@@maletenance My guess is although they know how to do the procedure, most of them don't have the experience of having one installed on themselves. Poor nurses they only can guess how much it must hurt. Or telling to not forget to roll back the foreskin after I cleaned it so I don't get discomfort from that... well she then realized i probably did it for the last 50 years so i probably already know that lol. Don't blame them, or even installing the wrong length (tell me how you feel after 3 weeks of having a catheter that surely was made for babies or women since it was a bit too short... ) We guys might have "boners" right? Need space so the tip does not touch the start of the Y connection between the balloon inflating port and the output? Yeah... ouch. The one the urologist had installed after that first one is longer, way more freedom of movement, less pain, etc... You get used to those inconveniences over time, better that than not being able to pee, am I right?

Yeah got the can't-pee-at-all thing too. Ended up with a catheter that was too short at first. Had it for 3 weeks until my appointment with a urologist, first thing I noticed is how much more comfy the new catheter is, because it is much longer, like the normal size that can accommodate the whole length of the penis, and as much as long outside so it can move around normally, now I can walk, bend over to attach my shoes like a normal person would do. It's mentally a huge thing obviously. I broke the ice immediately among my coworkers so they know and not asking me heavy work more than I should do; hard to decline to do something at work without a good reason. My approach to these kind of things is that well it's a medical condition I have to live through, no shame in it, I just go by. It's a challenge, but manageable. You learn quick enough how to relief the pain, how to position the thing so you hurt a bit less. For sleeping, the bag just goes on a carpet (my bed is way too low for the bag to be under my waist while sleeping), sleep naked since I discovered that wearing boxers (I usually sleep naked but I believed boxers would give support) actually impaired movement since I sleep on the side. I always detach the catheter from the leg attach point so it can more as free as when not wearing it. At first I worried it could detach and leak, but soon I realized that even if attached the point that attaches to the bag is free anyway and if it would detach it would detach no matter what. I would say to each his own though but if some tricks might not work for you there is a few you can try, especially if you have to live in that situation for a long time.

Wish I came across this earlier. I've went through all the alternatives. You are absolutely correct. Boxer briefs are the way to go. Only thing I would add is at least some looseness around the leg where the tube comes out ... but not too much room.

Better late than never. Somehow boxers just give the right amount of support. I like your idea of the extra looseness around the leg for the tube....maybe cut the elastic a little. It's actually amazing how creative we have to get to find some comfort when we have a catheter. I ended up getting a patent for a redesigned catheter that allows more range of motion so there's less friction. I'm not an inventor or a medical professional but it's something only a catheter user would think about.

@@maletenance initially googled videos “best way to secure a catheter” then linked to RUclips with your content. This is second time I’ve had a catheter in for a couple weeks. The first time was not successful, panicked a lot, and dealt with a-lot of pain. I’m on day 2 now and things are going much better. Your tips are making a huge difference, from coat hanger trick, sleeping, to underwear. Only thing that’s irritating is when the catheter has the piston movement on the tip. Using a little Vaseline for now, have no numbing cream.

Thank you for the info on how you found me. I want to reach as many people as possible as the info is so important and no one is talking about living with a catheter from personal experience. I'm really happy the videos are offering some support.
As for the piston action...that is a nightmare. I suffered so much that I sat down a year or two ago and invented a new and improved catheter that allows a range of motion without the piston action. It's not pain-free but significantly reduces the pain so you can get on with life and the activities of daily living.
I am in the final stages of receiving my utility patent and I am so proud that it will help the millions of people who have no choice but to use a catheter to maintain some semblance of normalcy.

@@gdgentry9090 for me it's the foreskin against the boxer brief and on the catheter that is painful. Also when doing a number 2 I don't know for you guys but that IS inducing a lot of pain, I guess that is bladder spasm that let pee go passed the sphincter but get stuck between the catheter and the urethra just probably when there is those "need-to-pee" nerves. Feels the urge to pee, what tells me it's what happens is that some pee and even blood goes through and gets out, around the tube and out. Not much I believe a few droplets is enough to cause that pain. Some days it seems that it won't come out as easily and you feel the urge to pee like continuously. Can't wait for the medication to take hold and reduce my prostate a bit so they can remove the catheter. I probably will get the operation anyways medication is to reduce it to help a bit.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with a catheter, however, I am happy that you found the videos and they have helped. The underwear thing was a game-changer for so many. It's the little things that make all the difference. I knew when I had mine and there was no instruction given on how to live with the darn thing, from a first-person perspective, that I had to do something. After trial and error, I also concluded boxer briefs provide the best support. They also help hold the tube in an upright loop so there is enough slack to change from standing to sitting position. Boxers were too loose and allowed too much irritation of the tip of my penis when walking. I didn’t get to try briefs since I didn’t have any as I normally wear boxer briefs or boxers lately.

