Guitar-Larry Carlton
Harmonica-Tom Hemby
BGV's-Mark Ivey, Stephanie Hall, Melodie Crittendon
I'm amazed that anyone can sound this close to the studio version, even Fagen.
I was just about to comment the same thing until I scrolled to yours.I agree 💯% with you. This sounds like they're in a studio.
Yeah that was very impressive!
I'm going with ' it probably helps to have Larry Carlton in your band' .... 😵💫🤗. But, yeah.. these folks are truly PHENOMENAL!
I don’t think Larry Carlton is using his own guitar. It’s probably Tom Hemby’s guitar.
Listen to this a few times and you will hear something different each time. It’s that good.
I swear I just thinking that!!!
Whoever miked and mixed this performance deserves a gold star!
On-point comment toznerd. I can't believe they got the rythm section in such perfect balance. Nothin' but Pocket baby!!
Crisp, clean great tone across the spectrum - just enough reverb - masterful
@@lukeguitar1 almost too perfect. The background rhythm part - I think it's a sound from a keyboard (possibly a sequenced part) sounds EXACTLY like the original recording. I think it's a tracked part - meaning, they are playing along to a pre-recorded track and it's the track that is controlling the tempo. That would explain why it sounds so perfect.
I don't see anyone playing it, and I don't know if it's possible to play it "by hand" and have it be so perfectly tight. I mean, , I'm a keyboard player and I know theoretically it's possible to have played it perfectly, but it seems unlikely - and more to the point , I don't see anyone playing it. Plenty of bands play with tracked parts, so it's quite likely in my opinion that's what's going on here.
In addition, I believe we are listening to a mix off of the mixing board, as opposed to a microphone just capturing a purely live ambiance. The recording tech does a great job. For comparison, listen to this purely live (probably from an iPhone) recording of the real band with Fagan and Gadd playing AJA. It's very good. It's not perfect.
ruclips.net/video/XqLVQuzpAok/видео.html
So anyway, getting back to this video, I'm not taking anything away from the overall presentation. The lead singer is strong. The background harmonies are beautifully nuanced. (Again, it's possible the live harmonies are aided by pre-recorded tracks. It's not unheard of by any stretch.) And in any case, Carlton's playing is sublime; and he's definitely playing live. :)
@@skykeys I think you know whereof you speak. It's kind of too good to be totally live. However, there's a huge gulf between your typical cell phone recording of a live concert, and this, which the link you provided illustrates only too well. There's no way to get any where near this kind of audio quality unless you have a pre-arranged setup to record the live performance properly. Otherwise you get just waaay too much room ambience, improper instrumental balance, standing waves, etc. This performance recording was obviously thought out ahead of time. And post production/mixing would also be an important factor.
That was me. I'm also his guitar teacher. And, then, I WOKE UP!🤣
Wonderful ... that drummer is right on the mark. Mr Carlton is tastefully understated - what a legend.
sorry, that is the wrong snare for this song. and he's rushing.
@@BadExample65Post a link to film of you doing it correctly.
@@BadExample65wrong. He’s playing to a click track
@@BadExample65wrong!!!! You’re saying his timing is off? Absolutely incorrect!
Not a cover band . A MASTER band !!! OMG !
When I listened first time, I was seventeen years young boy .
Now I am 56 years old boy, but still be young boy in mind.
Master piece!
Anyone that loves Steely Dan and Donald Fagen is alright in my book!!!
Wonderful BAND It takes me away when i feel sad
Wonderful BAND they deserve a big star no contest
Perfect!!! Larry Carlton played on the original D.Fagen album, some 40 years ago, but he's still the one...
Holy shit that's the ACTUAL Larry Carlton!!
Awesome
The one and only Larry Carlton. Saw him at a jazz festival at a small venue in Austin Texas about 30 yrs ago. He was no less amazing then.
I grew up with one of Larry's cousins. I ran into him several times over the years. One thing about Larry he really hasn't changed over the years. Very cool guy and if he can he'll give you time if you ever met him. The way to Larry's heart is fishing... he loves fishing with his cousin Steve.
