Only hard working musicians and steely fan’s can appreciate how hard it is to play another’s composition like they wrote it. The night fly is truly underrated.
It really is difficult to reproduce. And to see all that on stage talent shows the complexity of Donald Fagen's compositions. Well done all!
One of the best albums of any genre by any artist at any time period.
I miss Nashville.
it is a joke? One of the most critical acclaimed album and one of the best of the 80's
Is it really “underrated”?
But the rest, yeah, couldn’t agree more.
I doubt I will ever have the chops for this 53-chord masterpiece.
I clicked on this thinking it was Donald Fagen but stayed with it and it turned out to be excellent. Not the easiest of songs but Gene Miller certainly did it justice and the musicians/ singers were spot on. Very well done.
I've been a very very long time fan of Steely Dan and Donald Fagen on his own and you folks have done the best covers I've heard. Bravo to you all.
I echo your thoughts. Where have you been all of my life?!
Cool chord changes.
@@ClintScottFischer You may have to fight me for her. I’ve been looking for a fellow Dan fan for 40 years!
1974... Just landed in Hawaii, married my marine was stationed there, driving to our new home, heard Ricki don't loose that number .. been hooked since .. bought everything steely Dan and Donald ever did .. Walter Becker what a master as well...
Amazing version...Respect!
Great musicians ..the drummer John Hammond is just perfection. !
Yes! And he and bassist are Locked together!
Metronome Hammond
Love that hi hat
Imagine creating a modest first solo album and having it lovingly covered by the world's best 3+ decades later
I am a longtime Steely Dan and Fagen fan and I gotta say that this is ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS! This is the best cover I've heard of any song.
"Won't you pour me a Cuban Breeze, Gretchen?" -- awesome playing everyone. Kudos!
I always dug that line from this tune..🤣
@@bmentlow and 'a skinny man with two tone shoes'. What kind of genius poet do you have be to come up with a line like that? LOL
Great song with great lyrics!
I hope listeners know how good these musicians are. Akers, Carlton, Hemby... Love love this
Great band... captures ever nuance of the Nightfly, Fagen's voice and the whole arrangement... SO well done.
I love the line, a skinny man with two tone shoes. Great band, excellent performance, amazing mix and recording. Thank you.
It's what's called......perfection!
Well done. A pleasure to listen to.
Such a fabulous lead vocal and backups....oh and a fabulous band too! The best cover of Fagen's 'Goodbye Look' I've heard...listening again and again...wonderful!
This album has aged so well, and the timing is perfect for a group this good to revisit these gems. Thank you from the bottom our hearts!
Thanks for the kind words!
Wonderful rendition!! All the musicians are fantastic.
]
Damn!! This band is incredible.
This material is probably the most enjoyable music I've ever consumed, played a little. I sing somewhat in Fagen's range including the strained notes LOL! These folks are presenting the material as good as it gets! I'm sure Donald appreciate's it also!! Bravo !
EXCELLENT! Every part played to perfection!
I love Donald Fagen!! He brought so much character and charisma to what we love
Incredible musicians. And those singers, WOW! Gene Miller is phenomenal!
That's a marvellous cover. Thank you all.
BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN SONG,I CAN STILL HEAR LARRY CARLTON'S SOLO IN MY HEAD~!~!~!~
I'm not a big fan of covers but this one's excellent. My favourite Donald Fagen song. The lyrics are straight out of a Humphrey Bogart/Lauren Bacall movie.
That’s your best cover I’ve heard of night fly album....34 years later and you brought it fresh💪👌
Best cover I think i have ever heard - as good as the original. Great vocals. Well done one and all.
a lot of it is NOt live its a backing track.
Easily the most true cover of fagen ive heard. Spot on performances from every member in this band - just like donald would of had.
Holy amazing!
So perfect. Congratulations and thanks for posting.
The lead singer sounds just like Donald Fagen. I wish I could see them live; this is definitely their day job. I love it when the cover band takes their job so seriously.
Wow! Before I heard your group my wife Steely Dan cover band was probably the best that I had ever heard. But you guys are like at least number one in the category of Steely Dan or Donald Fagen cover band!
WOW, I was just listening with headphone and not watching the video and didn't realize it was a cover until 2 minutes in. Well done boys, you've done it!
