This isn't a cover band - this is BEYOND whatever expectations you could have if you are a Donald Fagen fan - SO well done!
you're absolute correct, no different than the original, great music
@@leefowler3240 those killer close harmonies on the chorus - soooo close to the Donald original multitracking...
But that guitarist in the back, what is he doing. He already lost his part and Im not sure if he is playing in this song. Busy doing whatever on his Ipad. What a.....
they're tight.
True dig deep at 12th Larry Carlton steps in on one
GREAT. The bassist nailed every nuance of the original Will Lee part. Killer band, and as accurate as possible, never heard anything as close to the original as this.
On Fagens version, I thought Will Lee was playing an electric upright b/c its so smooth.
That s right nether do I.... first time I heard this video in my car..concentrated with driving. ... though it was the album and not live ! Amazing ! 🤗
Even Carton's comping parts was spot on
The drums and bass aren't talked about enough...they are so tight and musical
yes especially bass i learn it actually and its not so easy to play but its so nice
There is a drum machine playing shaker / hi hat triplets part
@@Alex-je1ll I hadn’t noticed that, but a drum machine in the mix potentially adds to the challenge of playing live. There is a pause to the shaker during the first turnaround, so the shaker is programmed from the count in? Pretty challenging if you’re the drummer trying to make sure you’re with the shaker at all times.
Well. Those two dudes are world class in every way, and they play together a LOT!
Wonderful band. Can’t tell the difference from the original. All great musicians and singers. Special mention for the drummer. So tight and contained. Awesome 😎 🇬🇧👌
Maybe the tempo is a little faster.
The bass player is pretty special, too. Great walking bass tone!
haduroboros we captured the tempos electronically and the goal was to reproduce them. The drummer was on a metronome the whole show so unless the record tempo varies at some point, all tempos should be exactly as the record or extremely close.
@@TNKeys You are amazing, you captured all of it, I only wish I could have been there...there is nothing like live music and the sound here is so good, the musicianship was so perfect, your enthusiasm and sincerity shined through. A truly incredible album and you paid it incredible justice.
Did I say I wish I could have been there?
There is a drum machine playing shaker / hi hat triples part, which makes drummer's job easier. Or harder... :)))
I've watched every song from this set and I'm blown away by how close you guys got the sound to the album. any pro knows how hard this stuff is to cover, you guys did an amazing job, high attention to detail from everyone. I'm a bassist so shout outs to the rhythm section especially.
Amen to that!
There are overdubs. The guitar isn’t playing the first half of the tune, but you can hear guitar. Watch it again.
Mixer deserves a Grammy.
Wow, that’s like the perfect dessert after a meal. Perfect lead vocal for that tune - not trying to be Fagen, beautifully done.
Wonderful interpretation of one of the best albums ever made. I lift my hat guys. I am sure Donald smiles.
You are so privileged to have musicians in the USA as talented as this. We’re stuck with Olly Mars, Stormzy and Little Mix over here in England.
OMG perfect! You guys nail every tune from The Nightfly!
Mark Rigsby The band doesn’t have a particular name. Some of us play in a Steely Dan tribute called Twelve Against Nature and have our own RUclips Channel, and others are from Tim Akers and the Smoking Section.
@@TNKeys Makes me want to drive to Nashville to see your next set!... 6' and mask(LOL)... This concert was most excellent... you never could see the Dan play live really and the Nightfly is such a smooth album...DF desert island mandatory disc. Thanks for posting this gig!
I discovered The Nightfly during my senior year in high school when it first came out. No one else seems to have the chops to even try recreating the mental theater of the Nightfly. I concur with previous observations about the technical fidelity and masterful performances. But will also add that the band shows a rare attitude, which is to get out of their own way and let the music speak directly to the audience, letting the record's various moods all come through.
Excuse me from Japan far away.
This song is very short, but I think it's the best of Donald Fagen's numbers.
And I think it's Larry Carlton's best session.
Thank you for your wonderful performance!
Amazing that Steely Dan's music is still so loved today decades after being created. All that hard effort that Fagen and Becker put into their music,is why it is so loved up until today. Being perfectionist in all aspects of their music paid off for sure. And this band above is making a sacrifice to keep that love going. You can tell that it is a labor of love because they are just as much the perfectionist as Steely Dan was.
I played this for years on guitar, if only I had been there, I know this tune backwards, no need for charts!
I did Goodbye Look as a soloist back in the day thanks man!
There were a few other songs played there that night. 🤣 A bit rough to memorize them all on just 2 rehearsals.
This drummer is beyond tight. Holy crap.
Never appreciated the complexity of Fagen's music and arrangements until I viewed the # of keyboards and vocalists on that stage. Nicely done all. And of the most musically challenging arrangements.
I absolutely love this song sooo
Much
Bass is perfection
WOW!!! I've seen Steely Dan live. This is astonishing.
unbelievably perfect .... thank you
Simply amazing!
Absolutely great band, makes me miss live gigs
Outstanding!
Best cover of this ever!!!
Totally agree with that!
A cover of a cover…
Absolutely outstanding. I've got a good ear and have to confess I Iisten out for all the little nuances which appear on the record and this band, to produce music of this quality and complexity, LIVE, have nailed everything down to the last detail. Faultless. Donald himself could only be impressed.
So wonderful!!!!
Hard to believe "The Nightfly" album wasn't written and recorded in the late '50s.
That was the idea behind it.
@@erlycuyler It's an hommage to the late '50's, early 60's. The politics, music and culture. In November '63 and February '64 everything changed forever. I was a kid but I remember it all very well. I knew that something was changing very quickly. You could feel it.
It was recorded in 1982.
