Fun and important fact: If you use the dark light on ghosts, you'll see them while they're invisible, and if you use it long enough against them, they'll taunt, and if a ghost is amored (uses items to protect themselves) and they taunt, you can flash it. People were really harsh on this game at one point, but I absolutely loved it. I never expected a game set in haunted mansions to feel so cosy and charming, but this one somehow managed it! I liked the mission-based levels because it felt like every time I visited each mansion, things changed in subtle ways, meaning that I was always incentivised to explore. I didn’t really mind the lack of ghost variety, although I recall being a little disappointed with the bosses. Overall, I agree - absolute masterpiece!
Hey! The Tough possessor (the knight one) is a great boss! It works alongside the mechanic of bunching up the enemies that you used throughout the entire game, and the massive knight is a big surprise and is a very intimidating set piece!
picked up my 3ds in 2015 for this game specifically. loved it. best game in the series in my opinion. Secret mine is a completley different vibe. its such a shame it only had 3 levels as it was by far my favourite mansion. This game has effected me in way like mario kart wii. (i was a kid at the time) the music, the levels, the nostalgia, the atomosphere, its something truly remarkable. i doubt we will get a game like this in the future
One thing I like about this game is each level it seems that the places get more and more hostile. Gloomy Manor it starts to rain and cobwebs start to litter the place as well as objects disappear. Haunted Towers has the place become not only more waterlogged but plants start to pollute the place. Nothing was more creepy then coming out of the Pixelator only to have a giant Venus Flytrap staring Luigi down and growling at him while it's vines cover up the gate he needs to continue. Old Clockworks becomes filled with sand and dust and the place haves an overall feel of things rusting and breaking down. Secret Mine is set in a harsh winter. As the level progresses the blizzards become more and more violent eventually to the point that Luigi gets snowed in inside the mine's workshop and E. Gadd has trouble contacting him. The Treacherous Mansion is just outright hostile from the get go having all the problems of the previous mansions and more. The mansion also seems to have a dark secret in the form of a vast network of dungeons and labs beneath it giving off the idea that King Boo has a sadistic side to him in torturing his prisoners. The place also starts to fall apart when King Boo activates the Paranormal Portal.
I genuinely really liked Dark Moon. The controls and ghost catching mechanics are significantly more enjoyable than the first game imo, and the Dark Light is one of the coolest introductions to this series by far. While the main story was a little repetitive at times, I'm being completely honest I barely noticed it in my first playthrough. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring all the mansions to get all the gems and 100% the game. The first Luigi's Mansion had the superior spooky vibes, but I prefer Dark Moon's gameplay a lot more.
E.Gadd is the definition of an eccentric and likeable scientiest. I really liked it how he constantly forgot that he had send toads to the mansions and simultaneously admits thats it must be horrible to work for him.
I love Dark Moon but I don't get why people hate the mission base structure of Dark Moon because I think it works perfectly for portable game that's meant to be played in small chunks. Not sure why people treat like it's a big console game they're spending hours at a time playing.
The Mission based Format also let's you form a sense of time. Like in gloomy manor where, over the Missions, the manor grows more and more enwebbed by cobwebs until the penultimate Mission where you clean the manor and then you hop down to the basement in the final Mission to fight a massive spider Boss. It might be a slight surprise but the game made it pretty clear that the gloomy manor had a growing spider infestation, established with the Passage of time that the Mission Mode allows
Hahaha!! Sony Vegas was acting very weirdly during the end of my time with my previous laptop. That’s all I can say to explain it, must have been a rendering issue
Great review, dude. Not gonna lie, I want to seek out a copy now that I know how the game is structured. I can appreciate how the devs want to approach Dark Moon differently than its predecessor.
I love it when combat gets stressful because you are constintly thinking if ghost is there, because they might attack. I find that fun somehow, and my favorite mission is E-5, paranormal chaos
i remember getting this game the day on realese for finishing swimming class when i was like 5 i have like 4000 hours in this game and i never finished it. the nostelgia. when i hear the theme i feel the best.
Great Review Gavin, I loved the jokes you put in to spice it up, and I agree with a lot of your points except for the repetition, I know the dog and toads are reused but they never bothered me because the location made it feel like a bit of a different experience. I agree with you on the gameplay as it feels much better than the first especially in combat. And while the game does have lots of charm I feel like the first game did more in the fact that there were a better variety of ghosts especially with all the special ghosts they put in. I prefer the first game just a tiny bit more because of the non linear style because I just love exploring a huge mansion. The second game is much better structured though
I used to play this game and I was the best, the mansions would always give me images in my head of what they looked like before they were abandoned. This game was my heaven!
