'Secret Santa' Challenge (Ben, Barry, Mike and Jamie) : Draw names from a hat, and set a certain budget. Everyone goes out and spends as close as they can to the budget on ingredients, gives it to the person whose name they drew, and everyone has to make something with the ingredients provided.
Unless they add some kind of condition. Like, if it seems like anyone tries to deliberately sabotage (as judged by James, maybe?), they have to use the things they bought.
I love the camaraderie in this ultimate battle. It feels less like a war against each other, and more like a challenge to be defeated. Probably my favorite ultimate battle ever.
Barry gets zero brownie points because they expect better from him. Jamie gets all the brownie points because they're just happy he finished the recipe.
mike's attitude of "someones got to do it. if we all do the same thing then theres a chance no one will succeed. If i take the risk, then if everyone else fails i will succeed and if everyoene else succeeds i will fail, therefore this is the most reasonable route to ensure at least someone succeeds" reflects deep wisdom, maturity, and kindness. The world would be a better place with more people like him
Jamie - "shall we see what it's done to the brownie leader board" Barry - "do we have to..." Me - "oh come on it can't be that bad" *sees Barry only has 3.5 point* "Oh it can be that bad"
when Jamie and Barry were talking about their plans for the recipe and then Mike goes "I'm screwed" it cracked me up so much that's how I feel about practically everything
I love how they all laughed at Barry and he was the only one who bloomed the gelatin correctly. It's supposed to form a solid lump like that and then be re dissolved
I think it is fair that Jamie got to start over with new ingredients. He didn't sabotage the others and because it was a timed battle he pretty much punished himself already - we all know Jamie and speedy cooking aren't really a match made in heaven (should've gone for that slow-cooked moose roast instead)
As a baker, I think Mike did a fantastic job. Beautiful layers, quite even. It looked like it tasted good. It's always stressful going any baked good on a time crunch. Good for all of you!
Jamie:"I cooked a cake, you cooked a cake, you cooked a cake, and you too cooked a cake*points to Ben* and you cooked no cake" Ben "I did no cake today but I did just ate ate 4" *holding up 4 fingers* Was beyond adorable and now I'm totally jealous as I too want to eat 4 cakes too lol
Jamie's looked like a wreck, the layers were like sliding off and yet he got a brownie point, the middle layer was twice the size of the others. Not fair, it should have been Barry!
Maria Davoodian The point was that Jamie actually had layers. That's kind of important considering it was a triple LAYER cake. Barry's layers were all over the place.
Its been two years since this video was posted since then I have made this twice once for Thanksgiving dessert and once for Christmas dessert both times everyone was amazed by it, this is one of my favorite recipes I have made from you guys.
If you see this. Do you have the full recipe written down? I lost mine and they have removed the recipe. I only have the measurements but I don't have things like heat of the oven and such
@@Eezboy Step 1: Preheat over to 150C/~300F Step 2: Combine water and both sugars in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat and dissolve sugars. cube butter and add to the pan, let it melt. chop up the chocolate and add to a mixing bowl. pour over hot sugar mix leave for 5 minutes, then stir until everything is combined. leave to cool while you beat the eggs in another bowl, pour into chocolate while mixing, and stir until smooth. Step 3: line a 22cm/~9in springform with greaseproof paper, then wrap the base in foil. pour in the mixture, place tin into a roasting tray filled halfway with water. cook in oven for 30 minutes, then cool in the fridge for a few hours until set. Step 4: for the middle layer, bloom the gelatine in the water for 5 minutes. pour 240ml/~8oz. double cream into a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer. chop dark chocolate and tip into a mixing bowl. Chop the white chocolate and tip into another mixing bowl. remove cream from heat and stir in the gelatine. divide the hot cream between the two bowls of chocolate and let it sit for a few minutes before stirring everything together. Step 5: in another bowl, whisk the reremaining 480ml/~16oz. of cream to soft peaks. Divide a third of the cream between the two chocolate mixtures and fold it in. Divide the remaining cream between the two chocolate mixtures and carefully fold it in. When ready to serve remove the cake from the fridge and grate over the dark chocolate.
Kudos to all 3 guys for providing something edible and presentable at the end. Bonus point should be awarded to Jamie for his "chocolate starfish" garnish, lol!
Fun fact: it's WAY more common to used powdered gelatin in America. The whole time I was like "how the hell do they not know how to bloom powdered gelatin." Plus they all laughed at Barry and he did it right, it's supposed to form a solid lump.
to my knowledge, it should be like applesauce. It does go solid if you leave it but it isn't supposed to be solid. I don't have experience if it works solid but it seemed to work for him (for reference Jamie did it correctly)
At the end of this series you should do a tour or something called cake me around the world were you make different types of desserts and cakes from around the world
You should have all of the boys take turns working together on one dish. Mike works for 30 minutes, then Jamie comes in and works for 30 minutes, and then Barry finishes the recipe. But make it so they can't talk to each other about what they were doing during their time.
Love the attempt at a new contest format, but I really liked the creativity challenges :( But I am glad to see that the boys cane so far in terms of theor skill repertoire. :)
Different battle suggestion. Ingrediants, no recipe, specific equipment to make a dish with. Randomly assign everyone with a critique. Smoothest dish, most difficult technique, best finished looking plate, most delicious outcome. Person with the most points at the end wins. If there is a tie. Whom ever is not in the tie judges a dessert round! Good luck! Also, that was a wonderful episode! Thank you!
So Jamie got a brownie point even though he made a mistake and was allowed to start over with fresh ingredients. But Barry who didn't make a mistake got none, because Jamie removed the baking paper? Seems questionable at best.
Jamie's cake was a complete mess with layers that were a different texture and totally different sizes and which were sliding over each other. That's the definition of unacceptable, not leaving a bit of paper on the cake, which Mike did as well and he won.

