SquidCake I’ve played the original 14 years ago, as to your answer, it honestly depends, do you want the version with better graphics to play at home, or the less graphical but still beautiful portable version on the 3DS? On a 3DS it would feel awkward, I have yet to play it, but if you wish to see how it originally was, then buy the gamecube version, since the feeling of the controls will probably feel natural, but it’s your choice at the end of the day, I plan to get the 3DS version eventually.
I'd say either is good. The 3ds version has improvements and visually is better in a number of ways, but the controls are a little bit better on Gamecube. Personally I'd suggest the 3ds version.
I'm looking at getting Luigi's Mansion for the 3DS. $40 is quite a price for a remake of a short game compared to the version I can get for the original Gamecube for $20 off eBay. Just wish I could play it portably. Although they did put lots of time and money into making that remake, I just don't know if it's worth the length of the game. Also it's insanely easy to get an A rank on the 3DS version considering coins and other currencies don't disappear as you collect gems, which really ruins the challenge of the game.

It's not flipped tho. So its not PAL version. Its the USA version with the PAL ghost spawns and attacks. Still nice but, flipped (and darker) was crazy. Not to mention you can't get A rank on your first playthrough in the PAL version, there was A LOT more cash in the PAL hidden mansion. So for an A rank you were required to play through twice.
I mean to be fair, NA's version of the original was always super dark, he (or another yter, I forgot who) mentioned that the PAL's Hidden Mansion darkness is the same as NA's standard darkness That being said, having the flipped mansion would have been so cool, but I'm satisfied with the difficulty increase Can't wait to finally be able to do that Hidden Mansion Boolossus fight
I never got to play the original because the GameCube was the one Nintendo console that I never had. I love Dark Moon though and can’t wait to experience the original on 3DS!
You're gonna love it, Dark Moon and the original are so different. I'm glad some people who grew up with Dark Moon are enthusiastic to try the original instead of being biased 😁
I enjoyed Dark Moon a lot more than the first even though I played the first one before Dark Moon came out, only the mission system I disliked in the sequel. The first game is really short.
Dark Moon just never nailed the atmosphere. The gameplay was pretty good, but the missions got really repetitive and capturing ghosts is way more satisfying on Gamecube.

Yeah I noticed this game borrows a couple of textures from Ocarina 3D & Majora's Mask 3D, which isn't all that surprising honestly since it's made by the same team.

lol that would probably be nearly unplayable with all the moves you can (and need) to do. If Luigi's Mansion felt a little bit clunky, I can't picture what sunshine would be like.
I'll be picking this game up, since my original copy on the gamecube doesn't work anymore due to the disk being all old & scratched up since I got the game at launch & this is the perfect chance for me to finally experience it again since I haven't played this game in nearly half a decade & it's nice that I get to play this game on the go. I also think it'll be really cool to finally play this game in 3D, since the original game was built with the intention of being in 3D, so it'll be like I'm finally playing the game that Miyamoto originally visioned it will be like.

Luigi’s mansion is my favorite game of all time, and I’ve been playing it since I was young. I still remember all the times I spent as a kid playing it over n over. It makes me really happy to see get remade like this :D

I have played Luigi’s Mansion hundred of times, the hard challenges were easy, the only difference of the remake is hidden mansion. The ghosts will appear randomly at any room. I love Luigi’s Mansion and I have to say, this remake made this game better and I like it.

The fact that Nintendo was so committed to re-capturing the personality of Luigi's Mansion in this remake(?) (Port? Remaster? 3DS conversion?) Makes me even more excited for Luigi's Mansion 3. I love Luigi's Mansion and I love Dark Moon, but the things that make them both good are very different and the two styles feel rather divorced. If Luigi's Mansion 3 combines the best of the original with the best of the sequel then it has the potential to be better than them both.
Shadow effects are gone with the flash light. They still occur when lightning flashes though (the 3DS can handle a few seconds of the effect, unlike a constant effect with the flashlight.) You can FAINTLY see the effect once you get to the telephone room, unfortunately, due to the size of the textbox...you can barely see it.
I'm so excited to finally be able to play this game after 17 years. I had a GameCube back in the day (and still do), but was unable to find time to do so. Thanks for the review! I'm glad to know this version will be giving me an almost identical experience.
I'm not too surprised that luigi's mansion even got released on the 3DS because let's just be real here at one point it was going to happen because of nostalgia value and possibly a new generation is also at hand next thing you know if they release super mario sunshine the internet is going to explode
Super Mario Sunshine can't run on the 3ds, it's too weak. Sunshine is a very open and large platformer, not a slow paced adventure game that already has graphical and framerate issues.
I don't wanna see Sunshine on the 3DS. Luigi's Mansion is fine. If they did Sunshine, all these cunts would be screaming at people that use the 3DS like it's OUR fault.
So, real talk, for Luigi's Mansion 3, do you think it's a given that Professor E. Gadd and King Boo will be back in that game? I figure they're both staples of the series by this point, though I kind of want to see Waluigi somewhere in the game, too. It's weird that Waluigi's rival hasn't been involved in any of his solo games so far, not to mention I feel like by now, Nintendo realizes there's an audience wanting to see more use out of him. That aside, I hope we get more variety in unique ghosts in the third installment, that was one of my biggest gripes of Dark Moon.