Lol and several other pro session players:)
Accept no substitutes !!!
Nothing better than hearing the OG Larry Carlton’s guitar licks on this great performance….
I’m the Biggest Steely Dan Fan I know!! That was ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE!
Wow!!! Insanely Good
se tu sei il più grande fan degli Steely Dan e perchè non conosci me,facciamo a gara?
Of course the players are unsurprisingly fine, but I wanted to give a shout for the guy doing that sweet vocal rendition. DF's voice is a unique one and not that easy to capture. This guy did a really outstanding job here.
Thank you sir.
@@TNKeys I agree. You gave it a Fagen feel but still kept it your own. Brilliant!
A huge "thank you" to everyone involved! This is one of my favorite songs, and such an excellent cover version. Larry Carlton is amazing, but that's something that I expect from him. What suprised me in a cover-version was just how good everyone else was, and especially Scott with his excellent keyboard, and how his singing complemented Donald Fagen's original voice. Y'all have put a HUGE smile on my face! 🙂
The guitar where everyone is watching is transfixing......goddam that drummer just keeps that groove on the high hi hat perfectly
At a Russ Taff concert once, John starts the hi-hat lead in to a song when suddenly Russ decides to put his guitar down and preach for a while. John keeps playing. After several minutes, I'm thinking any second now John's arms are gonna fall off. He just kept going. That was in the 80's.
keeping it in the pocket......
The Drummers great
Mr. John Hammond
Larry, Larry, Larry! The musician other musicians pay to see. Listen to Third World Man to further remind you of just what a remarkable professional this dude is. Clearly, one of the best covers of one of Donald's classics.
No comments on the bass man… he kept this thing flowing very smoothly! Nice cover.
Mr. Gary Lunn
He’s really good!
It's one thing to claim badass but another to prove it true.
Drummer is a machine!! Great groove:)
And there is sequenced percussion - The return of Wendel!
I was just thinking that! He's amazing!
Also now I focused on him he is so smooth but rock solid on that groove, so tight
I don’t think I could have done it, without throwing in a needless fill. If I played like that, I’d leave my toms at home.
@@PeterVred Same here. I guarantee idiotic fills and playing with the beat. There's a reason I'm not a drummer...
I am floored by the thought that the harmonica player is also an phenomenal guitar player. People that can play multiple instruments at that level are amazing to me.
JUST can't stop commenting on this video! The sound quality... the camera angles... the fine musicians.......brings a few tears to my eyes every time I hear it !
I sure miss seeing them in person at 3rd & Lindsley!!
It's a year later and I agree with you my friend. They are all terrific and the sound...must be a blast to see them live
Same
Listen to quarantine cover playing "the new Frontier", if you did,nt know it, you would swear its Steely dan, its scarily brilliant.
To cover Fagen you need all of that and more !
THIS WAS GREAT THE BASS PLAYER AND DRUMMER ARE RIGHT ON TIME LOVE IT!!!
Yeah man there "locked" in...
Exactly
@@fraz72 They've played together a lot. Check out Tim Akers and The Smoking Section clips.
Great all round performance. But the unsung hero is the drummer. Great. So straight and very tight. Right on the beat. 👍😎🇬🇧
Definitely - the entire band is spot on!!!
Stiff - no groove. Even Billy Jean had a groove.
@@johnrives8277 Some of Nashville's best. Check Tim Akers other project The Smoking Section.
The drummer had GREAT "feel"
@@mr.shitebucket566 Then you don't like Steely Dan.
Like everyone is saying, this is so faithful to the original it's uncanny! Amazing!
Great song to cover! Love the fade out with Larry Carlton and the harmonica player. Well done!...
This is one of Fagen's finest compositions. Imaginative. Bright. Brilliant.
The album was a genial move from DF after the SD disbanding
Love the way Larry is just hiding in the background ! What a LEGEND. Band did a nice job too!....... KUDOS
paulychannel Yeah. Such a sweet soul. Definitely did not want it to be about him.