I'm noticing a bit of a pattern in these ultimate battles. Mike goes for recipes that require good technique, Barry tries for artistic yet straightforward, and James just goes nuts and hopes for the best.
It's Time for the technical bake in Bake Off, I haven't laughed in a while. James and Ben are like Paul and Mary. Mike definitely wins, because accuracy never fails. Awesome Mousse cake, consider it another subject to make.
I made it with gelatin leaves, 6, and it was amazing. But the cake is very very very heavy. The discription says: serves 8 people, but i feed 20 people with it.... Very nice!
Is it just me, or is the audio bad? Anyway, make more challenges like this. It's fun seeing them follow baking instructions and ruining themselves. 1:13 Jamie says he's going to read the recipe twice. A few minutes later at 1:55, Jamie: OH NO. Also Jamie at 11:12 looked like he has committed a crime. And what was that deformed star at the end? X'D Mike is the clear winner here. :'D
barry and jamie: '*gibberish to try and make it seem like they actually know what they're doing*'
mike: 'i'm screwed'
New Battle Idea :
-same Ingredients
-no Recipe
-different Results :D
Longer HD that sounds like a good idea!
Longer HD ooh yes
Longer HD this is brilliant
Longer HD Very interesting!
This was honestly what I expected when they introduced the idea at first
My word, Mike's cake looks increadibly impressive and professional. He can't be on Level Up now, he's not normal any more. HE'S A BEAST!!!
That's such a good idea, it can be modelled by the MasterChef secret box! only obviously everyone gets different ingredients
Brilliant idea-- Except, for some reason, I am already picturing Jamie sabotaging someone by buying the worst ingredients.
Unless they add some kind of condition. Like, if it seems like anyone tries to deliberately sabotage (as judged by James, maybe?), they have to use the things they bought.
Great idea!! Or if they buy the ingredients and then draw names where they could possibly get their own name. That could prevent sabotage, as well!
Oh, that's even better! No one wants to potentially sabotage themselves. xD
Mike's looks like something you could buy in a professional cake shop, I would definitely make it like Mike's!
Three people trying to cook separately in that little kitchen is torture.
LordZordon1 it's a bit of a squeeze!
I love the camaraderie in this ultimate battle. It feels less like a war against each other, and more like a challenge to be defeated. Probably my favorite ultimate battle ever.
It's like the technical challenge on bake off 😂
alicia barnett they even had the whole "what it should look like" conversation
alicia barnett and the other battles are like the signature challenge 😂
alicia barnett James makes a wonderful Mary Berry
alicia barnett It is and I love it
Yuuuup. They said bake off style in the first video of the week. It would have been better if they'd gone full out and tasted blind!
Barry gets zero brownie points because they expect better from him. Jamie gets all the brownie points because they're just happy he finished the recipe.
Meaning Jamie gets the pity points, he sure as shit didn't display much skill xD
Mike's watermarbling👌
i just realised it's feathering.. ok..
Hanaa I see you've been watching too much simplynailogical 😂
I love how many videos I watch mention Simply Nailogical.
MiFFiL the funny thing is, I barely watch her anymore.
That's sad.. I actually live in the same city as her.
Just when I think James can't get more attractive, he whips out a triple chocolate mousse cake.
So proud of Mike! He's gotten so much better since the first battle ... :D
Rowena Selvarasan. I want to eat mike dessert. Look professional.

