Lyrics
Yes we're gonna have a wingding
A summer smoker underground
It's just a dugout that my dad built
In case the reds decide to push the button down
We've got provisions and lots of beer
The keyword is survival on the new frontier
Introduce me to that big blonde
She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld
She's wearing Ambush and a French twist
She's got us wild and she can tell
She loves to limbo, that much is clear
She's got the right dynamic for the new frontier
Well I can't wait 'til I move to the city
'Til I finally make up my mind
To learn design and study overseas
Do you have a steady boyfriend
Cause honey I've been watching you
I hear you're mad about Brubeck
I like your eyes, I like him too
He's an artist, a pioneer
We've got to have some music on the new frontier
Well I can't wait 'til I move to the city
'Til I finally make up my mind
To learn design and study overseas
Let's pretend that it's the real thing
And stay together all night long
And when I really get to know you
We'll open up the doors and climb into the dawn
Confess your passion, your secret fear
Prepare to meet the challenge of the new frontier
The genius of Donald Fagen and Steely Dan lies in the fact that many of us heard this song 40 years ago and have heard it dozens (hundreds?) of times since, and it remains fresh, contemporary, timeless and essential 40 years later.
well said! absolutely!
yeah it's still pretty fresh since we're on the brink of another nuclear war
A song I listened to, thousand of time, and still now ❤
the problems of fagen's time are still here 💀
One of my favourite artists and bands.
Never get tired to listen it across years since I've discovered it in the 80'.
Classy, jazz-tinged rock, cute animation, a romantic tryst, and the grim specter of nuclear annihilation. What’s not to love?
What a writer?? Sweet
epic commentary, dude
Totally agree.
Peace and love musique !
Cute animation? Okay
I bought The Nightfly on a whim, knowing just a couple of Steely Dan songs. Must have been one of the luckiest days of my life.
You ain’t bullshitting. Ruby Baby might be the only weak track and I think it’s not his composition.
@@jaycee30865written by Jerry Leiber and Bob Stoller originally recorded by The Drifters and re-recorded by Dion and the Belmonts. Donald Fagan put his blues twist on it to make the best recording of it. My favorite besides this one is The Nightfly
@@pattybenedict9499 I think Maxine is outstanding. the whole album is pretty flipping outstanding. My dad wore it out and it was a CD. :) I miss him constantly. Never take anything good for granted. New Frontier is an absolute classic too. Fagan the obvious 97% of Steely Dan's IQ.
Wearing Ambush and a french twist... Fagen is never ever without the perfect lyric.
You should listen to "Things I miss the most"
Never !
This is one of those albums that you can't pick a favorite song because they're all so good.
Wanna class-up a party? Put this on
Let's not kid ourselves... all of Donald's work goes GREAT with the fine colombian.
Indeed. Along with "Songs In The Key Of Life".
@@stanvans3214 lol. yes!

I did pick a favorite, though. The Nightfly goes a tad harder than the rest for me.
Not only is this a fantastic song, but I think this is one of the best videos of the early MTV era. It's just perfect in the way it captures the mood and theme of the song. I remember being impressed with this when I was a teenager back then, and my opinion hasn't changed a bit.
Makes me miss the 80's. I was on top of the world then.
Agree. Very impressive and creative. I can see people drawing inspirations from this video.
BEST VIDEO EVER
Not one of the best...the best
Agreed, when I first saw this video it was early 80’s, late at night and I thought I was dreaming !
That Brubeck transition is one of the greatest visuals i've ever seen in a music video.
I'm 50 years old and have had Donald and Steely Dan in my ear for 40 of them.. I'll take 40 more !!!!!!!!
Was listening to Ticky dont lose that number at age 12...62 now...50 years....saw them twice in 2002 in San Diego and Donald and the Nightflyers in Tampa for my birthday 2017

@phriedokra6158 that is very cool !! I saw them at Shoreline in Mountain View California it was a great night

