It's shocking that this film - originally intended for a TV special - has never been properly restored and officially released. The leaked excerpts show it was top class, so why not let us have it in full, and with pristine quality?
Som Luong, Mark P.: Are you guys on drugs. She was 25 years too old and both Pearl Bailey and Ethel Merman sang it better. Not everything that Streisand does is “better than buttah”.
I was at this show 50 years ago tonight, the night before this film was made. It was to be a TV special, but was only telecast on Ed Sullivan in this great segment. I was 16 years old. It was a memorable night. For $15, you got Barbra and a lobster dinner. I still have the program/menu. Her singing and star power were consummate perfection. I feel lucky to have been there and remember the show vividly. That same afternoon Ted Kennedy had gone on TV to try to explain Chappaquidick. To think, Barbra was just singing in Hyde Park a week or so ago. Like the song says, "She's still going strong."
Great memories, Jorvieto! Elvis would make his premiere at The International Hotel three days after, on July 31, 1969. Do you have photos of this time? (in Las Vegas, at hotel...?)
@@mwendler I don't have any photos, only the program. I wish I had taken pictures. The hotel was brand new. Just outside the showroom was a baccarrat table, and Bill Cosby was playing there an hour or two before Barbra's show started, placing huge bets. It was so hot in Vegas (of course). Peggy Lee was doing the lounge show. We didn't see her. The oddest thing -- when I went down to scout out where the showroom was that afternoon, a man came up to me and asked me if I was with CBS. I had no idea they were going to be taping it. Being 16, I can't have looked like a CBS staff person. Will never figure that one out. I wish we could have stayed and seen Elvis.
@@Jorvieto Fabulous memories! I'm trying to find internal photos of The International Hotel at that time but is very hard. (kkkkk) I don't have 100% certain but I think possible Elvis was in the audience at this show presented by Ed Sullivan. If yes, maybe CBS can had registered some footage of him. @@mwendler I haven't looked for photos of the International. Would love to see some, but I remember it very vividly. It had some wild colors. Wow, how amazing. Her voice is so strong, ringing and resonant. Her voice is very powerful but not in a "Shirley Bassey" kind of way. Shirley Bassey always sing at full volume, that's her default setting. Barbra can be loud, soft and everything in between. She is devoid of any habits, she just adjust to what the lyrics or her inspiration demands. She can be breathy one minute and growl like a tigress the next. She never strain her voice, it looks so easy. And since she's a natural (she never took a lesson), her singing doesn't sound manufactured. It's always fresh, spontaneous, free with a certain kind of purity, innocence, vulnerability. There is a certain detachment also in her delivery, like she doesn't care if she isn't liked, contrary to someone like Lea Michele who wants you desparately to love her (even if I love Lea).
You are completely right, Barbra has a breath and vocal control like no other, even Shirley bassey, Judy garland and Whitney aren’t a match for her… Truly the queen, and the charm of Barbra is that she is one of the greatest actresses of her generation, and she mixes the singing and acting in stage perfectly… Ps: I can’t stand Lea Michele and she isn’t comparable to Barbra in any way…
Barbra at her very best. She later started singing more softly but that trombone growl she had at the time in contrast with her crystal clear high notes just went straight to your heart. Even the nasal quality of her tone was pretty and brought perfect emotional depth to the material. Her fashion sense and presentation were absolutely beautiful here as well. She was a rebel up until the 80’s where she became a much more polished version of herself. Cannot wait for her book.
My great grandmother, two grandmothers, my mother, and a smattering of all the older men in my family have been telling me this since 1964! BRAVO BABS! BRAVO!
I am always totally awestruck when I hear the lovely Barbra. My idol for more than 50 years. I saw her too, in Funny Girl in London when we were both so young. Cannot imagine life without her.
This is a gem, I've never seen this before. I've always love the movie since I was a little kid dreaming one day to sing like her, you don't see performances like this no more, Barbara Streisand was gifted with a beautiful voice, amazing just amazing my hat off!!!
She has remained so true to her unique and classy performance style. Dialogue, humor, fashion, and stage set. A setee? Of course! No one else puts on a show like her or ever will. She creates a comfortable and engaging set and rapport with the audience while still making it about her singing, not gimmicks. And we watch spellbound!
The woman has a perfect understanding of what a song requires in terms of delivering the drama and theatre of a song, Using her great pipes, her great finesse with lyrics, her wild and exotic beauty (with the fab hair, superb make up and exquisite gown, she looks especially a vision in this clip ) and also her great clowning abilities she delivers here an absolutely riveting and unforgettable performance! And for that she has my eternal gratitude. ,

I don't think Ed Sullivan made it clear that this was virtually part of Barbra's act at her current residency at the (brand new) International Hotel in Vegas (July 2-Aug15 1969). Critics ripped the opening night to shreds claiming Barbra didn't even acknowledge the audience because she felt they were hostile, so she reportedly sang to the orchestra with her back to the audience most of the 55 mins.. But the second night went better and by the time this was filmed, Barbra had the act down pat and was clearly enjoying herself. She was paid over a $1 million dollars, the highest in Vegas' history at the time. Tickets were $15 dollars!
Barbra was too young for the film version of "Dolly" but wisely, instead of acting old, she just went with it... a young Dolly. Carol Channing's book would later crow about Barbra's film failing, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Well, first On A Clear Day (1970), Stoney End (Feb '71) - then BJS (Aug '71). Barbra Joan Streisand (Barbara Joan Streisand - flip side of album cover) is my favorite 70's album of hers, followed closely by Lazy Afternoon.
No one can sing a song or entertain us like Barbra. She didn’t want the part but wise men like director Gene Kelly picked her so don’t blame her. Carol Channing did it on Broadway but I don’t think she could have handled the singing on the movie.

I've met her 3 times - once at 12 when I was receiving a vocal award - once when I was 25 with Paul Jabara (Enough Is Enough) and once shortly after that when we partied together at Bob Esty's house.
Unbelievable that Walter Matthau said to her, "I have more talent in my farts than you have in your whole body." But she became really good friends with his wife
I met Ruth Gordon who starred in this story in 1954 in 1982 during my 1st year in College at Emerson in Boston. We hit it off right away and she invited me to live with her that next summer in Martha's Vineyard for 3 months. I did. We smoked pot - drank green tea and went yard sailing everyday - laughing our asses off. It was very HAROLD AND MAUDE without the sex. She was sexy thought in a way - very spunky at 94 with alot left in the tank. Then I met Barbra in Hollywood 3 months later.
It's shocking that this film - originally intended for a TV special - has never been properly restored and officially released. The leaked excerpts show it was top class, so why not let us have it in full, and with pristine quality?

(At least I've seen her in concert).
