    Screen legends Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford make movie magic as the captivating star-crossed lovers, Hubbell Gardiner and Katie Morosky. Theirs is a classic love story sparked by the attraction of opposites, played out against the backdrop of American life during times of foreign war, domestic prosperity and McCarthy-era paranoia in Hollywood.

    Katie always thought Hubble wasted his talents, and you can see it in her eyes when he says he's writing for Television. She's smiling but disappointed. It is a great movie, but in the end, he abandoned his child. He can't come for a drink and face the daughter he abandoned. "How is she?" which is code for "How is she. I don't know because I abandoned her." "Is he a good father since I am a crappy one?!?!" He wants the easy life. The pretty girl who doesn't say a word. The easy job. No trouble, no loses, no principles. And Katie is willing to fight for everything. She's strong, he's weak and that's why it didn't work out.

    Streisand completely breaks your heart in this scene. She is so honest and real and exposed that is almost difficult to watch. How on earth she did not receive the Academy award that year is beyond me.

    • @paulvargas2609
      @paulvargas2609 Год назад +24

      So so correct!!! The long shot of Glenda Jackson won for "A Touch of Class " won!!! Barbra was totally robbed of that Oscar!!! Politics as usual. The Academy did not want to award her more awards.

    • @steveb1164
      @steveb1164 Год назад +15

      Two theories exist to explain her loss: 1). Her unpopularity in Hollywood at the time; and 2). The deletion of scenes--esp. the political ones--undermined her chances.

    • @emmalancaster2013
      @emmalancaster2013 Год назад +29

      Hollywood hates her, because she refuses to conform. She “acts too much like a man.” Hence, her total lack of directorial nominations, even though she deserved at least one, for her great work in “Yentl.” I did find it ironic they let her present the Best Director award once, probably because everyone was certain Kathryn Bigelow would become the first female director to win the prize - and she did. (Still think reigning Best Director Danny O’Boyle should have been co-presenter). Like Ida Lupino and a few others, Streisand was a true pioneer, paving the way for other female directors to enjoy the acclaim she was denied. Two other female directors have since taken the prize (although not nominated, Sian Heder directed last year’s best picture winner, “Coda,” and won the Oscar for Best adapted screenplay). I respect Barbra’s talent and determination enormously. Most of the public does, too.

    This one scene really exemplifies what the gamut of emotions between a chance meeting between old lovers would likely be. First the surprise and joy of randomly seeing each other again; some small talk, her quick exit, and him not letting her go that easily by following her across the street. Then the heartfelt embrace that rekindled some deep feelings, briefly discussing their child together, and then finally, him recovering and accepting reality by stepping back and cooly saying goodbye as she did the same by ending with the as detached ban the bomb. While inside, the emotional after effects would take much longer to heal. Great scene!

    "You never give up, do you?"..."Only when I'm absolutely forced to." Those lines refer to a scene that was cut from the film; Katie realized that in order for Hubbell to keep working in Hollywood, she could either name names before HUAC (the House Un-American Activities Committee) or divorce Hubbell. Since doing the former was unthinkable, she did the latter; it was her ultimate sacrifice - giving up the man she loved so he wouldn't lose his livelihood. Situations like that were common during the blacklisting period of the 50s, and director Sydney Pollock made a big mistake by removing the scene in question. The film still works as a love story thanks to the remarkable chemistry between Streisand and Redford, but it could have been much more - perhaps a Best Picture nominee - if Pollack hadn't lost his nerve.

    I will never forget when Robert Redford said it to Barbara Streisand for the first time in the movie, beautiful, loud laughter broke out in the cinema, when he said it for the third time in front of the fireplace, there was a deep silent silence in the auditorium. .. This is art, that's why it's worth making a film.

      A decade after _The Way We Were_ was released, Robert Redford contacted screenwriter Arthur Laurents to discuss the possibility of collaborating on a sequel where Hubbell and his daughter, a radical like Katie, would meet and the complications that would ensue. Ultimately, the idea was dropped.

    How more sad and depressing can life be when two people who loved each other so much can't be together? It seems that great loves aren't meant to be forever but just be together until the closure comes on their way ...

      The love of my life and I lost each other after two years of being together. We were so young. Parents moved us away. He called me this year, 34 years later. We’ve never stopped loving each other. He’s married now. And here I sit. Heartbroken. Not understanding why such a love is wasted when ppl in the world could use it. I ask God all the time what was the purpose of that phone call if it only was going to tear my heart out?

    I saw this movie when it first came out. It was a role reversal for me and the girl I was with. It could have never worked out and regrettably, there would never be a chance encounter later on - only in the movies for most of us. I don't remember if I cried at the time or not. No matter, and it is far better to have fond memories than to challenge the paths of our lives. I felt at the time that the movie was really about attitudes, emotions, and heartbreaks of war. Now nearly 50 years later the details of that day at the movies have hardly faded.

    A beautiful finale and a pristinely filmed scene. I especially like the small, telling moments such as when Hubbell's wife clutches his arm which draws Katie's attention and brings her back to the reality. Also, when they embrace at the end, Katie's eyes are closed but open at the moment she realizes that he is embracing her as tightly as she is him. Barbra's eyes sell this scene and display her emotions perfectly.