That sums it up !!!!!
i have NEVER been so pleasantly surprised by a music video...and its from 83...what a great short story and artwork ....oh my good Lord
I remember back in the good MTV days my mom decided to watch this with me. She was part of the Greatest Generation and she really enjoyed it. Remember she said “this is really quite good.” She had no clue who she was listening to and really did not like my music.
My Mother (Happy Mother's Day) was born in 1928. She liked these songs when I played them in my room... Flock of Seagulls "I Ran", Pink Floyd "Run Like Hell", and Beatles (George Harrison) "Here Comes the Sun". Otherwise, the majority of musicians in her opinion were creeps. She also liked Benny Hill.
I'm going to retire at the end of next year. I'm 53 now and will be 55 then. Although I have very nice music equipment to listen to music, I never got my dream system. My treat at retirement is to get that system (stereo tube McIntosh amp and Klipsch Klipschorn AK6's), and this album in vinyl for my first listen. First time I heard this I was 12.
Same here
This beautiful track has the sad, wistful quality, of a golden age saying goodbye.
Nice words, sums it right up 😊
God how I miss music.
Music has missed you. the vibe never left, you just needed to return!
What do you mean??? Don't you know about Cardi B?!!! 😂😂😂
At 73 I still enjoy and appreciate Donald's music
Arguably one of the 20 greatest songs EVER RECORDED!!🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉
Just stumbled on it ( again ) You could be right Video just enhances it Oh yea back when we had videos
The video is full production Thought went in to it Song just absolutely JAMZ
I never get tired of hearing this song since I bought The Nightfly album in 1983. Have it on
CD too of course. Listen close to the drums and percussion. More going on than you think. Perfect ending to the song too.
Will go down in history the best top 10 album of all time next to Aja ❤️
I think that's WENDLE... The DRUM MACHINE.
I discovered "The Nightly" purely by accident. As a kid, I found the cassette in a discount bin for 99¢ & decided to take a chance on it. One of my greatest accidental finds to this day.
@@charlielinville1384 Well Kudos to Wendle and his programmer. I don't remember all the liner notes but I know a bunch of top session people of the time worked on that album. Might as well been an SD album in that respect. I do remember Rob Mounsey's Roland Jupiter 8 coming up for sale several years ago. He used it for the arpeggios that you hear in the opening of IGY. Good stuff on every track!! 🙂
@@amantedelcane420 I think I got the album as a "cut out" for $3.99 and, like you, found the cassette for 99¢ not long after and bought it too. Wore it out.
Everybody saying how many times they have heard this song. This was my first time. (Then again, I’m 26).
Same but I'm in my 50s. Never heard it in my life!
May you hear it many more times. I still remember hearing this and I.G.Y. Played on AM radio in 1982 as a promo of the album. I have album on CD and vinyl. New Frontier is a wonderful song. Great music lasts.
I love that you're 26 and have an old Houston Oilers derrick for your symbol, despite them being gone before you were born. Mad props.

Kinda strange how music is such a universal language and this is also a provocatively dazzling music video.
I literally could not say how many times I have listened to this song. This album is in my top five of all time, and is my go-to song for testing out the bazillions of pieces of stereo equipment that I have bought in my life. This album is Sonic perfection, as well as being artistic perfection. Had the privilege of seeing Donald Fagen and the night Flyers perform all of this album, and found myself surprised to be crying like a baby when this song was played. I never thought I would get a chance to hear one of my most favorite songs in the history of the world performed live in front of my eyes by the original artist. Truly, one of the Great Moments Of My Life.
this brings tears to my eyes as well. such an unexpected reaction.
I feel ya my brother!
Yeah. X 💯
The Nightfly is the greatest album of the rock era (50s to 2000) in my opinion. And I have heard all the other great ones. I would be curious to know what four albums you deem to be even better. Obviously, there's no wrong answer here. It's all subjective. My #2 is Abbey Road #3 is Blonde on Blonde. #4 is Gaucho and #5 is Deja Vu by CSNY. #6 Time Out by Brubeck "#7 Elvis
#8 A Night at the Opera #9 Rubber Soul #10 is Aja.
Pretty much in agreement with the possible exception of Elvis! However, you are correct, there is NO wrong answer my friend. As much as I love Brubeck, there are so many other jazz greats! If you've never heard it consider Thelonious Monk's "Straight, no chaser!" I consider that to be a masterpiece in how few notes he managed to employ, IF that makes any sense. But, my word, now you've given me an almost impossible task. In no particular order, and only for the present moment as my mind contemplates your question: Pink Floyd's "Division Bell and also "A Momentary Lapse of Reason." I, also test out tons of audio gear (mostly headphones and headphone amps because I live in a townhouse in Brooklyn, NY and can't blast me Legacy speakers at 1AM in the morning)....and thus I could wax poetic on how many albums and genres of musica are what I would consider "Desert Island Discs," so to speak! Would love to hear back friend!
One of the greatest video clip ever made.
❤It Certainly is an Upgrade from "Money For Nothing" by DS and Mark Knoper😊🍄🌹
I love how DF created a perfect 1950s atomic age and futurism video in the early 80s. He truly captured his and my parents youth era with cool animation along with such a perfect album. But because this video was so great it played for years after.
More like 60s style, not 50s. Down to the Lounge bossa nova sounds and Beatnik art, to the car styling and the Peace sign at the end.
@@ryoamora8655Yes I see what you mean. I guess I often think of the late 50s and 60s of a "time" but call it the 50s. You're so right with the mention of Beatniks and Jazz and Tuesday Weld and Brubeck.
My Dad graduated h.s. in '61 and he was definitely a Beatnik but one who was also into motorcycles and cars. He always jokes with me that he loves music but has no ability to play any instrument except maybe something like "The electric gourd" if it existed. He's a funny guy. At 80 he's more active than I am at 48.
My parents met at a Byrd's show 4th of July weekend 1965 at the Whisky A Go-go. The Doors were the openers but in all honesty people didn't fawn over them as the standard bar/opening act😂 on the Strip as much as history likes to believe. But that's a whole 'nother story.
Thanks for your reply!
Happy 40th birthday to one of the best records ever made

