Fun fact: I used to exercise to the original's minigame music that played when Mario & Luigi worked Bowser's muscles.
Now I'm imagining doing squats and jumping jacks while listening to it XD.

That was my first Mario and Luigi game.and second ever Mario rpg. Bowser's inside story was my second Mario and Luigi game. I get so much nostalgia from PIT.
This game is not only fun, but this game actually helped me go through the toughest years of my life. This will always have a special place in my heart.❤

You know, the celebration of the series when the new villain Mindra steals the Crystal of Resurrection from the caves of the Mushroom Kingdom and brings back the past foes of Mario and Luigi such as Princess Shroob and Fawful? And the Mario Brothers have to team up with Bowser, the Baby Bros, and Paper Mario, finally adding customizable parties to some extent? And they visit the Beanbean Kingdom, as well as P’illo island?

I literally just finished my original Bowser's inside story this morning for first time I have had this game sense I was at lest 8 or 9
I'm 17 now and I just got the remake a few hours ago so far I love it and I love how you can listen to the original music on the sound test I definitely recommend it to any Mario fan this was also my first Mario & Luigi RPG game

The DS emulation on the Wii U is kinda clunky and awkward imo. I'd way rather play the games the way they were intended to be played.
I really hate to say this, but whoever recorded the audio here probably should have had much more practice, they were a little difficult to listen to with the inconsistent pauses and heavy breathing in the mic. Nothing against anything they actually said.

Was going to say the same thing but didn't want to be mean to the reviewer who obviously put some time into this. I love that anyone can upload their work on youtube but I know other outlets have let the reviewer write it and someone else read it-- probably for this reason. Fun review though!
I HEAVILY disagree with the notion that the Bowser Jr's Journey sidemode isn't an improvement over its predecessor Bowser's Minions. There were a good few positive additions:
1.) The ability to see the formations BEFORE you enter battle, thus letting you better build your strategy going in
2.) The "First Officer" function, which allows for even more experimenting with your formation
3.) Game-changing status effects past a certain point (won't spoil when for you folks here in the comments)
Also, I don't know how it was for whoever did the review, but the battle system in BJrJ has been REALLY engaging me. For a fair bit of the battles, I'm either having to use a Captain Command or -- most often -- perform a combo with one (or more) of my mooks. It might not be the same type of engagement as the main mode, but it IS fun imo.
Exactly as expected. The original game is absolutely brilliant (2nd best Mario RPG after TTYD), and it would take a lot for the remake to ruin that, but at the same time, it doesn't really add too much, doesn't really have to exist. Still, nice to have, and I'd highly recommend that ANYONE with a 3DS who doesn't have the original pick this up ASAP.

Well you won't exactly find the original lying on store shelfs and that's reason enough for the remake to exist.
I picked it up on release after having already beaten the original twice. Game's just too good and I was ecstatic to see it in updated graphics. Grinded it the whole weekend and already reached Rainbow Rank with both bros it's soooooo gooooood.

It pains me to say that GameStop didn't even have the game on display. You had to ask them for it.

I went in about a week ago to get a used copy and the GameStop employee gave me the original for the ds. I told him I wanted the 3ds version and he told me that they never remade it on the 3ds. I genuinely think this game was just not cared about by Nintendo. Even at target I still see new copies of the superstar saga remake but I don’t see bowsers inside story anywhere. Really sad to me to be honest.
This makes me realise just how similar BIS and Dream team are. The Giant battles, 2D and 3D sections, characters.
This game AND NSMBU Deluxe. What a great time to be a Mario fan!

I’ve been seeing people say that we are in a state of “Mario and Luigi fatigue”.
But can you really say that when all we had for the last 3 years was 2 remakes?
Most of us want a new game, preferably on the switch with all the upgrades from the newer games like Paper Jam’s tutorial skip and shorter bros moves etc.
Luigi's face in the thumbnail is just so good.

I agree. I hate these blurry-ass, non-emotive sprites. They either need sharper sprites like in the original, or full 3-D models.
I liked Bowser's modern Sprite better in paper jam and dream team. In those games, he was ferocious and vicous, which his in game battle Sprite perfectly depicts imo. He's not as menacing in the games prior to dream team on the 3ds, so it doesn't fit imo.
I don't consider them to be bad, tho. They're not quite as expressive, but I like the way that they look nonetheless.
However, Bowser's angry animation from the DS Mario and Luigi Bowser's inside story... Can't be beat imo.

