No Judgment zone! How many of you have been taking shallow breaths or were unaware of how to breathe deeply before you watched this video? I can't tell you how many years I didn't understand this process until I started to take private lessons in my teens. It changed my life!
@@FranciscaRigaud I guess if you practice it for long enough it works with muscle memory, so you'll be doing this without thinking about it. I think it's basics, cause singers on stage have to focus on performing, and doing what they should do the best, and not at "Did my diaphragm expand enought right now?" and things like that, it should come automatically ;p
I remember my voice teacher trying to teach all this. He used to tell us to "imagine" pushing our ribs out... LOL. Hate when the piano tries to get in the last word...
Thanks so much. I've read and heard much about this technique, but this is the clearest, most complete demonstration I've ever seen. Learned so much. Thank you!
I just started practicing hiss exercise but always lost my breath in around 20seconds. But after applying what you said, I can hold it up to 40seconds immediately!! Thank you so much!! It really helped me to breath properly 💜
When ever I inhale or exhale when singing, should I inhale from the mouth and out from the nose or vice versa? I've been scouring for a good video about how to improve breathing, and there's something not clicking. This video is so detailed, and it's frustrating that I can't understand. Hopefully when quarantine is over, and I start taking vocal lessons, they can teach me in person. I might understand more that way. It's just hard for me to know if I'm doing it right.
Sometimes it’s either. I have t really noticed until I sang a phrase and kept track of whether it was through my nose or my mouth. Just make sure it feels natural and you’re not forcing anything. I hope that helps.
Breathing in through your nose will moisturize the air you are breathing in. It isn't always possible to breathe in quickly through your nose between phrases, but whenever possible breathe in through your nose. It will help keep your throat from drying out while singing.
This is awesome, I’m excited to practice! I’ve known how to breathe from diaphragm, but I think my biggest problem was I was taking too deep of breaths and therefore that throat thing (😂) was shutting and putting tension on my throat. This clears stuff up, thank you!
This demonstration seems really clear, but I can't seem to manage the ribcage expansion part of the inhale. If I exhale completely, my stomach drops and expands automatically on my inhale, but it seems like I can't expand my ribs without both raising my shoulders, and sucking back in my stomach where the initial expansion occurred. Has anybody managed to overcome this? I'd really appreciate some pointers.
Try thinking breathing into your back if you don't know how try placing a hand on your lower back and breathing into your hands while they're placed on your lower back
Thank you, this is something similar to what one of my cycling training partners was trying to explain to me about, when trying to get the optimum of cycling power when bicycle racing when at an all out effort is required, may peace be unto you!
Thank you Sensei, very meditative, made sense. "Breathing, I'm great at it". Watches video, Ohhh, then again...:) Great graphics and explanation, like the arrow technique. I caught the fun sound effect too:) Helpful information, I didn't know, now I do. This is why you are our Singing Sensei 😍😘💃💛🌿
How come everyone talks about the breathing part but not really the singing part? I get that the breath is the most important, but ... how do you actually SUPPORT your voice AFTER you breathe? That's the part I don't get. A thousand videos later, all talking about the breathing, but not the singing while supporting part. How does one "SUPPORT" the voice after breathing in correctly?
Use your poop muscles. Going to the bathroom is a natural act so you should not feel any tension. You definitely dont want to firm up your abs to support the breath...that is not natural and will introduce tension when singing. That is my interpretation of support.
Not true! ... but it's a very common misconception. It's actually not true that singing needs more air pressure than speaking in order to activate the vocal cords. As a matter of fact neither singing, nor speaking needs any air-pressure (or even air-flow) at all to activate the vocal cords. What makes the muscles of the vocal cords vibrate are bio-electrical impulses from the brain going through a branch of the vagus nerve to innervate the vocal cords. The voice is not a wind instrument! We don't need to "blow" any air whatsoever through the wind pipe. Air-Flow is just for aesthetic purposes, not to set the vocal cords into motion. This understanding can help students achieve to sing phrases at lengths that they previously did not think possible. AND: Thanks for the 3 stages of breathing, starting from low to up. It's a great help to think of it that way when someone has trouble breathing in a relaxed manner.
Your video is the best explanation with demonstration of breathing control I have seen. I read books and watched other video lessons, and practiced, was still struggling or confusing with different techniques. Now I finally get right instructions that fit me, am feeling confident moving forward with vocal training. Thank you so so much ! I joined to your patreon program for guitar /Uke as well.
Thank you, thank you. I’m ready to add singing to my ukulele playing but know my breath doesn’t support singing after NOT singing for decades. It is sad. But this is a great start and I will practice what you’ve taught us here.
You are great. I have been read, searched for years to understand the breathing. every one is saying differently. I was very tired of trying all and being upset. However, you are perfect. You explain very clearly. I appreciated much. 😁😁😁😁
I am struggling with the support/arrows pushing in part because I am not sure what it's suppose to feel like. Whenever I try to support, my lower abdomen pushes in. Any tips?
The last step in the breathing process is actually gold. I can speak for myself and i focused too much at breathing "into" the stomach that i missed that oppurtunity, now i can easily hit 1-2 Notes higher in every register!
I teach MS & HS Chorus, and I can't wait to share this with my students - your video is so well paced, so clean, and describes this so beautifully. We always do a breathing unit, and you will add so much! THANK YOU!
Hi! You're videos are truly amazing but I still have some question. How do you tell whether you have a good/bad breath support while singing? I've done a lot of exercise for a long time about breathing but when I started to sing, I can't really tell the difference that's why I question myself if I applied what I have learned.
There was a video I saw years ago that explained everything you mentioned in this video. I searched for that video several times this year and could never find it again. I’m in awe right now after watching this. You not only explained everything that that girl did, but you did it in great detail and also explained why you have to do all this. Thank you so much!! God blessed me with this video just now. May He bless you, too ❤
I have a sliding hiatal hernia which seems to be sliding up when I sing because I have massive reflux for days after singing a lot of high notes. I think I'm doing the breath support correctly but not sure.
Hi, thank you for this but i have a question when we exhale we must contract a little obliques but when i contract it it contract my abs this is right ?
This was great, thanks, I been tryin to find out about "brushing your tongue bad breath" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Honulian Wiffy Remover - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my mate got excellent success with it.
Hej. Do I inhale thru my mouth or thru my nose? Also my tongue is gettin tensed up. Do I just allow air to come in because when I Breathe in my tongue falls back into my throat ..