Donald Fagen simultaneously celebrating and mocking peak JFK with irresistible hooks and signature Steely Dan intervals.
"Let's party in my Dad's bomb shelter".
Brubeck, Camelot, the Jetsons .... it's all there.
So smart and so good.
That dissonant piano fill is so good.
40 plus years later, it will never get old 😁
This is almost as great as The Dave Brubeck Quartet Time Out album shown! Thumbs up if you have both this and that! 😎👍🏽
Coincidence, the track I listen to before this was Brubeck take five…
odd.
Both great albums, but how about Art Blakey - Moanin, or Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue?
What great visuals....mid century modern vibe
Because of the way things are going, that peace symbol at the close tore me up.
Thank you Master Donald 👍👍👍❤️
Loved this song since it popped up on MTV in 1983.
I loved that album then. I still listen to it today 😀😀😀
The bridge is still one of my favorite chord progressions ever (The part that starts with 'Well I can't wait')
The bridge makes the whole tune
Me too!! The harmony along with Fagan's delivery seals the deal
Yep, it's fantastic. So many nuggets like this throughout the Steely Dan and Fagen solo catalogs, hard for me to pick favorites.
Probably in the top 3 most played songs of my life. Never gets old. Goes with everything from a perfect summer day to an all-night blizzard. How does he do it? I love all the SPACE in the verse, with each line dropping into a mile-deep groove. Also amazing is the stylistic blend. Blues? Rock? Lounge? Funk? Jazz? They're just different sides of the same die. And who else would write a song about hooking up in a fallout shelter?
😆😆😆😆😆😆when we could actually laugh at this......
Quality music never goes out of style

Sounds great! One of Fagen's many classic songs, "The Nightfly" is a complete masterpiece.

I was in the 8th grade when this song came out, saw this video on MTV and I'm still enthralled, not with just nostalgia but with it's unique, captivating, and just such fluid sound... will never ever get tired of listening to this masterpiece!!
After homework, dinner, you go to Rock's house to play Spades and this comes on MTV..... Priceless,!!!
The whole album is great and the concept behind it melts effortlessly together with the music.
The Nightfly and Aja are my best “go to” albums for sounf system demonstration. BTW, 60 years later Russia still threatening to push the button.
Right 60 years of fear on and off
Not only is the music composition far and away above anything else, but as always, the lyrics are pure genius. We're blessed to have grown up with Donald and Walter.
Never knew this existed...timeless
Donald Fagen demonstrated that he was more than capable of striking out on his own with this gem of a tune. A perfect blend of pop and jazz. Wonderful music to listen to under the stars on a warm summer night. And the video! A lot of early 80s videos were so cringe worthy but this is so classy and vibes perfectly with the song.
Fabulous classy song ❤️
as someone who remembers this debut on MTV back in the day, i'll take the most cringeworthy 80s video over anything from the present era

I move to dissolve the corporation
@@RoyalBlue43 Lol! Those fucking lyrics, right?? And they are, of course, completely prophetic. The song is twenty years old. But it reads and plays like it was released yesterday:
It's high time for a walk on the real side
Let's admit the bastards beat us
I move to dissolve the corporation
In a pool of margaritas
So let's switch off all the lights
Light up all the Luckies
Crankin' up the afterglow
'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
Talk about your major pain and suffering
Now our self-esteem is shattered
Show the world a mighty hidey-ho face
As we go sliding down the ladder
It was sweet up at the top
'Til that ill wind started blowing
Now it's cozy down below
'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
We gave it our best shot
But keep in mind we got a lot
The sky, the moon, good food and the weather
First-run movies-does anybody get lucky twice?
Wouldn't it be nice...
Tell me can you dig it Miss Fugazy
Now it's gone from late to later
Frankly I could use a little face time
In the service elevator
And if Dave from Acquisitions
Wants to get in on the action
With his Handicam in tow
Well we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
Can it be the sorry sun is rising
Guess it's time for us to book it(to book it)
Talk about the famous road not taken
In the end we never took it
And if somewhere on the way
We got a few good licks in
No one's ever gonna know
'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
This is one of those music videos that stick with you for life. The Nightfly was such a groovy album - it really captured the vibe of an almost forgotten, magical time in American music, before the Beatles, the Stones, et al. invaded our airwaves. Now don't mistake me, I'm glad the British Invasion came along, but there's something pure and honest about this music and the cultural memories it invokes.
Timeless
Bought this album when I was 16 growing up in Scotland. Blew me away immediately. The video was the icing on the cake. Have listened to the album all these years. Never would have thought it would sound so fresh 40 years on. The DDD (digital mix, master and media) was pioneering then. But the musicianship and engineering are what really stand out. Thank you Donald. The effort you put into this album was appreciated then, now and probably forever.

I stayed up many a night, into the wee hours, in the summer of 1983, hoping that MTV would play this video. It was and still is my all time favorite music video. Great music video, Great song and a great album. I wore out my Night Fly cassette tape years ago.
