+Seraph Arceus (Skippyjack) Hi Seraph. Yes this is common. Usually it's caused by the larynx rising as you sing higher. As it rises the vocal cords separate and you break or flip into falsetto. Some of us just let go as we do higher and allow or encourage the cords to separate into falsetto. You may want to take the PowerTest at www.powertosing.com to see whether you are flip-falsetto or pulled chest-high larynx vocal type. Power To Sing I really need your help. Could I ask you what voice type o would have if beyond F5 there is a vocal flip and sounds become clearer. Like my low nots sometimes are forced whereas my higher notes seem clearer and defined. My lowest is Eb2. My mix goes to C#6 on a really good day. My highest Falsetto to this day being an F#6. Whistle takes beyond there from G6-Eb7. I don't have a deep voice at all whatsoever. I'm 16 male and I've had my fair share of vocal training. Got any ideas what I ought to be. (Also from what I've heard if you can do a note in falsetto you can do it in head voice so I'm trying to get that F#6 but only time will tell.) !

What female vocal-range is male Falsetto roughly the equivalent of, please? Is it Alto or Mezzo-soprano? Only, I can sing in either the Alto or the Mezzo range.
Although you posted this awhile ago, I'm no singer, musician, whatever.. Just someone that listens to music. I wanted to learn and hear the difference between all the voices. Now I know what I'm doing whenever I'm singing to a song. Now I know why, when I exert myself, I can go higher, but my voice cracks when I try to squeeze my voice. I found this video trying to understand what a Falsetto is, and to fill my time, I'll probably watch the rest of your videos. Who knows, I may impress some people one day. Like a "Hey baby, did you know that I can sing?" kind of way. Thank you.
Hey Chuck! I can sing in both chest voice and falsetto comfortably. However, I am having a lot of trouble finding my head voice and I find that the vocal break which comes with it a rather large barrier to improvement in singing! Any tips? Thanks in advance. :)
LinusSings It's difficult to give advice without hearing you but when singing falsetto, try to find the resonance in your nasal cavatiy, start quietly, then add a little more volume so the tone gets brighter or sharper, slightly fuller, try to "mask" the sound. This way you can find the connection to your chest.
Cheers, appreciate the advice! When it comes to tenor notes I tend to stay in chest voice, forcing my larynx up and tightening my throat muscles causing an irritating nasally sound rather than utilising twang to blend my chest voice into my head voice and having almost an octave gap of notes in the middle of my range between chest voice and falsetto which I can't sing without straining.
LinusSings You're simply singing too loud then! Try bridging earlier and in a more quiet way to find your head voice, imagine singing a baby to sleep, it won't sound "right" but when you've found your head voice you start bringing up more volume in this register. You will get there, no worries! ;)
The whole time I felt like I was playing Mass Effect and reading through the Codex again. Pretty similar to that voice artist. That aside a great video.
This just changed my entire perspective. I have been struggling with my vocal break and wondering why I cannot get through to a strong head voice without cracking and sounding breathy/airy. Me cracking is actually going into falsetto rather than keeping good chord closure through the break. So I now need to focus on keeping good chord closure through my break. Any tips on what I should be concentrating/focusing on through my break? I find my Larynx rises quite abit when going up high in my chest voice. I have tried to add compression/core pressure through my break and push through with but that makes my throat hurt. Thanks for all your help. Nathan from New Zealand.
i guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost my account password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me.
I'm loled at your demos, but seriously it's very informative and now I'm realized I'm singing falsetto all this time just very recently that I can sing in head voice.
Hi Annette: No. A high head voice is opposite a low chest voice. Both are used by altos, tenors, baritones, countertenors and all the different voice classifications. A countertenor is a male tenor with a very high range...and can often sound like a female singer. Countertenors, like any other voice classification can use both falsetto as well as head voice.
If you notice in the Brit video, the volume of sound is greatly diminished when the vocal fold pulls apart or not approximate fully. The examples you give us as falsetto sound like a breathy head voice because there is little change in volume. A little less resonance because of all the air being forced through the vocal cords. One can't connect the breathy sound to a chest or head/chest mix because the flow of air must diminish suddenly which will certainly cause the "flip" sound. You speak of resistance (breath pressure) when the cords are together and vibrating properly when singing in the head voice, but the sound is too similar to your falsetto; in quality, color and volume. The upper part of the vocal folds pull apart to produce a true falsetto sound, but the bottom part of the folds still phonate, requiring more air to do so. It is possible to develop the falsetto part of the voice to mirror a quality head voice, but that is the exception and certainly not the rule. You speak of 3 types of voice; chest, head and falsetto. You should include a fourth - a head/chest mixed voice, mainly used in classical music and certainly not used well by traditional female "belters." Some pop singers have utilized that mix to a great extent; Chenowith, Celine, Streisand and many others.
Great to have stumbled on a teacher who actually _knows_ what they're talking about. There's so many "vocal teachers" on youtube whose advice is "breathe from the diaphram" - given while pointing to their bladder.
Thank you so much for your profound explanation. I always had this confusion about Falsetto and Head Voice as we do not use falsetto much in our style here in India. Now i am much more clear about the difference between the two. Great work and regards!
This was a big help. In years past I was able to hit higher notes but didn't realize until now that sometimes I was doing it with head voice and sometimes with falsetto. Now I understand the mechanics thanks to you and of course I definitely prefer head voice.
fantastic video! Very helpful for me. I like how you actually give clear examples to what you are talking about, really helps me understand further. thank you!
+TheRandomOne360 Hi TRO360! Thanks for the feedback. It's almost impossible for me to understand something like this without actually hearing it. I appreciate hearing it helped you.
Sharon WONG I’m struggling to find my head voice because falsetto has always been so easy, and sounds great for me, but that power from head voice is what I want
If you can sing really high in head voice, that is great! Trust me, if you ever want to pursue a career in musical theatre/singing, the ability to hit those high notes without having to switch into falsetto is extremely valued.
How can I find my head voice? Like I just feel like there's no way for me to develop my head voice. I feel like i'm stuck in falsetto. Any way to perhaps let my falsetto guide me to head voice? Or maybe the shape of my mouth is off?
New to the actual theory of singing so I never knew the actual names for the techniques but there is this one melody out of this game called monster hunter freedom unite, it's the lao shan lung stage 1 theme, the melody goes from high to low, so after months of singing it for fun in the shower I just naturally developed the technique for not having to create an unnatural break in the tune. If anyone is interested in the song I'm talking about I'll link it, really helped me out with song like Aha - take on me, could be just me because I don't know what I'm really talking about, I'm better at doing than saying. The bit I'm talking about is at 2mins and 42secs in the song ruclips.net/video/g8-KeilGatU/видео.html
TheIceCubes yeah in my opinion Falsetto is way easier to hit than head voice, honestly can’t rlly find my head voice, when I try going from a low pitch to a high pitch, my chest voice ends at at a pretty low note, just low enough to not be high, and then to continue going higher I have to go in falsetto, I just can’t seem to find my head voice for some reason
I loved this, it was so helpful I've always had trouble understanding head voice and how to distinguish it from falsetto i never realized that once you go into falsetto its kind of like a trap lol because of not being able to go back to head or chest voice without dissconnecting, again thanks much this was increbibly helpful and i enjoyed it :)!

