr reel of Kush prepping ingredients
