    I've had Marantz gear touch my system many times since the 70's. And they all added a specific color to the music. It's very listenable and can cover many source flaws. I currently have a Marantz ND8606 Network player, and I'm sure that this units DAC is based on the 8606 DAC it is very analog sounding but it does have a fixed set of filters hence the unique color. I have a PrimaLuna Tube DAC for my music listening but I still prefer the Marantz for watching movies.

  • @mmmbbq

    It would have been really cool of you could decode DSD through that HDMI port. Why this is only available through an AVR is dumbfounding. Also, it's great they did, and you pointed out, put in a great built in phono stage. Honestly, I have a bunch of Receivers, integrates, and preamps with awesome phono amps built in, all as good or, in many cases, better than, the Mani. I finally ended up selling my Mani when people were paying stupid prices for them the last couple months. I just never needed to use it.

    I listened to the Model 30 and the Model 40n, both on Alpha Audio's YT channel, and they used the same 3 songs and their reference Focal Sopra 1 speakers, and, to my ears, the 40 sounded fuller and more natural, and more three dimensional and just more real, and the 30 sounded thinner, flatter, and more two dimensional. I think class D still has a way to go to compete with class AB, if it ever can.

    • @V1ralB1ack
      @V1ralB1ack 2 года назад +5

      Class D has that characteristic sound. It competes... it's got power and dynamics but it carries that unrealistic digital high resolution sound signature. It's like tubes. They will always have great midrange and a uniquely big soundstage to its solid state counterpart. Why? it's in the design. The effort it would take to make a tube amp sound like a solid state is soo costly it'd be cheaper to just buy a solid state. Same applies with class d. It's strengths are its small size and efficiency (low heat). It is what it is.

    Steve, regarding that David Bowie album, I obtained the CD and, as I always do these days, immediately ripped and opened the tracks onto my audio editor (Audition 3.01), and found that ALL of the tracks were highly compressed into clipping. The entire album plays at the same volume level throughout and is fatiguing to listen to.
    I then went onto youtube, and found all of the tracks available on the David Bowie channel, and downloaded them in 256k mp3, and opened them up in my editor. I found those tracks NOT clipping, but still more than considerably compressed.
    It's a real shame that 98% of all music released since the mid-90's has been ruined by this corporate-mandated mastering compression that not only takes away the excitement and dynamic range of music, but also introduces clipping distortion.
    Anyone can digitize any CD or vinyl and see for themselves what's going on with the recording. That's why original vinyl releases before digital always sound more alive and exciting, and the same for all older CD releases, before the mid-90s.
    Fortunately there are some CD releases after the 90s that were not subjected to this treatment, and that preserve the sound of the music as well as red-book allows.

    • @daikuone
      @daikuone 2 года назад +2

      What we as audio enthusiasts need to do is to talk about the new albums that aren't compressed and spread the word, so more of us know about great recordings. They just aren't made by established artisits generally.

    I really enjoyed this review. This little amp sounds like it might be a hit. Steve's description of the DAC section reminds me of the DAC section in my Denon pma 1600ne which has a very sweet sound, but is not as detailed as some of the DACS coming out of China. However, the sweet sound is addictive and I can listen to it for hours. Digital has come a long ways.

Since AVR don’t always sound so good, you don’t compromise your music experience in 2 channel audio…and ease up on AVR power for the center and surrounds….

    I'm having a hard time deciding between this and the Technics SU-GX70. I would pull the trigger on the Technics rn if it had more watts per channel. I'm buying it for a relatively small room, but I've always purchased amps with an abundance of power. I like to have that grip on the lower end and the option of using it in a larger room if I ever wanted to. It probably sounds like I'm answering my own question, but the Technics is the better watt to watt integrated (imo), and it's less money. Anything you think would help me make this decision would be appreciated.

    A thought on your quick reference to the Maggie LRS vs Klipsch Cornwall IV …I’ve owned Several Maggie’s (among many $20k plus speakers) and I must say that the Klipsch are extremely revealing of ancillary gear. They can create an enveloping soundscape when properly fed and set up. The Maggie’s just can’t delver the realistic dynamics of actual instruments. They paint a large, tonally compelling and open sound field but lack the engagement that comes from live instruments. The C4’s deliver the gestalt that you are in front of the performers, with none of the constraints inflicted upon them as when heard through the planar speakers.

      I don’t know if it’s just me, but for me and in speaking with my active musician friends who are audiophiles as well, the consensus seems that we tend to favor horn speakers (i.e. Klipsch) because of the dynamics , sibilance, and accuracy of “live” analog instruments (as opposed to electronically produced musical sounds) reproduced by horn loaded speakers. Just one personal opinion based upon a limited specific input from one specific spectrum of musically literate colleagues. 😉 Your experience may differ and that’s equally important as well.