It sounds great but then I sing and breathing goes so fast that I really can't take all this into account! Am I doing something wrong?

@@InsomniaQ Many thanks and you are so right... I suppose one needs to practice, practice and practice and then it becomes a second nature!!!!
what about singers like lady gaga robyn exhaling inhaling on mic after phrase? also how do you calm heavy breathing down after intense concert
can you show how to calm heavy breathing down after intense concert?
the thumbnail is hilarous 😂😂
HAHAHAHAH!!!!! You should see the one that I made for Lip Trills!
lol

Excellent lesson, very similar to how my voice teacher explained it many years ago.

Thank you Katie, I'm a professional singer and I've never heard the breath in such details. Very helpful.
This is the best breath support video I ever found on RUclips. Thanks a lot
woah!!! this is a great tutorial!! i suddenly feel a lot stronger vocally :-)

Also if you are getting a really good deep expansion of the ribs the stomache might come in. However the shoulders shouldn't move much

I have a question, am I supposed to push my stomach to exhale?because it doesn’t go back unless I lay down.
When I try taking deep breaths, I feel tension In my throat (soft palette and behind toung), am I taking in too much air
I have the same problem 😢 hope we'll get an answer soon 🥰
Hi, thank you for this but i have a question when we exhale we must contract a little obliques but when i contract it it contract my abs this is right ?
Great video! Life is about breathing right!
So glad that this helped.
hii i have a song on youtube call surley he able singing live I wont to know if my airflow is ok
I don't sing, my voice in speaking is not good either. I think it brain,mi think too much.
This video was the missing piece I needed!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!! ♥♥♥♥
How exactly do you push down cause I'm confused
Try to focus on flexing the intercostal muscles rather than squeezing the lower part of the abdomen. I hope that helps :).
hi i have a song on youtube call i do anything for you i wont to know if i am singing with support
No matter what i do i can't do this "rib" part, and when i breathe out all of my air is gone in a second no mater how hard i try to control it :(
hi I have a song on youtube call moving on I wont to know if iam breathing right on this song or not
I literally tried standing in the same position as the thumbnail and somehow it worked
I used a straw instead of my fist too blow out seemed to give me more of the feeling from the abs
I don't sing,
Awesome explanation. Really helps a lot. Thank you
thank you
When in exhale isn't it contracting abdomen muscel?
Wow that's very helpful

How can i do this while singing?
Your explanation is devine just like you

I don’t Understand anything how should we do the 2 steps of breathing
My belly does not expand that much. Could that be related to the fact that I am thin?
clear easy to follow and an engaging presentation
why does my body hurt when i try to breathe like that
Maybe you're not really relaxing
I’m still super confused
This helped a lot thanks!
Total concentration breathing
Thanks a lot for the tips!:)
Now I know what is the PURPOSE OF THIS LESSON😪. I think this just an exercise, I don't know that u need to do this while singing😪. Btw thanks