@@stevianjones552 Hi Stevan: None of these exercises will cause you to sing off key. They will actually help you stay on key. One thing I want to ask, does my highest note using head voice can be considered as the highest point or part of my vocal range? This video really opened up my mind between falsetto and head voice. Thank you for this wonderful video😃
Thanks Danilo. Yes and no. Maybe you can say, my head voice range is "X" and my falsetto range is "Z". Eventually, as you learn to increase your connected tone...it will be all head voice.
I'm flip-falsetto and every time I try to sing in my "head voice" it's actually falsetto, so I can't sing louder or belt even though I can sing high :/ how do I train my voice so that I'll be able to hit those notes in head voice rather than falsetto?? Should I just continue on with the flip-falsetto practices, or add other exercises? Please help..
+Kassia Mary Hi Kassia. I just watched your cover of fight song. I really liked it. How long have you been doing the exercises? Have you seen any improvement? I think it would be a good idea to have you record the PowerTest again and email it to me and let me listen to it.
I have to say I HATE RUclips vocal vid because I disagree with 99% of the things I read and I believe that most people teach what they’ve been taught, without consideration to whether it’s true or it’s actually worked for them. They pass on inaccurate info this way and it’s slightly removed more each time. This video is 100% accurate scientifically but also the way you put it across leaves no room for poor interpretation. Awesome work!
This presents me with a dilemma: do I continue calling head voice falsetto, in order to impress people with my vocabulary, or do I start correcting others who do so, in order to impress people with my ability to make the distinction? 🤔
I had voice lessons in college and, not be mean but, they didn't seem to teach me anything. I've been looking at musical things online and learning what I should have been taught in college. The few videos I have watched of yours point to my problem areas and make me feel like I am one step closer to understanding my voice. When I tell people I don't know how to sing, I mean I don't know how to do mixed voice, at least as I have understood from your video.
Yes...my experience in voice lessons has helped me understand that a teacher with a college degree is no guarantee they know how and what to teach. No one is withholding or misleading on purpose. It's just that they don't know that they don't know. As a student, I thought that a Masters degree in vocal performance meant they did know and therefore I trusted and believed they did. That was a mistake. Not to say I know all. I know I don't.
If I may dear Chuck, a question~ (?) 🙂 I'm not sure if I "found" my head Voice.. OR if I'm just "pulling" chest Voice.. As a Baritone F4 is my limit without Falseto! So my question is, did I "find" my head Voice and I need to keep on working on it as to extend my range of the head voice? Or I'm I pulling chest and hurting myself? How can I know...(?) Some say head voice is like a doorway, once you access it, you will have at least 5-6 notes freedom higher. Other say, you find your head voice in 1-2 notes after your passagio and then you work on it until you get more range. Confused... 😐 Thank you for your time and amazing Videos!!
No. You found your bridge at E, F, F#4. If you are bridging you don't go into falsetto. Your head voice begins coming in around the E4 and you start mixing with chest voice until the G4. Then you continue in head voice up from there. And you can extend your range often times significantly in head voice.
All of my life I have been singing in falsseto but now I learn how to mix the head voice and falsetto. BTW I am so glad that I can control my head now hahahsh
So far all I'm getting is that, in terms of lets say color to help, Falsetto is when you see separated colors compared to Head Voice which has a more gradient effect like in Photoshop. One needs to stop then continue where it left off, where you see the colors separate, and the other smoothly goes from one set to the next, a top Red to bottom Purple.