It actually already reached roughly 6 million if you look that up in VG Chartz. I know it`s not the most secure web site when it comes to sales managing, but nontheless, they always have some pretty accurate numbers. 5.77 million units.
I mean it is rated really high 90+ by both fans and critics so you can't say it's underrated and it sold really well so it got the props that it deserved. 💯
Totally underrated and overly hated - love all three games and yeah, it's not a good Luigi's Mansion "sequel" as such but it's a brilliant game on its own merit and have played it all the way through loads of times over the years, great review!
Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon is Personally my Favourite Nintendo Game ever The Style The Music The Funny The Spooky The Designs The Atmosphere And also Nostalgia! I love it all! (This Game also gave us Polterpup!)
12:30 what about just letting the ghost pull you for a little? that worked pretty well for me I am not even joking, the ghosts often gather around you, so letting yourself get pulled around to get away from there is (most of the times) pretty succesful
600 hours on the OG. Got the hd remake and it’s as good as the old one. Edit: Tree Topping is my second favorite level, my first is Paranormal Chaos. God damn E-5 hits way too different.
Egad’s phone calls were awesome and I loved the ringtone. It’s a jam. Also nice to see the love for the original “Phat” DS. It’s rough to look at but it’s iconic
I think egadd has the key to the treacherous mansion since it's implied he lived in evershade valley since sometime after luigis mansion 2. We see his Lab in gloomy manor so it's safe to assume he lived there. We know he attended tea parties with the three sister's at the haunted Towers so it's also somewhat safe to assume that he Visited the other mansions too, especially when you consider the installed pixelators in the other mansions. I assume the ghosts owned the keys to the mansions but have given them to egadd as only he and the toads really have use for them. After all the ghosts can just Pass through walls and come and go whenever they want.
it's been many years since this was uploaded but I only found it and I'm glad I watched it all the way through. Put together very well and you explained everything so I understood it all. I own the game since 1 month after it's release and at that time I didn't even know because I was just a 9 year old kiddo. But my 3DS still hasn't given up on me after almost 10 years and I still really love Luigi's Mansion 2. I have these phases where in I play online scarescraper alot and sometimes even replay the story mode (I really lost count how many times I finished it XD). And sometimes I don't touch it for months, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game. I gifted myself a switch for my birthday in december and got myself Luigi's Mansion 3 with it and I'm just amazed of the series and how much I enjoy this. I recently finished LM3 aswell which means I can go back to playing 2 again. I loved it so incredibly much as a kid and growing up with it, it's so much nostalgia when getting back to. I agree on alot of your points said and I'm glad to see someone being this positive about the game. This truly is my favourite 3DS game alongside Mario Kart 7
Did you know you can shine the dark light device onto ghosts holding tools or wearing helmets to make them reveal themselves to be hit by the strobulb? It causes them to taunt or look around.
Oh wow I'm VERY late to this video but I'm still going to comment XD Gotta say, this is easily the best review of luigi's mansion dark moon I've ever seen! Amazing job at basically everything! Just incredible! This game is very important to me personally and it's no doubt my favorite game of all time. It always makes me sad how many people bash on this game and straight up hate it for what it is. So I'm really glad to see that someone else loves this game as much as I do! Omg I can't believe the game came out in 2013 tho omg... It's simple: I see luigi's mansion dark moon, I click no matter how old the video is
I had the luck to have both a gamecube and a 3ds and i played both of these games. Even though i prefer luigi's mansion because of its atmosphere, exploration and ghosts, i have a lot more fond memories for dark moon. I was sad to see the exploration part gone and it is a criticism i have for dark moon, but it more than makes up for it in its amount of content and also variety of settings. Both are 9/10 games for me. I havent had the chance to play lm 3 because i dont own a switch but when i do that is the first game ill buy Luigi's Mansion is a special franchise that i hold dear to my heart.
While having a fully explorable mansion at all times would be just the coolest, I think the game looks phenomenal as it is! Besides, the original was still pretty linear. The keys all went to their single respective spot, so you always visit the rooms in mostly the same order. *cough* _some1 pls make a mod that opens up all of the mansions' pathways at all times with no mission selection_ *cough* I also heard that one of the main complaints about the game came from the limitations if the console itself. That being, not being able to move and aim independently, due to a lack of two sticks. I don't know if the gyroscope is a good replacement for that. It's interesting that you have to restart the mission after you die. It honestly does kinda make you tense for avoiding death, that's kinda what survival horror games do, reset your progress until the last save.
