The genius of Donald Fagen and Steely Dan lies in the fact that many of us heard this song 40 years ago and have heard it dozens (hundreds?) of times since, and it remains fresh, contemporary, timeless and essential 40 years later.
Not only is this a fantastic song, but I think this is one of the best videos of the early MTV era. It's just perfect in the way it captures the mood and theme of the song. I remember being impressed with this when I was a teenager back then, and my opinion hasn't changed a bit.
Was listening to Ticky dont lose that number at age 12...62 now...50 years....saw them twice in 2002 in San Diego and Donald and the Nightflyers in Tampa for my birthday 2017
I'm going to retire at the end of next year. I'm 53 now and will be 55 then. Although I have very nice music equipment to listen to music, I never got my dream system. My treat at retirement is to get that system (stereo tube McIntosh amp and Klipsch Klipschorn AK6's), and this album in vinyl for my first listen. First time I heard this I was 12.
I remember back in the good MTV days my mom decided to watch this with me. She was part of the Greatest Generation and she really enjoyed it. Remember she said “this is really quite good.” She had no clue who she was listening to and really did not like my music.
My Mother (Happy Mother's Day) was born in 1928. She liked these songs when I played them in my room... Flock of Seagulls "I Ran", Pink Floyd "Run Like Hell", and Beatles (George Harrison) "Here Comes the Sun". Otherwise, the majority of musicians in her opinion were creeps. She also liked Benny Hill.
My mom was of the GI Generation, too. She loathed early rock, but came around with post-Revolver Beatles, Genesis, Pink Floyd, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. She had been a Big Band pianist in her youth, and was in awe of Keith Emerson.

Truly, one of the Great Moments Of My Life.
The Nightfly is the greatest album of the rock era (50s to 2000) in my opinion. And I have heard all the other great ones. I would be curious to know what four albums you deem to be even better. Obviously, there's no wrong answer here. It's all subjective. My #2 is Abbey Road #3 is Blonde on Blonde. #4 is Gaucho and #5 is Deja Vu by CSNY. #6 Time Out by Brubeck "#7 Elvis #8 A Night at the Opera #9 Rubber Soul #10 is Aja.
Pretty much in agreement with the possible exception of Elvis! However, you are correct, there is NO wrong answer my friend. As much as I love Brubeck, there are so many other jazz greats! If you've never heard it consider Thelonious Monk's "Straight, no chaser!" I consider that to be a masterpiece in how few notes he managed to employ, IF that makes any sense. But, my word, now you've given me an almost impossible task. In no particular order, and only for the present moment as my mind contemplates your question: Pink Floyd's "Division Bell and also "A Momentary Lapse of Reason." I, also test out tons of audio gear (mostly headphones and headphone amps because I live in a townhouse in Brooklyn, NY and can't blast me Legacy speakers at 1AM in the morning)....and thus I could wax poetic on how many albums and genres of musica are what I would consider "Desert Island Discs," so to speak! Would love to hear back friend!

Happy 40th Anniversary to Donald Fagen's The Nightfly. One of music's very first digital recording LPs by the help of 3M. Personally, this is one of the greatest 'Blue-Eyed Soul' Album ever made.
This is one of those music videos that stick with you for life. The Nightfly was such a groovy album - it really captured the vibe of an almost forgotten, magical time in American music, before the Beatles, the Stones, et al. invaded our airwaves. Now don't mistake me, I'm glad the British Invasion came along, but there's something pure and honest about this music and the cultural memories it invokes.
Bought this album when I was 16 growing up in Scotland. Blew me away immediately. The video was the icing on the cake. Have listened to the album all these years. Never would have thought it would sound so fresh 40 years on. The DDD (digital mix, master and media) was pioneering then. But the musicianship and engineering are what really stand out. Thank you Donald. The effort you put into this album was appreciated then, now and probably forever.
Uncanny a fellow Gemmell also from Scotland Though Gemmell is my middle name I too bought this record in my teens and timeless dosnt cover it Flawless from start to finish ❤
Not only is the music composition far and away above anything else, but as always, the lyrics are pure genius. We're blessed to have grown up with Donald and Walter.
I was 19 years old when I first heard this song. Tomorrow, I turn 60 and this song is still awesome to me. Of course, that may because I'm about to leave middle age and become an old man......
Donald Fagen demonstrated that he was more than capable of striking out on his own with this gem of a tune. A perfect blend of pop and jazz. Wonderful music to listen to under the stars on a warm summer night. And the video! A lot of early 80s videos were so cringe worthy but this is so classy and vibes perfectly with the song.
Thanks Donald. Brought tears to my eyes. Are we going to see some new material? No pressure. God knows you've already given us more than we probably deserve. I've been obsessively listening to Everything Must Go for months...
