Can't agree on the hate for dark wood... It's a completely personal taste issue. Some will see that as "dreary", as you put it, and depressing, but many people (Including myself) view that as cozy and warm, somewhere I want to curl up with a book. I've been looking at luxury catamarans (Can't really afford any, just planning for "some day") and I really hate how everything after 2007 or so is bright, light wood, or painted. It all looks like Ikea to me.
Thanks, Chris, for the education on the clear advantages of a dual helm over a single. I was unknowingly stuck in thinking it was an expensive gimmick for the most part.
What amazes me is when people put their boats on the market and only provide pictures of the vessel that are full of their junk... It's repulsive and makes me want to run....
Hey Chris ... about those boats in "New York" with the US/CDN prices. Those Lake Champlain boats were often boouight in Canada , sailed on Lake Champlain and stored every winter in Canada. Will be Canadian registered usually. Usually no purchase tax paid and possibly no import tax either. My boat was there and the sellers had never paid tax. The initial sales tax may need to be paid as well as the tax on this purchase. Some will say tax paid, or tax NOT paid depending, needs to be taken into account. We were able to escape the old tax, no duty as our boat was from NC!! Needs to be clarified on these boats
The catalina layout with the little table and 2 seats opposite the main lounge opens up a loft style living option for a couple or single handing. Use the lounge as the master bed (which is in the most comfortable location and by far the easiest starting point to dash up on deck, which can be required even at anchor), use the little table opposite for meals in bad weather, use the front cabin for storage and do a good job of the cockpit for entertaining. Agreed I don't like Catalinas so I wonder how hard it would be to convert a smaller jeanneau or beneteau.
I really like the Catalina 400 and there seems to be a lot of them on the market problem is most of them are pretty wore out... And a bit over priced. Hmm Maybe the Beneteau 40 is a better option.
Thanks Chris. All great info. I wish I had the $105,000. for that Cycledes 43.3. The used charter fleet deals are amazing. Besides having your consultation is there a need for USA citizen to have some type of "handler" when buying a boat in Greece?
I Watch your videos regularly for motivation, I’m still in university studying Computerscience and have a long way to go. My dream is it to work from boat and maybe I can do that as a programmer (will still be difficult but if I could work from boat I wouldn’t mind less pay). I have a good idea of what I want as that will depend solely on my end budget. If I have the money I’ll buy a cat for comfort and cruising (and I guess with something like a lagoon44 or comparable you could make an Atlantik crossing?) but if I have less budget than 200k I’ll for sure buys monohole as old cats are terrible and the monos is comparison you just wouldn’t buy a cat.
That's amazing, you can totally do it , its great that you are so focused on it now and can learn so much before you eventually purchase. Thank you so much for watching and computer science is an awesome degree that I am sure you can eventually put to use in the marine industry. Hats off to you sir

alright man, you are killing me. You reckon 15hp outboard which needs a half decent dink and you also reckon don't put the outboard on the back rail. How do I make that work on a 35 footer? needs it's own video really
@@ChasingLatitudes you aren't wrong about the size of the dinghy. It's the main problem with smaller boats and it's a pita on almost all boats. I wish boat designers would think about it more.
Love your videos. I learn much, but I don't always know the background to your comments and/or why you don't like something. For example, why do you think "comfort ratio" or "capsize screening formula" are useless ratios? Maybe you covered it and I missed it? Thanks for your content! You've helped wean me off from romanticizing the "classic plastics" built in Taiwanese shipyards.
I also wonder why Chris so cavalierly dismisses the capsize ratio which was implemented after the famous 1979 Fastnet sailing disaster which occurred during the Round Great Britain with the loss of many boats and lives - with boats failing to return upright after being rolled. Boats with lower numbers are presumed more likely to return upright faster (and more surely) than boats with numbers over 200. The ratio was enabled (and still tracked) by naval architects to help prospective boat buyers get a safer boat if they plan any offshore sailing. Modern boats with wide transoms, flat coach roofs, are more likely to stay upside down for a much longer period than a narrower hull. And the comfort ratio is another estimate - with a higher number usually meaning the crew will arrive more rested than boats with a lower number. I have sailed on boats with low and high comfort numbers and think the ratio holds true. To each his own... I guess.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. yes I have covered that so much in numerous videos I tend to try not to harp on why those numbers are useless in every video
I'm currently in north Carolina. I've been following this situation in California and South Florida. To my understanding the law is being transferred from the federal level to the state level which is bad for us cruiser livaboards. I understand both sides. I wish our laws were made by the people for the people but unfortunately in this field most of the laws are for the real estate markets. Seems pretty simple that if your ship isn't sea worthy it should be towed and dry docked after sufficient time for taking action of course. I believe this would fix most of the problems. Anyways I'm certain that we'll be losing this way of life soon and not because of the bums but because as the powers that be are attacking off grid living they'll be attacking any way of life that gives us more freedom than our handlers are comfortable with. Although this whole system may break before we get there and then we'll have bigger things to deal with. Anyways, thanks for the video!
Great video Chris, love your brutality honest commentary. Have you known anyone that has bought from the moorings? I’m watching the channel Paradise Falls and they got the runaround for a year before taking delivery. Wondering if that is the norm?
The blue hanging thing on the 2008 Sun Odyssey is a drying rack for weed after trimming. But I've noticed Sailors using it to store their fruits instead of in the mini hammock. More space and less crushing, seems to work better.
I don't know if I missed the part where you go through the Bavaria sailboat. If I have missed it, I would like to know why.? However, Bavaria is the largest manufacturer on the European market when it comes to sailboats. In that, Hunter is far, far behind. Bavaria 44-46 2000-2005 to get that like 100k.
The silly girls jumping around on the boat ...are a little much for your lady sailors .. I totally get that girls are eye candy for your male viewers but having them jumping around like they are having seizures... it just makes... what you are trying to impart about buying a boat lightweight... also if you are going to have eye candy for men where is eye candy for the ladies ??? just saying that either play to both viewer types or lose the silly jumping girls LOL
I guess it if you want a caravan on water to pose on, listen to this guy, if you want some real meaningful information on real sailing yachts look elsewhere.

The greatest thing about Catalina is they hold their value well even some of the older ones...

you should probably clarify that what you mean is a 15hp outboard with a 9.9 sticker kit to get around the fuzz in a lot of countries.
I found mine for $150k and offered em $65k.. we settled on $85k, and I spent at least $60k on getting it ready