Barry - "do we have to..."
Me - "oh come on it can't be that bad"
*sees Barry only has 3.5 point*
"Oh it can be that bad"
Mike's technical skills have gotten sooo much better through the years. He knows what he's doing now. His cake was flawless!
when Jamie and Barry were talking about their plans for the recipe and then Mike goes "I'm screwed" it cracked me up so much that's how I feel about practically everything
6:30 he wants to measure it equally by weighing it, whilst using a Pyrex measuring jug with measurements down the side..
SavingLiam Did he do that? I thought he was using the measuring jug, well, to *MEASURE* with 😂
Kristen S you can always use a silicone spatula can't you? to scrape it out. I don't have any idea needless to say 😂
He wanted to be extra sure it is true even. :)
He probably checked both the weight and the lines.
I love how they all laughed at Barry and he was the only one who bloomed the gelatin correctly. It's supposed to form a solid lump like that and then be re dissolved
Reposting your comment multiple times I see.
I think Barry keeps getting screwed over! Seriously questioning your guys judgement sometimes... And this isn't bias, I love all of them. Poor Barry.
Poor2Happy Shhhh.... he thinks so too... but don't let him know you're on his side! :p
Baz is so far behind in brownie points, and I don't understand why? Like he didn't get a brownie point for the cupcake recipe way back when.
Poor2Happy He did very well in the original battles before they started the brownie point system. what gives????
When he said "Chocolate Starfish" it made me think of one song.
One immortal song.
From Conker's Bad Fur Day.
the happiness on Mike's face.😁😁
It's like the technical round of bake-off. Its so fun.
Mike's presentation is always amazing.
And I'm not just talking about the food. ;)
Mike can actually cook, so gets brownie points. Jaime keeps being awarded sympathy brownie points. Poor Barry is in the middle and gets nothing.
Middle child syndrome?
I think it is fair that Jamie got to start over with new ingredients. He didn't sabotage the others and because it was a timed battle he pretty much punished himself already - we all know Jamie and speedy cooking aren't really a match made in heaven (should've gone for that slow-cooked moose roast instead)
I loved to see them dispairing and collaborating together! It was a really fun twist for the battles. And good god Mike did a really good one

I actually like this a lot. It shows you how difficult the recipe really is for an amateur and kinda lets you know what mistakes to avoid
at 1:14 I relate to that on a personal level.
Really nice recipes but it’s hard to combine. Time consuming but really nice to do if you have the time! Well done guys!
13:09 Oh Ben. "Chocolate starfish." Perfect.
Mike saying "I'm screwed" was me at the start of all my a level exams... I'm screwed
I loved this! I love how mike starts off by saying Im screwed and then ends up with the first brownie point!
mike looks so good and barry’s hair omg! I’ve been blessed in this video
Anyone else want the original intro back?

Mike's cake was IMPECCABLE. I knew he was gonna do a great job lmao
He also had to replace his ingredients, that would disqualify him on bake off
replacing ingredients and remaking things happened all the time on bake off
not during a technical
The Pun of Harts Well that's irrelevant because this isn't bake off.

love the feathering on mike's cake!

push down

No it's supposed to be smooth and not lumpy or it will not have the desired effect.
Tom Carver never had a problem myself, always redissolved smoothly once it went back in
Here in the UK leaf gelatin is more common, so mostly people know the soak it in water, and squeeze it out method.
to my knowledge, it should be like applesauce. It does go solid if you leave it but it isn't supposed to be solid. I don't have experience if it works solid but it seemed to work for him (for reference Jamie did it correctly)
I love that they weren't even really competing most of the time, because they were so confused they needed each other's help
The creativity and randomness is the best part of the battles
Recipe link in the description doesnt work anymore

Barry left some of the cartouche on the cake, which is unacceptable.