Really happy to hear the hidden mansion is in the remake, looking foward to it! Although I did have a question, if you scan the luigi amiibo, how do you get the golden bones? Do they work like they do in dark moon, where searching random items can sometimes grant you it, or how do you gain one?
You know, getting the PAL Hidden Mansion is almost a similar feeling to finally getting the Final Mix versions of Kingdom Hearts.... Something you hear about, but couldn't experience without importing. I'm glad it's here in this version.
Looking forward to playing it again :D Side note: André complained about PSN trophies because they force people to do things they wouldn't normally do and get in the way of gameplay. Now he complained about Luigi's Mansion system because he got most of them naturally through gameplay. What would the sweet spot be?

I honestly don't mind getting a A ranked mansion on my first walkthrough since that seemed to be the hardest thing in the original game. Though, it's gonna be tough to pick either the original way to catch ghost or with the strobe light from Darm Moon, since i liked that way too.

I actually know why the Luigi's Mansion remake is being made for the 3DS rather than the Switch. Well, I have the answers below. The reasons why the original Luigi's Mansion is being made for the 3DS rather than the Switch is done for budgeting reasons. It's actually more expensive to make an HD console Remake more than a handheld game and they got more money to spend on other games they are working on that even we don't know of, yes I know the Switch is a handheld too but the Switch is also a console too and that is where the expensive part comes from when making the game in two modes. So because of that, it would cost a LOT of development time to make and they would likely make it from the ground up to make the game fresh in graphics and Nintendo would lose a lot of stock money if the HD remake didn't sell very well, even the original GameCube title didn't sell very well from what I found out which is 3.60m copies worldwide, then again the GameCube also failed but not as worst as the Wii U though, even the GameCube is still a good console even today. Dark Moon sold at about 5.32m worldwide and the 3DS is a more successful handheld device as that is selling way more than the Switch at this point. So it's much smarter they put it on the 3DS rather than the Switch. Luigi's Mansion 1 is also a short game so it's rather more suitable to put it as a handheld since console games are usually a bit longer and powerful to handle in its memory storage, putting a short game on a console would seem rather wasteful. Technically all Luigi's Mansion games are handheld so it's basically consistent, Luigi's Mansion 3 is also handheld when it comes to the Switch's mechanics. Plus, purchasing Switch games are more expensive than 3DS games. It's very likely they are using the Dark Moon Engine for easy processing. Like we're going to pay $79.99 for like a 4-5 hour game? That would be quite unfairly expensive, to be honest, and that would cause some major complaints. Yes, it's disappointing but hey what can we do about it? On the bright side, the remake will have new content such as a Boss Rush Mode and Amiibo support. The other reasons are because most people played the second game and don't realize that Dark Moon is the second game in North America which is apparently a translation error. So as the March Direct revealed the remake for the first time, It was said to be made so people who have played the second game can now experience the first one since they haven't originally because of the lack of GameCube sales and that is even more consistent in a way too with Dark Moon so that now makes them both handheld (even though the first game was a console first). Yes, the graphics are a downgrade compared to the original, but we got Luigi's Mansion 3 for the Switch coming in HD so that makes up for that either way, so it's better we got a remake of the first game than not having it at all. Luigi's Mansion 1 was originally going to be 3D but with glasses for the GameCube but it got scrapped altogether. So the 3DS brings back the concept minus the glasses which is even better so it makes things easier without a requirement.
Glad to know it's worth it. I preordered the game but one of the pins in my 3DS cartridge slot broke so I'll have to send it in to Nintendo. Will probably exchange my physical copy for eshop cards and get the game digitally. Want to complete it before giving up my system for like 3 months lol.
I'm a broken record, but I wish this was released in HD in a $99 version of Luigi's Mansion 3 on the Switch. I feel like it would've been good on overall sales. The 3DS is on its way out, so why not put it on a console that people are more likely to buy? :(

