I work with several retired air force and navy pilots. Your squadron chooses your callsign. They are universally derogatory, dumb and/or silly. If somebody claims to have a cool callsign, they are either lying, or there is a really stupid story behind why they are called that.

In the novellas written as backer rewards for this game, our lead character explains callsigns to the princeling he's training in much that same way. His own callsign is "Rail," abbreviated from Azrael, the angel of death. His companion is momentarily impressed until Rail explains he earned it in his first billet. It was so infested with giant roaches that he finally flipped his shit and went on a mad killing spree of every roach in sight until he and his bunk were covered in bug guts.

Agreed. My favorite fictional ones are from Snekguy's Pinwheel stories, a pair of pilots named Bullseye and Scorch. Bullseye got his name for firing a super-expensive missile into deep space during training. Scorch got his by once forgetting to retract his heat-sink fins during atmospheric re-entry and melting them off the fighter.

Battletech with your dad is a magical thing. I was introduced to the universe through Mechwarrior 2, and actually had to jockey for computer time against my dad for my turn to play. It was like two sibling fighting over the Super Nintendo. When he played, he always annoyed me because he would only use the chain fire option, so basically just slamming the space bar instead of lining up a good alpha strike with semicolon. Until he did the Trial of Equals in Ghost Bear's Legacy. He alpha striked the commander and scored a critical hit, popping the core while the .wav file for the commander was still executing. We still talk about that kill to this day.

The best callsign I've seen on a character so far has been "Rat Party." The story behind that callsign has to be more interesting than names like "Flash" or "Shooter." Was the pilot named because he held a tea party for rats to include dressing them in little costumes, or was he partially eaten by rats while stuck in a crippled mech? Perhaps it's due to some weird gathering in a red-light district in the St. Ives Compact? The world may never know.

You know, I've tried to watch a few other Battletech/Roguetech playthroughs, and as much as I love stompy mechs, I usually find myself bored and disinterested after a few episodes. For some reason, Tex... yours is/are the only one I've come across that works, that for some weird reason I keep sitting here going "oh for God's sake, it's been two days, drop the next episode already would ya?"
I'm not going to tell you the cliche "keep doing what you're doing" because I have no idea what is even happening here, but yeah...
Also, per the callsign thing; my Scrombles Slaughter Div. headcannon thinks that as part of the usual hazing/right of passage thing a lot of units have, you're not considered an "official" SSD member until you've been shot in the head at least once.

My dad is sort of responsible for getting me into Battletech. He was an early adopter for Computer stuff and to this day likes to keep an uptodate pc rig. Mechwarrior 2 was one of those classic showcase games for those 3d graphics, so when he found it in the discount box at a giant tiger, he picked it up. I was really bad at it, but I had fun making dumb modifications on mechs, sticking machine guns in the legs because why not? It was good times. Also my younger sister was a baby at the time, and the game soundtrack/effects was one of the few things that could consistently get her to sleep (the computer was near her crib) so if she was being fussy dad would just boot up a quick skirmish as Clan Wolf.
If it had been Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries that was on sale I might not be a filthy clanner, but because it was on sale I learned the value of a good deal and became a Diamond Shark.
It was fun when I was back home for quarentine reasons and had gotten into more artsy stuff, and I had decided I was going to give tabletop battletech a go. While painting up some of minis, he was like "oh nice a timber wolf!" and retorted with how the inner sphere calls them Mad Cats.