    Forced to choose, it's weird that Marantz gave 40n an "Amp In" rather than a "Pre Out". A typical upgrade path is to graduate to a more powerful amp, which is impossible with this integrated. That would be a deal breaker for me if I was in the market for one.

      I'm not a reviewer but the DWs require time to burn in, work with positioning and angle (back down front up or get them 8-12" off the ground) for their height limitations are critical. I originally hated them-but loved the finish-they are growing on me. I have a expensive pair of upgraded DWs from the last release and own all ML 519/585/526/332s gear and some expensive speakers...there is no comparison and they are not giant killers. -Steve did a review on them-lots of input from owners

I like the Vincent because it DOESN'T have a DAC or phono preamp, but does have digital and analog inputs. (We also have a Vincent phono preamp, Rega Planar 3, bluesound Node 3. I have the Model 30 and it sounds like the Model 40N had a similar sound stage. The Model 30 is 100 wpc (possibly Class D amp), has a pre-amp out, power amp in, and handles both MC and MM phono cartridges. It is $500 US more but I was lucky to purchase mine at $2500 just before $500 price increase in December. The Model 30 does not have all of the digital inputs, which is fine for me because I’m an…analog kid…and play strictly vinyl, cassette, or reel to reels. It would be interesting to get your take on how the Model 40 sound compares to the Model 30. Great segment, by the way.

    Thanks Steve for this review! Few questions if you can please answer: I have RT85 connected with Klipsch The Fives. I'm looking to upgrade my stereo system, and first I was thinking about Klipsch The Sevens, but I would like to listen to CDs too and also to be able to connect to the TV . 1. What you recommend to buy between Marantz Cinema 70 and Marantz 40n? which one has a better phono stage and works better with a CD player? Is the $1500 difference between them worth to go with 40n? I'm ok spending $2500 for the 40n if it makes more sense. (I'm not watching a lot of movies or playing games). 2. Is Marantz CD 60 the best match with 40n, or works ok with Cinema 70? 3. What bookshelf speakers you recommend up to $2000 ($2500) per pair? (I have a Klipsch Reference R-10SW 10" 300w Powered Subwoofer and I was hinking about Klipsch 600M II to match the subwoofer, but I'm ok spending more for better quality or better match with Marantz). 4. Can I replace (after 1000 hours) the 2 M Blue with the 2m Bronze cartridge on my RT 85? Thank you very much!

    An idea for maybe a future video: you should talk about how some equipment keeps its value and some not / for example: I have a Denon AVR-4810CI / this was originally a $3000 piece of equipment, it's for movies, but can be used for 2-channel and it sounds pretty damn good also! I picked it up at the thrift store for $100 and that's what they seem to go for $100 - $300 range.. depends if you find one with the remote or not... it's a 10+-year-old piece of equipment, but it lost like 97% of its value / on the Other hand I recently bought a used: Primare I20 from Sweden for $350, but they go for $1299 new - dedicated 2-channel audiophile amp and also about 10 years old and, well I did get a good deal, but these sell for about $500 to $600 used, maybe more - it lost a fraction of its original value compared to the other Brand, maybe 50% or 40% - depending on the deal you get... / I mean there is a big difference in lost value between these Brands... as just one example... more serious dedicated equipment seems to keep its value and these integrated amps do not, be warned! Now I can't say anything about this Marantz, made in Japan, probably more on the limited series, but who knows, looks pretty awesome too!

    • @ptg01

      Interesting topic for sure... as a significant majority of audio equipment will lose its value rapidly... just like driving a brand new car off the dealer lot !!! This hobby is indeed an expense, not a good financial investment ! But the ROI is mostly 'satisfaction', 'happiness' etc. :)

      I would go with the marantz for your set up. The technics is most impressive as far as bieng clean and entertaining guests with records. Where its lacking is power. In my large room i have jbl studio 590's which are huge basically . On my halfler amp with a marantz those speakers could probably break the windows in my old studio. So in your case i guess the marantz because it does it all and has more power. The technics is cleaner i guarantee that by a fair margin and perfect for not getting rumble from a turntable.

    Marantz's *extremely* poor tone controls are the reason I keep refusing to buy a Marantz amp -- even though, in other respects, I would LOVE to buy this one. Marantz chooses to boost a very narrow peak at 50 Hz in the bass and at 15 kHz in the treble. The result is that all you hear is some extra hiss in the treble and some hard thumping way down low. It doesn't allow you alter the tone in a musically satisfying way. BOO Marantz. To see what I'm talking about, look at the tone control measurements in the Stereophile review of the 40n.
