How does the Marantz compare to the AR i50 you reviewed and have in your rack? I heard the AR i50 recently and thought it was like a reference integrated.
Hi @Bill Bauman they are really completely different types of products other than both being integrated amplifiers with phono stages. Both sound and perform superbly for their respective prices. They both have high current designs according to the manufacturer. You have the tube harmonics from the I/50, and a massively larger sound stage. If money is no object and I could only choose one of the two, I would choose the I/50 for its sound quality, but the 40n is a tremendous value as it has streaming built-in and a DAC. The I/50 currently doesn't have a DAC offering yet and it will be significantly more expensive. $6250 with just the phono for the I/50 and the DAC will be additional in price between $1000-$1250 so you could be as high as $7500 roughly three times the price of the 40n making the 40n a great value. ***Marcello TSAV
Gran video amigo.
While those outboard DACs may sound better than the internal one in the Marantz, it's really nice to know that the amp is at least transparent enough to highlight the changes. I tried a Denon PMA-1600NE months back and it was so dark and laid back that it was about as transparent as a mud puddle.
This is a way late comment, I do love my 40n and I followed your advice with an external MHDT Labs Orchid DAC and added in a Blusound Node… and holy smokes the clarity, detail and soundstage greatly improved. If you have this amp and you want to play around with the sound without getting a new amp I really recommend adding an external streamer and a different DAC to see if that makes the system improved.
Sounds like the sound from this amp itself which has internal DAC built in is not good enough? I really hoped that spending £2k on this amp would already deliver great sound 😢
@@pistopitpit it is a good dac, but was/am searching for a better sound. I got that dac off of offer up for cheap… and it sounded better to both my wife and myself.
@@mrmessyjesse thanks. I have a Chord Mojo 2 so I will definitely be comparing that to Marantz built in DAC. Have you tried to connect your amplifier to PC? I wonder if HDMI cable would work for it.
I just ordered a demo model and looking forward to listening to this amp. Especially curious about the phono stage. I am going to use a high output Ortophon MC Turbo. Cant wait!
Loving the inclusion of ARC and built in HEOS. I'm currently debating upgrading my Peachtree iNova + Heos to a nice one box solution. We recently added a tv to the room so ARC is definitely welcomed although I do currently have optical into the Peachtree it's just a bit messy for others in the house to use. Thoughts? Will be driving a pair of B&W PM1's
Hi. What would be the best input to use to connect this amplifier with PC? Sadly, optical is no go as it is limited to 96khz. Coaxial - this could work but I would need to add converter which then could contribute to sound quality loss. So I am left with HDMI but will it actually work? Marantz is advertising it only as an input for tv. Such a great amp yet I don’t see an option for quick and efficient connection to PC. Any advise on that would be greatly appreciated.
REL has High level connections which allows you to hook them up inline with your speakers sending the exact same timed signal your speakers are receiving. One of my favorite things about REL @bbb29 brown . ***Marcello TSAV
I just campared in local hifi store model 40n to my good old pm7000m :) and tomorrow I'm going back to exchange them hehe :) 40n sounds two times better :) great amp, great sound. I'm only drawn to Arcam SA30 but I hate it's design and those buttons....

Hey guys. I'm currently looking at the Arcam SA30 vs this Marantz. The Arcam has 120 watts per side which is nearly double the 40n as well as Dirac room correction via microphone and software. Have you had any experience with the Arcam that you could compare sound quality and headroom differences? Prices are similar
I haven't heard the pairing personally but the 40n should have plenty of power and current to drive those speakers. I really enjoyed my 40n with my Nova V.
Your powers of observation need a little assistance. Take a closer look or possibly your comment is so parsed that I don’t understand your point. Do you need a map and explanation on how this system was cabled up?
@@ProffAndy take another look. That’s the AC power cord you were looking at. I’m surprised you made that error. A person with a tiny bit of audio electronics experience should have recognized that is a power cord.
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup I`ve actually got quite a lot of audio electronics experience, as I used to repair audio equipment. Thanks for pointing out my mistake, that power plug looks like a Toslink plug.

I am curious which external phono preamp is on par with the internal on this unit. For those using budget preamps, it would be nice to remove it.
