I always got the feeling that Renala wasn't "locked up" exactly, and more like fenced in. Her area is very well protected with the rolling ball trap (an idea stolen from the Eternal Cities, which the Caria have some link to...) and a Carian knight, which I doubt was simply allowed to walk in and defend his queen. I feel like the sorcerers couldn't get to her, but she also refused to come out, so they just let her stay in the library, devoid of political power.
The ball trap is actually conjured by the academy sorcerers. You can see them when you climb the deck atop the hall before you fight moongrum with a pumpkin head. So it actually implies that these sorcerers are also protecting Rennala.
AND!!! If you kill the said sorcerers, the ball trap would go off. This further proves that indeed, the academy sorcerers are protecting the Carian Queen.
@@square-table-gaming not disturbing Rennala would make sense. After all, if the remaining sorcerers in the Academy are those that are loyal to the Carian Royal Family, then it would make sense that they wouldn't want anybody to disturb Rennala as per Ranni's request. Remember Ranni's dialogue: "Mother's rich slumber shall not be disturbed by thee."
6:20 the heavy attack of the sword is the same as the carian knight sword, so what if the best Lazuli sorcerers were then chosen to become new carian knights to protect the royal family?
I am always amazed at how little I would have actually known about this game without channels like yours. Every time you break down a new class I am amazed at how some things that meshed in my brain as being the same group can be different and make the story even more complete. I wish I had the patience to go and read every detail and see everything there is, but for that I am very grateful for your channel to exist! Even if I haven't played the game in a few months I keep on learning why I loved it so much when I began and still love it now.
The moon represents intelligence over faith as it was in origin that the sun gives power to Trees thru its golden rays. Radagon left Renala for the sun and his faith in the tree (the golden order). The moon, including Ranni are in contradiction to the golden sun’s power… Lazuli understood stars are far away suns, and accepted them as a “more powerful nighttime observation” of the gods…for Queen Renala possibly. Is this why so many “stars” have fallen on the lands between, why Raddan has tried to halt them, and/or like the “sun” are these fallen stars the reason the dead are able to be consumed for power enabling greater beasts?…was it the tree taking souls and shedding them anew as light all along or was there a fallen star literally eating tarnished and collecting their runes as cash to level up into the Elden beast…
Heresy has less negative connotations in the eastern cultures compared to the european one. Especially in politheistic religions, sometimes it just means adding another god to an existing pantheon, or telling a new story. It rarely caused any brutality, especially compared to the massacres European dogma could lead to, like in Raskol (which is also subtly tackled in Elden Ring). It's a bit of a generalization, sure, but I believe all the mentions of "heresy" in Elden Ring were meant to be only seen as those harmless "deviations" from the norm. However many players can't help but connect the word "heresy" with historical tragedies. In the Lands Between, there are many sources of heresy, but only the truly blasphemous ones (those who mean harm to the religion) are directly persecuted for it (Rykard is the obvious example). Other sources of heresy are rather accepted, judging by the dialogues of Miriel, Corhyn, or even the existance of Dragon Worship within Leyndell. This is why the heretical Moon Worship was not only respected, it was taught in the Lazuli Conspectus, and the moon-worshipping Carian family could become the leaders of the Academy. Of course up until a point, but it's hinted that the fall of Caria is tied to Rennala's depression and madness. The pushback on her heretical beliefs might play a role, but to a far lesser extent.
I always thought that those from the Lazuli conspectus are candidates to become Carian Knights, that would explain their presence in Caria Manor. Besides is worth noting that there are some unique twinsage sorcerers in the game that have the Lazuli face and the Olivinus face, what does that mean? and why some graven balls also have only these two faces? ... Maybe combining the moon and stars masks is even going deeper in power/heresy?
I came because while mix matching sets, I noticed that Lazuli's Sword and Lusat's Staff have very similar aesthetic designs with the exception of the swords gemstones having a feint glow.