Saw an interview with him yesterday that he had written material during the quarantine and was about to begin recording....hopefully something he will share with us if he's happy with it. So...chin-up!
@@RoyalBlue43 Lol! Those fucking lyrics, right?? And they are, of course, completely prophetic. The song is twenty years old. But it reads and plays like it was released yesterday: It's high time for a walk on the real side Let's admit the bastards beat us I move to dissolve the corporation In a pool of margaritas So let's switch off all the lights Light up all the Luckies Crankin' up the afterglow 'Cause we're goin' out of business Everything must go Talk about your major pain and suffering Now our self-esteem is shattered Show the world a mighty hidey-ho face As we go sliding down the ladder It was sweet up at the top 'Til that ill wind started blowing Now it's cozy down below 'Cause we're goin' out of business Everything must go We gave it our best shot But keep in mind we got a lot The sky, the moon, good food and the weather First-run movies-does anybody get lucky twice? Wouldn't it be nice... Tell me can you dig it Miss Fugazy Now it's gone from late to later Frankly I could use a little face time In the service elevator And if Dave from Acquisitions Wants to get in on the action With his Handicam in tow Well we're goin' out of business Everything must go Can it be the sorry sun is rising Guess it's time for us to book it(to book it) Talk about the famous road not taken In the end we never took it And if somewhere on the way We got a few good licks in No one's ever gonna know 'Cause we're goin' out of business Everything must go
I stayed up many a night, into the wee hours, in the summer of 1983, hoping that MTV would play this video. It was and still is my all time favorite music video. Great music video, Great song and a great album. I wore out my Night Fly cassette tape years ago. The only way you could get this video was to buy the Night Fly DVD album, but this is even better, because it is 1080p! We waited 40 years for this to come out and it was worth it. Thank you Mr. Fagen.
As Pepperidge Farm remembers, I too along with the legion of those fortunate to have lived in this time depicted can appreciate the nostalga and joy amidst all the craziness of that era. To those born too late, look and listen to this as an accurate history lesson and what should have continued - the positive outlook and hope.
Love Fagen's mention of Brubeck here ... I was born in 1956, and grew up for the first few years hearing Dave's music played by my parents back then. Part of the soundtrack of my life since. Fagen - with or without Becker - one of the contemporary geniuses even now some 40 to 50 years after most of their best work. It's timeless and brilliant, something that is lost when they performed live (similar to the Beatles after 1964). The Dan made sure they got the best studio musicians they could find (such as Larry Carlton) and that was key - never a wasted note, driven by an overall sense of vision.
I was a teenager in the 70s and SD were mezmerising and stunning for me as i got older. I was working at a major record label for a few years in the early 80s and The Nightfly was released on our label. I still recall the intense buzz and surreal feeling it was to be around people who were, like me, stunned by this masterpiece album. Superb all over.
Steely Dan is THEEE most complex easy listening, music with meaning AND a groove in the ENTIRE rock realm! There's simply no one else like them! Even the NAME Steely Dan is sublimely wicked! How many don't have a clue 😅
Getting awfully nostalgic watching this. Half warm and fuzzy, and half gripped with fear and horror! Times may change but the bit where she takes his glasses off and wears them remains the hottest moment of the eighties! Indestructible greatness
Donald Fagen simultaneously celebrating and mocking peak JFK with irresistible hooks and signature Steely Dan intervals. "Let's party in my Dad's bomb shelter". Brubeck, Camelot, the Jetsons .... it's all there. So smart and so good.
I uvijek, uvijek me ipresionira projekt Steely Dan, donald with high imagination ekipa vrsni poznavatelji istraživači, muzika daleko odudara od običnosti samo teče.. Hvala vam ❤
Remember this gem from the early good ole days of MTV...About 1982...This video and single were released in 1982, before the album in 1983. I love the 60s Beatnik Lounge style of art and animation in the video, with the 60s Peace sign at the closing. Awesome.
This song/video got me to buy “The Nightfly” on CD… it has been on every portable device that I have owned of the yrs. I have not seen this video in a long time and it still gives me thrill whenever I hear it. Even now in 2022 it still thrills me. Thank you for posting this video.
"Thank You" somehow seems quite inadequate to show my appreciation for everything Donald Fagen et al have given this world, but since that's all I've got it'll have to do. Your music lets me soar.
Great song. Great music. And let's not forget the awesome video itself. It was produced & directed by Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton of Cucumber Studios, UK, 1983. It was one of the best videos of the early MTV era. They did other ones incorporating animation - eg for TomTom Club, Elvis Costello, etc....but this is their best, a masterpiece in my humble estimation!
Every time I play this song I’m taken back to when the FM radio played it hourly. MTV and that area was a great time to be alive and being obsessed with rock music. I’m 66 now and still an old hippie. Life is good! Enjoy it, it’s truly a new frontier.