Is falsetto ever used in theatre? I don't think I ever use falsetto because my head voice is so much clearer? Is that bad? Why wouldn't everyone just sing in head voice since it's clearer?
+SongRainbows Hi SongRainbows. I think the only reason someone might use falsetto is because they can't do head voice because they break or flip into falsetto. But for me, singing male songs, there is such a lose of power using falsetto, there really aren't any songs that work with falsetto in musical theater. So you don't get those parts anyway unless you can sing in head voice. Plus you have the added advantage that your head voice blends into your chest voice. You have a definite advantage singing in head voice.
+Power To Sing wow thank you for answering! Would it be the same for a female? Because I'm a soprano and I don't use falsetto. There is one more question I had, I'm not sure if you've seen the music of the night from phantom of the opera but when the phantom says "to soar" is that head voice?
+SongRainbows it's also really nice to know the difference because so many singing teachers and even the coaches on the voice refer to head voice as falsetto and it's always confusing
+SongRainbows I think it is similar for a female. However, your notes can get so high that I don't think the contrast is a great between head voice and falsetto in your highest upper range. But I still think head voice offers more than disconnected falsetto. In the movie version of the song you reference, it's my opinion he's in head voice and not falsetto. I think his vocal cords have remained connected, even though he is singing softly.
Hi! Sir ... Can you give me opinion... What Foods that i shouldn't Eat like Sugar, Sweet foods it can Harm our voice ...Like in my experience. after eating Chocolate and i sing, my voice isn't comfortable to sing ...

Thank you.
Thanks Alan! Good luck on your singing!

You will get there, no worries! ;)
@@linussings8172 try getting the yawning open feeling in your throat while you sing tenor.
Wow! I thought I had been singing in falsetto but I've been using my head voice! Thanks for the super informative video :)

How to know if your vocal cords are disconnected or connected.
That's what I was wondering
Awesome video sir...clear and concise and tackles the subject admirably. I am feeling confident of tackling both voices all of a sudden. Thanks.
You can do it!

Is a high head voice a counter tenor and do counter tenors ever use falsetto? I keep hearing mixed opinions on this
Hi Annette: No.
Thanks for your comment Campusscoll.

If you can sing really high in head voice, that is great! Trust me, if you ever want to pursue a career in musical theatre/singing, the ability to hit those high notes without having to switch into falsetto is extremely valued.

It's up to you...but stay humble and let your knowledge work for you to make you a better singer!

Alwyn Christudoss I found my head voice by lowering my larynx to the correct position giving me the best quality of richness in my voice ( head voice)

What is your vocal type? Have you taken the test here? www.powertosing.com/
No i havnt but i would love to! Thanks for the link sir
I made the mistake of assuming there was a long intro and skipped to 2:32

So far all I'm getting is that, in terms of lets say color to help, Falsetto is when you see separated colors compared to Head Voice which has a more gradient effect like in Photoshop. One needs to stop then continue where it left off, where you see the colors separate, and the other smoothly goes from one set to the next, a top Red to bottom Purple.

Power To Sing
Power To Sing Could I ask you what voice type o would have if beyond F5 there is a vocal flip and sounds become clearer. (Also from what I've heard if you can do a note in falsetto you can do it in head voice so I'm trying to get that F#6 but only time will tell.) !
thank you sooooooooo much

+Power To Sing thank you so much! This is great to know