I think the low contrast on the Cube version does look better overall. The changed grass, the Boolossus balcony etc is better though in terms of updated appearance. But o well.. I played the Gamecube version a lot as a kid, the PAL Hidden Mansion being featured in the 3DS version is appealing to me though, it'll add a real challenge
I still have one question. The review mentioned that the Hidden Mansion in this game is based on the European version of of the original version. That's good, because the European Hidden Mansion was more difficult than the American and Japanese Hidden Mansion. However, there were more changes to the Hidden Mansion that made it stand out. For example, the entire mansion was mirrored as well. However, in the footage of this review, it seems like the rooms are kept un-mirrored in this version of the Hidden Mansion. Are there more things that changed in this version? Unless I saw it wrong, the 3DS Hidden Mansion might not be identical and maybe even less difficult than the original European version.

Mirroring may sound like a cheap trick, but I think it does work well for the Hidden Mansion. Once the Hidden Mansion is unlocked, players are probably very familiar with all the rooms of Luigi's Mansion. That makes a mirrored Hidden Mansion interesting, because players need to reorient where everything is located. The mirroring will make the rooms of the mansion you know well feel unfamiliar and confusing again, which will make a second playthrough feel a bit more fresh. However, the absence of the mirrored Mansion is indeed not a dealbreaker and this review already made clear that the Hidden Mansion is already hard enough, so it's not really a problem. I was a little worried if more unique changed from the European Hidden Mansion were missing, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Man am I excited to play this on my 3DS! Also I know that this remake/remaster was developed by Grezzo, but did they reused the grass texture from Zelda OOT 3D/MM 3D's for Luigi's Mansion 3DS here at 3:54?
I love the original game so much. When my gamecube died earlier this year, I was so stoked to know there was a remake of one of my favorite games coming to a system that still works in my house. I really enjoyed playing the remake, although the control was very hard to get used to. It's probably the worst part about the game in my opinion, but I probably haven't tinkered with the settings enough to get the similar feel that you have seemed to have gotten. Although it's still not gonna fix the fact that I get some real bad hand cramps while playing the 3ds for too long, but I hope that doesn't really detract from the game. I recommend people pick it up, it's a solid remake that had good changes that a lot of people will like
Judging by the kitchen and the rest of the cut beta elements for the GCN it's sad to see that they didn't make a come back, I really wanted to see that scrapped boss and or that scrapped hunter in the safari room. But either way, this is still a cool way of playing the somewhat original Luigi's Mansion for gamecube on the go.
Well that confirms my theory. I kind of had a feeling they would go and give us the challenging PAL Hidden Mansion. I never played this version of the Hidden Mansion before so I would so get this remake just for that alone.
already pre downloaded the game, never played the original on Gamecube so I knew I wanted to get this. Not really bummed out by the changes since I didn't experience the original, but still interesting to see the changes that were made. Edit: well just to point out, the shadow effect is there, but doesn't act the same as the original, but the flash light still casts shadows.

Same, I've tried cleaning my disc multiple times. Mostly the tooth paste method, at least that worked with my Spider-man 2 disc

Luigi’s mansion is my favorite game of all time, and I’ve been playing it since I was young. I still remember all the times I spent as a kid playing it over n over. It makes me really happy to see get remade like this :D

Luigi’s Mansion made me come to like Luigi more than Mario. He’s terrified nearly the whole time but presses on out of love for his brother. Mario may be fearless, but Luigi is courageous.

I have played Luigi’s Mansion hundred of times, the hard challenges were easy, the only difference of the remake is hidden mansion. The ghosts will appear randomly at any room. I love Luigi’s Mansion and I have to say, this remake made this game better and I like it.

The fact that Nintendo was so committed to re-capturing the personality of Luigi's Mansion in this remake(?) (Port? Remaster? 3DS conversion?) Makes me even more excited for Luigi's Mansion 3. I love Luigi's Mansion and I love Dark Moon, but the things that make them both good are very different and the two styles feel rather divorced. If Luigi's Mansion 3 combines the best of the original with the best of the sequel then it has the potential to be better than them both.