Great review of Dark Moon, probably the best I've seen (and not just cuz it was favorable lol). I think that those of us that prefer the sequel are actually in the minority of the fanbase though. It's always refreshing to hear someone say "linearity does not equal bad" because so many gamers and reviewers seem to genuinely believe this with no actual thought put into the mindset. Linearity is a wonderful thing when the story takes advantage of it and that's exactly what Dark Moon does - it just keeps things fresh and moving. Even missions like the Poulterpup chases are made more annoying by the way they're framed, but in execution they're just as much general fun to me as any other mission. They're absolutely no worse than chasing Boos around the mansion in the first game and more fun to me because they're actually scripted and there's way fewer Poulterpup missions than Boo chases in the original. Really this game only falters with the bosses, and I actually like both the first boss and all 3 bosses in the final mansion. Dark Moon has some FIERCE competition in the 3DS library but overall it's still my absolute favorite game on the system, ESPECIALLY among the original titles (meaning discount remakes like Majora's Mask 3D which is a godly remake of an old masterpiece lol). Most of the fanbase may prefer the original but I for one am incredibly glad that Luigi's Mansion 3 seems to be copying the aesthetic style of Dark Moon, because I just think it suits the series better. This is a fun, goofy, adventurous, occult romp - not an actual horror game like the original's aesthetic implies. Dark Moon captures that perfectly while still being sufficiently creepy.
ThrillingDuck This was such an enjoyable read. I’m glad to see someone is as like-minded as me when it comes to the strengths of linearity. Thank you for the compliments on the review, and thank you for doing your own analysis on the game! :)
As a huge fan of Dark Moon who actually preferred it to the original as well, this video was awesome. This might be a slight hot take, but I actually really like the game's bosses, particularly the Possessors. Sure, they aren't necessarily the greatest gameplay-wise(the devs definitely frontloaded with the Spider Queen), but each one had some level of buildup, and they thematically worked well with their respective mansions. I also actually like the possessor ghosts themselves. The reveal that they even exist is quick and to the point, yet E Gadd immediately notes that they're heads and shoulders above the other ghosts. Despite that, they're displayed to still be pretty wacky themselves in their brief appearances, and you can even spy on the Overset and Shrewd Possessors before their missions. Also, the first letters of their names spell out GHOST, which is a funny detail.
I love love love love this game 🥰 I always have a great memory of me as a kid playing this game in my grandma’s backyard on a nice summer day during a barbecue family party. It was the best
I think that the best aspect of the game is the idea that the ghosts are not the bad guys. They are friendly, just controlled by the King Buu Huu. I think this gives the game so much more depth.

Why does Luigi look like he's part of the Blue Man Group near the end there?
Hahaha!! Sony Vegas was acting very weirdly during the end of my time with my previous laptop. That’s all I can say to explain it, must have been a rendering issue
Luigi looking away like does not care about hostile ghosts is perfect.
Great review, dude. Not gonna lie, I want to seek out a copy now that I know how the game is structured. I can appreciate how the devs want to approach Dark Moon differently than its predecessor.
+The Side Quest Gamer Review Show Good to hear!
this game is my childhood, love it with every part of me.
Dark Moon is my fav Luigi’s mansion game by far, I’m glad to see people share my opinion
IMO, Dark Moon is a supremely tuned and upgraded version of everything the OG Luigis Mansion did. Also I love grinding the scarescraper with friends!
Who has came here from that E3 announcement for the enhanced edition?
My Body Is Ready
It's not enhanced, if anything it'll be the inferior version since there's no 3D.
@@ariocai am also for 3Ds supremacy
What e3 announcement
I love it when combat gets stressful because you are constintly thinking if ghost is there, because they might attack. I find that fun somehow, and my favorite mission is E-5, paranormal chaos
i remember getting this game the day on realese for finishing swimming class when i was like 5 i have like 4000 hours in this game and i never finished it. the nostelgia. when i hear the theme i feel the best.
I'm so happy to find Dark Moon love. I always seemed to be the only one who I've talked to who loved it.
Very simple question with only one real answer
The banger ass ringtone when e gadd calls you
you can use the dark light device in combat to force ghosts holding objects to attack/taunt you
Great Review Gavin, I loved the jokes you put in to spice it up, and I agree with a lot of your points except for the repetition, I know the dog and toads are reused but they never bothered me because the location made it feel like a bit of a different experience.
+Ethendor Reviews Thank you!
I love this game, best luigi's mansion in my mind, also this video is amazing
I used to play this game and I was the best, the mansions would always give me images in my head of what they looked like before they were abandoned. This game was my heaven!
WOW 5 Million that's crazy
XD 1:38
when you talk about the music the colors are inverted, don't know if that's intentional or not
+Ethendor Reviews It’s not intentional. I’ll write a comment about that niw
It actually already reached roughly 6 million if you look that up in VG Chartz. I know it`s not the most secure web site when it comes to sales managing, but nontheless, they always have some pretty accurate numbers. 5.77 million units.
dark moon is one of the most underrated games in the world.