Consummate musicianship cannot be overstated.
Absolute perfection, I’ve heard a lot of good Steely Dan cover bands , but you’re the best by far. Great job!
Bravo, that was so well done. As a huge fan of Donald and Walter's, I would love to hear you do more of this album, Or Kamakiriad.
You do know we did the whole album, right? Look under playlists. 😁
Fantastic job! I'm sure Donald would be pleased with the performance and execution of his tune..
I'm thankful to God for this band and the great songs from Mr. Fagan, Mr. Becker and all those who made it happen. Hope to see you all in Heaven some day.
Larry G. Walter Becker had nothing to do with The Nightfly
@@wallyb55232 True, but he had a lot to do with Donald. Together they found that style Donald continued with the Nightfly.
As a life long Steely Dan fan that was a fantastic rendition and the singer has quite a unique voice; you nailed it !
Superb rendition of a superb track. Ty so much!
This is fucking brilliant! An exceedingly warm and heartfelt performance that really packs a punch. Bravo!
Drummer an excellent timekeeper! He's a machine!
Jazzy funky with a twist of lemon,
Just superb!
digging it y'all...you do Donald proud!!!
I’ve listened to this show over and over. I hope you always perform it from time to time. You all have brought every inch of it to life and also added your passion in large portion. Bravo TN Keys!!
Amazing. As far as the music, they got it down to studio quality and on a live stage. Pinpoint accuracy. Simply fantastic. And the lead singer is so close I can close my eyes and believe I am hearing Donald Fagen singing. I have never heard of any band get any band so close in my life.
This singer is far more melodic than DF.
A truly exceptional performance!
This is like a music machine…….made by brilliant craftsmen 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
first class
Beautifully played and mixed!
Kudos to guitarist Tom Hemby for the mixing!
Great tribute to some great Musicians.
Absolute perfection! I cannot stop watching these master musicians performing this incredible piece of music by DF
Fantastic cover , amazing musicians and singers , it's difficult and almost unfair to single anyone out for special praise but i especially liked the drummer , great foundations.
Extremely well done - kudos to all!
I only just stumbled upon this amazing show footage and am utterly floored at how beautifully performed these songs are. My girlfriend is a background vocalist in a Steely Dan tribute band and I’ve sat in a few times to sing lead so I know just how difficult it is to faithfully recreated these tunes. You’ve done an incredible job… better than any other I’ve ever heard. Congrats and thank you so much for sharing this!
Floored by the group, came back and subscribed for the drummer & rhythm section! Sizzle
GREAT SONG FOREVER N EVER AWESOME MUSIC ATMOSPHERE
Just brilliant. Sublime playing and singing by all the musicians on that stage and kudos to their sound guy for a perfectly balanced sound!
That Bass is in the pocket!
I am sure Donald Fagen would dig it. 🥰 Also love the Samba-feel recreated by John Hammond. Jeff Porcaro is demonstrating this groove so wonderful in his instructional video.
this is fabulous. Band nails it and the singer has that perfectly smooth, slightly graveled voice that fits so well. He even hits intonations that accent the lyrics in his own, elegant and poignant way
I was in a different mindset when the Dan and Donald were making albums, now I’m making up for lost time. Listen to it every day for a few years now. THIS is a treasure trove. I feel so blessed to be able to watch this.
I’M SPEECHLESS! Fagen/Becker tight!
RIP Mr.Akers
I love this song. Once again, they nailed it! Donald Fagen and Walter Becker would be so proud to hear someone is playing Donald's song.
This is very, very GOOD!!! Awesome!!! :-)
2:35 Tom Hemby doing SD trademark understated perfection.
What a stud
Spectacular. Just spectacular. I want to go to a huge concert with you all and Leonid & Friends. Nailing songs like this? Incredible.
This the best cover
Wow...all of you excellenté, Drummer incredible. Incredible feel, perfect time. Perfect ape!!! Perfect. Thank you. I learned some BD parts by watching you, where just listening to Jeff was not enough for me to figure it out. Thanks again.
What a band
Amazing cover. Fagen must be proud of you guys.