Shadow effects are gone with the flash light. They still occur when lightning flashes though (the 3DS can handle a few seconds of the effect, unlike a constant effect with the flashlight.) You can FAINTLY see the effect once you get to the telephone room, unfortunately, due to the size of the textbox...you can barely see it.
I'm so excited to finally be able to play this game after 17 years. I had a GameCube back in the day (and still do), but was unable to find time to do so. Thanks for the review! I'm glad to know this version will be giving me an almost identical experience.
One of the remakes best features is that the pal version of hidden mansion is now on 3ds! Where in the old one it was practically the same

I've been itching to replay this game for a very long time and now I can and I don't even need to buy a game cube this time.
I'm not too surprised that luigi's mansion even got released on the 3DS because let's just be real here at one point it was going to happen because of nostalgia value and possibly a new generation is also at hand next thing you know if they release super mario sunshine the internet is going to explode
Super Mario Sunshine can't run on the 3ds, it's too weak. Sunshine is a very open and large platformer, not a slow paced adventure game that already has graphical and framerate issues.
not to mention the need for precise controls. A c stick, or second analog stick is necessary.
I don't wanna see Sunshine on the 3DS. Luigi's Mansion is fine. If they did Sunshine, all these cunts would be screaming at people that use the 3DS like it's OUR fault.
So, real talk, for Luigi's Mansion 3, do you think it's a given that Professor E. Gadd and King Boo will be back in that game? I figure they're both staples of the series by this point, though I kind of want to see Waluigi somewhere in the game, too. It's weird that Waluigi's rival hasn't been involved in any of his solo games so far, not to mention I feel like by now, Nintendo realizes there's an audience wanting to see more use out of him. That aside, I hope we get more variety in unique ghosts in the third installment, that was one of my biggest gripes of Dark Moon.

Really happy to hear the hidden mansion is in the remake, looking foward to it! Although I did have a question, if you scan the luigi amiibo, how do you get the golden bones? Do they work like they do in dark moon, where searching random items can sometimes grant you it, or how do you gain one?

I recently got a new 2ds xl and this was the first game I got . I have been a huge Luigi’s mansion fan for a long time.
I'm getting this tomorrow i only beat luigis mansion one time and thats when it first came out on gamecube i probably won't even notice the changes.

You know, getting the PAL Hidden Mansion is almost a similar feeling to finally getting the Final Mix versions of Kingdom Hearts.... Something you hear about, but couldn't experience without importing. I'm glad it's here in this version.

Side note: André complained about PSN trophies because they force people to do things they wouldn't normally do and get in the way of gameplay. Now he complained about Luigi's Mansion system because he got most of them naturally through gameplay. What would the sweet spot be?

I honestly don't mind getting a A ranked mansion on my first walkthrough since that seemed to be the hardest thing in the original game. Though, it's gonna be tough to pick either the original way to catch ghost or with the strobe light from Darm Moon, since i liked that way too.

Unfortunately the "R" button on my 2DS (original not the new 2ds xl) is messed up and also IDK if CAN play it if didn't have whatever the New 2DS XL got that the original didn't. I need some advice.

I want Nintendo to bring this and Dark Moon to the Switch. And man, I sure hope that portrait ghosts make a return in Luigi's Mansion 3. Those were the most fun to capture.
I actually know why the Luigi's Mansion remake is being made for the 3DS rather than the Switch. Well, I have the answers below.
The reasons why the original Luigi's Mansion is being made for the 3DS rather than the Switch is done for budgeting reasons. It's actually more expensive to make an HD console Remake more than a handheld game and they got more money to spend on other games they are working on that even we don't know of, yes I know the Switch is a handheld too but the Switch is also a console too and that is where the expensive part comes from when making the game in two modes.
So because of that, it would cost a LOT of development time to make and they would likely make it from the ground up to make the game fresh in graphics and Nintendo would lose a lot of stock money if the HD remake didn't sell very well, even the original GameCube title didn't sell very well from what I found out which is 3.60m copies worldwide, then again the GameCube also failed but not as worst as the Wii U though, even the GameCube is still a good console even today. Dark Moon sold at about 5.32m worldwide and the 3DS is a more successful handheld device as that is selling way more than the Switch at this point. So it's much smarter they put it on the 3DS rather than the Switch. Luigi's Mansion 1 is also a short game so it's rather more suitable to put it as a handheld since console games are usually a bit longer and powerful to handle in its memory storage, putting a short game on a console would seem rather wasteful. Technically all Luigi's Mansion games are handheld so it's basically consistent, Luigi's Mansion 3 is also handheld when it comes to the Switch's mechanics. Plus, purchasing Switch games are more expensive than 3DS games. It's very likely they are using the Dark Moon Engine for easy processing. Like we're going to pay $79.99 for like a 4-5 hour game? That would be quite unfairly expensive, to be honest, and that would cause some major complaints. Yes, it's disappointing but hey what can we do about it? On the bright side, the remake will have new content such as a Boss Rush Mode and Amiibo support.
The other reasons are because most people played the second game and don't realize that Dark Moon is the second game in North America which is apparently a translation error. So as the March Direct revealed the remake for the first time, It was said to be made so people who have played the second game can now experience the first one since they haven't originally because of the lack of GameCube sales and that is even more consistent in a way too with Dark Moon so that now makes them both handheld (even though the first game was a console first). Yes, the graphics are a downgrade compared to the original, but we got Luigi's Mansion 3 for the Switch coming in HD so that makes up for that either way, so it's better we got a remake of the first game than not having it at all. Luigi's Mansion 1 was originally going to be 3D but with glasses for the GameCube but it got scrapped altogether. So the 3DS brings back the concept minus the glasses which is even better so it makes things easier without a requirement.
Glad to know it's worth it. I preordered the game but one of the pins in my 3DS cartridge slot broke so I'll have to send it in to Nintendo. Will probably exchange my physical copy for eshop cards and get the game digitally. Want to complete it before giving up my system for like 3 months lol.
I'm a broken record, but I wish this was released in HD in a $99 version of Luigi's Mansion 3 on the Switch. I feel like it would've been good on overall sales. The 3DS is on its way out, so why not put it on a console that people are more likely to buy? :(