Indeed A Hero mr Larry🎸🎸
A true legend. Love ya Mr Larry Carlton.
@@TNKeys You are so right, forgive my error! ..Should have been about DF!.... Nevertheless you guys kicked ass & probably sound better "live" than SD! RESPECT
@@paulychannel7914 No error my friend. I was just agreeing about Larry being in the background. He didn’t want the show to be about him, he just wanted to play along and be a part of it. He was very sweet, and went on to hire me to do some charts for his live show.
I've ended up listening to this even more than the original. Larry Carlton's exquisite solo towards the end.. pure unadulterated joy.
No other band has covered these Fagen tunes like these guys! Y'all nailed it!
Right. I've been listening to lots of covers of SD tracks recently, but this is the first cover I've heard of a Nightfly track. They do a great job and there's no greater accolade than having Larry Carlton play guitar.
Who is the band?
Nailed it!! Just like the man said...
THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST COVER EVER!!!!... ABSOLUTELY AWESOME 👍👍👍
👍 Yes
Agree!
The version is stunning but Larry's performance is out of this world
WOW! The legendary Larry Carlton. I knew this was going to be good. I've seen several SD tribute bands and have been lucky enough to have seen SD live before Becker died, once in Vegas w/ Larry Carlton. You all are better than the tribute bands I've seen. Well done.
Some of their stuff (dare I say) is better than SD live. Blasphemy, I know... but I'm a slave to objective truth.
Amazing dedication to the original❤what’s their name? With this (and the immortal Larry Carlton)they’ve earned my respect and admiration. And for a STEELY SNOB, like myself, for it to still be welcomed and enjoyed, I’m(almost)speechless! Lol
Fantastic cover from great musicians. Plus what a boon to have Larry Carlton guesting on the track. Absolutely amazing! 😎👍🏻
Had NO idea Tom Hemby also plays harmonica. It’s dead on for the LP recording. And having Mr. 335 himself, just tucked away back there as part of the rhythm section - this is too much!
Also, check out Tom's brother Ron in Eaglemaniacs.
Roderick,
I’ve seen Ron sing, play bass and do a mean Floyd The Barber impersonation!
Mr. 335?
Larry is giving this special feeling I cannot describe, but it's the Dan-feeling. ;)
Just lovely....
You're right...that guitar sound is the number one SD sound for me
the 70s fusion vibe
because larry is the dan-sound :)
That’s how Larry rolls. He’s the very best IMHO.
This is why you want to hear musicians playing live! The original video clip brought me here.
... and that incredible steady drum groove...!
50 years old. Fagen has been my favourite artist for 40 years and the New Frontier is number one for me. Listened to it every day for 40 years. Would love to get to a live show but living in Australia and the damn COVID-19 i don't see that happening any time soon.
Larry and Tom Hemby on harmonica at the end is just sublime. Thank you!
So I absently click on this Donald Fagen cover, kind of expecting to hear it mauled - Fagen’s hard to cover. Then I’m thinking, “Wow, smooth BGVs and guitar player has Larry Carlton’s sound nailed pretty good.” Then I’m thinking, “Ha, he even looks like Larry Carlton...” Then I read the credits. John Hammond and Gary Lunn are both such fine players, so much to love about this whole group. Very pleasant surprise.
Has his sound nailed?? It’s him. Lol
Amen to that!! Tight 70's say it's Skin Tight!
John Snavley vocals excellent too on this. Pleasantly surprised.
L.O.L. No wonder this is the best Dan/Don cover group I've heard... thank you for pointing that out
If you ever get to Nashville and we ever get this dang virus out of the way, you MUST go see them live. You will be hooked forever!
Played perfectly by all the band members. But Larry's playing gives the song the special touch it needed on the original album and her live... his playing definitely sticks out. One of my all time heroes.
I don't know how many times I listened to this, but I am blown away every single time!
Gen Xers playing the music of their childhood......to perfection.
Presque aussi beau que "FM" que j'avais découvert en écoutant radio FIP , en 1978 , à Paris !!