As a musician beginning my life long musical trek around '77-ish, a friend gave me a "Royal Scam" album and my whole musical entity changed forever...in a good way of course. I've said it before and I'll say it till I die...anyone under 50 has no clue what real...honest musical history defining music is! Royal Scam is the epitome of Steely Dan. The "Dan" are with us forever. Walter RIP.
What's so great is the way that the video so beautifully and nostalgically captures the essence of the song and indeed the whole album. Which, if you counted it a Steely Dan album, one could argue, is even including Aja the best Steely Dan album of them all.
I heard this song and watched the video on my first date in college in 1983. Had forgotten about it until I heard a few chords on NPR this morning. It came back into my head, and now it's permanently in my spotify library.
May you hear it many more times. I still remember hearing this and I.G.Y. Played on AM radio in 1982 as a promo of the album. I have album on CD and vinyl. New Frontier is a wonderful song. Great music lasts.

Never would have thought it would sound so fresh 40 years on. The DDD (digital mix, master and media) was pioneering then. But the musicianship and engineering are what really stand out. Thank you Donald. The effort you put into this album was appreciated then, now and probably forever.
Forever indeed.
Uncanny a fellow Gemmell also from Scotland
Though Gemmell is my middle name
I too bought this record in my teens and timeless dosnt cover it
Flawless from start to finish ❤
Thank you Master Donald 👍👍👍❤️
Since Igot to to know them by an american friend, I never stopped to listen to their tunes and to Love them. 💖💖💖
What great visuals....mid century modern vibe
The whole album is great and the concept behind it melts effortlessly together with the music.
Naw dude, 60 does NOT make you an old man. Especially since I turn 60 next month!
@@larrybush1664 You may be a little biased about age, my friend...LOL!
Fabulous classy song ❤️
as someone who remembers this debut on MTV back in the day, i'll take the most cringeworthy 80s video over anything from the present era
@@vap0rland The present era videos are already cringy.
From Gus, in southwest Ireland🎉 totally 👏
One of best sounding records in history. A tour de force. Fagan is a musical genius
Great video, does Justice to the music ..😊
Thanks Donald. Brought tears to my eyes. Are we going to see some new material? No pressure. God knows you've already given us more than we probably deserve. I've been obsessively listening to Everything Must Go for months...
Saw an interview with him yesterday that he had written material during the quarantine and was about to begin recording....hopefully something he will share with us if he's happy with it. So...chin-up!
@@donbailey6600 I would be stoked for new Fagen solo albums. Morph the Cat and all others are delightful to listen to.
I move to dissolve the corporation
@@RoyalBlue43 Lol! Those fucking lyrics, right?? And they are, of course, completely prophetic. The song is twenty years old. But it reads and plays like it was released yesterday:
It's high time for a walk on the real side
Let's admit the bastards beat us
I move to dissolve the corporation
In a pool of margaritas
So let's switch off all the lights
Light up all the Luckies
Crankin' up the afterglow
'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
Talk about your major pain and suffering
Now our self-esteem is shattered
Show the world a mighty hidey-ho face
As we go sliding down the ladder
It was sweet up at the top
'Til that ill wind started blowing
Now it's cozy down below
'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
We gave it our best shot
But keep in mind we got a lot
The sky, the moon, good food and the weather
First-run movies-does anybody get lucky twice?
Wouldn't it be nice...
Tell me can you dig it Miss Fugazy
Now it's gone from late to later
Frankly I could use a little face time
In the service elevator
And if Dave from Acquisitions
Wants to get in on the action
With his Handicam in tow
Well we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
Can it be the sorry sun is rising
Guess it's time for us to book it(to book it)
Talk about the famous road not taken
In the end we never took it
And if somewhere on the way
We got a few good licks in
No one's ever gonna know
'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
I stayed up many a night, into the wee hours, in the summer of 1983, hoping that MTV would play this video. Fagen.
After homework, dinner, you go to Rock's house to play Spades and this comes on MTV..... Priceless,!!!
This is almost as great as The Dave Brubeck Quartet Time Out album shown! Thumbs up if you have both this and that! 😎👍🏽
Coincidence, the track I listen to before this was Brubeck take five…
odd.
Both great albums, but how about Art Blakey - Moanin, or Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue?
He's an artist, a pioneer. We've got to have the music on the new frontier.
Such a perfectly constructed and played tune. Timeless.
This song brings me so much happiness. It's musical perfection, and the drums and guitar in this are incredibly complex.
Superb all over.
woah...futurism...in hindsight?
It was a few years till i realised he had assembled 5 of his favourite bassists to play on The Nightfly. Its depth of quality is outstanding.
Donald remains MY favorite musician of ALL TIME! Much love & respect for the man! Pure GENIUS!
The artist as a young man reflecting on the - musical - past and a future that never happened (yet). A timeless record and Fagen´s masterpiece.