I think the low contrast on the Cube version does look better overall. The changed grass, the Boolossus balcony etc is better though in terms of updated appearance. But o well.. I played the Gamecube version a lot as a kid, the PAL Hidden Mansion being featured in the 3DS version is appealing to me though, it'll add a real challenge

I still have one question. The review mentioned that the Hidden Mansion in this game is based on the European version of of the original version. That's good, because the European Hidden Mansion was more difficult than the American and Japanese Hidden Mansion. However, there were more changes to the Hidden Mansion that made it stand out. For example, the entire mansion was mirrored as well. However, in the footage of this review, it seems like the rooms are kept un-mirrored in this version of the Hidden Mansion. Are there more things that changed in this version? Unless I saw it wrong, the 3DS Hidden Mansion might not be identical and maybe even less difficult than the original European version.
The only thing that's absent is the mirroring. Everything else is straight from the PAL version.

I'd say mirroring the mansion is a cheap way to make it "harder." Weird that it's not there, but it's no dealbreaker.
Mirroring may sound like a cheap trick, but I think it does work well for the Hidden Mansion. Once the Hidden Mansion is unlocked, players are probably very familiar with all the rooms of Luigi's Mansion. That makes a mirrored Hidden Mansion interesting, because players need to reorient where everything is located. The mirroring will make the rooms of the mansion you know well feel unfamiliar and confusing again, which will make a second playthrough feel a bit more fresh.
However, the absence of the mirrored Mansion is indeed not a dealbreaker and this review already made clear that the Hidden Mansion is already hard enough, so it's not really a problem. I was a little worried if more unique changed from the European Hidden Mansion were missing, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Should I get a new 3ds/2ds for this game? I have the old one. Plus does the c stick work in Luigi’s Mansion 2?

I love the original game so much. When my gamecube died earlier this year, I was so stoked to know there was a remake of one of my favorite games coming to a system that still works in my house. I really enjoyed playing the remake, although the control was very hard to get used to. It's probably the worst part about the game in my opinion, but I probably haven't tinkered with the settings enough to get the similar feel that you have seemed to have gotten. Although it's still not gonna fix the fact that I get some real bad hand cramps while playing the 3ds for too long, but I hope that doesn't really detract from the game. I recommend people pick it up, it's a solid remake that had good changes that a lot of people will like
Judging by the kitchen and the rest of the cut beta elements for the GCN it's sad to see that they didn't make a come back, I really wanted to see that scrapped boss and or that scrapped hunter in the safari room. But either way, this is still a cool way of playing the somewhat original Luigi's Mansion for gamecube on the go.
Well that confirms my theory. I kind of had a feeling they would go and give us the challenging PAL Hidden Mansion. I never played this version of the Hidden Mansion before so I would so get this remake just for that alone.
already pre downloaded the game, never played the original on Gamecube so I knew I wanted to get this. Not really bummed out by the changes since I didn't experience the original, but still interesting to see the changes that were made.
Edit: well just to point out, the shadow effect is there, but doesn't act the same as the original, but the flash light still casts shadows.