I agree. One of the reasons why i enjoy playing the remake is because of the new sprites. Playing as bowser in this style for M&L games is pretty cool to me. (Random fact: Bowser’s dream team sprite looks very chunky when compared to his paper jam sprite
i just beat the original today for the 2nd time in years! glad to see that the remake isn't awful. speaking of Fawful, the dark fawful fight was a pain in the ass but a good challenge to prepare people for the final boss

Also, I much appreciate that 2 bosses got unique themes AND that a Giant Gauntlet for Bowser was added. Oh, and item drops from bosses seem to be guaranteed. Either that, Or I got VERY lucky with my Shroob Boots
Uggh, I just found a game breaking glitch in this remake. Because of it, I got nearly half way through it, and I can't ever go any further. It happened in the area where Mario is kidnapped by the sockop. With only Luigi, I went to a save block, saved, and turned the game off. When I turned it on, I just had Luigi, but the game thought I had Mario when I didn't. This caused Luigi to teleport all over the place when he ran into walls and made the game basically crash after I crossed over into another room or through a loading zone. This problem even persists when I restart the game and try it in a different 3ds. I now can't progress in the game at all and am forced to start over. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do?
I have the exact same problem. I’ve searched all over for a solution, but found nothing. I’ve tried reinstalling, copying my save file, nothing works. Hopefully they’ll update it soon.
That sucks. Luckily I happened to not need to save at that part. There needs to be an update because I’ve had 3 error messages so far, all that set back my progress somewhat.
I had a glitch where bowser teleported to completely diferent room in peach castle (nothing dangerous but very weird) when i was using spike roll and in airway in the room before dark star room luigi disappered and on the mini map it was above the room but when entered another room luigi returned idk what would happen if i saved with only mario probably corruput save file
Great review, this is one of the mario rpgs I wish I had got into. Really looks like one of the best M and L games. Plus you can play as Bowser. Come on what more do you need

Hey a Partners in Time remake could work on Switch since that game had literally ONE use of touch screen (so it could be changed for TV mode)
Got this game the day it came out and I'm loving every second!
I think Partners in Time wasn't remade before Bowsers Inside Story because Partners in Time didn't utilize the touch screen much. It did use the Dual screen concept of the DS for a few things but it didn't utilize the touch, which is why I think it was skipped because maybe they'll remake it for the Switch instead? Idk just my wishful thinking.
Bowser's Inside Story was my favorite of the Mario & Luigi series. I much prefer playing as Bowser as the protagonist and would love more games with him taking the lead.
Just wish I was given the opportunity to defeat Mario as Bowser...

Why do people hate on the Bowser's Jr. part? I LOVED the Minions Quest in Superstar Saga, and Bowser Jr. just seems like an upgrade
I hear the new story is fine like minion quest’s, but the gameplay is lacking. Minion quest was also pretty random with how the battles play out, so it’s not as fun for some people (including me) I had to look up a walkthrough... :( The new features in jr’s journey are alright imo and I haven’t had any troubles so far, but I’m mainly playing it for the story. I salute you for how you enjoyed the minion quest when I didn’t.

Minion quest was...eh, barely any strategy (captain commands and support units) and too random (I seem to lose often however) imo, I do like bowser jrs journey more however since it is an upgrade

I kinda understand why Bowser's Inside Story (BIS) was remaked before Partners in Time (PT). In Superstar Saga (SS), one of the villains, Fawful, returns in BIS as the main villain to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom and get his revenge. Basically, BIS is the true sequel to SS. Yes, Fawful appears in PT but not in a important position, being just a shopkeeper in a store that I believe you can beat the game without enter the store once. BIS concludes a story that started in SS, which was remaked in 2017, and that's why I believe PT was skipped from being remaked first. Of course, if we were not at the possible end of the 3DS lifetime, this could be a different story.
Diovani Bressan that is probably the LAST reason for it being skipped. Try this - PiT is the least popular, and as one of the last games for 3ds, BIS would rack up more money

I used to have the original many years ago but we lost it, and with this I can play it again and this time all the way

Still a great game, I like the Rock Paper Scissors game still of the Bowser Jr’s joueney thing. I still like the originals graphics a lot more especially when you were in Bowser’s body. The jump in this version also feels better and is easier to time as the original was very quick.
I still remember when I had to get my mom to mash the x button for me at the final boss before I learned to mash y at the same time.
Once there was a news that alphadream was searching for new employees for two new projects (?) and one fits the nintendo switch console. I would like to open a discussion about the art style: I like that they stayed to a 2d esque art style. Every game looks good. The 3ds games have 3d envoirement but with pixel art 2d sprites that look somewhat 3d. The previos games where basically just pixels, kind of like a drawing. Now how should a Mario Luigi switched mindes (ok bad title) look? I honestly dont wamt a fully 3d game. Yes the envoirement could be 3D but I just want tje games to keep their charm, I mean, every Mario game is 3d now, but those games stand out and since they are rpgs I like the idea that a hand drawn graphic would look like it is a tild story from a book. Hand drawn would be more like the first 3 games. Tjey could also use 3d envoirement but what will their characters look like then? Please keep the charm. The only 3d artstyle that could fit might be cell shade or something that looks towards dragon quest on the switch (which I hope is the diection the new Pokemon games take).
Or ....mario luigi and pokemon go towards the art style of town, that game from game freak
Imagine if Bowser found a way to add the baddies in his body to his army. I know its impossible but I think would be cool additions.