On the objectives vs targets thing, when I taught my roommate 40k I told him the tale of "shoot me" the Carnifex. Back in the 2nd / 3rd edition transition when I started, the friend who got me into it played Tyranids. Yellow book unbalanced 2ed Tyranids. He had a Carnifex he called "Pincushion" that served as a glory magnet. This carnifex [screamer'killer by today's standards, back then the only thing carnifexes could do was hug tanks and with an upgrade, vomit plasma. He didn't take the bio-plasma upgrade. He took all the armor and regeneration upgrades. In modern terms, this thing had a 2+ Armor, 3+ Invulnerable and 4+ Feel no pain, reduced damage by 1 per hit, had permanent +1 cover and could regen 1 wound a turn. You COULD NOT kill this thing. Yes it was 500 points, but it drew every big gun from the opponent's side because it is big and scary. His million Genestealers would then proceed to tear everything to shreds while his Tyrant and small warrior group... fulfilled the command requirements.
My roommate's first game against.. not me.. was the doubles portion of LVO 2020. His 1,000 pts of Nids and Genestealer Cults and my ik of Eldar Corsair soup. I told him the tale of Pincoushion the Carnifex to teach him the most important lesson in TT wargames: Identify each threat and how to deal with it. In the case of Glory Magnets like Pincoushion, you deal with it by ignoring it. Don't engage it, if it takes an objective... fine, there are 2 more. We each had specialties to complement each other, my Scourges with haywire blasters, Falcon and Razorwing had the firepower to take out big targets like Titans and Land Raiders, his Dakkafex, genestealers and Leman Russ Vanquisher could handle infantry, and my Night Spinner dropping death webs from inside buildings was our Glory Magnet [it pissed off Space Marines so much]. The l1 warrior squad I had and my Pirate Princes [count as Prince Yrial and the Vysarch] along with his warriors and cult leaders sat in objectives after the stealers and Patriarch cleared them.
Those plans don't work when the entire army is Glory magnets. First opponent Custodes with 7 models. 1,000 points. 7 Models. Each as hard to kill as Pincushion. Damn Jetbike shieldcaptain Melee'd my Razorwing [for Battletech fans who know nothing of 40k, imagine an Elemental, in full power armor, riding a light VTOL whose front end is 6 heavy machineguns, flying up to a medium aerospace fighter that has Arrow IV and twin Large Pulse Lasers... and chucking a vibro spear into its engine intake. That's how our first game went.
Our 2nd game was against basically a Battletech army. 2 Imperial Knights [basically heavy mechs] 4 centurions and Guilliman [a Star of Protomechs] and around 30 Marines [just over a star of Elementals]. Our forces amounted to a Medium Aerospace Fighter, 2 Medium Hovertanks, a heavy tank [the russ] 5 protomechs [the Tyranid Warriors, Prime and Patriarch] 2 Light Mechs [Carnifex and my Wasp walker], 1 jump infantry [my scourges], 1 mechanized infantry [warriors in a venom] and 2 normal infantry [the stealers and heroes]. Not much a Javelin and Firestarter can do against 2 Dragons. We did put up a good fight, those bugs love eating marines that stray too close, and my scourges managed to cripple one knight before being taken down in 1 round of shooting from it.

Talking about never having a bad Battletech game, win or lose, reminded me of one of (if not the) my first ever games, way back in BT 3rd ed. Playing the intro scenario with a friend who'd just bought the box set (the one that came with actual plastic minis!). Framed as a 2 mech training exercise, we each had a 55 ton and a 20 ton mech (I think i had a Griffon and Wasp vs. my friend's Wolverine and Stinger). First side to lose a mech ends the exercise.
So we end up pairing off, meds vs meds, lights vs lights, as we were new and didn't really know how to out maneuver yet. My buddy makes a tactical mistake, and his Wolverine ends up in the bottom of a pond, with my Griffon over watching. The rules at the time required you to be under the water to attack other things under the water, no shooting across the surface interface. So I can't go in to get him, and he's damaged and not willing to come out, as whoever moves had to sprint to get fully in or out (curse you crappy 4/4 pilots and rough terrain!) and would eat a full round of basically unanswered damage. At this point both our mechs were shot up enough that we'd be basically done.
On the 20 ton front, I'm roflstomping the Stinger. Some lucky rolls see my Wasp take off both legs and crit the medium laser, though i do take some hits to the dome (10pts of damage, ouch, but sure, I've still got 2 pts internal left). So I march right up to that prone Stinger, and prepare to end this. I've stripped his armor off, and punched his structure so bad that basically any hit and this is over.
He still has 2 functional arms and an MG though, so as per the rules, his mech can lift itself up on one arm, and fire weapons on the other.
Ok, cool, have your last gasp, from hell's heart defiance, I'm going to end you with my next shot. So he raises up and fires. It's a hit! No big deal, it's just an MG, I can tank that easy. Then he rolls double 6s on the location chart. That's a head hit. For 2 points of damage.
And that's the game. I went from guaranteed no problem definite win on my next roll to "well shit?" just like that.
And I was hooked. Played BT for well over a decade, still have my entire combined arms regiment of minis in a box downstairs. Such a great game!

