Louis Armstrong singing Hello Dolly knocked some unknown British upstarts out of the Billboard Top 100 Pop Charts. Those upstarts were The Beatles. That is how good Louis Armstrong is.
He was shocked and delighted when it turned out to be his greatest commercial hit, and it kept him financially secure for the rest of his life. I think they nailed it on the first take. At first flance, Louis thought it was a good song, but nothing special. It fit him like a glove, as if it had been written just for him. The musical had just opened, so the public knew it vaguely, but he injected it into our national DNA forever. As Barbra said, 'Thank you Louis'.

The world had moved on. Too many musicals over the previous 40 years. They wanted gritty, counter-culture fare. Which is fine and all. New Hollywood made plenty of that, a lot of it really good. But big, lavish, gorgeous, earnest, expensive musicals like this, just couldn't appeal to the masses forever. All trends change. But they did make this movie while they still could. And despite not having Carol Channing in the lead, it still turned out fantastically. And while a financial failure, it is still immortal, and can be enjoyed by generation after generation from now on. It's a minor miracle it just made it under the wire. It's a win, for the musical and all those who love it.
@@andrewklang809 True both Julie Andrews and Barbra Streisand's movie musicals flopped in the late 60s up to 1970. They were the lucky ones that was given the chance to star in movies which were very rare to theater actress.
The problem was that they didn't rethink it for the screen. And Gene Kelly had no idea how to direct a film. The play, 'The Matchmaker;' has much more depth to it, but the film ignored what it's really about, which is the plight of a middle aged woman who finds herself in serious financial strife after her husband has died. She's been so busy matching up everyone around her, that she fails to see her own situation is serious, and she needs to be married to survive. None of that in the film, so no tension. You can still have great production numbers and all the trimmings - but without some dramatic substance, you've just got a huge Easter egg which has nothing inside it.
Contrarly to popular opinion I think no one comes close to Barbra’s interpretation of this song. She brought something singularly personal and original to the song.
@@paddotk interpretation is the singular quality that an actor/actress or singer brings to written material. It’s often been said Carol Channing’s version is the definitive one. The part wasn’t written for Barbra. It was originally written for Ethel Merman who turned it down and became Carol Channing’s signature role on stage. Therefore Barbra was always criticized for being too young for the part, and for being miscast for the cinema version. Press said she was not sharp enough in her portrayal, sometimes channeling May West and that Carole Channing was robbed of playing her signature role in the picture version etc…recently Patty Lupone confirmed that general conception by commenting that Barbra was too young….I in spite of all that think her performance was great.
@@alexd1121 What I meant was, the song was written for this musical, meant to be sung that way, I assume. Regardless of which actress would be the one filling that part.
Barbra Streisand is acting and singing with Lois Armstrong...! Considering that in the real life they were living 1969 -- he was a fantastic outstanding black musician and singer. She was an outstanding Jewish singer. You could feel the intimacy, irony, humor, companionship, "espanto" (more or less the same of astonishment) friendship and a fascinating interplay in terms of gestures and mutual facial expressions while they are singing together -- so fusing the real time of their real persons with the not so distant epoch of that theatrical representation and screenplay. There is a simply magic interplay here. Moreover the voice of Barbra was in my view superior and adequately more emotional to the context than the sadder and "operistic" voice of Carol Channing. If you analyse the entire set up you could easily claim that Barbra has the best filmed Dolly performance to this day. Brasil Sorry for my English I use no Google translating 😂
Barbra’s gold lame gown showcased her hourglass figure, so popular in the 1880’s to perfection. Her voice and acting in this production are incomparable. Louis Armstrong what can be said? Marvelous!
The gown alone weighed 40 pounds and cost $8,000 to make. The original design included a 2-1/2-foot train, which was removed after she and other dancers tripped over it during rehearsals. The train is visible when Streisand starts down the stairs, then disappears.
She stands shorter than the orchestra, but her voice and stage presence is so much bigger than all of them put together. An amazing performance … I remember seeing it with my mum when I was a kid and I was absolutely enchanted.
I love the fact how sweet she is to him in a time when racism was running rampant. I was told one of the dancers hit him while dancing...that part got cut of course
I played Cornelius Hackle in high school in this musical. We had phenomenally talented people. My friends were amazing as the leads in this. That was 1988. I will forever love this
Sorry I can't stop watching this masterpiece. I wish I was there back then. Probably, I wouldn't appreciate it as much as today. Thanks Satchmo, Mrs. Streinsand, the band, dancers, and everyone else for this realization. Again, it was beautifully done.
The greatest movie finale of all time ! Pure GENIUS ! Louis and Barbra, the music, the set, the choreography, the colors. I thank God for Barbra's voice, it is medicinal in the way it can inspire and dispell a down spirit.
I used to watch this with my mother so often as a child. Watching it now makes me shed a tear for those wonderful days, this is truly an amazing performance.
1969 was a really crazy year back then and that’s how they were able to put a Famous Jazz singer and a Broadway star together in one movie together to make this a part of history. Because the world was changing and everything with the Civil rights movement, Rock and roll and the Vietnam war. Because the sixties were tremendous time since Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, The Kennedy’s, LBJ and Nixon.