A theory for why Renala is simply locked up as opposed to being executed (I'm assuming the Academy doesn't know about Ranni, technically her iconic doll form is a discovery you make that surprises Rogier who knows all about the Shattering): politics. The treaty with Leyndell was made with Renala, if the Academy executed her, there would be no treaty. Given that Morgott is the only one with a functioning army and has no conventional military rivals, the potential threat of an attack by the Capital might encourage the Academy to give Renala the kid gloves.
Besides the endings and what they mean for the lands between I also wanted to see a theory video on the primevil current and its lessons along with the connection of the graven masses and how they correlate to Sorceress Sellen, The graven witch. I have a few theories myself and floated around a few discords and reddits but not much stuck
Maybe Lazuli will be an DLC Boss. I found Similarities between those Graven School Balls and those Metalball we find in the Eternal City. Both are made out of Humans, that explains why we see those Corpses stretching from the Ground.
Im new to the Elden Ring (my first souls game btw) community but it's kinda funny Im making inside the Academy of Raya Lucaria were on of these lazuli dudes are patrolling the halls! Brilliant video btw!
My theory is that lazuli conspectus was founded by Rennala’s father. If the crone looked out for Ranni, and was her grandmother, it would make sense. Plus the use of “Carian House” or family is used a ton but Rennala was their only queen? There needs to be more of a bedrock of this family woven into Liurnia for that to make sense. Why would someone found a heterodox school and fight to have said school respected if not related to the carian line? Food for thought.
Those that remain in the academy are Carian loyalists. You can even see it in the environment story telling. Rennala's Portrait and Regal Scepter are still displayed before you enter the debate parlor. Her portrait can be seen in the debate parlor proper as well and the huge moon globe still hangs low. A Carian Knight defends her. And, the said lazuli conspectus who is loyal to her family is still present in the academy.
Not necessarily. If they were they'd likely be attacked in sight by the other sorcerers. The carian Knight is left alone because he's considerably more powerful than them.
Here's my theory. The Academy rebelled against the Carian Royal Family and failed. Rennala wasn't "locked" in the grand library. She chose to be there in solitary confinement due to her grief. If she were locked up, Ranni would not be able to place her protective spell in the grand library. So here's the thing, the only thing we know is that the academy rebelled against Caria. Period. But who has the motive to expel the royal family and use Rennala's weakened state to do so? The adherents of the primeval current. Remember, under Rennala's governance of the Academy, the extreme study of the primeval current was prohibited (I say extreme and not the study all in all because I believe Rennala, to some extent, allowed a bit of primeval sorcery given that she uses comet azur) and such prohibition made a faction of the academy sorcerers go against Rennala. This is where Sellen and the two grandmasters come into play. The three were known to be the extremists of primeval sorcerery and for doing so, drew the ire of Rennala which got them expelled. Surely they had some sorcerers who agrees with them. My theory is that the sorcerers who were team sellen still had contact with the expelled witch and when the latter learned about Rennala's weakened state, she, alongside her felow primeval sorcery adherents, took the opportunity to try expel Rennala and the royal family. They were the ones who hired the knights of the cuckoo who we all know eventually lost.
maybe they use their wooden swords as a staff in a sort of honor to Carian Sorceries? Being that they tend to focus on Swords/Blades I thought there may be a connection there.
I think that the decision to isolate Rennala might have as much to do with her losing her mind as a coup. That said, the second phase of her battle strongly denotes Ranni is protecting her. Also the time at which this all happened, Rykard and Radahn were not lost to their own tangents of snakedom and madness. So I think that the Lazuli Conspectus had a likely perpetuation as knowing the magic of an enemy and being better at it than they are might come into play. If they killed Rennala, they'd likely have three very pissed off demigods on their doorstep. They'd be all: BIG HAT! SSSSNEK! HORSE BOY! By your powers combined, I am captain caria! And Raya Lucaria would be basically a blue crystal explosion with lava trim sparkling purple with so much gravity magic juice that it will be a second floating city for the lands between to gawp up at.
