      Hi Anson. I'm not sure why I didn't see your post 5 months ago. This is definitely hard to do as first. I find if I use dopy sound with the "gee" that is helps stabilize the larynx. As you go higher, it has to get "hooty" or hollow sounding in order to keep the larynx from going up. Some motion in the larynx is normal. It's when its excessive like when you swallow, that get's us into trouble.

    Hi Chuck! Do stress and tiredness from work/school affect the vocal cords? Right now, I’m experiencing vocal distress because I adjusted the time of my practice from morning to evening due to my school days and stressful moments. I’m 15 years old and you said that I’m already ongoing vocal change. Please let me know if it’s still okay to practice at night even though you’re physically tired the whole day. Because I really freaking get want to rid of my vocal strain. I have this kind of scenario wherein I fully sing on my diaphragm but still I experience squeeziness on my throat very much that my veins starts to pop out. Please let me know about my problem and if you can give me tips so that I can alter my muscle memory against vocal strain. Thank you so much, Chuck! I hope your reply will really help me even though I have school days.

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  5 лет назад +1

      Yes stress can effect your vocal cords. But being 15 affects them a lot more. Your job is twice as hard as a 21 year old as far as eliminating straining and squeezing. One thing that really helps is to not exercise so loud....really try and do everything softer, easier. Just barely loud enough to maintain the connection so you don't crack or break.

    hello Chuck! Thank you for your video, it is very helpful!
    Question though, when you say that the swallowing muscle should not be pushing against the thumb, does it mean that there is absolutely no movement (even slight) on the swallowing muscles? or is it only the 'wrong' way when the swallowing muscles are really really tight against the thumb?

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  8 лет назад +3

      +joyce janik Great question Joyce. It's very hard to not have any tension there. When doing an exercise like the 1 1/2 scale as shown at about 03:00 min. in the video, yes, virtually no movement. You will find you get better at this as you let go of the outer swallowing muscles and concentrate on letting the internal vocal cords do it themselves. I find if I do it softer it also reduces the tension and I'm more successful. Then build more volume gradually but without the swallowing muscles. Finally, in his book "Singing For the Stars" pp 59, speaking of this exercise, Seth Riggs offers this caveat: "This doesn't include transitional tensions that take place as you change vowels and consonants. It only refers to sustained tones." So in my opinion this exercise really helps eliminate tension caused by swallowing muscles. When you apply this to words (changing vowels and consonants) there will be some movement. But hopefully little to no tension from the swallowing muscles that was once there.

    What if when I do nay's my voice sounds in pathetic way on high pitches? As I start to sing high notes my voice starts to sound unpleasant, but it doesn't sound like screaming. When I do this I try to reduce volume and I can feel the resonance in my head, so I undestand It is not falsetto but such sound unacceptable in song singing.

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  6 лет назад +1

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  6 лет назад

      Without hearing you it's difficult to give you specific for your voice. It is kind of mix or head voice if high enough. The bratty sound helps make it lighter than chest, but deeper than falsetto. I recommend trying to maintain the bratty/witchy sound but reduce the volume. You have a better chance of a balanced voice. You can begin to increase the volume and do the neys less bratty until it's a normal voice.

    Hi chuck, does this exercise directs us to use pharyngeal resonance?

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  3 года назад

      This exercise helps separate the vocal cords from external muscle tension around the neck. In process of doing the exercises, the resonance will travel from chest to head voice and back to chest. But this is not the exaggerated pharyngeal sound created by the bratty ney.

If you regularly feel like there is phlegm on your vocal cord, I suggest you go see an ENT doctor for persistent mucus maybe a sign of inflammation in your larynx, there can be a wide range of causes from gastric reflux, postnasal drip syndrome, overused of the larynx, ect. Moreover doctors can prescribe some mucolytic agents that can help loosen up the mucus. Hope that helped.

      Hi Jaime: The external muscles are the ones you feel when you swallow. If you put your hand on your Adam's apple and swallow, you can feel it move up and then back down. This happens a lot for singers as well. Eventually with training and practice you can sing high without the larynx moving upward. This solves a lot of problems. You might check out PowerToSing.com, take the PowerTest and quiz to get your vocal type. The videos and exercises in the Knowledge Center will help you keep the Larynx down.
