I guess I'll say it here first before commenting about breathing that yesterday, I sang through your exercises for pulled chest-high larynx for the first time right before practicing a song I'm learning and found I had no difficulty at all on a phrase that in the past has always given me trouble; where it suddenly jumps from a low note (chest) to a high note (head), then back to chest voice. My confidence and enjoyment of the song skyrocketed, and it was all so easy. I haven't tried it since but this could be the freedom I've been seeking for my voice my entire singing life, and I'm 66 years old. Thank you for sharing this gem of a technique! Regarding breathing, I'm not sure if I'm doing it right, but I find that it is helpful to feel an engagement for just a split second before gently pulling my belly button inward toward the back. Otherwise, I find too much escape of air right at the start of singing. Do you feel that engagement when you breathe, or do you discourage it because it introduces unwanted tension?
Yes...definitely I feel an engagement...which I think is the coming together of the vocal cords. This will help you as much as the breathing technique!
First VISUAL AID I've seen from any online vocal coach and finally I actually understand it!! Thank you sooo much! I have been swinging here and there with music and I am a participant in my school music club!! This will definitely help me sing much better at our next club meeting!! Thank you, Sir Gilmore 🙂

@@PowerToSing Also, the way you are interrupting the Seth Riggs info to what you are doing is great. Easy to understand and apply which is the big thing for me. As a suggestion, i would love to hear your take in a video about songwriting in terms of melody and words since that is what the end user is hearing. Maybe have a session for songwriters which could employ all the info you are putting out there. Just an idea. Not many on YT are able to do this. Just a thought and suggestion.
@@planetcool2240 PC can you be more specific? What is it exactly that a song writer needs to hear, or that would help the song writer make his/her songs better?
@@PowerToSing When you initially write a song, you have a plan with a melody and potential lyrics to fit that melody or vice versa. There are no rules but there is either lyrics or a melody that will be used when recording the vocals. This might not be a signing question in one sense so I apologize for not being clear, but as songwriter and vocalist, i think the biggest challenge is to getting the right words to fit that melody sometimes or having a great lyric line and finding the right phrasing and melody to go with it. I do find that your videos do talk about technique but also you seem to mix that part in about how words fit in too. I guess its a trial an error thing and I am just asking how it all comes together when recording or if there are tips you can share when recording vocals. Sorry for the long message and thanks for reading.
@@planetcool2240 There is no question that lyrics and melody lines have a big impact on each other. If a singer is struggling especially with high notes, they think by lowering the key it will get easier. However, if by lowering the key the melody and chorus and or bridge of the song is at the top of chest voice, they will be hoarse by the end of the gig...if many of their songs are pitched this way. They actually should raise the key so the melody line is frequently in their first vocal bridge (so the voice can easily Mix) and the high notes of the chorus or bridge can occur at the top of their first vocal bridge or even in their 2nd vocal bridge for climax notes. This also supposes that they know how to sing Mix voice. The results is very interesting and exciting songs.
Hey man: I’ve figured out a way. Most singers do this. Put your hand on your chest firmly as if you’re singing a heartfelt phrase. This helps to not move the chest and only the stomach to do the moving.
Hello again, Chuck! How long should I do these exercises before seeing a difference? I know this is my main issue as an artist with a mixed vocal type…should I do all the FastTrack exercises at once or focus on breathing?
Get the basics down on breathing...It shouldn't take long. Then apply the breathing to every exercise and song you sing. Breathing is much simpler than the singing world makes it. But it will take conscious effort at first until it becomes a habit. You should notice improvement immediately when done correctly.
@@PowerToSing, thank you so much for all your tips! I will incorporate all these and schedule a lesson soon. I’ve watched MANY videos in the past week and commented on a few…you were the only coach that responded and your information provided worked! Thanks again and talk to you soon!!!😊
Hello! Great video as usual. So I can support my voice, but after I sing a phrase, I usually have some extra air left that I need to exhale before inhaling for the next phrase. Is there any solution to this?
When you talk, do you keep talking until you have expelled all your air? Or do you just breath when you want to? When singing, just breath where it makes sense...like the end of a phrase or sentence or at a comma in the lyrics. No need to wait until you are out of air to take a breath.
I feel like I can breath my diaphragm when singing but I have a quick question I’ve seen a lots of videos but is it correct when I exhale and sing you tighten the stomach muscles and pull Inwards or do you just let the stomach exhale on its own or do you pull in as you sing gently? I’m worried I’m tightening my abs to much causing tension if that makes sense. Great video by the way I subscribed! :-)
@@PowerToSing Thanks so much for replying. So as you take a breath and you exhale as you sing you keep pulling in the stomach or do you pull on each note or phrase you sing? Should it be like when your laughing the stomach is pulling inwards going up and down after every laugh or do you pull in at a consistent rate until you need to take a breath again? Sorry for the bad analogy of the laughing its the best i can describe haha Thankyou :-)
Mr. Gilmore your channel is probably one of the best, so specific and thoughtful. I also like how "out there" the informations are, it's not like you keep anything for yourself to baiting people on purchasing stuff. My question is what's your opinion on ribs expanding as a way to breath and support while singing ? Thanks.
Thank you. I have found that if I focus on good posture, with my shoulders back and my chest up...leading with my rib cage, my ribs are expanded really nicely. Then I am able to fill my lungs with as much air as I need. After that, I don't get too concerned about more ribcage expansion. It seems to take care of itself. To me, focusing too much more on rib expansion introduces more body tension which is not helpful.
I love this! Is it common to feel light-headed when singing with your diagram? Sometimes I feel like I am using too much air, or the air is too "powerful"
Hi Jake. It's not common. But I think you are right...too much oxygen is making you light headed. Just moderate how much air you are taking in. It doesn't take a lot of air for this to help you.
It can. And sometimes that's exactly what you want. Other times, you pull your tummy in slow....to control the air. With practice, it works really well!
I learned quickly to breathe with my diaphragm by wearing a corset type dress for Renaissance Faire. I was unable to move my chest so I had to figure out a new way to breathe. I've been breathing with my diaphragm ever since. I have a very strong diaphragm and can expel air out at a long length.
I like many of your ideas Chuck, bit the diaphragm is higher than the abdominals or tummy. We do not do yogic breathing, where stomach expands, rather above it where the diaphragm expands as the tummy remains toned, and as we exhale we use compressed air as in an exhale on a sssssss where the muscles do not move a lot. I have tried every method in the book, but this is what works for me and my students. That being said, perhaps there are many roads that lead to Rome??
There are many great breathers that are lousy singers...and lousy breathers that are great singers. I think breathing is very helpful, but there is so much more.