You noticed that too huh? Just what I thought when I bought CD when it was released. Just think. Making a song out of JFK's New Frontier and the cold war and it actually being a good song. The Genius of Fagen.
I got chills! WOW!
Love it..
Fabulous! Bravo!
Thank you so very much you guys are a credit to Donald can't get enough of you please come to MELBOURNE ❤
Killin' it! Bravo!
Totally nailed it! band, backup vocals and all!
These guys are AMAZING!!
You’re amazing ! thnx for posting 💛.
Great cover! 👏🏼
This is a band that I would pay to play with - and those killer harmonies on the chorus - sooooo close to the Donald original.....SUPERB
By golly, they’re all great!
Beautiful!!! Great cover
Brilliant!
Maravilloso, realmente emocionante. Me encanta esa canción.
Awesome cover that I'll be listening a lot!
WONDERFUL
great song great job. thanks.
Outstanding. One of my fav tunes by Donald. Your vocals & instrumentation were spot on as was the arrangement and mix. Very well mixed and recorded. What a treat!,
Fantastic
Woah! This was pure Fire!
Another great performance!
Wow! Well impressed! Fab cover! ❤
Awesome! Glad I found this!
Terrific.
you guys absolutely nailed it, i got goose bumps and chills from it, go figure.
Big fan of your work too, bro.
This is class. Those cats at the back are solid AF!
Agreed John. The whole album is such a timeless classic!
Excelent, excelent, magnificent.
Thx guys. Amazing
Short but oh so sweet.
What I miss most about living in Nashville - nights like this at 3rd & Lindsley!
So good
Back to 1982 again! Thanks! :)
Great!
NAILED IT!! Fagen would be proud. One small question?? I hear the guitar jazz licks done so well but seeing the guitarist messing with his gear the entire song makes me wonder where the guitar is coming from. Maybe you have 2 guitarist and I don't see the other guy?? I know on small stages the camera doesn't always pick up everyone on stage. Oh never mind, I see the credits show only one guitarist. In any case, Keep up the great work!
awesome...
Excellent bravo
Awesome job on the lead scott!
Thanks!
Uh, wow. You people were ridiculously tight! You very well know how hard it it to play Fagan's music. You really nailed it. You did him proud!
Verycool‼️
Pretty damn good! Oh Miami!
Just fantastic folks....just wow...a tough friggin tune man...to get that shuffle feel....whew!!!
What a wonderful Drummer & Basist!
Gary Lunn on Bass, John Hammond on drums. Nashville pros
Oh my ... I was studying at UM Frost School of Music in the '80s, and The Nightfly was released. This became our anthem. Ooohhh MIAMI! 😀😀😀
great song and great rendition - I agree very accurate to studio version. Fagen is a genius
As a bassist I love how Fagan only used the right hand on keyboard and left the lower end up to the bass guitar. Sometimes the keyboardist doesn't realize how muddy it sounds with both trying to fill the bottom end in. The drums and bass make up the bottom of the musical triangle with all the others on top. The bass serves a double duty as a percussion and musical instrument.
On Nightfly Fagen used a bass synthesiser in synch with the bass guitar, and thus got the solid of solids walking bass. SUPERB
Damn, are you guys good. This is scary. Best Cover results ever ...
The BEST coverage of Donald Fagen’s celebrated Solo Debut masterpiece !
i love the precussion
Very good !!!!
Excellent interpretations !!!!
Bass rhythm and drums !!!
All instruments synchronized !!!!
WOW! So awesome! Nothing else to say. Everybody else in the other comments has already said it.
This band is very talented!!
Awesome! Brilliant performance. Great FOH! My only nit picker would be too much decay on the snare (for a Fagen toon) : p I'm kidding, Fantastic snare sound! Well done folks! Supreme!
Great job. everybody so much in tune and harmony. .... drummer and the bass line ...from what I know (few) are so accurate and regular ! Would like to know how to accompany at the guitar like this. !!!
Solid cover like recording. Thank you for sound engineer too
Tasty guitar.
Cool tune !!!!
Awesome. So glad to hear Gary nail the proper bass line around 1:50. Good homework fellas!
I am stunned at how good this sounds! Bravo! Especially drums and lead vocals. The rest of the Fagen covers are equally amazing so do yourself a favor and listen. I want to know about anything this band is doing, together or separately. Subscribed.
Oh wow. I have tics to see Steely Dan July 13 at the new amphitheater. Rip Walter. this just pumped me up. these guys are primo
Don’t wait that long. Pop on over to 3rd and Lindsley and catch tonight’s SD tribute.
How do I find out when you're playing again at 3rd and Lindsley"?
August 12 is our next one. Give us your email address over at twelveagainstnature.com and you’ll receive all gig announcements. Thanks!
great
That drummer and bassist!!!
I'm impressed, and that's hard to do👍
ENCORE!!!!!!!!
Great rendition of this Donald Fagen song. I'd like to watch your whole show on You Tube. Isn't the lead singer/keyboardist in Carrie Underwood's band?
Shannon K. Yep.

That's Nice! I'll have to listen to Donald Fagan's original then come back to this. Always thought jazz was the best platform for improvisation, and while this version is "clean as can be" I'd love to hear a little 'improve' sprinkled in. That's my favorite Fagan/Steely Dan album, too.
Like having Manhattan Transfer as your backup singers. So tight .
Wow nice, even Carltons parts was spot on
you guys are great! When and where are you playing again, hopefully Nashville or Chattanooga?
Hard song to play NICE
Good!
I tried karaoke and never realized how hard it is to sing songs. I have a lot of respect for musical artists now. Try it, you’d be amazed at how much work it is.