The game looks great, and the new boss themes for two particular bosses that REALLY needed their own themes in the original are awesome! I just replayed the original version of BiS fairly recently so I don’t think I’m gonna get this quite yet. If you’re reading this and haven’t played the original though... STOP READING AND GO GET THE REMAKE!

I enjoy the gameplay of the regular game, but the giant battles just look wrong to me. I feel the previous giant battles such as dream team made the character models look so much better
Mr. Grimsley Good Feel made the Giant Fights in Dream Team, and in BiS it was Arzest Corporation... same people that made Yoshi’s New Island & Hey Pikmin!

My main complaint is the soundtrack not really working well compared to the DS original, especially In The Final losing some of the touches that made the DS track one of my favourite pieces of videogame music.
I'm gonna have to disagree on your statement of "Bowser Jr's Journey doesn't really improve on the gameplay in Minion's Quest."
1) The addition of group attacks allowed for more experimentation when it came to squad formations. The fact that multiple enemies can perform them at once also means you use less captain points to deny. I just thought it was pretty neat.
2) The addition of first officers allows for more captain commands. Sure, some of them were reused from Minion Quest, but some of the newer ones (Stop and Drop or Shield, for example) were helpful a lot of the time. I enjoyed planning out (as much as I could) when to use them and such.
3) The ability to play with the actual formation of your squad to different boosts in battle adds another layer of strategy to the game, as it also determined which troops would attack which enemies first.
4) The ability to see what the upcoming squads are composed of and their formations. In Minion's quest, all they give you is a list of enemies that will appear. I remember how frustrating it was trying to make the most effective squad possible because I didn't know exactly what I was dealing with. In Bowser Jr's Journey, while they don't tell you outright what enemies you'll be facing, they tell you the TYPE as well as how they're arranged. It was easier to figure out which troops would be best to use, and overall it made the game less frustrating than it could have been.
I'm not really sure what you were doing that made the mode such a chore to play, but the entire time I played it most battles were down to the wire and demanded my full attention. It was always stuff like "Should I deny this group attack and risk not being able to perform a showdown later?" or "If I use Parry now I can maximise my CP usage, nice." Though all of this could chalk up to me being way too invested in BJJ for my own good.
Overall, I think BJJ greatly improved on the mechanics introduced in MQ. Sure, the battles are still automatic, but they're more engaging, and you have more control over your squad formation than ever before. I can't really think of a single way MQ is better than BJJ.
(also the writing and music is fantastic as always)

The only real minus to both modes in my opinion is that there are still cutscenes that play the first time you enter an area that you cannot watch again. Why, in a mode with such good cutscenes, and with a menu option designed to let you rewatch scenes tied to battles, can't there simply be an extra space at the start for the area intro scenes? It is such a weird case of going halfway.
But gameplay wise and story wise, both are great, and BJJ definitely improves.

I had one nitpick when i played it, and that's the attack with the dog, the little kitties no longer mew with each attack ;w; only the final kitty mews
I skipped at the start and just heard “fails to make me smile”.
I hate how they changed all the voice clips of Mario luigi and bowser to dream teams. They also made the text sound boring to listen to. Remember in the original most characters had unique text sounds. Like Starlow bowser peach fawful?
Am I the only one who finds it wild that three remasters all came out on the same day?
I'd love to see a Mario & Luigi game with a parallel universe gimmick on the Switch!

Can't believe the original is 10 years old.
I’m surprised that I can’t find any reviews that mention the ugly audio cuts and transitions. Best example: after peach tells m+l about the dark star, the terror theme cuts. Bowser’s castle music starts playing and then immediately ends before remaining silent like it’s supposed to be. Many other such examples exist which makes the game feel less polished than the original did.
I noticed it too, but it’s so minor and quick that it isn’t worth using against the game.

2.) Mario & Luigi: Shroomsanity
With Toadette and her Peachette Transformation
What if they're remaking the mario and luigi series so they can see what they did so great the first time and make an even greater 6th game?

The original version of this game is actually the only M&L game I've played. Nevertheless, I am super hyped for this game!
I might wait 2-3 years to pick this remake up. I only played the DS version of Bowser’s Inside Story a year and a half ago so it just feels too soon to me
I really wanted to see some more comparisons to the original game.