Quelle DÉCOUVERTE à l' époque
I love how everyone just stops to watch Larry in awe.
Mark Mullins I literally broke out in tears after the song was over.
I mean, who wouldn't! It must have been an amazing experience for all concerned. Definitely recreated the magic.
@@TNKeys there are just so many hits from these two that it was as if the guys and girls were looking at a radio or a record player and waiting for those last notes as their ears and memories rode the last perfect waves to the shore line on which the small fire surrounded by friends and family members watching another perfect sun set.
He's one of those guys, sure he sounds great on a record, but when you see him live, you REALLY get it. All the little nuances... one of the absolute best guitarists of his era for sure
@@TNKeys i feel you
Danm, been listening to this song, album for 40 plus years you guys nailed every song👍👍👍👍
How special Larry Carlton is spinning his magic on this classic Donald Fagen tune. Great job by all.
Actually it's from Fagen's classic solo album from 1982...
This is superb musicianship. Donald Fagan/Steely Dan will be played at my funeral so I can enjoy for eternity. And just think, some folks listen to "Pitbull", I'm not joking!!!
This is absolutely outstanding. Steely Dan are my all time favourite band, but I just love it when a group of very, very talented people get together and do a cover of their stuff. People like this bring something extra special to SD's amazing music.
this moved me to tears. that was unreal. this song makes you feel so free
Tear up every time I hear this. I grew up and have spent my life with LC’s music as my background music.
unreal is right. i almost turned it off when it started....i thought it was a dub over. bullseye.
Wow . . . Carlton has so much feel. I truly enjoyed this performance.
The Drummer the Drummer the Carlton the Carlton, this Band, this Band, and Steely Steely DAN !!!
Drummer is rock solid .. the sound crew is unbelievable good! I mean wowHoly smokes good! Love this! Thank you !
Who on earth would give this a thumbs down "Please show yourselves", and maybe a reason why? Are you Jealous, that you are not as good as anybody on this stage? This is A-Class act, soon to be gone in the next few yrs
Obviously jealous
If you ignore them they cease to exist
Don't ignore them. Pity them...
@@ianoleary7357 nice one mate
Who wants to listen to wonderfully crafted tunes performed by some of the best musicians of the time? Ya, I can't figure out SD haters, doesn't make musical sense...Loved the cover.
I love the part where he shreds a lead and then walks over to the girls and talks to them with a sweet subtle lead! Favorite part of this video!
Love seeing that respect for Mr. Carlton 💕
It’s been said that music can bring a tear to your eye, I never experienced that until I watched this.
I agree when Larry started his main solo at the end and everyone is just watching him I seriously got a tear
An that drummer is just rock solid
Killed it. 1980 I was a caddy. Caddy master played this album every morning. Loved every note
Wow guys... Best cover of this ever. Drummer and bass player really nailed it. The rest of you... Amazing.
Amazing!
Scott, you and your group are such a treasure for a budding Dan Fan like myself. The Nightfly is almost twice as good with your versions to switch to every once and a while!
Amazing rendition of this Donald Fagan classic.
This really made my day - Brilliant 👏
What a beauty. Larry it's the best in the last century. love, love and again love.
Goosebumps. You guys are incredible... and Carlton *of course* is sublime as usual. Please please please do more together !
Great band, great sound. And what a drummer! Fantastic!
This is pure aural gold - incredible!
My experience with this song makes me feel so good. My great grandmother converted a bunch of old 8mm videos onto a VHS tape in the 70s so it’s just a bunch of old short videos that cut from random things like my uncle painting out house to my aunts and uncles as kids swimming to my dads first birthday. I used to watch that tape all the time when I was a kid
I've seen Steely Dan live six times but have never seen Larry Carlton. When the pandemic ends and I can travel, I am going to see Larry Carlton live. It's on my bucket list! And maybe that all-star lineup will be playing too!
Larry Carlton is phantastic with his own band. I had the pleasure to hear him live about five times. Also had a chat with him and he's a really nice guy.