One of the best videos ever made. Hats off to Mr Fagen.
For sure!
Never would I have imagined that this tune had a music video, and a terrific one none the less! This whole album is beyond words!!
Donald Fagen simultaneously celebrating and mocking peak JFK with irresistible hooks and signature Steely Dan intervals.
"Let's party in my Dad's bomb shelter".
Brubeck, Camelot, the Jetsons .... it's all there.
So smart and so good.
Still a killer song of wry nostalgia.... From a stellar album!
The video is very stylishly well done & holds up well today.
*Pure Genius.* 🎸
This song is magic. I love it!!
Grazie Donald! Quante emozioni riascoltare The Nightfly con le sue meravigliose canzoni, la mia colonna sonora dell'estate 1983!
Io avevo solo 10 anni ma ricordo benissimo il video che passava di continuo su Videomusic.
I typically listen to Hard Rock/ Classic Metal etc. but I love this song! Who could NOT like this song?! It is so infectious
Perfection and grace...
It's the smile on my face...
Tonight when I chase the dragon..@@IJR_RACING
I uvijek, uvijek me ipresionira projekt Steely Dan, donald with high imagination ekipa vrsni poznavatelji istraživači, muzika daleko odudara od običnosti samo teče.. Hvala vam ❤
40 plus years later, it will never get old 😁
God how I miss music.
Music has missed you. the vibe never left, you just needed to return!
What do you mean??? Don't you know about Cardi B?!!! 😂😂😂
Part of the soundtrack to my life
Ahhh the memories…..
Yes.
My parents had the Brubeck album ❤I was at a party and there was a high school trio playing Brubeck. Still so relevant.
Superb Fagen tune. Clever video ...
Remember this gem from the early good ole days of MTV...About 1982...This video and single were released in 1982, before the album in 1983. I love the 60s Beatnik Lounge style of art and animation in the video, with the 60s Peace sign at the closing. Awesome.
The tempo, harmony, and lyrics... It's why God uses it for Lobby music!
This song/video got me to buy “The Nightfly” on CD… it has been on every portable device that I have owned of the yrs. I have not seen this video in a long time and it still gives me thrill whenever I hear it. Even now in 2022 it still thrills me. Thank you for posting this video.
One of my most favourite albums. It's been with me a long time. ❤️
This singer/musician is a genius. And so is the artist who painted those pictures.
"Thank You" somehow seems quite inadequate to show my appreciation for everything Donald Fagen et al have given this world, but since that's all I've got it'll have to do. Your music lets me soar.
That dissonant piano fill is so good.
Great, any update are appreciated. Thanks for all of the music
Have always loved this video and what strikes me is that, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
In praise of DF and SD. Remember 1982 with vivid clarity. Lifelong fan. Saw SD in ‘96, ‘03, and ‘17.
Awesomely Brilliant !! 👊🏻
Every time I play this song I’m taken back to when the FM radio played it hourly. MTV and that area was a great time to be alive and being obsessed with rock music. I’m 66 now and still an old hippie. Life is good! Enjoy it, it’s truly a new frontier.
I am from Brazil, i lke so much this song....show!!!
Truly one of the greatest music videos of all time.
Awesome song I love this
As a musician beginning my life long musical trek around '77-ish, a friend gave me a "Royal Scam" album and my whole musical entity changed forever...in a good way of course. I've said it before and I'll say it till I die...anyone under 50 has no clue what real...honest musical history defining music is! Royal Scam is the epitome of Steely Dan. The "Dan" are with us forever. Walter RIP.
Quality music never goes out of style
Now I have nostalgia for something that was already nostalgic back then. A strange kind of double-nostalgia? Double the exquisite pain!
The king of cool, DF!
Oh yes
Loved this song since it popped up on MTV in 1983.
Everybody saying how many times they have heard this song. This was my first time. (Then again, I’m 26).
Same but I'm in my 50s. Never heard it in my life!
May you hear it many more times. I still remember hearing this and I.G.Y. Played on AM radio in 1982 as a promo of the album. I have album on CD and vinyl. New Frontier is a wonderful song. Great music lasts.
I love that you're 26 and have an old Houston Oilers derrick for your symbol, despite them being gone before you were born. Mad props.
What a good song ! Love from France 🥰
In 1982 I was at college and almost every student had a copy of the Nightfly 40 years later I listen to this album almost every month a masterpiece !
Apparently college students had great taste back then, not so much now.
@@ViciousAlienKlown Correct we grew up in the 70’s the golden age of music imo Steely Dan, EWF, Doobie Brothers, Donald Fagen, Michael Franks, Kenny Rankin, Joni Mitchell etc most of the new generation have no clue how lucky we where !
@@savariaxa I was just listening to Donald Fagan this morning. A New Frontier.