I mean it is rated really high 90+ by both fans and critics so you can't say it's underrated and it sold really well so it got the props that it deserved. 💯
It's now coming to the Switch. Love to see it.
I actually think out of all 3 games dark moon is my favorite! I am so excited that this game is being remade
Same for me it’s ashamed that most people hate it and that the remake doesn’t look as good as Luigi’s mansion 3 so people don’t like the remake
It's a remaster unfortunately
Totally underrated and overly hated - love all three games and yeah, it's not a good Luigi's Mansion "sequel" as such but it's a brilliant game on its own merit and have played it all the way through loads of times over the years, great review!
Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon is Personally my Favourite Nintendo Game ever
The Style
The Music
The Funny
The Spooky
The Designs
The Atmosphere
And also Nostalgia!
I love it all!
(This Game also gave us Polterpup!)
this game got me into the series and i am very thankful i got to experience it
12:30 what about just letting the ghost pull you for a little? that worked pretty well for me
I am not even joking, the ghosts often gather around you, so letting yourself get pulled around to get away from there is (most of the times) pretty succesful
600 hours on the OG. Got the hd remake and it’s as good as the old one.
Edit: Tree Topping is my second favorite level, my first is Paranormal Chaos. God damn E-5 hits way too different.
Glad to see someone else loves this game as much as I do.
Egad’s phone calls were awesome and I loved the ringtone. It’s a jam.
Also nice to see the love for the original “Phat” DS. It’s rough to look at but it’s iconic
10:15 "Weegee Board Mc Mansion" HAHAHAHAHA!
+CorruptEngieJR Fun fact: first line I wrote for the script
Now that's funny.
I wish you could move around in the bunker and that it was bigger so you could do so. Kind of like E gadds lab in the first game
I still prefer the first one, but Dark Moon is still fantastic. Got me into Luigi's Mansion, and it's still the best game to get someone into it.
I loved this game also it was the first 3ds game I played along side ninjago shadow of ronin and is still known as one of my favorite 3ds games ever
it's been many years since this was uploaded but I only found it and I'm glad I watched it all the way through.
Yes I'm not alone!
Did you know you can shine the dark light device onto ghosts holding tools or wearing helmets to make them reveal themselves to be hit by the strobulb? It causes them to taunt or look around.
I’m so excited it’s getting a switch reboot
Oh wow I'm VERY late to this video but I'm still going to comment XD
Gotta say, this is easily the best review of luigi's mansion dark moon I've ever seen!
I havent had the chance to play lm 3 because i dont own a switch but when i do that is the first game ill buy
Luigi's Mansion is a special franchise that i hold dear to my heart.
I remember seeing a luigi mansion dark moon traler in theaters
This format was MUCH BETTER than Luigi's Mansion 1 and 3 honestly, I LOVED IT
27:54 that scared the crap out of me when I played it to me it was scarier then all horror games COMBINED
While having a fully explorable mansion at all times would be just the coolest, I think the game looks phenomenal as it is! Besides, the original was still pretty linear. The keys all went to their single respective spot, so you always visit the rooms in mostly the same order.
*cough* _some1 pls make a mod that opens up all of the mansions' pathways at all times with no mission selection_ *cough*
I also heard that one of the main complaints about the game came from the limitations if the console itself.
Treacherous mansion is my absolute favorite it’s so good
Great review of Dark Moon, probably the best I've seen (and not just cuz it was favorable lol).
Also HOW DID I FORGET that Mario actually calls him "Weegee" in the ending??? That's amazing.
ThrillingDuck This was such an enjoyable read. I’m glad to see someone is as like-minded as me when it comes to the strengths of linearity. Thank you for the compliments on the review, and thank you for doing your own analysis on the game! :)
My Childhood Game. And the best ring tone ever made.
7:47 No no! Bad Doggy!
That alone made my day
You know, I never noticed that the charged suction was using electricity. You're the first reviewer I heard actually touch on that.
My fav 3ds game
34:15 Here is Grand Uncle, the Luigi version of Grand Dad.
0:38 it looks like if Luigi was pressing the control pad
I love love love love this game 🥰 I always have a great memory of me as a kid playing this game in my grandma’s backyard on a nice summer day during a barbecue family party. It was the best
I think that the best aspect of the game is the idea that the ghosts are not the bad guys. They are friendly, just controlled by the King Buu Huu.
I think this gives the game so much more depth.
This is the first video I’ve seen by you and goddamnit I was taken off guard by what your name stood for.
