I totally get that those squeaky door type exercises let you produce a pitch without engaging neck and/or chin muscles. However, this, for me, never seems to result in the same total relaxation of those neck/chin muscles when singing in a normal/real head voice. The squeak is a sound that breaks up when trying to increase the volume. It simply is not a normal/real head voice. It is just another disconnected register like falsetto, except that it can be connected at a very low volume. It is debatable/questionable as to whether these squeaky type exercises actually have any real benefit. (at least for me they don't have any quantifiable provable benefit) My point is, having the chin and neck muscles be totally relaxed, when producing a high note, is not of any real benefit because the sound is always relegated to a wimpy squeak at an extremely low volume, as opposed to a real/normal head voice at a normal speaking volume. Again, increasing the volume always results in the sound breaking up, because, in reality, the squeak is just another disconnected register just like falsetto.
Thanks for your comment. I think it's hard to get the same results with other vowels and words. In the next video, I'll see if I can demonstrate how to translate this into a real vowel sound.

Hey, very good tutorial! I wanna ask you something. I've never token vocal classes and I want to improve my voice, is your videos are helping me to improve my voice and sing beautifully and flawlessly or is it only based on reaching high notes and getting a falsetto? I don't really value high notes like sure it's a great add-up to have but what's most important is to have that base. thanks for clarifying I'm diffently subscribing either ways
Last year I lost my voice for 2 weeks and ever since then my voice has never been the same especially when I sing high my voice stops making any noise.
I am never able to follow the longer scales no matter how long I've heard scales. Unlike a song where I eventually memorize lyrics and melody, scales are my bain. I can not grasp that many notes at once in order to sing along with scales.
Often...it's easier if you break the long scales into parts. Just do the first 3 notes, then when you can do those, add the next 3. Then when you have the first half, add 3 more of the second half....do those with the first half. Eventually, add the last 4 notes. Then practice the whole thing. see what happens.
Yes. But it's more likely you flip into falsetto because you pull chest up and the larynx is rising. Get the larynx to stay resting and you will get rid of the flip.

It's muscle memory. You have to learn a new way of doing it. With practice you can substitute the old way with the new. It can take a while, but it's not an overnight process.
Ive seen different describtions of the squeeky door exercise on the internet. And similar friendly compression sounds. And different names, such as the creek, vocal fry, creeky mmm. Ive also seen the explaination of the squeeky door exercise as suppose to the edgy mmm. Hi Andrew: The edgy mmm or squeeky door for me is different than the vocal fry. The vocal fry has a beating coordination on the vocal cords whereas the squeeky door is still a wave coordination that engages the edges of the vocal cords. Either way I think all these are an effect rather that the cause of cord compression. The squeeky door exercise is primarily used to learn to produce tone without engaging the digastric muscles under the chin. A byproduct of the exercise is to hold more of the vocal cords to the midline firmly. It shouldn't be a part of our final tone production...just a temporary tool to stop using once we are singing with a balanced voice...like we talk...if we talk normally.
Ive got a question ;-;, On the exercise where we put the thumb on the chin, if anyone will reply, is it ok if your thumb moves a little bit because I can only go up 2-3 notes then it starts moving a bit
Thankyou for these wonderful lessons sir! But as i try doing these exercies, I can feel the thumb pushed outward even on low notes, how do I practice not doing that?
It does take practice. I found that if I do it softly at first I'm much more successful that if I'm even medium loud. Bring down the volume. That will help.
Primarily by how loud and aggressive you are. Softer and not digging in hard with the tone will minimize how deep you get into the vocal cords and minimize extrinsic muscle involvement.
Power To Sing do you mean that the tone drives More towards headvoice, and not so Much weight is picked up? Like with the bratty nay nay exercise? Thanks you Andy
@@andyrundy678 No...I mean physically the vocal cords don't adduct as deep. Resulting in just the outer edges of the cords coming together and fewer surrounding muscles causing tension. Power To Sing thank you for your time! But this i a ”friendly compression sound” right? And it is suppose to be edgy? Like with Well adducted vocal cords (partial to diactivate the tendensy for the outer muscles to engage?) i mean since the sound is so squeeky/edgy and light/soft, the full weight of the cord is not activated but a thinner sound (with thinner cords) and thefore only the outer edges. Then it drives more towards higher frequensys compared to a bigger fuller (using more air sound and a thicker cord) that engage more lower frequencies? Am i understanding it right? Thank you Andy
@@andyrundy678 The ascending pitch drives it toward higher frequencies no matter whether the cords are adducted just on the outer edges or they are adducted deeply. Conversely, Lower frequencies are the results of lower pitches.
Great stuff! Am i suppose to use ”vocal fry” to get the cords closed? Or should it be Done with normal voice but with a little extra compression, causing it to sound like vocal fry?
Try not to add anything extra beyond what's in the video. If you try and add more, you can get more tension which makes it harder and harder. Eventually you will have to get rid of what you added extra....and that can be very difficult because it becomes muscle memory.
The only difference is your cords are staying adducted longer and you don't have to reestablish the connection as often with triplets. Also Triplets are closer to a sustained legato....which is the next step after triplets are mastered.
Hi Chuck. I have been doing the pulled chest high larynx exercises from powertosing.com. This is because as you said earlier, I have an imperfect mix. While the pulled chest high larynx exercises has helped a little, I am still wondering how do I improve my tone quality? However, I have been doing these exercises for a while and I have been trying to refine each exercise every time I do them, but I have not improved in tone quality and adding a little more power to my mix. Hi, I don't have so much of a problem with breaking or cracking. I find that sometimes my voice just cuts out completely and it's just silence except for the sound of air moving out of my throat. Will this tutorial help with that?
I have a question now just doing it exercise my headvoice power improve but as I go higher it goes from this headvoice sound to this falsetto. Do you think it could be that when I was young and I tried to learn whistle note as a bass and end up developing headvoice all the way to an D6. Or do you think it is because I learn falsetto. Or do you think it could be a result of “ pulled chest high Larynx. Because I regain my headvoice when I started to practice your pulled chest high larynx and learn how to not strain.
Yes...because the larynx is coming up you go into falsetto. Keeping the larynx down will help you bridge into head voice without disconnecting into falsetto or straining.
Until you can sing higher without cracking or breaking and no tension. But you should be able to see results the first few times you do it. Then it's getting muscle memory to take over. That can take up to 10 years.
Is it normal for the digastric muscles to be lifted just a bit while doing this exercise? I mean I have been doing this exercise and I have been doing it fine. just that in the highest note, there was a slight chin lift. is it allowed?