    The Love Mech
Doug Jones looked down from the catwalk of the old fire station stunned. "Hey, Kentucky!," he called, "where did this thing come from?"
Ken "Kentucky" Wispowitz lifted the faceplate on the old neurohelmet he'd converted into a welder's visor and looked around his latest "masterpiece" of fused scrap and asked, "What thing where?" Doug just pointed down into the mech bay that originally housed the station's hook-and-ladder mech. "Where did that little white Urbanmech come from?" Kentucky bustled his hefty short frame around his "sculpture" over to the door into the station's garage. "I ain't never seen it before," he said. "Have you?"
Doug, maybe, possibly HAD seen it before. He'd been limping past the dealership (again) wishing he had the cash to purchase another mech. He'd been one of the Solaris greats, once upon a time. Then he'd crashed and burned a sponsor's very pricey omnimech after taking a "lucky" (he was still convinced it had been some sort of illegal targeting mod) hit to his cockpit. After that he'd had trouble even finding matches in the "rock-'em sock-'em" melee only arenas. He'd finally conned Discount Dan into sponsoring a tricked-out, custom Warhammer, only to be lanced through the knee by a precision gauss shot practically two steps into the arena. The feedback from the "prototype" neurohelmet still caused his knee phantom pain from the incident.
He'd charmed the young, very attractive, sales lady into not having him immediately tossed out and even letting him look over the cockpit of the Marauder in the huge showroom. It had obviously seen better days, but a glistening fresh dealership paint job had covered the patches up quite well. Then as she casually brushed off his attempts at flirting, they'd come across the lot owner ranting about a white urbanmech to one of his much abused assistants. Doug had stuck up for the thing. He'd seen a few overconfident Solaris Jocks underestimate the class 10 autocanon and the Urbanmech's maneuverability in tight spaces only to find a very large hole in their backs. The owner hadn't taken it well and had Doug escorted off the premises by a guard who'd obviously had a bit of Clan elemental DNA in his family tree while he'd continued to berate his dogsbody for not having the thing salvaged yet.
And now, here was the little white mech in his garage. "Well," he commented to Kentucky, "It's not like it walked here all by itself."
Kentuck got that dopey, one-sided smile of his, "he looks pretty plucky, he does. I think I'll just call 'im 'Urbie'."

I made it through this extremely hard mission on first attempt but was so tempted to save scum it anyway.
Unlike you I had no idea there was a drop coming and instead of taking out the defensive lance as I should have.
I took out the two power generators and immediately went to work on the fuel pumps.
So I of course ended up facing both lances at once same as you.
I may have made it but one of my Shadowhawks and a Dragon didn't.
Also Decker now hangs on my Memorial Wall after 736 days of service, he will be missed.
Behemoth was injured for a long, long time.
My two surviving mechs another Shadowhawk and Thunderbolt were both out of ammo and it was Kung Foo fighting at the end.
I have to say as a first play through that was some of the most fun and challenge I've had in the game so far, that is after I cooled down enough to realize it.
Not saying this to say look, "Oh I'm better than Tex", because I'm not by a long shot and the only reason I'm playing this game is because of him and the BPL.
Their JAW DROPPING, STUNNING AND AMAZING presentations on this outstanding universe is why I'm having so much fun.
So in closing thank you so much Tex and the madlads/ladies at the BPL, their Patrons and supporters, please never change...
(PS. I also bought Far Cry 5 just because of Tex and the Deputy play-through, have yet to play it but it is on my to do list)...

6:32 I'm kind of disappointed they don't have a "roll downhill" mechanic when you fall on top of a mountain like that. At least when it happens to an enemy mech. Also, the Amiga era 2D strategy game that got me into Battletech in the first place had things like forest fires started by stray energy or missile shots and crits to gyro or engine (the latter of which had an increasing chance to do what you call a "stackpole").

Didn't have any issue with it getting blown up, just knew it would drag us into some larger conflict. Was just a dumb move strategically.

I think at the end of the 1st play thru of the campaign I had somehting like 60+ complete mech's in storage and like 10-12M Cbills operating and had I think 9 pilots and 10 active mechs. (4 HGN's. 2KC, 1 Stalker, 1 Shadow, 1 Archer and something else). :P

What to do with a Traitor? My fave is 30 minutes, W.O.O (Without Oxygen). Of course, the tried and true 'Exterior Ship Inspection, sans suit', which is always a classic.
And to honor a deal... You promised them they could take a Life Pod... But, you never said it would function right, nor that it would be aimed at a Planet... In fact, to prevent Space Littering... aim it at the Sun!
And if your ship has an Anti-Matter drive? Well, show 'em the Core... up close and 'personal'.
And, of course, there is always the lovely Marooned on an air-less moon, with a suit full of Fire Ants.
Yes, I am both insane, and 'evil'... at times. I -TRY- to be a 'nice' guy... but some Asshats just deserve your most innovative thought processes... applied to them.

For the convoy missions, I usually roll two mediums and two heavies with decent long range weapons. The mediums just sprint and jump from cover to cover, getting piles of evasion, until they can start stomping the convoy vehicles from behind. Melee against a vehicle's rear is pretty much always a kill.
      Heavies shoot escorts.