I wear boxer briefs all the time. So I was ready when I started to have an indwelling catheter. Still sometimes I need to wear loose pajamas no underwear because although the briefs have lots of support, sometimes I need my business to be a little freer. But during the day activities I do recommend to always wear boxer briefs for the added support.

I get it, I really do. I feel you brother. Here's the thing - You're gonna have to get it together. Trust me I've been there feeling like WTF, I'm in pain, I can't move, I feel sorry for myself, I'm scared, I feel helpless, etc. This is all normal. You can have a few days of this, then it's time to stop because it's not going to change what you have to deal with. Yes it sucks but now it's time to get your head in the game. If you are healthy and was mobile prior to your diagnosis you can still do stuff and participate in your life while using a catheter. You just have to move a little slower. It's really important for your mental and emotional state and will promote a different attitude as you move toward recovery. I did videos on showering, hygiene, taking a crap, erections, and everything in between. Get some boxer briefs - it'll help with the aches down there.

Who, by the way is a saint for taking care of you. I'm certain she's happy to help you but you must help yourself too. You're welcome! I really want people to have a better go of it than I did.
Don't not do it because you're scared because if you don't you are likely to get a bacterial infection and must be put on antibiotics..... that's when things could become really painful. Having a catheter is a cesspool for infection even when you're keeping your privates super clean. I did a video about cleaning.

Hi Rodel, I'm very sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I hate the C word....my best friend has stage 4 breast cancer and is on her third round of chemo.....(insert heavy sigh here)
Sounds like your GF is amazing and you don't have to disappoint her. Try them and see how you feel. I don't know why but I needed the extra support but not too much support for my nuts. It just felt like they were being pulled and I had enough pain already with the catheter. A lot of people agreed they got extra sensitive down there however, you may be different.
Also, I'm really glad you like the videos. I was scared shitless to put them out there....not an easy topic due to location....but they're helping so I'm glad that I did.
Hang in there, stay strong, go through all of the emotions, and keep fighting.

Tony, first of all thank you very much for the detailed videos. My surgery is 3/29/23 and with your help, I will be much better prepared than I would have been.
My question is, I had planned to wear the the Depends Fit Flex diapers for the 10-12 days I have a catheter after my surgery. My thought was I need to be prepared for possible leakage between the catheter and the end of my penis. Am I overthinking the leakage issue and should just go with the boxer briefs you suggested?

Whoops... missed that. You're overthinking it but best to be prepared as it can happen even when the catheter and bag are attached. I don't know why but Ieaked around the catheter. Anyhow ask the doctor or nurse to show you exactly how to attach and detach the catheter from the bag securely. Take a video for reference if you have to.....there's a lot to remember. Another tip is to make sure they attach the bag to the correct leg based on which side you wear yourself. Trust me it makes all the difference in the world in minimizing the pain. No no....not a problem at all. Ask away. The boxer briefs are to help with the pain. Tighty whites were too tight.....I was super sensitive down there during having a catheter, for obvious reasons, and boxers were way too loose. It felt like someone was tugging on my nutz and not in a good way. Boxer briefs. like the BUM, was the right amount of support and the legs helped hold the catheter in place even more. The friction of the catheter going in and out was miserable on the tip. So anything I could do to illuminate this pain was helpful. When I didn't want to wear the diaper and since I didn't know about male pads at the time I would.....wait for it.....fold up some paper towel and stuff it down there 😆Terrible idea since I ended up with little pieces of paper stuck to my privates. I also took to wearing black joggers or pants since it hides unfortunate leaks really well. I had to do what I had to do. Ps. I bought the BUM undies at the dollar store but any brand or brandless boxer briefs will do.

My husband got a multi resistant klebsiella infection from a urinary catether. Then, afterwards, he used a urocondom tied to a urinary bag. He had to use baby cream to protect the penis skin with an additional drop of antifungal cream. I say this because he lived five years with the urocondom plus urine bag. I do not know if this info can be useful to someone.

Hi. Thank you for sharing and all information is absolutely welcome. The urocondom is a great device if you still have the ability to void urine but can't control the flow. I had a urethral blockage due to severe BPH that did not allow any urine to void. It was horrible. I was stuck with an indwelling catheter until my surgery.

Hi Jacob, I'm sure compression shorts might work. Give it a go and see if you are comfortable. Everyone is different with individual pain thresholds. For me my balls got super sensitive and hurt just hanging in boxers and tight whities were painful. so the middle ground was the boxer brief. I also go them at the Dollar store. My urologist originally recommended me to wear a jockstrap for my bilateral hydrocele. Yea, I am pretty sure that jockstraps would not be the best if you are cathed (which I might have to be in the future because I also have urinary hesitancy due to a high bladder neck and a thick bladder wall) since they are pretty much like briefs but more exposed, compression shorts are very similar to boxer briefs in the sense that they give the right amount of support to your gonads without being too supportive.