Yes...Take the vocal test to confirm your vocal type. Then get the exercises for Pulled Chest High Larynx if that is your result...which I expect it will be. Start here: www.powertosing.com/discover-your-vocal-type-wt
Hi Ramona: For me it's not really the diaphragm. In fact it's easy to over tighten the diaphragm and then every thing tightens up. But I do think a constant, consistent air flow....gentle air flow with the vocal cords can help keep the digastric muscles from activating. It's the balance between the cords and the air flow. I do it without pushing harder.

this exercise is so hard, i am blocked by the stacado exercise, the muscles dont want to relax... Do you have any exercise to relax this muscle?
Hi Gabriel: The exercises for Pulled Chest High Larynx here will help: www.powertosing.com/pulled-chest-high-larynx-2/
Do we have to consult doctor for this? He will look very strange if i ask
Hi Zohal: Can you clarify your question? What is it you want to know if you should ask a doctor about?
Is it normal for the digastric muscles to be lifted just a bit while doing this exercise? I mean I have been doing this exercise and I have been doing it fine. just that in the highest note, there was a slight chin lift. is it allowed?
Why is there a chin lift? Try bending your head slightly downward instead or bending at the waist and looking at the floor. What happens then?
yes I did that. I meant that the chin kind of gets a bit taut.
My voice doesn't produce a sound when I try to go high sometimes. What's the cause and how can I fix it?
Are you male? How old?
@@PowerToSing yes a male. 14 years old
@@bigshell33 You are going through a vocal change: watch this: ruclips.net/video/HmVVUu81xl8/видео.html
Does this work for reflux?
It will help, but you should see a doctor about the reflux. Over time it will damage your vocal cords and nothing will help.
@@PowerToSing thank u for taking the time to respond.Im fr the Philippines and I was just given an antacid which I have a feeling will not work for lpr...I'm currently taking honey to somehow protect my throat.and doing this exercise somehow make my vocal cords strong and effective.I feel that lpr doesn't really go away and its permanent.I just have to handle it well...
More power!
@@amcbleed7837 Hi Alexa. I agree with you. I have found one thing especially helpful. If I avoid eating 3-4 hours before I go to sleep it seems to help alot....especially with the morning voice...which extends to a better voice during the day! Good luck!
@@PowerToSing thank u ...u know its super annoying i can barely talk sometimes.
Hi! Can you recommend me something useful
My problem is: when I'm trying to reach a high note for example for me it starts from A4, and then when I want to go higher (I can go) my throat emm...are closing and I can't go higher I'm only pushing myself. Although my range is from E2 to E5 and higher I can't go. By the way I'm a man 15 years old
Maybe I need to do some exercises for relaxing that zone (throat and larynx), or I need to extend my range or take something from this video. Please help me )))) thanks
Yes...Take the vocal test to confirm your vocal type. Then get the exercises for Pulled Chest High Larynx if that is your result...which I expect it will be. Start here: www.powertosing.com/discover-your-vocal-type-wt

the only way to not push the thumb is pushing harder with the Diaphragm , am i right?
Hi Ramona: For me it's not really the diaphragm. In fact it's easy to over tighten the diaphragm and then every thing tightens up. But I do think a constant, consistent air flow....gentle air flow with the vocal cords can help keep the digastric muscles from activating. It's the balance between the cords and the air flow. I do it without pushing harder.
Thank you very much! i'll keep trying .