Watched Larry play 3 times .Boston Massachusetts after he survived a gunshot to his neck. Then years later in Georgie with Fourplay twice. Amazing clean super tight notes .
Probably the greatest song ever written by Donald Fagen.
youtube feeds this to me over and over. because it knows that SD/DF is the best ever and i'm addicted to it - being a musician and songwriter myself. but this takes us back to a place my Dad built, with a party and a shelter and lots of beer, a big blonde who looks like Tuesday Weld. how do you not go into a cool place in the shade of this pop/jazz masterpiece w/ Larry Carlton for crying out loud! everyone here did a wonderful job i will say again.
Sophisticated! Besides legendary Larry Carlton is here! Nightfly is one of my best albums ever! I gave up covering Donald Fagen tunes for a long time.
Thanks! I went to Steely Dan concert at Osaka Japan in 1994. The drummer was a legendary Peter Erskine. I rather love their Live in 1970's! Jeff Porcaro was super super cool!! Jeff Baxter as well! They were all young and super energetic!
@@bluesysamurainao4557 Love Jeff, but the original drum-part of "New Frontier" was played by Ed Green. One more wonderful Dan-drummer! :)
First heard Larry C when he played for The Crusaders.... The album.... Those Southern Knights. The track he stood out on was Spyral
@@darylcadman2863 I see. Anyway the drummer in The Chicken Live was Peter! The collaboration of Super Legend Jaco and Peter is miracle groove and tone! I wanna try to cover it in my youtube channel!
Frickin awesome..hats off to the recording engineer/mixer

In the presence of greatness.
Larry "Mr335" Carlton what cool guy. Band nailed it. 👍
Scott Sheriff sounds just like Donald Fagen! Wow!
Had a look at this again in 2021, & I would have to say, that they are all masters of their craft
Musical instruments singing in perfect harmony! Thats my idea of live music!
Besides this being an absolute great performance by outstanding muscians, what a great moment at the end giving a standing ovation for Larry. Pure class!
simply wonderful, thank you all...
With Larry Carlton there I hope this performance included lots of covers from the Royal Scam. He was a giant on that album.
superb, all around fantastic performance.
There are many guitarists who sound can be copied if you put the hours in, but Larry Carlton's effortless fluid control of dynamics is nigh on impossible to duplicate. I've never heard anyone do it like he does.
Larry Carlton is one of the finest session guitarists ever He played with George Benson. Crusaders. and so many other great bands.
I have personally never heard anyone copy Larry exactly he has his own magical touch tone and phrasing
What a treat indeed
Miss the days when we could go to shows like this !
Very impressive! I was sitting in my garage drinking my IPA while listening to my playlist RUclips provided me and realized that this does not sound like Donald Fagan. Very well done!
I just clicked on the video because I saw Donald Fagen and New frontier in the title, one of my favorite songs from Donald and had no idea it was a cover. Fooled me for a bit, awesome group and the Harmonies! Loved the bass, drums, guitar riffs...everything!
Spot on! Beautyful! ❤️
Great song, fabulously rendered!!🤗
WOW, BEAUTIFUL!!! Rarely that a cover band covers a song better than the original artist!
That drummer is great!
My, what an album that is.
What has impressed me is that, despite what must have been painstaking work to recreate the sound with such accuracy, they are all so joyful in doing so. Thank you.
The first solo line LC does incorporating the wah?
What???
As good and sweet as it gets!!!
Fantastic!
DAMN, if this isn’t SPOT ON. Just WOW. So good 😊
Damn that drummer is good!
Ahh. Larry Carlton. One of my first real inspirational guitarist. That sounded like a recording.
Larry is a gifted genius. Tone touch phrasing notes...

What guitarist in his right mind would have the balls to step on a wah pedal during this song? Tom seemed surprised to hear it but then smiles approvingly, like, “Damn, if he doesn’t make that wah sound perfect for this part!” Brilliant.
Life long SD fan and this performance is glorious. Too bad you don't take this show on the road!
Sounds amazing. Good job everyone involved, including that guy with the 335