I am a big fan of the Lexington Lab Band. Their covers are tremendous. But this is the best cover I have heard of any Donald Fagen song.
That guitar solo, *chef's kiss*
Love it! You may not know it, but sound reinforcement engineers use this album "The Nightfly" by Donald F.,and other albums, to properly adjust sound systems for maximum performance.
I have to stop watching, I have a gig tomorrow night and now I feel I must hit the woodshed immediately! Super incredible job on my favorite album of all time!
I never thought it's possible to cover SD's music but you guys are just amazing and proofed me wrong. I just can't stop listening!
One of my favorite songs on the album. Blown away by how good this is. Special shout out to the lead guitarist. Great playing!
Brilliance. Thank you for another awesome cover.
Some music composers were so good to teach us, how to be respectful towards a certain elegance performing, watching such bands so respectful of a certain way of making music is suuuuper gorgeous indeed, you are doing a great job guys, never stop believe in, Easter celebrations are near, let them sound just this good, everybody get out and paaaarty we are lucky survivors
their sound person does a wonderful job... perfection.. thanks
This is crazy good!!
I keep coming back to this cover of such a great tune done exceptionally well!
I just watched this for about the fifth time. Love it.
1st off... what a great song and album. How did this not win the Grammy? 2nd... Tom Hemby's tone and playing! 3rd... How many excellent musicians are named John Hammond?? They're ubiquitous! 4th... You guys nail it every time. Sublime!!
It didn't win a Grammy that year because it was up against an album called Thriller.
@@jaysonbiggs8979 Actually I think Toto won that year, but regardless, it's a crime imo!
@@matthewmuller5794 You're right. Toto won. Thriller won in '84.
Awesome cover. beautiful live sound.
Very good !!!!
Send the desire to always listen to the songs again !!
Complete copy!Awesome! I think so hard to play Fagen’s album as it is.
I never realized how good Steely Dan was until I had to learn some of their tunes for my band.
The whole thing is just lush and gorgeous, but holy crap the guitarist. WOW
Great cover, and the lead singer knocks it out of the park.
Holy smokes, this is GREAT!! If you guys are ever in the west coast, LA area, please let us know!!
The Cuban Revolution. The perpetual thorn in the side of American imperialism. The drummer is killin'!
I just wish I could like this ten thousand times! Truly inspiring performance!
Incredible!! But please, put the camera on the person soloing !
The surf was easy on the day I came to stay
On this quiet island in the bay
I remember a line of women all in white
The laughter and the steel bands at night
Now the Americans are gone except for two
The embassy's been hard to reach
There's been talk and lately
A bit of action after dark
Behind the big casino on the beach
The rules are changed
It's not the same
It's all new players
In a whole new ball game
Last night I dreamed of an old lover
Dressed in gray
I've had this fever now since yesterday
Wake up darling they're knocking
The Colonel's standing in the sun
With his stupid face the glasses and the gun
I know what happens
I read the book
I believe I just got
The goodbye look
Won't you pour me
A Cuban breeze Gretchen
I know a fellow with a motor launch for hire
A skinny man with two-tone shoes
Cause tonight they're arranging
A small reception just for me
Behind the big casino by the sea
I know what happens
I read the book
I believe I just got
The goodbye look
The resemblance to Fagen‘s trademark vocal techniques is astonishing!❤
I regard “The Nightfly” as a Steely Dan album, as much a part of their classic run from “Can’t Buy A Thrill” to “Gaucho” as any one one of those.
Well deserved recognition of Mason Embry on the Synth Marimba but that guitar solo was just stellar. I am going to guess that the guitar soloist was Tom Hemby. The work of bass, Gary Lunn, and drums, John Hammond, made this sway. Tim Akers and all never disappoint.
Yes Mason did a great job. And that was Tom on guitar. Mark was playing acoustic on that one.
The lead vocalist has his own style and sound but to make this music work it has to be Donald’s tone and simply…….it’s all perfect 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
What an album to cover! I had my doubts when I clicked play but this was a phenomenal body of songs by DF. Great job everybody.
Clean, Crisp & Cool...superbly done!
If it is difficult to do a cover it is harder to do a cover of a well known artist. They nailed it!
Tom Hemby on guitar- very lovely and musical guitar solo.
